While the exact neurobiological mechanisms remain unclear, the most widely accepted explanation is the sensory conflict theory, which identifies two main sources of conflict: discrepancies between visual and vestibular inputs and conflicts within the vestibular system itself. This study aims to evaluate otolith-mediated verticality perception in first-time seafarers on board a naval frigate ship using the Subjective Visual Vertical(SVV) test. Methods:This observational study was conducted on board a naval frigate and involved two groups. The case group consisted of50 newly recruited sailors experiencing their first sea voyage. The SVV test was conducted at three time points: prior to embarkation, during an active episode of sea sickness, and after disembarkation. A control group of 50 healthy, experienced sailors-regular seafarers with no history of vestibular symptoms underwent the same SVV testing at corresponding intervals. The results from both groups were collected and analyzed to assess changes in verticality perception related to sea exposure and sea sickness. Results:Analysis of the SVV test data from the 50 newly recruited sailors(case group) demonstrated a statistically significant difference compared to the control group of experienced sailors. During an active episode of sea sickness, the case group exhibited a notable tilt and deviation in SVV angles, indicating altered verticality perception. These deviations reduced significantly 24 hours post-disembarkation, suggesting an improvement in verticality perception once the motion stimulus was removed. Conclusion:This distinctive study assessed otolith-mediated verticality perception using the SVV test in first-time seafarers experiencing sea sickness aboard a naval frigate. Our findings emphasize the functional importance of the otolith organs in maintaining spatial orientation during maritime motion exposure. The observed SVV deviations support the subjective vertical conflict theory, highlighting the role of vestibular-visual mismatch in the development of sea sickness. However, our findings more likely reflect transient functional disturbance or overstimulation rather than a pre-existing utricular asymmetry alone. Based on the pattern of SVV deviation and recovery, we propose that the utricle may play a more significant role than the saccule in inducing sea sickness.展开更多

Studies have shown that discrepancies can occur between subjective data regarding sleep disturbances and the impact of insomnia and objective assays, and surrogate markers of sleep and sleep disturbances. Both objective and subjective measures should be incorporated into clinic studies. It seems likely that sleep quality is represented by a combination of more than one subjective sleep parameter. Objective and subjective assessments of sleep quality may relate to different parameters. Future studies incorporated both subjective and objective measures could help to address the sleep disorders.展开更多

When the specifications of the electromagnetic beam are fixed, the stimulus is solely described by the heating duration. The binary response of a subject, escape or no escape, is determined by the stimulus and a subjective threshold that varies among test realizations. We study four methods for inferring the median subjective threshold in psychophysical experiments: 1) sample median, 2) maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) with 2 variables, 3) MLE with 1 variable, and 4) adaptive Bayesian method. While methods 1 - 3 require samples of time to escape measured in the method of limits, method 4 utilizes binary outcomes observed in the method of constant stimuli. We find that a) the adaptive Bayesian method converges and is as efficient as the sample median even when the assumed model distribution is incorrect;b) this robust convergence is lost if we infer the mean instead of the median;c) for the optimal performance in an uncertain situation, it is best to use a wide model distribution;d) the predicted error from the posterior standard deviation is unreliable, dominated by the assumed model distribution.展开更多

The invisibility was even taken as one of the standards of a good translator. However, great change happens, especially after the"culture turn"in translation study and the role of the translators has been laid emphasis on. This kind of sharp change has led to two extreme thoughts on this issue: scholars choose either total invisibility or complete subjectivity. This paper puts forward an inter-subjective system, in which the subjectivity should be emphasized only with constraints. The other subjects in the inter-subjective system contribute to the restriction of the subjectivity of the translator during the translation process.By writing this paper, the author wishes to present a comprehensive and balanced way of understanding translators' subjectivity. Therefore, no matter analyzing the translation process or evaluating translation products, people will be more objective towards the role of translators.展开更多

METHODS: A total of 751 patients diagnosed with gastrointestinal cancer between August 2004 and August 2006 were enrolled in this study. Within 72 h after admission, SGA, anthropometric parameters, and laboratory tests were used to assess the nutritional status of each patient. The outcome variables including hospital stay, complications, and in-hospital medical expenditure were also obtained.RESULTS: Based on the results of SGA, 389 (51.8%), 332 (44.2%), and 30 (4.0%) patients were classified into well nourished group (SGA-A), mildly to moderately malnourished group (SGA-B), and severely malnourished group (SGA-C), respectively. The prevalence of malnutrition classified by SGA, triceps skinfold thickness (TSF), mid-upper arm muscle circumference (MAMC), albumin (ALB), prealbumin (PA), and body mass index (BMI) was 48.2%, 39.4%, 37.7%, 31.3%, 21.7%, and 9.6%, respectively. In addition, ANOVA tests revealed significant differences in body mass index (BMI), TSF, PA, and ALB of patients in different SGA groups. The more severely malnourished the patient was, the lower the levels of BMI, TSF, PA, and ALB were (P 〈 0.05). x^2 tests showed a significant difference in SGA classification between patients receiving different types of treatment (surgery vs chemotherapy/radiotherapy). As the nutritional status classified by SGA deteriorated, the patients stayed longer in hospital and their medical expenditures increased significantly. Furthermore, multiple regression analysis showed that SGA and serum ALB could help predict the medical expenditures and hospital stay of patients undergoing surgery. The occurrence of complications increased in parallel with the increasing grade of SGA, and was the highest in the SGA-C group (23.3%) and the lowest in the SGA-A group (16.8%). CONCLUSION: SGA is a reliable assessment too and helps to predict the hospital stay and medica expenditures of Chinese surgical gastrointestina cancer patients.展开更多

CONCLUSION:The double-pass system provides accurate and reliable estimates of the SE that can be used for clinical studies. This technique can determine the correct focus position to assess the ocular optical quality. However,it has a relatively small measuring range in comparison with autorefractors(-8.00 to +5.00D),and requires prior information on the refractive state of the patient.展开更多

文摘Background Adolescents’subjective well-being(SWB)is strongly linked to mental health, academic achievement, social relationships, and quality of life, and is a key predictor of life outcomes in adulthood.Mental health and addictive behaviors are the two main factors influencing SWB.This study aimed to identify key mental health and addictive behavior factors associated with adolescent SWB through machine learning models. Methods The data for this study comes from the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children(HBSC)survey 2017/18.The study data contains health data from 60,450 adolescents aged 10–16 years. The study used the XGBoost machine learning model to analyze the impact of mental health and addictive behaviors on adolescent SWB.Gain was used to analyze the significance of the variables. The direction of action of the variables and the interaction between the variables were analyzed using the SHapley Additive exPlanations(SHAP)method. Results The model in this study has an accuracy of 86.7%and an AUC value of 0.85,showing its good predictive performance.Six key variables were filtered through Gain analysis.Feeling low and health as the two most important factors affecting SWB,with these two variables contributing 51.38%and 19.65%,respectively.Friends and thinking body as major factors influencing SWB in mental health.Smoking lifetime and sweets as major factors influencing SWB in addictive behaviors. The interactions and characteristic dependencies between these variables were further analyzed. The results showed that feeling low, friends, and sweets had a positive effect on SWB,while health and smoking lifetime showed a negative effect. In addition,a moderate thinking body contributes to SWB,whereas being too fat and too thin are both associated with decreased levels of SWB.Conclusion Mental health and addictive behavioral factors such as feeling low, friends, sweets, and smoking lifetime were significant factors influencing SWB.This provides a scientific basis for the development of public health policies and interventions aimed at enhancing adolescent well-being.
文摘Subjective well-being is a key indicator of quality of life and a crucial factor for successful aging among older adults. However, few studies have explored the subjective well-being among older adults from the perspective of digital literacy. Therefore, this study explores the relationship between digital literacy and subjective well-being using data on 4270 older adults from the 2020 China Family Panel Studies(CFPS)dataset.PROCESS mediation analysis results indicated digital literacy is associated with higher subjective well-being among the older adults.Digital literacy was associated with the frequency of physical exercise and consumption. Moreover,Digital literacy can also enhance the subjective well-being among older adults by increasing the frequency of physical exercise, and consumption, and a chain mediator subjective well-being.These findings align with the theoretical framework of digital health literacy.Theory which posits that health information obtained through digital literacy can help older adults better engage in healthy lifestyles, thereby enhancing their quality of life. These findings hold significant practical implications for enhancing the subjective well-being among older adults and advancing the development of successful aging.
文摘This study employed a longitudinal design involving 224 college students in Quanzhou City,Fujian Province,China,to examine the predictive relationship between subjective well-being(life satisfaction, positive emotions, negative emotions)and academic achievement(GPA earned).Data were collected through two questionnaire surveys(one year apart). Results indicate that subjective well-being predicts academic achievement one year later.Specifically, life satisfaction and positive emotions exert significant predictive effects, while negative emotion shows no significant impact.Conversely, academic achievement did not significantly predict subjective well-being one year later. The study confirms that happiness is a positive predictor of academic achievement, rather than academic achievement influencing happiness. However, the explained variance is small(2-4%),indicating that other factors play a more substantial role.Further analysis indicates that positive emotions exert long-term effects on academic achievement by broadening cognitive and behavioral patterns and enhancing stress resilience.Life satisfaction indirectly promotes academic achievement by increasing learning engagement and autonomy. The study suggests that higher education should prioritize happiness education, enhancing student academic achievement through value transformation and well-being training.Limitations include regional sample concentration, uncontrolled socioeconomic variables, and the need for larger, more diverse samples in future research.
文摘This longitudinal study investigated how self-management and learning burnout influences the relationship between habitual mobile phone use and subjective well-being amongfirst-year university students.A sample of 1172 Chinese university students participated in a two-wave survey, with data collected six months apart at two time points(T1,T2).The results of Pearson correlation revealed that higher habitual mobile phone use at T1 was associated with lower subjective well-being at T2.Self-management was associated with healthy phone use habits and higher subjective wellbeing.Learning burnout risk was higher with habitual phone usage.Lower self-management and learning burnout at T2 played a chain mediating role between habitual mobile phone use at T1 and subjective well-being at T2 so that subjective well-being was much lower that with either of the variables alone.Overall, thesefindings suggest that habitual mobile phone use is a reliable predictor of college student’s subjective well-being,by their self-management and level of learning burnout over time. This research highlights the long-term impact of habitual mobile phone use on students’subjective well-being and provides valuable insights for developing effective interventions to support students well-being.
文摘Objectives:Sea sickness, a form of motion sickness, is a common condition among sailors on various sailing vessels, primarily due to their roll and pitch movements. Based on the pattern of SVV deviation and recovery, we propose that the utricle may play a more significant role than the saccule in inducing sea sickness.

文摘AIM:To compare the subjective refraction data with autorefraction findings in high astigmatisms.METHODS:In a cross-sectional study, sampling was done from in different geographic regions in Iran using a multistage random cluster sampling method. All study participants underwent cycloplegic auto-refraction and subjective refraction using the red-green test.RESULTS:In this study,277 eyes of 158 students aged 8 to 15y were analyzed.According to the results, the mean difference between subjective refraction and autorefraction in measuring sphere, cylinder, spherical equivalent,J0,and J45 was-0.18±0.76,-0.36±0.40,-0.36±0.79,0.15±0.20,and 0.05±0.21 respectively. The correlation of these two refraction methods in measuring the aforementioned indices was 0.963,0.898,0.960,0.931,and 0.948 respectively. The 95%limits of agreement of the two methods in measuring the above indices were-1.66 to 1.31,-1.14 to 0.42,-1.91 to 1.19,-0.24 to 0.54,and-0.36 to 0.47 respectively. The agreement between the two methods decreased with increasing cylinder power, and the best agreement was found in myopic individuals.CONCLUSION:The measurements obtained by autorefractometer have a significantly higher cylinder average compared to subjective refraction. However,in the cylinder range of 4–5 diopters, the values of J0 and J45 do not have a high correlation.
文摘AIM:To compare objective dry retinoscopy and subjective refraction measurements in patients with mild keratoconus(KCN)and quantify any differences.METHODS:This cross-sectional study was done on 68 eyes of 68 patients diagnosed with mild KCN.Objective dry retinoscopy using autorefractometer and subjective refraction measurements were performed.Sphere,cylinder,J0,J45,and spherical equivalent values were compared between the two techniques.RESULTS:The mean age of 68 patients with mild KCN was 21.32±5.03y(12–35y).There were 37(54.4%)males.Objective refraction yielded significantly more myopic sphere(-1.44 D vs-0.57 D),higher cylinder magnitude(-2.24 D vs-1.48 D),and more myopic spherical equivalent(-2.56 D vs-1.31 D)compared to subjective refraction(all P<0.05).The mean differences were-0.87 D for sphere,-0.76 D for cylinder,and-1.25 D for spherical equivalent. No significant differences were found for J0 and J45 values, indicating agreement in astigmatism axis(P>0.05).CONCLUSION:In patients with mild KCN,objective dry retinoscopy overestimates the degree of myopia and astigmatism compared to subjective refraction. The irregular cornea in KCN likely impacts objective measurements.Subjective refraction allows compensation for irregularity, providing a more accurate correction. When determining refractive targets, the tendency of objective methods to overcorrect should be considered.
文摘Subjective and objective measures of sleep structure or quality could help to characterize the chronic sleep disturbances, with relation to patients' risk factor profiles and co-morbidities. Future studies incorporated both subjective and objective measures could help to address the sleep disorders.
文摘We consider the response of a test subject upon a skin area being heated with an electromagnetic wave or a contact surface. We find that a) the adaptive Bayesian method converges and is as efficient as the sample median even when the assumed model distribution is incorrect;b) this robust convergence is lost if we infer the mean instead of the median;c) for the optimal performance in an uncertain situation, it is best to use a wide model distribution;d) the predicted error from the posterior standard deviation is unreliable, dominated by the assumed model distribution.

文摘Subjective visual vertical(SVV)and subjective visual horizontal(SVH)tests can be used to evaluate the perception of verticality and horizontality, respectively, and can aid the diagnosis of otolith dysfunction in clinical practice. In this study,SVV and SVH screen version tests are implemented using virtual reality(VR)equipment;the proposed test method promotes a more immersive feeling for the subject while using a simple equipment configuration and possessing excellent mobility. To verify the performance of the proposed VR-based SVV and SVH tests,a reliable comparison was made between the traditional screen-based SVV and SVH tests and the proposed method, based on 30 healthy subjects. The average results of our experimental tests on the VR-based binocular SVV and SVH equipment were−0.15◦±1.74 and 0.60◦±1.18,respectively.The proposed VR-based method satisfies the normal tolerance for horizontal or vertical lines,i.e.,a±3◦error,as defined in previous studies, and it can be used to replace existing test methods.
文摘Throughout the past years, the important role of translators has always been overlooked. Therefore, no matter analyzing the translation process or evaluating translation products, people will be more objective towards the role of translators.

文摘AIM: To investigate the role of subjective global assessment (SGA) in nutritional assessment and outcome prediction of Chinese patients with gastrointestinal cancer. CONCLUSION: SGA is a reliable assessment too and helps to predict the hospital stay and medica expenditures of Chinese surgical gastrointestina cancer patients.

文摘AIM:To evaluate the accuracy of spherical equivalent(SE) estimates of a double-pass system and to compare it with retinoscopy, subjective refraction and a table mounted autorefractor.METHODS:Non-cycloplegic refraction was performed on 125 eyes of 65 healthy adults(age 23.5±3.0 years) from October 2010 to January 2011 using retinoscopy, subjective refraction, autorefraction(Auto kerato refractometer TOPCON KR-8100,Japan) and a double pass system(Optical Quality Analysis System,OQAS,Visiometrics S.L.,Spain).Nine consecutive measurements with the double-pass system were performed on a subgroup of 22 eyes to assess repeatability. To evaluate the trueness of the OQAS instrument, the SE laboratory bias between the double pass system and the other techniques was calculated.RESULTS:The SE mean coefficient of repeatability obtained was 0.22D.Significant correlations could be established between the OQAS and the SE obtained with retinoscopy(r=0.956,P【0.001),subjective refraction(r=0.955,P【0.001) and autorefraction(r=0.957,P【0.001).The differences in SE between the double-pass system and the other techniques were significant(P【0.001),but lacked clinical relevance except for retinoscopy;Retinoscopy gave more hyperopic values than the double-pass system-0.51±0.50D as well as the subjective refraction-0.23±0.50D;More myopic values were achieved by means of autorefraction 0.24±0.49D. CONCLUSION:The double-pass system provides accurate and reliable estimates of the SE that can be used for clinical studies. This technique can determine the correct focus position to assess the ocular optical quality. However,it has a relatively small measuring range in comparison with autorefractors(-8.00 to +5.00D),and requires prior information on the refractive state of the patient.
文摘Objective:The paper aims to explore the status of intensive care unit(ICU)nurses'self-esteem,job satisfaction, and subjective well-being and to investigate the relationship among the three elements. Methods:A cross-sectional survey of 224 nurses from five teaching hospitals in Tianjin,China, was conducted.Self-esteem scale, job satisfaction scale, and subjective well-being scale were used to explore the status of ICU nurses'self-esteem,job satisfaction, and subjective well-being.Correlation among the three elements was calculated by SPSS 17.0.Results:The scores of three scales(i.e.,ICU nurses'self-esteem,job satisfaction, and subjective well-being)were 27.67±3.41,43.57±9.04,and 69.73±11.60,respectively.The subjective well-being was significantly positively correlated with self-esteem and job satisfaction(r=0.454,P<0.01;r=0.584,P<0.01,respectively).Conclusion:The study shows that the prevalence of subjective well-being and self-esteem with ICU nurses are at a low level, and job satisfaction is at the median level.Associations among self-esteem,job satisfaction, and subjective well-being in ICUs have been confirmed.Self-esteem and job satisfaction positively correlated with nurse subjective well-being.The higher the self-esteem and job satisfaction levels are,the stronger the subjective well-being is.The working pressure in ICUs cannot be alleviated temporarily;hence,to promote a high subjective well-being,managers and ICU nurses increase their self-esteem and job satisfaction through taking strategies that strengthen psychological construction.
