Lodging is a major constraint limiting oil flax production efficiency in northern China.Crop lodging susceptibility is closely related to stem lignin content, and the regulatory mechanisms by which nitrogen and potassium fertilization interactively influence lignin biosynthesis in oil flax stems require further investigation. Therefore, this study aimed to enhance lodging resistance and increase grain yield in oil flax.We examined the interactive effects of different nitrogen (75,150,and 225 kg N ha^(–1)) and potassium (60 and 90 kg K_(2)O ha^(–1)) fertilizer rates on lignin metabolism, lodging resistance, and grain yield during the 2022 and 2023 growing seasons. Results indicated that nitrogen and potassium fertilizer levels and their interactions promoted lignin accumulation, improved lodging resistance, and increased grain yield.Compared to the control (CK),the75–150 kg N ha^(–1) combined with 60 kg K_(2)O ha^(–1) treatments significantly enhanced the activities of key lignin-synthesizing enzymes (tyrosine ammonia-lyase (TAL),phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL),cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD),and peroxidase (POD)) and upregulated the expression of 4CL1 and F5H3 genes, leading to a 29.63–43.30%increase in lignin content, improved stem bending strength and lodging resistance index, and a 23.27–32.34%increase in grain yield.Correlation analysis revealed that nitrogen and potassium fertilizers positively regulated enzyme activities and gene expression related to lignin biosynthesis, thereby facilitating lignin accumulation and enhancing stem mechanical strength and lodging resistance.Positive correlations were observed among lignin-related enzyme activities, gene expression, lodging resistance traits, and grain yield. In summary, the application of 75–150 kg N ha^(–1) in conjunction with 60 kg K_(2)O ha^(–1)promoted lignin biosynthesis and accumulation, enhanced lodging resistance, and increased grain yield in oil flax grown in the dryland farming region of central Gansu,China.Furthermore, this treatment provides a technical basis for cultivating stress-tolerant and high-yield oil flax in arid regions. 展开更多

To examine the impact of anthropogenic land reconstruction, particularly the consolidation of small terraces into larger fields,on soil organic carbon(SOC),total nitrogen(TN)dynamics, rice yield, and its components, soil and plant samples were collected from seven newly reconstructed fields in Japanese Andosols in Tochigi,Japan.Samples were obtained from both the former low-and high-elevation sides within each field plot.During harvest season, nine rice plants were randomly selected from each plot(0.675 m^(2),comprising 3 rows and 3 hills per row),collected from a 3-m stretch along both the east(former low side)and west(former high side)ridges.Soil cores were collected from identical plots at two depths(0–15 and 15–30 cm)and combined into one composite sample per layer.Rice plant samples were air-dried for two weeks until reaching constant moisture content, after which stems and ears were separated and weighed to determine biomass, yield, yield components, and nitrogen uptake. This indicated that land reconstruction significantly affected rice yield and its components between the two sides of all field plots.SOC,TN,and their decomposition following land reconstruction showed notable changes, especially in the 15–30 cm subsurface soil layer.Additionally, grain weight demonstrated significant correlation with SOC,TN,and carbon decomposition in both the 0–15 and 15–30 cm layers, indicating that soil fertility to a depth of 30 cm was crucial for rice productivity after land reconstruction. 展开更多

Organic material combined with inorganic fertilizer has been shown to greatly improve crop yield and maintain soil fertility globally. However, it remains unclear if crop yield and soil fertility can be sustained in the long term under the combined application of organic and inorganic fertilizers. Three long-term field trials were conducted to investigate the effects of organic amendments on the grain sustainable yield index(SYI), soil fertility index(SFI)and nutrient balance in maize–wheat cropping systems of central and southern China during 1991–2019. Five treatments were included in the trials: 1) no fertilization(control);2) balanced mineral fertilization(NPK);3) NPK plus manure(NPKM);4) high dose of NPK plus manure(1.5NPKM);and 5) NPK plus crop straw(NPKS). Over time, the grain yields of wheat and maize showed an increasing trend in all four fertilization treatments at the Yangling(YL) and Zhengzhou(ZZ) locations, while they declined at Qiyang(QY). The grain yield in the NPKM and 1.5NPKM treatments gradually exceeded that of the NPK and NPKS treatments at the QY site. The largest SYI was recorded in the NPKM treatment across the three sites, suggesting that inorganic fertilizer combined with manure can effectively improve crop yield sustainability. Higher SYI values were recorded at the YL and ZZ sites than at the QY site, possibly because the soil was more acid at QY. The key factors affecting grain yield were soil available phosphorus(AP) and available potassium(AK) at the YL and ZZ sites, and pH and AP at the QY site. All fertilization treatments resulted in soil N and P surpluses at the three sites, but soil K surpluses were recorded only at the QY site. The SFI was greater in the 1.5NPKM, NPKM and NPKS treatments than in the NPK treatment by 13.3–40.0 and 16.4–63.6% at the YL and ZZ sites, respectively, and was significantly higher in the NPKM and 1.5NPKM treatments than in the NPK and NPKS treatments at the QY site. A significant, positive linear relationship was found between SFI and crop yield, and SYI and nutrient balance, indicating that grain yield and its sustainability significantly increased with increasing soil fertility. The apparent N, P and K balances positively affected SFI.This study suggests that the appropriate amount of manure mixed with mineral NPK fertilizer is beneficial to the development of sustainable agriculture, which effectively increases the crop yield and yield sustainability by improving soil fertility. 展开更多

Several initiatives have been made in Egypt to increase the overall production of oil crops, especially sunflower and to close the gap between edible oil production and demand.Field experiments were conducted during the main seasons of 2022 and 2023 at the agricultural research station of National Research Centre,Nubaria,Egypt to investigate the effects of potassium nitrate (0,20,40,60 kg K_(2)O fed^(-1))(fed=feddan=2.4 ha) and zinc sulfate(0,25,50,75 ppm Zn) on growth, oil yield, nutrients components and chemical composition of sunflower. Results indicated that application of potassium nitrate has a promoted effect on chlorophyll content, growth parameters(Head weight, head diameter and 100 seed weight),protein content, oil yield as well as nutrient content under all applied levels. The data also showed that the highest significant increase occurred with the soil application of 40kg fed^(-1)potassium nitrate combined with 75 ppm Zn foliar spray.Meanwhile, the lowest values were obtained at the control treatment. Therefore, the current study detected that potassium soil addition at 40 kg K_(2)O fed^(-1),besides foliar application with 75 ppm Zn are important to improve the growth,macro-micronutrient,seeds and oil productivity of sunflower crops.Oil yield and nutrient content exhibit a strong positive correlation, with a correlation coefficient of 0.903 for N,0.94 for P,0.962 for K and 0.966 for Zn.This indicates that a higher nutrient percentage is associated with higher oil content of sunflower.Study underscores the importance of comprehending the interplay between potassium and zinc treatments in sunflower plants to enhance growth, yield, and oil production effectively.Understanding these relationships can lead to optimized cultivation practices and improved outcomes in sunflower farming. 展开更多

Increasing the grain yield(GY) and water use efficiency(WUE) of winter wheat in the Huaibei Plain(HP), China are essential. However, the effects of micro-sprinkler irrigation and topsoil compaction after wheat seed sowing on the GY and WUE are unclear. Therefore, a two-year field experiment was conducted during the 2021–2023 winter wheat growing seasons with a total six treatments: rain-fed(RF), conventional irrigation(CI) and micro-sprinkler irrigation(MI), as well as topsoil compaction after seed sowing under these three irrigation methods(RFC, CIC, and MIC). The results in the two years indicated that MI significantly increased GY compared to CI and RF, by averages of 17.9 and 42.1%, respectively. The increase in GY of MI was due to its significant increases in the number of spikes, kernels per spike, and grain weight. The chlorophyll concentration in flag leaves of MI after the anthesis stage maintained higher levels than with CI and RF, and was the lowest in RF. This was due to the dramatically enhanced catalase and peroxidase activities and lower malondialdehyde content under MI. Compared with RF and CI, MI significantly promoted dry matter remobilization and production after anthesis, as well as its contribution to GY. In addition, MI significantly boosted root growth, and root activity during the grain-filling stage was remarkably enhanced compared to CI and RF. In 2021–2022, there was no significant difference in WUE between MI and RF, but the WUE of RF was significantly lower than that of MI in 2022–2023. However, the WUE in MI was significantly improved compared to CI, and it increased by averages of 15.1 and 17.6% for the two years. Topsoil compaction significantly increased GY and WUE under rain-fed conditions due to improved spike numbers and dry matter production. Overall, topsoil compaction is advisable for enhancing GY and WUE in rain-fed conditions, whereas micro-sprinkler irrigation can be adopted to simultaneously achieve high GY and WUE in the HP. 展开更多

The increase in soil temperature associated with climate change has introduced considerable challenges to crop production.Split nitrogen application(SN)represents a potential strategy for improving crop nitrogen use efficiency and enhancing crop stress resistance.Nevertheless, the precise interaction between soil warming(SW)and SN remains unclear. In order to ascertain the impact of SW on maize growth and whether SN can improve the tolerance of maize to SW,a two-year field experiment was conducted(2022-2023).The aim was to examine the influence of two SW ranges(MT,warming 1.40℃;HT,warming 2.75℃)and two nitrogen application methods(N1,one-time basal application of nitrogen fertilizer;N2,one third of base nitrogen fertilizer+two thirds of jointing stage supplemental nitrogen fertilizer)on maize root growth, photosynthetic characteristics, nitrogen use efficiency, and yield. The results demonstrated that SW impeded root growth and precipitated the premature aging of maize leaves following anthesis, particularly in the HT,which led to a notable reduction in maize yield. In comparison to N1,SN has been shown to increase root length density by 8.54%,root bleeding rate by 8.57%,and enhance root distribution ratio in the middle soil layers(20-60 cm).The interaction between SW and SN had a notable impact on maize growth and yield. The SN improved the absorption and utilization efficiency of nitrogen by promoting root development and downward canopy growth, thus improving the tolerance of maize to SW at the later stage of growth. In particular, the N2HT resulted in a 14.51%increase in the photosynthetic rate,a 18.58%increase in nitrogen absorption efficiency, and a 18.32%increase in maize yield compared with N1HT.It can be posited that the SN represents a viable nitrogen management measure with the potential to enhance maize tolerance to soil high-temperature stress. 展开更多

Brackish water(BW)irrigation may cause soil quality deterioration and thereby a decrease in crop yields. Here we examined the impacts of applying gasification filter cake(GFC),intercropping with Portulaca oleracea(PO),and their combination on soil quality, nutrient uptake by plants and tomato yields under BW irrigation. The treatments evaluated included(i)freshwater irrigation(Control),(ii)BW irrigation,(iii)GFC application under BW irrigation(BW+GFC),(iv)intercropping with PO under BW irrigation(BW+PO),and(v)the combined application of GFC and PO under BW irrigation(BW+PO+GFC).Overall, the use of BW for irrigation resulted in a decline in both soil quality(assessed by a soil quality index(SQI)integrating a wide range of key soil properties including salinity, nutrient availability and microbial activities)and crop yields.Nevertheless, when subjected to BW irrigation, the application of GFC successfully prevented soil salinity.Additionally, the intercropping of PO decreased the soil sodium adsorption ratio and improved the absorption of nutrients by plants. As a result, the BW+GFC+PO treatment generally showed higher tomato yield as compared to other BW-related treatments(i.e.BW,BW+GFC and BW+PO).Compared to BW,the BW+GFC+PO treatment had an average increase of 24.7% in the total fruit yield of four Cropping Seasons.Furthermore, the BW+GFC+PO treatment consistently exhibited the highest fruit quality index(FQI).Taken together, the combined application of GFC and PO is effective in promoting soil quality and crop yields under BW irrigation. 展开更多

The analysis of combining ability and heterosis is very important in enhancing the yield and oil quality of sunflowers under adverse conditions, and it reveals the potential of the parents and the mechanism of gene action. In this study,twenty-one hybrids were developed by crossing seven cytoplasmic male sterile(CMS)lines with three restorer lines and evaluated for agronomic and quality traits.Highly significant general combining ability(GCA)and specific combining ability(SCA)effects were observed, confirming the role of both additive and non-additive gene actions.Among the tested crosses,A-42×R-86,A-92×R-86,and A-92×R-114 exhibited the greatest heterotic advantage, with seed yields exceeding 340 kg ha^(−1) over the better parent, oil contents above 19%,and 100-seed weights greater than 27 g.The hybrid A-92×R-114 was particularly notable for its elevated oleic acid level and balanced fatty acid profile, making it a strong candidate for premium oilseed production. In contrast, hybrids like A-20×R-39 exhibited moderate heterosis and less quality superiority. The oleic-to-linoleic acid ratio,a key determinant of oil stability, was strongly controlled by genetic factors.Oil content was largely influenced by additive effects, whereas yield heterosis was predominantly governed by non-additive effects.Overall,A-42×R-86 and A-92×R-114 emerged as the most promising hybrids, combining yield benefits with improved oil quality, and offering practical guidance for parental selection in sunflower breeding programs. 展开更多

Biochar and animal manure application can improve crop yields in salt-affected soil.Previous studies have primarily applied biochar and animal manure either alone or at fixed ratios, while their combined effects with varying combination proportions are still unclear. To address this knowledge gap,we performed a 2-a experiment(2023-2024)in a salinized cotton field in Wensu County of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China with the following 6 treatments:control;application of biochar(10t/hm^(2))alone(BC100%);application of cow manure(10 t/hm^(2))alone(CM100%);application of 70%biochar(7 t/hm^(2))combined with 30%cow manure(3 t/hm^(2))(BC70%+CM30%);application of 50%biochar(5 t/hm^(2))combined with 50%cow manure(5 t/hm^(2))(BC50%+CM50%);and application of 30%biochar(3 t/hm^(2))combined with 70%cow manure(7 t/hm^(2))(BC30%+CM70%).By measuring soil pH,electrical conductivity, soil organic matter, available phosphorus, available potassium, and available nitrogen at 0-20 and 20-40 cm depths,as well as yield components and cotton yield in 2023 and 2024,this study revealed that soil nutrients in the 0-20 cm depth were more sensitive to the treatment.Among all the treatments,BC50%+CM50%treatment had the highest value of soil pH(9.63±0.07)but the lowest values of electrical conductivity(161.9±31.8μS/cm),soil organic matter(1.88±0.27 g/kg),and available potassium(42.72±8.25 mg/kg)in 2024.Moreover,the highest cotton yield(5336.63±467.72 kg/hm^(2))was also observed under BC50%+CM50%treatment in 2024,which was 1.9 times greater than that under the control treatment. In addition, cotton yield in 2023 was jointly determined by yield components(density and number of cotton bolls)and soil nutrients(available phosphorus and available potassium),but in 2024,cotton yield was only positively related to yield components(density, number of cotton bolls, and single boll weight).Overall, this study highlighted that in salt-affected soil, the combination of biochar and cow manure at a 1:1 ratio is recommended for increasing cotton yield and reducing soil salinity stress. 展开更多

The rapeseed,as the second oilseed crop in China,is an important source of edible oil.Reasonable planting density can improve rapeseed production efficiency, and indirectly increase farmers'the production enthusiasm of planting rapeseed. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of the study on effect of rapeseed yield to planting density, this article reviews the effect on planting density to yield in rapeseed, including the influences of the interaction between cultivation factors(variety, sowing period, and fertilization),the impact of plant density to lodging resistance and growth and development(biological characteristics, agronomic characteristics, yield traits, and quality tracts),and planting density and the relationship between light and planting density, are reviewed. The lodging resistance of oilseed rape and population yield of different rape varieties can be improved by choosing the appropriate sowing date and fertilizer application, and give full play to the rational utilization of resources and the maximization of benefits. The oilseed rape can make rational use of light and nutrients, which is conducive to dry matter accumulation and yield improvement, with proper planting density. This review will provide a theoretical basis and practical support for rapeseed planting, management, and mechanized production. 展开更多

Magnesium(Mg)defciency is becoming a limiting factor for citrus production in acid soils of subtropical and tropical zones. It is speculated that soil Mg leaching and thereby its imbalance may be a major cause of yield decline, yet Mg defciency in citrus receives little attention.A two-year feld experiment was therefore conducted to quantify soil Mg leaching in a typical citrus orchard in China fertilized with varying levels of Mg(Mg0,no Mg fertilizer;Mg45,45 kg MgO ha^(-1)yr^(-1);Mg90,90 kg MgO ha^(-1)yr^(-1);Mg180,180 kg MgO ha^(-1)yr^(-1)).Results showed that Mg application signifcantly increased citrus fruit yield by 4.1-16.4%compared with where MgO was not added. The average amount of soil Mg leaching was 65.7 kg ha^(-1)yr^(-1)where no Mg fertilizer was added, while it reached up to 91.3 kg Mg ha^(-1)yr^(-1)where MgO was added at the rate of 180 kg ha^(-1).Over the 4 treatments,Mg leaching accounted for 12.1-42.4%of the applied Mg fertilizer.Mg leaching and its removal through harvested fruits resulted in an orchard soil Mg balance of-69.9,-51.1,-27.4 and 10.9 kg ha^(-1)in the Mg0,Mg45,Mg90and Mg180,treatments,respectively.The pH values of leachate from the acid soil were alkaline and it contained higher amounts of calcium and potassium than that of Mg.Considering the high leaching of Mg from the acid soils of citrus orchards, applications of Mg fertilizer or Mg-fortifed soil conditioner are vital to sustain soil Mg balance, high fruit yield and fruit quality in citrus production systems in humid subtropical regions. 展开更多

Wheat-maize rotation is a widely used planting pattern in oasis-irrigated areas in Northwest China.Although this planting pattern has the advantage of breaking the barrier of continuous cropping to some extent,it also presents some problems, such as large evaporation and prominent soil degradation during the fallow period, which seriously restricts the improvement of crop yield.Planting green manure(GM)after wheat and returning it to the field can effectively improve soil physicochemical properties, regulate the photosynthetic characteristics of subsequent crops, and promote crop yield. However, the photosynthetic physiological mechanism of crop yield improvement under different green manure return methods(GMRM)remains unclear. Therefore,by exploring the relationships among soil moisture and temperature environment, maize root structure, photosynthetic characteristics, fluorescence characteristics and yield under different GMRM,this study aims to provide a theoretical basis for clarifying the photosynthetic physiological mechanism of GMRM to improve maize yield.A three-year field experiment was conducted at a research station in the Shiyang River Basin(Gansu,China).Five treatments were involved in this study:(i)conventional tillage without GM(CT),(ii)no-tillage with total GM mulching(NTG),(iii)no-tillage with removal of aboveground GM(NT),(iv)tillage with total GM incorporation(TG),and(v)tillage with only root incorporation(T).Results showed that the NTG and TG significantly increased soil water content(SWC)in 0-110 cm soil layer, soil temperature(ST)of maize seedlings(V3)to jointing stage(V6),canopy cover(CC),leaf stay-greenness(SG),root length(RL),net photosynthetic rate(P_(n)),transpiration rate(Tr),actual photochemical efficiency of PSII(ΦPSII),maize biomass, and grain yield(GY)compared with CT.In addition,NTG and TG significantly decreased the ST of maize from the big trumpet stage(V12)to the blister stage(R2),and the dissipation of excess energy(NPQ),compared with CT.GM’s return to the field could improve root structure and canopy coverage of maize mainly by improving soil water content. The optimization of maize root structure and canopy coverage increased the maize chlorophyll content(SPAD)value and promoted P_(n).The increase in P_(n) inhibits the increase in NPQ,thus promoting the activation of ΦPSII.The increase in ΦPSII promoted the increase in maize biomass, ultimately leading to an increase in maize GY. 展开更多

A f... Improving cotton fiber quality can increase the economic income of cotton farmers, but achieving high fiber quality without decreasing cotton fiber yield remains a major challenge in saline-alkaline cotton fields. A field experiment was conducted in 2020 and 2021 on saline-alkaline soil with cotton under drip irrigation to examine how amount and timing of leaching affected soils salinity, cotton fiber yield and quality. There were five leaching amounts(CK: 0 mm, W1: 75 mm, W2: 150 mm, W3: 225 mm and W4: 300 mm) and three leaching timings(T1: once at the seedling stage, T2: twice at the seedling and budding stages, and T3: thrice at the seedling, budding and pollen-setting stages). Soil salinity, soil nitrate nitrogen(NO_(3)-N), cotton nitrogen(N) uptake, irrigation water productivity(IWP), cotton fiber yield, fiber length, fiber uniformity, fiber strength, fiber elongation, micronaire and fiber quality index(FQI) were investigated. The results indicated that soil salinity and NO_(3)-N reduced with increasing leaching amount. The N uptake of cotton bolls was greater than in cotton leaves, stems and roots, and total N accumulation increased with increasing leaching amount. The optimal cotton fiber yield and IWP occurred in treatment W3T2, and were 3,199 and 2,771 kg ha^(-1), and 0.5482 and 0.4912 kg m-3in 2020 and 2021, respectively. Fiber length, strength, elongation, and uniformity increased with increasing leaching amount, while there was a negative relationship between fiber micronaire and leaching amount. Soil salinity, NO_(3)-N and fiber micronaire were negatively correlated with fiber quality(i.e., length, strength, elongation and uniformity) and yield, nitrogen uptake of various organs(i.e., root, stems and leaves) and whole plant nitrogen uptake. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that fiber elongation was most sensitive to soil salinity. The method of Entropy–Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution(EM–TOPSIS) indicated that leaching of 300 mm of water applied equally at the seedling and budding periods was the optimal treatment to maintain soil salinity and nutrient levels and achieve high cotton fiber yield and quality. In conclusion, the optimal level of leaching treatment decreased soil salinity and improved nitrogen uptake and was beneficial to achieve high fiber yield and quality. Our results will be significant for guiding drip irrigation practice of leaching on saline-alkaline soils for sustainable cotton fiber production. 展开更多

Cotton,as one of important economic crops,is widely planted in the saline-alkaline soil of southern Xinjiang,China. Moreover,in order to control the saline-alkaline content for seed germination and seedlings survive of cotton, farmers always adopt salt leaching during winter and spring seasons. However, excessive amount of salt leaching might result in the waste of water resources and unsuitable irrigation seasons might further increase soil salinization. In this study,a field experiment was conducted in the saline-alkaline soil in 2020 and 2021 to determine the effects of leaching amount and period on water-salinity dynamics and cotton yield.Five leaching amounts(0.0(W0),75.0(W1),150.0(W2),225.0(W3),and 300.0(W4)mm)and three leaching periods(seedling stage(P1),seedling and squaring stages(P2),and seedling, squaring, flowering, and boll setting stages(P3))were used.In addition,a control treatment(CK)with a leaching amount of 300.0 mm in spring was performed. The soil water-salt dynamics, cotton growth, seed cotton yield, water productivity(WP),and irrigation water productivity(WPI)were analyzed. Results showed that leaching significantly decreased soil electrical conductivity(EC),and W3P2 treatment reduced EC by 11.79%in the 0-100 cm soil depth compared with CK.Plant height, stem diameter, leaf area index, and yield under W3 and W4 treatments were greater than those under W1 and W2 treatments.Compared with W3P1 and W3P3 treatments, seed cotton yield under W3P2 treatment significantly enhanced and reached 6621 kg/hm^(2)in 2020 and 5340 kg/hm^(2)in 2021.Meanwhile,WP and WPI under W3P2 treatment were significantly higher than those under other leaching treatments. In conclusion, the treatment of 225.0 mm leaching amount and seedling and squaring stages-based leaching period was beneficial for the salt control, efficient water utilization, and yield improvement of cotton in southern Xinjiang,China. 展开更多

[Objectives]Farmland ginseng cultivation,as a sustainable alternative to traditional forest-clearing ginseng planting, requires systematic evaluation of soil optimization strategies. This study aimed to quantify the linkage between soil improvement outcomes and ginseng(Panax ginseng)yield across five regions in Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture.[Methods]Soil improvement trials were conducted using farmland soils, with forest soils as the baseline.Soil nutrient contents were measured via soil agrochemical analysis method using a continuous flow analyzer.Statistical approaches, including significance tests, correlation analysis, and regression analysis, were applied to identify key factors influencing yield.[Results]Ginseng yield exhibited a significant positive correlation with organic matter content and available phosphorus, but a negative correlation with electrical conductivity, ammonium nitrogen, and available potassium.Wangqing and Liucai regions achieved post-improvement yields equivalent to 94%and 88%of forest soil yields, respectively, demonstrating the highest soil similarity to forest ecosystems.[Conclusions]Region-specific soil improvement protocols in Wangqing and Liucai show high replicability and efficacy. These strategies can serve as benchmarks for sustainable farmland ginseng cultivation, minimizing ecological disruption while maintaining productivity. 展开更多

[Objectives]This study was conducted to investigate the effects of biochar-based fertilizer on high yield and quality of green pepper(Zanthoxylum armatum var.novemfolius)and soil nutrient status.[Methods]With green pepper and pepper field soil as the research subjects, four treatments were set up,namely, conventional fertilization(T_(1)),conventional fertilization+biochar(T_(2)),biochar-based fertilizer 1(T_(3)),and biochar-based fertilizer 2(T_(4)).[Results]The application of biochar-based fertilizer increased green pepper yield by 9.37%-51.12%,with the order of increase being T_(4)>T_(3)>T_(2)>T_(1).In terms of soil nutrients,biochar-based fertilizer raised soil pH by 6.67%-53.33%,with the order of increase being T_(3)>T_(4)>T_(2)>T_(1).The initially strongly acidic soil gradually shifted to weakly acidic and approached neutral, indicating significantly improved soil acidity. The application of biochar-based fertilizer increased the contents of soil organic matter, available nitrogen, available phosphorus, available potassium, available copper, available zinc, available iron, and available manganese. It significantly enhanced green pepper yield, improved soil acidity, and elevated soil nutrient levels.Considering yield, nutrient uptake, and soil nutrient content,biochar-based fertilizer 2(T_(4))was identified as the optimal treatment.[Conclusions]This study provides a theoretical basis for improving green pepper yield and soil amendment. 展开更多

Soybean is an important source of oil, protein, and feed. However, its yield is far below that of major cereal crops. The green revolution increased the yield of cereal crops partially through high-density planting of lodging-resistant semi-dwarf varieties, but required more nitrogen fertilizers, posing an environmental threat.Genes that can improve nitrogen use efficiency need to be integrated into semi-dwarf varieties to avoid the overuse of fertilizers without the loss of dwarfism.Unlike cereal crops, soybean can assimilate atmospheric nitrogen through symbiotic bacteria. Here,we created new alleles of Gm GID1-2(Glycine max GIBBERELLIN INSENSITIVE DWARF 1-2)using clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats(CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated nuclease 9(Cas9)editing,which improved soybean architecture, yield, seed oil content, and nitrogen fixation,by regulation of important pathways and known genes related to branching, lipid metabolism, and nodule symbiosis.Gm GID1-2 knockout reduced plant height, and increased stem diameter and strength, number of branches, nodes on the primary stem, pods, and seeds per plant, leading to an increase in seed weight per plant and yield in soybean. The nodule number, nodule weight, nitrogenase activity, and nitrogen content were also improved in Gm GID1-2knockout soybean lines, which is novel compared with the semi-dwarf genes in cereal crops. No loss-of-function allele for Gm GID1-2 was identified in soybean germplasm and the edited Gm GID1-2s are superior to the natural alleles, suggesting the Gm GID1-2 knockout mutants generated in this study are valuable genetic resources to further improve soybean yield and seed oil content in future breeding programs. This study illustrates the pleiotropic functions of the GID1 knockout alleles with positive effects on plant architecture, yield, and nitrogen fixation in soybean, which provides a promising strategy toward sustainable agriculture. 展开更多

Ridge-furrow film mulching has been widely used as a water-saving and yield-increasing planting pattern in arid and semiarid regions.Planting density is also a vitally important factor influencing crop yield, and the optimal planting density will vary in different environments(such as ridge-furrow film mulching). How the combination of film mulching and planting density will affect the growth, physiology, yield, and water and radiation use efficiencies of winter oilseed rape is not clear yet. Therefore,a three-year field experiment was conducted from 2017 to 2020 to explore the responses of leaf chlorophyll(Chl)content, net photosynthetic rate(P_(n)),leaf area index(LAI),aboveground dry matter(ADM),root growth and distribution, yield, evapotranspiration(ET),water use efficiency(WUE),and radiation use efficiency(RUE)of winter oilseed rape to different film mulching patterns(F,ridge-furrow planting with plastic film mulching over the ridges;N,flat planting without mulching)and planting densities(LD,100,000 plants ha^(-1);MD,150,000 plants ha^(-1);HD,200,000 plants ha^(-1)).The results showed that the F treatments led to significantly greater leaf Chl contents,P_(n),LAI,and ADM,and a stronger root system than treatments without film mulching throughout the whole winter rapeseed growing seasons.Winter oilseed rape in the MD treatments had better physiological(leaf Chl contents and P_(n))and growth(LAI,ADM,taproot, and lateral root)conditions than in LD and HD at the late growth period after stem-elongation.Grain yield in FMD was the greatest, and it was significantly greater by 34.8-46.0%,6.7-9.6%,87.8-108.3%,38.7-50.3%,and 50.2-61.8%compared to those of FLD,FHD,NLD,NMD,and NHD,respectively.Furthermore, the ET in FMD was equivalent to FLD and FHD,but was markedly lower by 12.2-18.4%,14.5-20.3%,and 14.6-20.4%than in NLD,NMD,and NHD.Finally, the WUE and RUE in FMD were significantly improved by 88.5-94.0%and 29.0-41.8%compared to NHD(the local conventional planting pattern and planting density for winter rapeseed). In summary,FMD is a favorable cultivation management strategy to save water, increase yield and improve resource utilization efficiencies in winter oilseed rape in Northwest China. 展开更多

In this study, thyme essential oil(TEO)nanoemulsion(tPTNs)was constructed with transglutaminase(TGase)-modified potato protein, and its antibacterial activity and mechanism of action were evaluated and explored. Results indicated that tPTNs exhibited great antibacterial activity against both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, with minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC)and minimum bactericidal concentration(MBC)of 2.5 and 5.0 mg/mL,respectively.Also,the antibacterial effects of tPTNs were concentration-dependent.We observed a significant decrease in the absolute value of the zeta potential, and significant increases in particle size, cell membrane hydrophobicity, conductivity, the release of metal ions, and the leakage of nucleic acid as the concentration of tPTNs increased from 0 mg/mL to MBC.Furthermore, sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis(SDS-PAGE)demonstrated that protein synthesis was inhibited or even disrupted.Analysis by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry(LC-MS)indicated that treatment with tPTNs caused significant changes in bacterial metabolites,1117 and 692 differential metabolites being found for S.aureus and E.coli,respectively.The differential metabolites were involved in nucleotide metabolism, amino acid metabolism, tricarboxylic acid cycle and other metabolic pathways. These findings provide valuable insights for the application of thyme essential oil as an efficient antibacterial agent and for the understanding of its mechanism of action. 展开更多
