Tear proteomics reveals biomarkers for visual field progression in normal-tension glaucoma

AIM:To identify early biomarkers associated with glaucomatous visual field(VF)progression in patients with normal-tension glaucoma(NTG).METHODS:This study included patients were divided into two groups based on disease progression status.Tear samples were collected for proteomic analysis.Dataindependent acquisition(DIA)mass spectrometry combined with bioinformatic analyses was performed to identify and validate potential protein biomarkers for NTG progression.Additionally,differentially expressed proteins(DEPs)were evaluated using mediating effect models and receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curve analysis.RESULTS:A total of 19 patients(20 eyes)with NTG participated in this study,including 10 patients(4 males and 6 females;10 eyes)in the progression group with mean age of 67.70±9.03y and 10 patients(4 males and 6 females;10 eyes)in the non-progression group with mean age of 68.60±7.58y.A total of 158 significantly differentially expressed proteins were detected.UniProt database annotation identified 3 upregulated proteins and 12 downregulated proteins.Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes(KEGG)pathway analysis showed that these DEPs were mainly enriched in pathways such as oocyte meiosis.Gene Ontology(GO)enrichment analysis revealed functional clusters related to cellular processes.Weighted gene coexpression network analysis(WGCNA)indicated that the core proteins were primarily involved in the neurodegenerationmultiple diseases pathway and cellular processes.Mediating effect analysis identified PRDX4(L)as a potential protein biomarker.ROC curve analysis showed that GNAI1 had the largest area under the curve(AUC=0.889).CONCLUSION:This study identifies 15 differentially expressed proteins in the tear fluid of NTG patients,including PRDX4(L).PRDX4(L)plays a key role in oxidative stress. 展开更多

AIM:To evaluate long-term visual field(VF)prediction using K-means clustering in patients with primary open angle glaucoma(POAG).METHODS:Patients who underwent 24-2 VF tests≥10 were included in this study.Using 52 total deviation values(TDVs)from the first 10 VF tests of the training dataset,VF points were clustered into several regions using the hierarchical ordered partitioning and collapsing hybrid(HOPACH)and K-means clustering.Based on the clustering results,a linear regression analysis was applied to each clustered region of the testing dataset to predict the TDVs of the 10th VF test.Three to nine VF tests were used to predict the 10th VF test,and the prediction errors(root mean square error,RMSE)of each clustering method and pointwise linear regression(PLR)were compared.RESULTS:The training group consisted of 228 patients(mean age,54.20±14.38y;123 males and 105 females),and the testing group included 81 patients(mean age,54.88±15.22y;43 males and 38 females).All subjects were diagnosed with POAG.Fifty-two VF points were clustered into 11 and nine regions using HOPACH and K-means clustering,respectively.K-means clustering had a lower prediction error than PLR when n=1:3 and 1:4(both P≤0.003).The prediction errors of K-means clustering were lower than those of HOPACH in all sections(n=1:4 to 1:9;all P≤0.011),except for n=1:3(P=0.680).PLR outperformed K-means clustering only when n=1:8 and 1:9(both P≤0.020).CONCLUSION:K-means clustering can predict longterm VF test results more accurately in patients with POAG with limited VF data. 展开更多

Streamsurfaces in diffusion tensor fields are used to represent structures with pri- marily planar diffusion. So far, however, no effort has been made on the visualization of the anisotropy of diffusion on them, although this information is very important to identify the problematic regions of these structures. We propose two methods to display this anisotropy information. The first one employs a set of merging ellipsoids, which simultaneously character- ize the local tensor details - anisotropy - on them and portray the shape of the streamsurfaces. The weight between the streamsurfaces continuity and the discrete local tensors can be inter- actively adjusted by changing some given parameters. The second one generates a dense LIC (line integral convolution) texture of the two tangent eigenvector fields along the streamsurfaces firstly, and then blends in some color mapping indicating the anisotropy information. For high speed and high quality of texture images, we confine both the generation and the advection of the LIC texture in the image space. Merging ellipsoids method reveals the entire anisotropy information at discrete points by exploiting the geometric attribute of ellipsoids, and thus suits for local and detailed examination of the anisotropy; the texture-based method gives a global representation of the anisotropy on the whole streamsurfaces with texture and color attributes. To reveal the anisotropy information more efficiently, we integrate the two methods and use them at two different levels of details. 展开更多

The application of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs)for the pursuit and capture of unauthorized UAVs has emerged as a novel approach to ensuring the safety of urban airspace.However,pursuit UAVs necessitate the utilization of their own sensors to proactively gather information from the unauthorized UAV.Considering the restricted sensing range of sensors,this paper proposes a multi-UAV with limited visual field pursuit-evasion(MUV-PE)problem.Each pursuer has a visual field characterized by limited perception distance and viewing angle,potentially obstructed by buildings.Only when the unauthorized UAV,i.e.,the evader,enters the visual field of any pursuer can its position be acquired.The objective of the pursuers is to capture the evader as soon as possible without collision.To address this problem,we propose the normalizing flow actor with graph attention critic(NAGC)algorithm,a multi-agent reinforcement learning(MARL)approach.NAGC executes normalizing flows to augment the flexibility of policy network,enabling the agent to sample actions from more intricate distributions rather than common distributions.To enhance the capability of simultaneously comprehending spatial relationships among multiple UAVs and environmental obstacles,NAGC integrates the“obstacle-target”graph attention networks,significantly aiding pursuers in supporting search or pursuit activities.Extensive experiments conducted in a high-precision simulator validate the promising performance of the NAGC algorithm. 展开更多

Detection of the movement direction by the cells with directional receptive fields in the primary visual cortex of the cat

The study was performed on neurons with direction selective (DS) receptive fields (RFs) in the primary visual cortex of the cat. Preferred directions (PDs) of these cells to a single light spot and a system of two identical light spots moving across the RF with a given angle between them were compared. Directional interactions appeared when the angles between the directions of the two moving spots were 30o or 60o. PD for 56% of the cells coincided with bisectors of these angles. These cells responded to a combination of the two moving stimuli as if only one stimulus moved in the RF in an intermediate direction. This direction coincided with PD of the DS neuron to a single spot. Also, the investigation revealed that DS neurons responded to stimuli moving at such angles as 180o (to preferred and opposite directions simultaneously). In the further experiment we investigated responses of the DS cells in the primary visual cortex of RF. The angle between the directions of the two moving spots was 60o. These cells responded to a combination of the two moving stimuli as if only one stimulus moved in RF in an intermediate direction. To answer the queries concerning penetrability of ~1 μT, physiologically patterned, time-varying magnetic fields through the cranium, the proportions of attenuation through thicknesses and densities of ~3 times that of the human skull were measured directly. There was no reduction in the intensity of the magnetic field when two 2 cm thick dried pine boards (4.3 × 103 kg·m-3) were placed between the pairs of solenoids separated by the approximate width of the skull. Although volumes of water containing intracellular concentrations of ions did not attenuate the field intensity, placement of 290 cm2 of 2 mm sheets of duct metal reduced the amplitude by 25%. Spectra comparisons showed a clear congruence in profiles between direct measurement of the applied field and the original computer-generated pattern. These results indicate there is little validity to claims that weak, time-varying magnetic fields applied in this manner are eliminated or significantly attenuated by the human skull. 展开更多

Background:To settle the fundamentals of a numerical procedure that relates retinal ganglion-cell density and threshold sensitivity in the visual field.The sensitivity of a generated retina and visual pathways to virtual stimuli are simulated,and the conditions required to reproduce glaucoma-type defects both in the optic-nerve head(ONH)and visual fields are explored.Methods:A definition of selected structural elements of the optic pathways is a requisite to a translation of clinical knowledge to computer programs for visual field exploration.The program is able to generate a database of normalized visual fields.The relationship between the number of extant receptive fields and threshold sensitivity is plotted for background sensitivity and corresponding automated perimetry.A solution in two planes to the 3D distribution of axons in the ONH is proposed.Visual fields with induced damage in the optic disc are comparable in pattern and quantity to glaucomatous records.Results:The two-level simulation of the ONH facilitates the analysis of optic-cup/retinal defects.We can generate the virtual optic pathways tailored to the age and morphology of the patient’s eye,and it is possible to reproduce glaucomatous damage by“reverse engineering”engineering.The virtual cortical model renders a quantitative relationship between visual defect and neural damage.Conclusions:A two-level computing of the retina/optic nerve facilitates the analysis of neuroretinal defects and can be incorporated to automatic perimeters to facilitate visual field analysis. 展开更多

By measuring wetland plants chlorophyll content,malondialdehyde(MDA) content and superoxide dismutase(SOD) enzyme activity,the changes of wetland plant physiological characeristics under different power strength were studied,and the mechanism of electric field on plant physiological characteristics was analyzed to provide a theoretical basis for the pollutant removal ability strengthening of artificial wetland under electricfield.The results showed that compared with the control plants,low-intensity-voltage(1 V and 3 V) had no significant effect on the normal physiological and biochemical indexes of the plants,and the growth trend was better than the control group;with the voltage increasing,plant chlorophyll content,MDA content and SOD activity were greatly affected,indicating that plants were under strong oxidative stress,and the growth was damaged.Therefore,a suitable electric field could enhance the sewage treatment effect of constructed wetland. 展开更多

Based on this, a visualization system for 3-D explosion--ViSC3D is designed. Approaches for the visualization of 3-D field of explosion are presented. The algorithm and the functions of ViSC3D are also presented. ViSC3D is thus a useful tool to observe and analyze either the full picture or the details of a 3-D field of explosion, that are difficult to observe and analyze directly. With ViSC3D, the field of explosion between the hill slopes is visualized. The cutaway views and 2-D slices are also given. The full picture and partial details of 3-D field of explosion can be observed clearly. Furthermore, ViSC3D can be used to visualize other similar 3-D data fields. 展开更多

For decades visual field defects were considered irreversible because it was thought that in the visual system the regeneration potential of the neuronal tissues is low.Nevertheless,there is always some potential for partial recovery of the visual field defect that can be achieved through induction of neuroplasticity.Neuroplasticity refers to the ability of the brain to change its own functional architecture by modulating synaptic efficacy.It is maintained throughout life and just as neurological rehabilitation can improve motor coordination,visual field defects in glaucoma,diabetic retinopathy or optic neuropathy can be improved by inducing neuroplasticity.In ophthalmology many new treatment paradigms have been tested that can induce neuroplastic changes,including non-invasive alternating current stimulation.Treatment with alternating current stimulation(e.g.,30 minutes,daily for 10 days using transorbital electrodes and^10 Hz)activates the entire retina and parts of the brain.Electroencephalography and functional magnetic resonance imaging studies revealed local activation of the visual cortex,global reorganization of functional brain networks,and enhanced blood flow,which together activate neurons and their networks.The future of low vision is optimistic because vision loss is indeed,partially reversible. 展开更多

Field identification of morphological and physiological traits in two special mutants with strong tolerance and high sensitivity to drought stress in upland rice(Oryza sativa L.) 被引量:2

The two mutants idr1-1 and 297-28, which were obtained from the radiation mutation of HD297 and IAPAR9, were used as experimental materials in this study for a 2-year(2012 and 2013) experiment about field drought resistance identification in Beijing, China. Key agronomic traits and water-related physiological indexes were observed and measured, including the leaf anti-dead level(LADL), days to heading, plant height, setting percentage, aboveground biomass, leaf water potential(LWP), net photosynthetic rate(Pn) and transpiration rate. The results showed that the mutant idr1-1 that was under drought stress(DS) conditions for 2 years had the highest LADL grades(1.3 and 2.0) among all the materials, and they were 2–3 grades stronger than the wild-type IAPAR9 with an average that was 21.4% higher for the setting percentage than the wild type. Compared with the IAPAR9 for the 2-year average delay in the days to heading and the reduction rates in the plant height, setting percentage, and aboveground biomass under DS compared with the well-watered(WW) treatment, idr1-1 showed 3.2% less delay and 19.1, 16.4, and 6.1% less reduction, respectively. The idr1-1 in the LWP always exhibited the highest performance among all the materials. The Pn of idr1-1 under severe and mild DS comparing with that under WW was slightly decreased and even slightly increased, respectively, leading to an average reduction rate of only 0.92%, which was 26.93% less than that of IAPAR9. Under the severe DS, idr1-1 still showed the highest value of 16.88 μmol CO2 m–2 s–1 among all the materials and was significantly higher than that of IAPAR9(11.66 μmol CO2 m–2 s–1). Furthermore, only idr1-1 had the increased and the highest transpiration rate values(7.6 and 6.04 mmol H2 O m–2 s–1) under both mild and severe DS compared with the values under WW, when the transpiration rate of all the other materials significantly decreased. By contrast, the 297-28 in terms of the LADL grade under DS was the lowest(7.0), and it was four grades weaker than its wildtype HD297 and even one grade weaker than the drought-sensitive paddy rice SN265. For the 2-year average reduction rates in aboveground biomass and plant heights under DS compared with those under the WW, 297-28 was 31.6 and 31.8% higher than HD297, respectively. Meanwhile, 297-28 showed the worst performance for the LWP, Pn, and transpiration rate. These results suggest that idr1-1 might be a superior drought tolerant mutant of upland rice found in China. It has a strong ability to maintain and even enhance leaf transpiration while maintaining a high plant water potential under DS, thus supporting a high Pn and alleviating the delay in agronomic trait development and yield loss effectively. 297-28 is a much more highly drought-sensitive mutant that is even more sensitive than paddy rice varieties. The two mutants could be used as drought tolerance controls for rice germplasm identification and the drought resistant mechanism studies in the future. idr1-1 is also suitable for breeding drought-tolerant and lodging-resistant high-yield rice varieties. 展开更多

Its calculated results were consistent with the results of the specialized statisti- cal software DPS. BCVA, visual field defect index mean deviation (MD), duration of symptoms, age, sex, and volume of tumors were compared. Expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and Ki-67 of tumor tissue were detected by immunohistochemical technique. RESULTS: The mean age of patients was 44.23 +/- 1.29y. Ninety -three patients were female and 108 were male. The mean tumor volume was 14.36 +/- 6.23 cm(3). The mean duration of preoperative symptoms was 11.50 +/- 0.88mo. Mean preoperative MD was -17.50 +/- 0.82 dB. Mean Preoperative visual acuity was 0.64 +/- 0.04. Postoperative visual field improved in 270 (73.77%) eyes, unchanged in 96 (26.23%) eyes. Multivariate logistic regression displayed that the factors independently influencing visual field improvement were young age (OR=1.71, 95%CI: 1.325-2.387, P=0.013), low preoperative MD absolute value (OR=1.277, 95%CI: 1.205-1.355, P<0.001), small volume of tumor (OR=1.458, 95%CI: 1.060-4.289, P<0.001), low expression of VEGF in tumor tissue (OR=1.554, 95%CI: 1.089-2.457, P=0.022), and low expression of Ki-67 in tumor tissue (OR=1.552, 95%CI: 1.161-2.847, P=0.026). CONCLUSION: After pituitary macroadenomas trans sphenoidal resection, the independent influencing factors of the visual fields recovery were low preoperative MD absolute value, young age, small volume of tumor, and expression levels of VEGF/Ki-67. 展开更多

AIM: To investigate the associations between demographic and clinical factors with the rate of visual field mean derivation(MD) decline in retinitis pigmentosa(RP) patients.METHODS: Correlations of MDs with the visual acuity and retinal pigmentation were analyzed in 928 RP patients. MD decreasing rate in 10 y and potential influences of gender, age, family history and retinal pigmentation on the rate were explored in 201 RP patients. RESULTS: In the 928 patients, average MD and visual acuity were-14.44±8.61 dB and 0.79±0.35 respectively and when MD was lower than-9.18 dB the visual acuity would be below 1.0(20/20). The average MD medium between eyes with or without retinal pigmentation was-14.82 dB. In 123 non-pigmented eyes, the average MD were lower than the medium but in 153 pigmented eyes it was higher than that. In the 201 patients, the average decreasing value of MD in 10 years’ period was-8.01±3.66 dB and the value were correlated to retinal pigmentation but not to gender, age or RP family history. CONCLUSION: The rate of MD decline in RP eyes is significantly related to retinal pigmentation. Our study demonstrates the quantitative rate of MD decline in RP patients and the value of MD could well reflect the severity of RP. 展开更多

Information flow between the prefrontal and visual cortices is critical for visual behaviors such as visual search. To investigate its mechanisms, we simultaneously recorded spike and local field potential (LFP) signals in the frontal eye field (FEF) and area V4 while monkeys performed a free-gaze visual search task. During free-gaze search, spike-LFP coherence between FEF and V4 was enhanced in the theta rhythm (4–8 Hz) but suppressed in the alpha rhythm (8–13 Hz). Cross-frequency couplings during the Cue period before the search phase were related to monkey performance, with higher FEF theta-V4 gamma coupling and lower FEF alpha-V4 gamma coupling associated with faster search. Finally, feature-based attention during search enhanced spike-LFP coherence between FEF and V4 in the gamma and beta rhythms, whereas overt spatial attention reduced coherence at frequencies up to 30 Hz. These results suggest that oscillatory coupling may play an important role in mediating interactions between the prefrontal and visual cortices during visual search. 展开更多

Line integral convolution(LIC)is a useful visualization technique for a vector field.However,the output image produced by LIC has many problems in a marine vector field.We focus on the visual quality improvement when LIC is applied in the ocean steady and unsteady flow field in the following aspects.When a white noise is used as the input in a steady flow field,interpolation is used to turn the discrete white noise into continuous white noise to solve the problem of discontinuity.The"cross"high-pass filtering is used to enhance the textures of streamlines to be more concentrated and continuity strengthened for each streamline.When a sparse noise is used as the input in a steady flow field,we change the directions of background sparse noise according to the directions of vector field to make the streamlines clearer and brighter.In addition,we provide a random initial phase for every streamline to avoid the pulsation effect during animation.The velocities of vector field are encoded in the speed of the same length streamlines so that the running speed of streamlines can express flow rate.Meanwhile,to solve the problem of obvious boundaries when stitching image,we change the streamline tracking constraints.When a white noise is used as an input in an unsteady flow field,double value scattering is used to enhance the contrast of streamlines;moreover,the"cross"high-pass filtering is also adopt instead of two-dimensional high-pass filtering.Finally,we apply the above methods to a case of the surface wave field in typhoon condition.Our experimental results show that applying the methods can generate high-quality wave images and animations.Therefore,it is helpful to understand and study waves in typhoon condition to avoid the potential harm of the waves to people's lives and property. 展开更多

The paper introduces the concepts, classification and method of visualization in scientific computation. Visual C++ developing tool is used to compute surface grinding forces and grinding temperature field models. The three-dimensional entity model of workpiece is made with OpenGL tool, and the different colors on the workpiece entity show different value of temperature, so the visualization of grinding temperature field is realized. The temperature value of every points in grinding temperature field, the curves on surface temperature field and along depth direction are all given. The paper introduces method of visualization in scientific computation, and applies the visualization in scientific computation to the visualization of grinding temperature field. The displaying entity model of workpiece is made with OpenGL tool. The workpiece model is divided into griddings. The heat model is chosen and numerically computed, so the temperature values of every points can be attained. Three different view classes are used to display temperature data, temperature curves on the surface and along the depth direction, and the visualization distribution of three-dimensional temperature field. The visualization of grinding temperature is realized, and the display results of grinding temperature field can be dynamically changed by changing input parameters. Thus, a new path for researching grinding temperature field is developed. 展开更多
