It is essential for the research workers to be able to quantitatively characterise ENPs in the environment and subsequently to assist the risk assessment of the ENPs. This study hence explored the application of nanoparticle tracking system(NTA) to quantitatively describe the behaviour of the ENPs in natural sediment-water systems. The NTA allows the measurement of both particle number concentration(PNC) and particle size distribution(PSD) of the ENPs. The developed NTA method was applied to a range of gold and magnetite ENPs with a selection of surface properties. The results showed that the positively-charged ENPs interacted more strongly with the sediment than neutral and negatively-charged ENPs. It was also found that the citrate coated Au ENPs had a higher distribution percentage(53%) than 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid coated Au ENPs(20%) and citrate coated magnetite ENPs(21%). The principles of the electrostatic interactions between hard(and soft) acids and bases(HSAB) are used to explain such behaviours; the hard base coating(i.e. citrate ions) will interact more strongly with hard acid(i.e. magnetite) than soft acid(i.e. gold). The results indicate that NTA is a complementary method to existing approaches to characterise the fate and behaviour of ENPs in natural sediment.展开更多

The presence of the feeding device can lead to heterogeneity of drying and heating, and is the main factor responsible for pressure loss in short conveying systems. However, there is a lack of information concerning the axial and radial distributions of coarse particles in this type of configuration, despite the recent advances when dealing with fine particles (FCC catalyst). The present work therefore investigates a vertical venturi feeder with the conveying system operating in dilute-phase regime with 1 mm spherical glass particles. Experimental assays revealed the behavior of the mass flow rate of solids in the system, and pressure measurements were made along the riser in order to evaluate the accuracy of simulations. Euler-Euler simulations provided close estimation of the experimental pressure drop and the pressure drop according to distance in the linear region. Simulation of the fluid dynamics in the riser showed that solids clusters were formed at low concentrations near the feeding device, reflecting heterogeneity in the solid phase volume fraction.展开更多

The hidden lepton is in the forbidden lepton family, outside of the three lepton families of the Standard Model. Being forbidden, a single hidden lepton cannot exist alone;so it must exist in the lepton condensate as a composite of μ’ and μ’± hidden leptons and their corresponding antileptons. The calculated average mass of the hidden lepton condensate is 128.8 GeV in good agreements with the observed 125 or 126 GeV. The masses of the hidden lepton condensate and all elementary particles including leptons, quarks, and gauge bosons are derived from the periodic system of elementary particles. The calculated constituent masses are in good agreement with the observed values by using only four known constants: the number of the extra spatial dimensions in the eleven-dimensional membrane, the mass of electron, the mass of Z boson, and the fine structure constant.展开更多

The polymer particles treated included acrylonitrile butadiene styrene(ABS) and polypropylene(PP). These particles had diameters in the range of 3–5 mm. The initial studies were carried out using a laboratory-scale barrel reactor designed to treat polymer particle batch sizes of 20 g. A pilot-scale reactor that could treat 500 g particle batch sizes was then developed to facilitate pre-industrial-scale treatments. The effect of operating pulse density modulation(PDM) in the range 10%–100% and plasma treatment time on the level of activation of the treated polymers were then investigated. ABS revealed a larger decrease in water contact angle compared with PP after plasma treatment under the same conditions. The optimal treatment time of ABS(400 g of polymer particles) in the pilot-scale reactor was 15 min. The plasma-activated polymer particles were used to fabricate dog-bone polymer parts through injection molding.Mechanical testing of the resulting dog-bone polymer parts revealed a 10.5% increase in tensile strength compared with those fabricated using non-activated polymer particles.展开更多

The total energy has initially equidistributed among some of the lowest frequency modes. The thermalization time t_(eq) depending on system's energy density ε scales as t_(eq) ∝ε^(-4) only within a certain range of nonlinearity. In this range of nonlinearity, energies can interchange between the initial excited modes and other modes continuously with time until reaching the thermalized state. With a further decreasing nonlinearity, a steeper growth than ε^(-4) will appear. In the very weakly nonlinear regime, energies on low frequency modes are found to be frozen on large time scales. Redistribution of mode energies happens through the resonances of high frequency modes.展开更多

The dust lattice structures are characterized by particle distribution, nearest neighbor configuration and pair correlation function. The current autocorrelation function, the dispersion relation and sound speed are used to represent the wave properties. The wave propagation of the dust lattice closely relates to the lattice structure. It shows that the number of defect particles can affect the dust lattice local structure and then affect the dispersion relations of waves propagating in it. The presence of defect particles has a greater effect on the transverse waves than on the longitudinal waves of the dust lattice. The appropriate number of defect particles can weaken the anisotropy property of the lattice.展开更多

Thes...When the microscopic particles was depicted by linear Schrodinger equation, we find that the particles have only a wave feature, thus, a series of difficulties and intense disputations occur in quantum mechanics. These problems excite us to consider the nonlinear interactions among the particles or between the particle and background field, which is completely ignored in quantum mechanics. Thus we use the nonlinear Schrodinger equation to describe the natures of microscopic particles. In this case the natures and features of microscopic particles are considerably different from those in quantum mechanics, where the microscopic particles are localized and have truly a wave-particle duality. Meanwhile, they satisfy both the classical dynamics equation and Lagrangian and Hamilton equations and obey the conservation laws of mass, energy and momentum. These natures and features are due to the nonlinear interactions, which are generated in virtue of the interaction between the moved particles and background field through the mechanisms of self-trapping, self-focus and self-condensation. Finally, we verified experimentally the localization and wave-corpuscle features of microscopic particles described by the nonlinear Schrodinger equation using the properties of water soliton and optical-soliton depicted also by the nonlinear Schrodinger equation in water and optical fiber, respectively. Therefore, the new nonlinear quantum theory established on the basis of nonlinear Schrodinger equation is correct and credible. From this investigation we can not only solve difficulties and problems disputed for about a century by plenty of scientists in quantum mechanics but also promote the development of physics and enhance the knowledge and recognition levels to the essences of microscopic matter.展开更多

Euler-Euler simulations provided close estimation of the experimental pressure drop and the pressure drop according to distance in the linear region. Simulation of the fluid dynamics in the riser showed that solids clusters were formed at low concentrations near the feeding device, reflecting heterogeneity in the solid phase volume fraction.
文摘It is proposed that the observed Higgs Boson at the LHC is the Standard Model Higgs boson that adopts the existence of the hidden lepton condensate. The calculated constituent masses are in good agreement with the observed values by using only four known constants: the number of the extra spatial dimensions in the eleven-dimensional membrane, the mass of electron, the mass of Z boson, and the fine structure constant.

文摘This study reports the development and performance of a pilot-scale barrel atmospheric plasma reactor for the atmospheric plasma activation treatment of polymer particles. The plasma-activated polymer particles were used to fabricate dog-bone polymer parts through injection molding.Mechanical testing of the resulting dog-bone polymer parts revealed a 10.5% increase in tensile strength compared with those fabricated using non-activated polymer particles.

文摘Based on a vector radiative transfer model of the atmosphere–ocean system, the influence of oceanic components on radiation processes, including polarization effects, was investigated in the wavelength region ranging from 0.380 to 0.865 μm.The components considered were phytoplankton, inorganic suspended material(sediment),and colored, dissolved organic matter.Due to their important roles in oceanic radiation processes, the sensitivity of the bidirectional reflectance to the rough ocean surface, represented by the wind velocity 10 m above the ocean surface, and aerosol, were taken into account. The results demonstrated that both radiance and polarized radiance just below the ocean surface were sensitive to the change of the concentrations of the considered components, while the dependence of polarized radiance on the observation geometry was more sensitive than radiance.Significant differences in the specular plane existed between the impacts of the phytoplankton and sediment on the degree of polarization just above the ocean surface at 670 nm.At the top of the atmosphere(TOA),polarization was relatively insensitive to changing concentrations of ocean particles at longer wavelengths.Furthermore, the radiance at the TOA in the solar plane was more sensitive to the aerosol optical thickness than wind velocity. In contrast, wind velocity strongly influenced the radiance at the TOA in the sun glint region, while the polarization degree showed less dependence in that region. Finally,a nonlinear optimal inversion method was proposed to simultaneously retrieve the aerosol and wind velocity using radiance measurement.

文摘Global carbon cycle has received extensive attention, among which the river-estuary system is one of the important links connecting the carbon cycle between land and ocean. In this paper, the distribution and control factors of particulate organic carbon(POC)were studied by using the data of organic carbon contents and its carbon isotopic composition(δ13C)in the mainstream and estuary of Passur River in the Sundarbans area, combined with the hydrological and biological data measured by CTD.The results show that POC content ranged from 0.263 mg/L to 9.292 mg/L,and the POC content in the river section(averaged 4.129 mg/L)was significantly higher than that in the estuary area(averaged 0.858 mg/L).Two distinct stages of POC transport from land to sea in the Sundarbans area were identified. The first stage occurred in the river section, where POC distribution was mainly controlled by the dynamic process of runoff and the organic carbon was mainly terrestrial source. The second stage occurred during estuarine mixing, where the POC distribution was mainly controlled by the mixing process of seawater and freshwater. The source of POC was predominantly marine and exhibiting vertical differences. The surface and middle layers were primarily influenced by marine sources, while the bottom layer was jointly controlled by terrestrial and marine sources of organic carbon. These findings are of great significance for understanding the carbon cycle in such a large mangrove ecosystem like the Sundarbans mangrove.

文摘We study the behaviors of thermalization in Fermi–Pasta–Ulam–Tsingou(FPUT) system with small number of particles using periodic boundary conditions. Redistribution of mode energies happens through the resonances of high frequency modes.

文摘The effect of the number of defect particles on the structure and dispersion relations of a two-dimensional(2D) dust lattice is studied by molecular dynamics(MD) simulation. The appropriate number of defect particles can weaken the anisotropy property of the lattice.

文摘Using a diffusion model we investigate deformation effects on the sensitivity of different light particles to nuclear dissipation for a rather neutron-deficlent ^178Pb system. Galculations show that deformation significantly increases the sensitivity of neutron emission to dissipation strength, and that this effect becomes stronger with increasing deformation.

文摘Infectious bursal disease(IBD)causes considerable economic losses in the commercial poultry industry worldwide. The principal way to control IBD virus(IBDV),the causative agent of IBD,is still through vaccination programs.Virus-like particles(VLPs)are recognised as a safe and potent recombinant vaccine platform. This research work explores the characterisation and separation of infectious bursal disease virus-like particles(IBD-VLPs)from crude feedstock.Various characteristics were studied with highperformance size-exclusion chromatography(HP-SEC),sodium dodecyl sulphate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis(SDS-PAGE)and transmission electron microscopy(TEM)analyses.Subsequently, the separation of IBD-VLPs using polyethylene glycol(PEG)/sodium citrate-based aqueous two-phase systems(ATPSs)was conducted and optimised. Moreover,a scale-up study of the best ATPS constituted of 15%PEG 6000,11%sodium citrate and 10%crude feedstock was performed to compare the separation performance of IBD-VLPs with and without centrifugation-assisted.The results indicated that the optimised ATPS with centrifugation-assisted for both 5 g and 50 g systems showed good recovery of IBDVLPs of>97%in the interphase between the PEG-rich top and salt-rich bottom phases. These optimised systems also showed high removal efficiencies of impurities of>95%.The results demonstrated that aqueous two-phase extraction could be a promising technology for efficient VLPs separation.
文摘When the microscopic particles was depicted by linear Schrodinger equation, we find that the particles have only a wave feature, thus, a series of difficulties and intense disputations occur in quantum mechanics. From this investigation we can not only solve difficulties and problems disputed for about a century by plenty of scientists in quantum mechanics but also promote the development of physics and enhance the knowledge and recognition levels to the essences of microscopic matter.

文摘Polybrominated biphenyl ethers(PBDEs)and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)are commonly detected contaminants at e-waste recycling sites.Against the conventional wisdom that PBDEs and PAHs are highly immobile and persist primarily in shallowsurface soils, increasing evidence shows that these compounds can leach into the groundwater.Herein,we compare the leachabilities of PBDEs vs.PAHs from contaminated soils collected at an e-waste recycling site in Tianjin,China.Considerable amounts of BDE-209(0.3–2 ng/L)and phenanthrene(42–106 ng/L),the most abundant PBDE and PAH at the site, are detected in the effluents of columns packed with contaminated soils, with the specific concentrations varying with hydrodynamic and solution chemistry conditions.Interestingly, the leaching potential of BDE-209 appears to be closely related to the release of colloidal mineral particles, whereas the leachability of phenanthrene correlates well with the concentration of dissolved organic carbon in the effluent, but showing essentially no correlation with the concentration of mineral particles. The surprisingly different trends of the leachability observed between BDE-209 and phenanthrene is counterintuitive,as PBDEs and PAHs often co-exist at e-waste recycling sites(particularly at the sites wherein incineration is being practiced)and share many similarities in terms of physicochemical properties. One possible explanation is that due to its extremely low solubility,BDE-209 predominantly exists in free-phase(i.e.,as solid(nano)particles),whereas the more soluble phenanthrene is mainly sorbed to soil organic matter.Findings in this study underscore the need to better understand the mobility of highly hydrophobic organic contaminants at contaminated sites for improved risk management.
