T he residual stray magnetic fields present in ferromagnetic casting slabs were investigated in this work, which result from the magnetic fields generated during the steel casting process.Existing optical detection methods face challenges owing to surface oxide scales, and conventional high-precision magnetic sensors are ineffective at high temperatures. To overcome these limitations,a small coil sensor was employed to measure the residual magnetism strength in oscillation traces, using metal magnetic memory and electromagnetic induction methods, which can carry out detection without an external excitation source.Using this technology, the proposed scheme successfully detects defects at high tempe-ratures(up to 670℃)without a cooling device. The key findings include the ability to detect both surface and near-surface defects, such as cracks and oscillation marks, with an enhanced signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)of 7.2 dB after signal processing. The method’s practicality was validated in a steel mill environment, where testing on casting slabs effectively detected defects, providing a foundation for improving industrial quality control. The proposed detection scheme offers a significant advancement in nondestructive testing(NDT)for high-temperature applications, contributing to more efficient and accurate monitoring of ferromagnetic material integrity. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Familial adenomatous polyposis(FAP)is a disorder of autosomal dominant inheritance that is responsible for around 1%of colorectal cancer(CRC)cases.AIM To determine the mutation profile of FAP-specific to the Hungarian population.METHODS This prospective single-center study enrolled patients with clinically suspected FAP or attenuated FAP(aFAP).Whole-exome next-generation sequencing was performed to detect variants of 50 FAP priority genes and 173 CRC predisposing genes or other CRC disease-associated genes. To identify larger deletions and insertions,a multiplex amplifiable probe hybridization technique was used. The identified genes were then classified according to the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics guidelines.RESULTS A total of 26 index patients with clinically suspected FAP(n=21)and aFAP(n=5)were enrolled.APC gene alterations were confirmed in 92.31%of the cases(region 1B deletion,n=2;whole-gene deletion,n=4;frameshift mutation,n=2;nonsense mutation,n=5,and splice mutation,n=1),with the remaining two cases having CHEK2 and MSH3 gene alterations.According to pathogenicity,21 cases had pathogenic mutations,6 cases had likely pathogenic mutations, and 16 cases had variants of unknown significance(VUS).The most frequent of the latter were the POLE(n=5)and PIEZO1(n=4)gene variants.CONCLUSION Germline mutations in the APC gene were confirmed in more than 90%of Hungarian patients with clinically suspected FAP.Although the role of VUS genes is unclear, they are highly likely to play a role in the development of CRC. 展开更多

Severe failures of nonstructural components have occurred during previous earthquakes.Claddings are one of the most widely used nonstructural component and are installed in many modern buildings;therefore,an evaluation of their seismic performance is important and cannot be ignored. To investigate the seismic performance of large-sized high performance concrete cladding(HPCC),a series of full-scale experimental tests were conducted using a unidirectional shaking table.A steel supporting frame was used to install the HPCCs and reproduce the effects of the building under earthquake. The tests were divided into two parts:in-plane(IP)testing and out-plane(OP)testing.Three recorded accelerograms, one artificial accelerogram, and one sinusoidal accelerogram were used to conduct the shaking table tests. The results show that the maximum recorded IP responses of acceleration and interstory drift ratio were 1.04 g and 1/97,while the OP responses were 1.02 g and 1/51.The HPCCs functioned well throughout the entire experimental protocol. The fundamental frequency of the HPCCs systems rarely changed after the tests. 展开更多

Joining dissimilar materials encounters significant engineering challenges due to the contrast in material properties that makes conventional welding not feasible.Magnetic Pulse Welding(MPW)offers a solidstate joining technique that overcomes these issues by using impact to create strong bonds without melting the substrate materials. This study investigates the weldability of aluminum alloy Al-5754 with Al-7075 and MARS 380 steel, used in armouring solutions of defense systems,by the use of MPW.In this work, weldability windows are investigated by varying standoff distances between the coating material and its substrate(0.25-4.5 mm)and discharge energies(5-13 kJ)with both O-shape and U-shape inductors.Mechanical strength of the welded joints were assessed through single lap shear tests, identifying optimal welding parameters. Then, the velocity profiles of the flyer plates were measured using heterodyne velocimetry to understand the dynamics of the impact. Then, substructures assembled with the optimal welding conditions were subjected to ballistic testing using 7.62 mm×51 mm NATO and 9 mm×19 mm Parabellum munitions to evaluate the resilience of the welds under ballistic impact. The outcomes demonstrate that MPW effectively joins Al-5754 with both Al-7075 and MARS 380,producing robust welds capable of withstanding ballistic impacts under certain conditions. This research advances the application of MPW in lightweight ballistic protection of defense systems, contributing to the development of more resilient and lighter protective structures. 展开更多

It is challenging to diagnose isolated hyperbilirubinemia with rare and complex etiologies under the constraints of traditional testing conditions.Herein,we present a rare case of coexisting Gilbert syndrome(GS)and erythropoietic protoporphyria(EPP),which has not been previously documented.CASE SUMMARY We present a rare case of coexisting GS and EPP in a 23-year-old Chinese male with a long history of jaundice and recently found splenomegaly.Serial nonspecific hemolysis screening tests yielded inconsistent results, and investigations for common hemolytic etiologies were negative. However,Levitt’s carbon monoxide breath test, which measures erythrocyte lifespan(the gold-standard marker of hemolysis),demonstrated significant hemolysis, revealing a markedly shortened erythrocyte lifespan of 11 days(normal average 120 days).Genetic testing subsequently confirmed EPP with a homozygous ferrochelatase gene mutation and GS with a heterozygous uridine diphosphate glucuronosyl trans-ferase 1A1 gene mutation.CONCLUSION The rapid,non-invasive Levitt’s carbon monoxide breath test resolved the diagnostic challenge posed by a rare and complex cause of hyperbilirubinemia. 展开更多

Hydraulic stimulation technology is widely employed to enhance the permeability of geothermal reservoirs.Nevertheless, accurately predicting hydraulic fracture propagation in complex geological conditions remains challenging, thereby hindering the effective utilization of existing natural fractures. In this study,a phase field model was developed utilizing the finite element method to examine the influence of fluid presence, stress conditions, and natural fractures on the initiation and propagation of hydraulic fractures. The model employs Biot's poroelasticity theory to establish the coupling between the displacement field and the fluid field, while the phase field theory is applied to simulate fracture behavior. The results show that whenσ_(x0)/σ_(y0)<3 or qf<20 kg/(m^(3)·s),the presence of natural fractures can alter the original propagation direction of hydraulic fractures.Conversely,in the absence of these conditions, the propagation path of natural fractures is predominantly influenced by the initial stress field.Furthermore, based on the analysis of breakdown pressure and damage area, the optimal intersection angle between natural fractures and hydraulic fractures is determined to range from 45°to 60°.Finally,once a dominant channel forms, initiating and propagating hydraulic fractures in other directions becomes increasingly difficult, even in highly fractured areas. This method tackles the challenges of initiating and propagating hydraulic fractures in complex geological conditions, providing a theoretical basis for optimizing Enhanced Geothermal System(EGS)projects. 展开更多

In high-risk industrial environments like nuclear power plants, precise defect identification and localization are essential for maintaining production stability and safety. However, the complexity of such a harsh environment leads to significant variations in the shape and size of the defects. To address this challenge,we propose the multivariate time series segmentation network(MSSN),which adopts a multiscale convolutional network with multi-stage and depth-separable convolutions for efficient feature extraction through variable-length templates. To tackle the classification difficulty caused by structural signal variance,MSSN employs logarithmic normalization to adjust instance distributions.Furthermore,it integrates classification with smoothing loss functions to accurately identify defect segments amid similar structural and defect signal subsequences. Our algorithm evaluated on both the Mackey-Glass dataset and industrial dataset achieves over 95%localization and demonstrates the capture capability on the synthetic dataset. In a nuclear plant's heat transfer tube dataset,it captures 90%of defect instances with75%middle localization F1 score. 展开更多

Penetration testing plays a critical role in ensuring security in an increasingly interconnected world. Despite advancements in technology leading to smaller, more portable devices, penetration testing remains reliant on traditional laptops and computers, which, while portable, lack true ultra-portability. This paper explores the potential impact of developing a dedicated, ultra-portable, low-cost device for on-the-go penetration testing. Such a device could replicate the core functionalities of advanced penetration testing tools, including those found in Kali Linux, within a compact form factor that fits easily into a pocket. By offering the convenience and portability akin to a smartphone, this innovative device could redefine the way penetration testers operate, enabling them to carry essential tools wherever they go and ensuring they are always prepared to conduct security assessments efficiently. This approach aims to revolutionize penetration testing by merging high functionality with unparalleled portability. 展开更多

Cone penetration testing(CPT)and its variant with pore pressure measurements(CPTu)are versatile tools that have been traditionally used for in situ geotechnical site investigations. These investigations are among the most challenging yet indispensable tasks, providing a crucial reference for infrastructure planning, design and construction. However, data obtained through the CPT/CPTu testing often exhibit significant variability, even at closely spaced test points. This variability is primarily attributed to the complex mineral compositions and sedimentary process of the Quaternary sediments.Problems induced by the scattering data include the difficulties in estimating the shear strength of the sediments and determining the appropriate bearing stratum for pile foundations. In this paper, the conventional interpretation methods of the CPT/CPTu data are enhanced with sedimentary facies knowledge. The geotechnical investigation mainly involves 42 CPTu tests(39 essential data sets available)and 4 boring samples.Sediment types are interpreted from the CPTu data and calibrated by the nearby boring samples.Sedimentary facies are derived from the interpreted sequence stratigraphy, for which the interpretation skills are summarized in the form of characteristic curves of the CPTu data.Scattering distribution of the sediment types and their mechanical parameters are well explained by the sedimentary facies. The sediments are then categorized into a few groups by their sedimentary facies, resulting in reduced uncertainties and scattering in terms of shear strength.Bearing stratum of pile foundations is also suggested based on the sedimentary regulations. 展开更多

The interpretation and application of CPT(cone penetration test)results is characterized by considerable variability of data, either in measured or correlated parameters.According to the requirements of Eurocode 7 the existing variability in soil properties has to be taken into account statistically during the determination of the characteristic values of each parameter. This should be done by selecting a cautious estimate of the value affecting the limit state.Obtaining the characteristic values of CPT measurements is not an easy task and on this aspect nor clear neither unified guidelines exist. This paper focuses in several approaches to characterize the cone resistance and the sleeve friction using simple statistical analysis,in order for these parameters to be applicable in design.Similar procedures are then applied to determine the characteristic values of correlated parameters from CPT such as the effective friction angle for sands and the undrained shear strength for clays. The resulting characteristic values of the considered parameters emphasize the fact that the prediction and the interpretation of characteristic values of soil properties is a complicated and biased procedure. 展开更多

Conventional empirical equations for estimating undrained shear strength(s_(u))from piezocone penetration test(CPTu)data, without incorporating soil physical properties, often lack the accuracy and robustness required for geotechnical site investigations. This study introduces a hybrid virus colony search(VCS)algorithm that integrates the standard VCS algorithm with a mutation-based search mechanism to develop high-performance XGBoost learning models to address this limitation.A dataset of 372 seismic CPTu and corresponding soil physical properties data from 26 geotechnical projects in Jiangs_(u)Province,China,was collected for model development.Comparative evaluations demonstrate that the proposed hybrid VCS-XGBoost model exhibits s_(u)perior performance compared to standard meta-heuristic algorithm-based XGBoost models. The res_(u)lts highlight that the consideration of soil physical properties significantly improves the predictive accuracy of s_(u),emphasizing the importance of considering additional soil information beyond CPTu data for accurate s_(u)estimation. 展开更多

Objective: Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome (HBOC) increases the risk of developing breast, ovarian, prostate, and pancreatic cancers. With the insurance coverage for BRCA genetic testing, the number of individuals diagnosed with HBOC has increased. To use these test results effectively, cascade genetic testing (CGT) is recommended for at-risk relatives;however, it is not yet widely available. The purpose of this study was to investigate the willingness of the general population to share genetic test results and undergo CGT, as well as to analyze the factors influencing these decisions. Based on these findings, the study aimed to identify the types of support needed to support the sharing of genetic test results and promote the use of CGT. Methods: An online survey was conducted with 500 participants (50 men and women from each of the five generations, ranging from 20 to 69 years). Results: Among the HBOC blood relatives, 51.2% wanted to share the genetic results and 71.9% expressed a willingness to undergo CGT. “Matters to be shared with relatives” and “Helpful for my cancer prevention” were identified as key factors promoting the willingness to share the BRCA genetic test results and undergo CGT. The motivation for “Helpful for my cancer prevention” had a particularly strong influence on the decision to undergo CGT. Conclusion: In the general population, there is an emerging understanding that the genetic information impacts not only the individuals but also their entire families and can be valuable for cancer prevention. To promote the sharing of BRCA genetic test results and CGT uptake, the healthcare providers should offer support tailored to each family’s circumstances and establish cancer prevention measures recommended for HBOC. 展开更多

In order to identify the development characteristics of fracture network in tight conglomerate reservoir of Mahu after hydraulic fracturing,a hydraulic fracturing test site was set up in the second and third members of Triassic Baikouquan Formation(T1b2 and T1b3)in Ma-131 well area, which learned from the successful experience of hydraulic fracturing test sites in North America(HFTS-1).Twelve horizontal wells and a high-angle coring well MaJ02 were drilled. The orientation, connection, propagation law and major controlling factors of hydraulic fractures were analyzed by comparing results of CT scans, imaging logs, direct observation of cores from Well MaJ02,and combined with tracer monitoring data. Results indicate that:(1)Two types of fractures have developed by hydraulic fracturing,i.e.tensile fractures and shear fractures.Tensile fractures are approximately parallel to the direction of the maximum horizontal principal stress, and propagate less than 50 m from perforation clusters.Shear fractures are distributed among tensile fractures and mainly in the strike-slip mode due to the induced stress field among tensile fractures, and some of them are in conjugated pairs.Overall, tensile fractures alternate with shear fractures, with shear fractures dominated and activated after tensile ones.(2)Tracer monitoring results indicate that communication between wells was prevalent in the early stage of production, and the static pressure in the fracture gradually decreased and the connectivity between wells reduced as production progressed.(3)Density of hydraulic fractures is mainly affected by the lithology and fracturing parameters, which is smaller in the mudstone than the conglomerate.Larger fracturing scale and smaller cluster spacing lead to a higher fracture density, which are important directions to improve the well productivity. 展开更多

The water drop penetration time(WDPT)test consists of placing water drops on a material's surface in order to evaluate how long it takes to penetrate the pores. It is used to evaluate the hydrophobicity of materials. This study aims at investigating in more detail the soil-water interaction during the test, exposing its mechanism. For that,a model soil named Hamburg Sand was coated with a hydrophobic fluoropolymer and then a WDPT test was performed while computed tomography(CT)images were taken.Tomography experiments were performed at the P07 high-energy materials science(HEMS)beamline, operated by Helmholtz–Zentrum Hereon,at the storage ring PETRA III at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron(DESY)in Hamburg.Using synchrotron radiation,a tomogram can be obtained in about 10 min,way less time than regular laboratory X-ray sources usually owned by universities. The faster imaging enables the observation of the drop penetration during time and thus provides insight into the dynamics of the process. After that, digital discrete image correlation is performed to track the displacement of the grains throughout time. From the results one can observe that,as the drop is absorbed at the material's surface, the grains directly around the droplet base are dragged to the liquid-air interface around the drop, revealing grain kinematics during capillary interactions of the penetrating liquid and sand grains. 展开更多

The fundamental shear horizontal(SH0) wave has several unique features that are attractive for long-range nondestructive testing(NDT). By a careful design of the geometric configuration, electromagnetic acoustic transducers(EMATs) have the capability to generate a wide range of guided wave modes, such as Lamb waves and shear-horizontal(SH) waves in plates. However, the performance of EMATs is influenced by their parameters. To evaluate the performance of periodic permanent magnet(PPM) EMATs, a distributed-line-source model is developed to calculate the angular acoustic field cross-section in the far-field. Numerical analysis is conducted to investigate the performance of such EMATs with different geometric parameters, such as period and number of magnet arrays, and inner and outer coil widths. Such parameters have a great influence on the directivity of the generated SH0 waves that arises mainly in the amplitude and width of both main and side lobes. According to the numerical analysis, these parameters are optimized to obtain better directivity. Optimized PPM EMATs are designed and used for NDT of strip plates. Experimental results show that the lateral boundary of the strip plate has no perceivable influence on SHO-wave propagation, thus validating their used in NDT. The proposed model predicts the radiation pattern ofPPM EMATs, and can be used for their parameter optimization. 展开更多
