With the rapid development of the Internet of Things and big data,integrated optical switches are gaining prominence for applications in on-chip optical computing,optical memories,and optical communications.Here,we propose a novel approach for on-chip optical switches by utilizing the nonlinear optical Kerr effect induced spontaneous symmetry breaking(SSB),which leads to two distinct states of counterpropagating light in ring resonators.This technique is based on our first experimental observation of on-chip symmetry breaking in a high-Q(9.4×10~6)silicon nitride resonator with a measured SSB threshold power of approximately 3.9 mW.We further explore the influence of varying pump powers and frequency detunings on the performance of SSB-induced optical switches.Our work provides insights into the development of new types of photonic data processing devices and provides an innovative approach for the future implementation of on-chip optical memories. 展开更多

We examine the temperature-dependent reflection shifts, microscopic morphology, and laser emission of polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals. The preparation parameters, including the concentration of photo-initiator and laser dye, are evaluated and their influence on reflection band is considered not to be ignorable. Inadequate ultraviolet(UV) curing time less than the required value to fully photo-polymerize the monomer can also influence the spectral position and shape of the reflection band but still favor possible band-edge lasing, whereas extending UV curing duration can weaken and eventually eliminate the laser emission. The behaviors are explained using the results derived from the mean field theory. 展开更多

The third-order optical nonlinearities of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) are investigated using the optical Kerr effect (OKE) and Z-scan techniques with femtosecond pulses. We are able to fit the OKE signal theoretically by convolving the autocorrelation of the incident pulse intensity profile with the impulse responses of the samples, illustrating the instantaneous nonlinear response of DMSO. We verify that the purely electronic cloud distortion causes the observed signal for DMSO. The Z-scan technique is used to estimate the third-order susceptibility of DMSO, which is about a quarter of that for CS2 and mainly comes from the nonlinear refraction with an intensity of less than 140 GW/cm^2. 展开更多

The Zn1-xMgxO thin films were deposited on sapphire substrates by reactive electron beam evaporation deposition (REBED). The X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurement demonstrates that these films undergo phase transiti... The Zn1-xMgxO thin films were deposited on sapphire substrates by reactive electron beam evaporation deposition (REBED). The X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurement demonstrates that these films undergo phase transition from hexagonal to cubic with increasing the Mg concentration. Absorption coefficients at 532 nm of the samples were obtained from the absorption spectra. Using optical Kerr effect, the thirdorder susceptibilities of the ternary films over a wide range of Mg concentrations were determined. The magnitude of X^(3) of the ternary Zn1-xMgxO films is order of 10^-11 esu at λ = 532 nm. The sample with phase mixture of both hexagonal and cubic structures shows the largest third-order susceptibility. The difference observed in the magnitude of X^(3) of Zn1-xMgxO films is attributed to the different microstructures of the ternary films, such as crystalline phase separation and crystal grains that enhance stimulated scattering. 展开更多

Numerical calculation of Kerr spectra for Co/Pt magnetic multilayered films

It is found that the calculated results are in good agreement with experimental ones for [Co (0.3 nm)/Pt (0.4 nm)]×43/glass (1.21 mm) and [Co (0.4 nm)/Pt (1.1 nm)]×53/glass (1 mm). In addition, for [Co (0.3 nm)/Pt (0.4 nm)]×43/glass (1.21 mm), it shows a maximum Kerr rotation at N=10. For [Co (0.4 nm)/Pt (1.1 nm)]×53/glass (1 mm), the calculated Kerr rotation as a function of incident angle reveals maximum when the incident angle is 89°. 展开更多
