Chemistry and potential applications of multifunctional polymer nanocomposite coatings:A review

Polymer nanocomposite coatings(PNCCs)are unprecedented generation of coatings engineered for displaying inexpensive and brilliant functional surface coatings with eminent corrosion guard,mechanical resistance,antimicrobial,chemical durability,electrical insulation,and UV aging features.Due to their widely anticipation in petroleum,applications in building,conveyance,aerospace,electronics,automobiles and energy,these multi-functional coatings have a tremendous leverage in human life,all technological and scientific subjects.Numerous applications have been made for multilateral polymers like polyurethane(PU),epoxy(EP),polyaniline(PANI)conductive polymer,polypyrrole(PPy),and etc,on various metallic surfaces especially,carbon steel substrate owing to their excellent resistance properties.Practically,nanomaterials can possess potential in the all-interdisciplinary domains of materials science and engineering,chemical and physical sciences,biological and health sciences.As known,the designed polymer nanocomposite coating paradigm is fundamentally constituted from polymer or resin as a vehicle and inorganic nanofillers(nanoparticles and nanocomposites).Some commercialized and excessively employed nanocontainers in polymer nanocomposite coating formulations,like ZnO,TiO_(2),carbon nanotubes(CNTs),clay,SiO_(2),Al_(2)O_(3),graphene,GO,CeO_(2),ZrO_(2),FeTiO_(3),etc were discussed.The current review covered the chemistry and potential applications of the largest utilized multifunctional polymer nanocomposite coatings such as EP,PU and other considerable PNCCs.Lately,a titanic attention was made for epoxy nanocomposites because of their distinct physicochemical characteristics,which result from the combined qualities of the nanoparticles and polymer material unity.In addition,the author incorporated some of his scientific contributions in this area represented in construction of innovative functional polymer nanocomposites for a variety of uses with high economic,industrial impacts and future orientation.Furthermore,some newly published applications of polymer nanocomposite coatings were incorporated and discussed. 展开更多

Effects of organosilicon coating with light stabilizer UV326,UV531 and 770 on ultraviolet (UV) aging resistance of bitumen were investigated by testing the viscosity,softening point and the changes of chemical component before and after UV aging. The results show that UV aging resistance of bitumen is improved due to the good weatherability of organosilicon. And the UV aging resistance of bitumen is further enhanced by adding light stabilizer into organosilicon coating due to the good UV absorption of light stabilizers. Bitumen coated with organosilicon coating containing UV326 exhibits better UV aging resistance in comparison with bitumen coated with organosilicon containing UV531 or 770. 展开更多

Influence of Ageing with UV Radiation on Physicochemical Properties of Acrylic-Polyurethane Coatings

Investigated systems of acrylic-polyurethane coatings consisted of three kinds of coatings: base coat (acrylic), intermediate (polyurethane) and top coat (acrylic);each made up of two layers. Mean thickness of the coating system was equal (145 ± 1) μm. In time of accelerated UV ageing, electromagnetic radiation was emitted of wave length in the range (300 - 400) nm which was progressively inducing a destruction of coatings chemical structure, especially photooxidation and photolysis of coating material. Carried out X-ray investigations revealed increased contents of oxygen in aged coatings due to their photooxidation which resulted in increased tendency of coating microfragments to chip off from surface layer with the ageing time flow. The hardness increase of UV aged coatings was also observed which intensified their surface layer brittleness. This contributed to their thickness decrease by more than 10% after 2016 h of ageing. Photodestruction of UV aged coatings was documented as well by characteristics obtained during investigations carried out with DMA method use. A noticeable physical destruction of the coatings was observed in the form of silver cracks, etchings and grooves in surface layer as well as craters extending also into interlayer. Processes of physical and chemical destruction undergoing in aged coatings influenced roughness profile change and coatings surface topography shaping. After 2016 h of UV ageing, the roughness parameters (Ra, Rz, Rt) increased several times. Long-lasting UV radiation influence on the surface of investigated acrylic-polyurethane coating systems contributed to their decorativeness loss. Microscopic examinations revealed colour change (yellowing) of blue pigment contained in polyurethane interlayer. Decline in coating gloss was also observed as the result of surface roughness increase. 展开更多

A series of photosensitive random copolymers (UPDHES) were prepared by introducing acrylate groups onto the side chain of the copolymer backbone of N, N-domethyl amimethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), 2-hydroxypropyl acrylate (HEA), 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (EHA), and styrene (St) (PDHES). The molecular structure of UPDHES was characterized by FTIR, 1HNMR and GPC. The photopolymerization kinetics of UPDHES with different C=C content was investigated using real time FTIR in which it was found that the UPDHES system had notable photosensitivity. The effect of C=C content on the properties of cured films were studied by evaluating various film properties such as thermal stability, glass transition temperature and tensile properties. The thermal degradation of cured films was investigated via thermogravimetric analysis/infrared spectrometry (TGA-IR). Thus a series of UV-curable electrodeposition coatings with good photosensitivity and mechanical properties were prepared from a low-cost photosensitive random copolymer. 展开更多

Novel antibacterial polymer coatings were prepared by a facile thiol-yne click photopolymerization of 1-propargyl-3-allYl-l,3-diazanyl-2,4-cyclopentadiene bromide ([PAIMIBr) and tetra(3-mercapto-pro- pionate)pentaerythritol (PETMP) (2:1 molar ratio) using 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone (DMPA) as initiator. The antibacterial activity of the coatings was tested against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 292130) and Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) by the dynamic shake method. The evaluation results revealed the antibacterial polymer coatings exhibited excellent inhibitory activity against S. aureus and E. coil, especially for S. aureus. 展开更多

Poly[(mercaptopropyl)methylsiloxane] (PMMS)-based antibacterial polymer coatings have been prepared through a two-step sequential thiol-ene click chemistry utilizing 1-allyl-3-decylimidazolium bromide (ADIm) as antibacterial monomer and triallyl cyanurate (TAC) as the crosslinker. These films with different content of ADIm were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and pencil hardness. It was found that the mechanical and thermal properties of these films were largely influenced by the content of ADIm in the films. Films with imidazolium bromide groups displayed excellent antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus with 100% killing efficiency. 展开更多

【目的】利用可再生资源开发高性能UV固化涂料。【方法】以环氧大豆油(ESO)与蓖麻油酸(RA)无溶剂开环制备大豆油基多元醇(ESOR)。利用异佛尔酮二异氰酸酯和丙烯酸羟乙酯的半加成产物对ESOR的末端改性,合成了一系列环氧大豆油基聚氨酯丙... 【目的】利用可再生资源开发高性能UV固化涂料。【方法】以环氧大豆油(ESO)与蓖麻油酸(RA)无溶剂开环制备大豆油基多元醇(ESOR)。利用异佛尔酮二异氰酸酯和丙烯酸羟乙酯的半加成产物对ESOR的末端改性,合成了一系列环氧大豆油基聚氨酯丙烯酸酯光敏树脂(ER-IH5、ER-IH7及ER-IH9)。以其为成膜物制备UV固化涂料,系统考察了末端双键含量对涂料性能的影响。【结果】随着光敏树脂双键含量的增加,UV固化涂料的拉伸强度、铅笔硬度、凝胶含量及耐化学介质性显著增强。其中ER-IH9涂料性能最优,透光率>95%、雾度<1%、拉伸强度26.1 MPa、铅笔硬度为6H、附着力0级、凝胶含量96.5%,吸水率仅0.87%,且在酸、碱介质中浸泡后质量损失最低。【结论】该UV固化涂料在高硬度及高透明要求的领域展现出良好应用前景。 展开更多
