The uplift resistance of the soil overlying shield tunnels significantly impacts their anti-floating stability. However, research on uplift resistance concerning special-shaped shield tunnels is limited. This study combines numerical simulation with machine learning techniques to explore this issue. It presents a summary of special-shaped tunnel geometries and introduces a shape coefficient.Through the finite element software,Plaxis3D,the study simulates six key parameters—shape coefficient, burial depth ratio, tunnel’s longest horizontal length, internal friction angle, cohesion, and soil submerged bulk density—that impact uplift resistance across different conditions.Employing XGBoost and ANN methods, the feature importance of each parameter was analyzed based on the numerical simulation results. The findings demonstrate that a tunnel shape more closely resembling a circle leads to reduced uplift resistance in the overlying soil, whereas other parameters exhibit the contrary effects.Furthermore, the study reveals a diminishing trend in the feature importance of buried depth ratio, internal friction angle, tunnel longest horizontal length, cohesion, soil submerged bulk density, and shape coefficient in influencing uplift resistance. 展开更多

Slopes are likely to fail in areas with frequent rainfall and earthquakes. The deformation characteristics of unsaturated slopes subjected to post-rainfall earthquakes are investigated using centrifuge model tests and finite element analyses.Three tests of the slope deformation under earthquake and post-rainfall earthquakes are first studied using image analysis techniques. Then, based on an elastoplastic constitutive model, numerical simulations are carried out using the finite element method and compared with the centrifuge test results. Finally,a parametric study is performed to clarify the effects of antecedent rainfall on earthquake-induced slope deformation. The results show that slope deformation caused by post-rainfall earthquakes differs from that caused by earthquakes without antecedent rainfall. The seepage flow and soil strength of the slope are affected by previous rainfall conditions, such as intensity and duration, which directly influence the slope deformation caused by the subsequent earthquake.Soil displacement and strain become greater and the slip surface is more noticeable during the post-rainfall earthquake of higher intensity. In addition, the time interval between the rainfall and the earthquake has a considerable impact on the detailed characteristics of the slope deformation, and the significant deformation occurs at the time of lowest soil strength when seepage flow reaches the lower part of the slope. Moreover, the repeated intermittent rainfall greatly affects the subsequent earthquake-induced slope deformation, the main characteristics of which are closely related to the changes in saturation and strength of the slope. However, with the prolonged time gap between each round of rainfall, the earthquake-induced slope deformation becomes insignificant. 展开更多

To effectively minimize the electromagnetic field response in the total field solution, we propose a numerical modeling method for the two-dimensional (2D) time- domain transient electromagnetic secondary field of the line source based on the DuFort- Frankel finite-difference method. In the proposed method, we included the treatment of the earth-air boundary conductivity, calculated the normalized partial derivative of the induced electromotive force (Emf), and determined the forward time step. By extending upward the earth-air interface to the air grid nodes and the zero-value boundary conditions, not only we have a method that is more efficient but also simpler than the total field solution. We computed and analyzed the homogeneous half-space model and the fiat layered model with high precision--the maximum relative error is less than 0.01% between our method and the analytical method--and the solution speed is roughly three times faster than the total-field solution. Lastly, we used the model of a thin body embedded in a homogeneous half-space at different delay times to depict the downward and upward spreading characteristics of the induced eddy current, and the physical interaction processes between the electromagnetic field and the underground low-resistivity body. 展开更多

A three-dimensional numerical model of laser-arc hybrid plasma for aluminum alloy fillet joints is developed in this study. This mod-el accounts for the geometric complexity of fillet joints, the physical properties of shielding gases with varying He-Ar ratios, and the coupling between arc plasma and laser-induced metal plume. The accuracy of the model is validated using a high-speed camera. The effects of varying He contents in the shielding gas on both the temperature and flow velocity of hybrid plasma,as well as the distribu-tion of laser-induced metal vapor mass, were investigated separately. The maximum temperature and size of arc plasma decrease as the He volume ratio increases, the arc distribution becomes more concentrated, and its flow velocity initially decreases and then sharply increases. At high helium content, both the flow velocity of hybrid plasma and metal vapor are high, the metal vapor is con-centrated on the right side of keyhole, and its flow appears chaotic. The flow state of arc plasma is most stable when the shielding gas consists of 50%He+50%Ar. 展开更多

Rock is geometrically and mechanically multiscale in nature, and the traditional phenomenological laws at the macroscale cannot render a quantitative relationship between microscopic damage of rocks and overall rock structural degradation. This may lead to problems in the evaluation of rock structure stability and safe life.Multiscale numerical modeling is regarded as an effective way to gain insight into factors affecting rock properties from a cross-scale view. This study compiles the history of theoretical developments and numerical techniques related to rock multiscale issues according to different modeling architectures, that is,the homogenization theory, the hierarchical approach, and the concurrent approach. For these approaches, their benefits, drawbacks, and application scope are underlined.Despite the considerable attempts that have been made, some key issues still result in multiple challenges. Therefore, this study points out the perspectives of rock multiscale issues so as to provide a research direction for the future. The review results show that,in addition to numerical techniques, for example,high-performance computing, more attention should be paid to the development of an advanced constitutive model with consideration of fine geometrical descriptions of rock to facilitate solutions to multiscale problems in rock mechanics and rock engineering. 展开更多

To ensure the operational safety of railways in the landslide-prone areas of mountainous regions,a large-scale model test and numerical simulation were conducted to study the bending moment distribution, internal force distribution, deformation development, and crack propagation characteristics of a framed anti-sliding structure(FAS)under landslide thrust up to the point of failure. Results show that the maximum bending moment and its increase rate in the fore pile are greater than those in the rear pile, with the maximum bending moment of the fore pile approximately 1.1 times that of the rear pile. When the FAS fails, the displacement at the top of the fore pile is significantly greater, about 1.27 times that of the rear pile in the experiment.Major cracks develop at locations corresponding to the peak bending moments.Small transverse cracks initially appear on the upper surface at the intersection between the primary beam and rear pile and then spread to the side of the structure. At the failure stage, major cracks are observed at the pil-beam intersections and near the anchor points.Strengthening flexural stiffness at intersections where major cracks occur can improve the overall thrust-deformation coordination of the FAS,thereby maximizing its performance. 展开更多

A new three-dimensional multiphase numerical model was built. The volume of fluid and k-ε turbulence models were used to investigate the hot metal ladle pouring process.During the pouring process, issues such as iron splashing, overflow, and significant heat loss are prevalent. To realize efficient and stable pouring, the effects of ladle tilting velocity, flow rate, and converter tilting angle on the pouring process were examined. The model was verified by comparing the actual pouring time with the numerical results. It is shown that there is a nonlinear relationship between pouring velocity and hot metal flow rate at the ladle mouth. As the mass flow increased and the converter tilting angle decreased, the impact point of the hot metal into the converter pool shifted from the side wall to the bottom, and the impact force increased accordingly. The pouring velocity curve was optimized by the volume difference of the ladle at different angles, and an empirical formula was derived. After the optimization of pouring speed, the flow rate was stabilized between 4000 and 6000 kg/s,and the pouring time was reduced by approximately 30 s.After applying this model in actual production, the hot metal temperature inside the converter increased by approximately 5℃statistically.This model is potential to enhance the production efficiency, stability, and safety of the pouring process between open containers. 展开更多

In deep coal mining, surrounding rock is subjected to both high in-situ stress and intense mining disturbances, leading to significant time-dependent behavior.Accurately capturing this behavior is essential for predicting long-term roadway stability, necessitating the development of a reliable constitutive creep model and numerical simulation approach. In this study, creep experiments were conducted on pre-damaged rock with varying initial damage levels to investigate the time-dependent mechanical properties.Based on the experimental results,an accelerated-creep criterion was proposed, and an elastic-viscoplastic creep damage model(EVPCD)was established that simultaneously considers the effects of time-dependent damage and instantaneous damage caused by stress disturbances on rock creep behavior.Subsequently, the effectiveness of the proposed creep model was verified using experimental data, and the secondary development of the EVPCD model was completed based on the FLAC3D platform.Following this,a long-term stability analysis method of deep surrounding rock that accounts for excavation-and mining-induced disturbances was proposed.Using the main roadway of Xutuan Coal Mine as a case study, numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the time-dependent deformation and failure characteristics of the surrounding rock following excavation and mining disturbance.Combined with on-site monitoring of the surrounding rock damage areas, the results indicate that the EVPCD outperforms the CVISC and Nishihara models in predicting the time-dependent behavior of deep surrounding rock. 展开更多

Automation and intelligence have become the primary trends in the design of investment casting processes. However, the design of gating and riser systems still lacks precise quantitative evaluation criteria.Numerical simulation plays a significant role in quantitatively evaluating current processes and making targeted improvements, but its limitations lie in the inability to dynamically reflect the formation outcomes of castings under varying process conditions, making real-time adjustments to gating and riser designs challenging. In this study,an automated design model for gating and riser systems based on integrated parametric 3D modeling-simulation framework is proposed, which enhances the flexibility and usability of evaluating the casting process by simulation.Firstly, geometric feature extraction technology is employed to obtain the geometric information of the target casting.Based on this information,an automated design framework for gating and riser systems is established, incorporating multiple structural parameters for real-time process control.Subsequently, the simulation results for various structural parameters are analyzed, and the influence of these parameters on casting formation is thoroughly investigated. Finally, the optimal design scheme is generated and validated through experimental verification.Simulation analysis and experimental results show that using a larger gate neck(24 mm in side length) and external risers promotes a more uniform temperature distribution and a more stable flow state, effectively eliminating shrinkage cavities and enhancing process yield by 15%. 展开更多

Ensuring the stability of the surrounding rock mass is of great importance during the construction of a large underground powerhouse. The presence of unfavorable structural planes within the rock mass, such as faults, can lead to substantial deformation and subsequent collapse.A series of in situ experiments and discrete element numerical simulations have been conducted to gain insight into the progressive failure behavior and deformation response of rocks in relation to controlled collapse scenarios involving gently inclined faults.First, the unloading damage evolution process of the surrounding rock mass is characterized by microscopic analysis using microseismic(MS)data.Second, the moment tensor inversion method is used to elucidate the temporal distribution of MS event fracture types in the surrounding rock mass.During the development stage of the collapse, numerous tensile fracture events occur, while a few shear fractures corresponding to structural plane dislocation precede their occurrence. The use of the digital panoramic borehole camera, acoustic wave test, and numerical simulation revealed that gently inclined faults and deep cracks at a certain depth from the cavern periphery are the primary factors contributing to rock collapse. These results provide a valuable case study that can help anticipate and mitigate fault-slip collapse incidents while providing practical insights for underground cave excavation. 展开更多

Wire arc additive manufacturing(WAAM)has emerged as a promising approach for fabricating large-scale components. However, conventional WAAM still faces challenges in optimizing microstructural evolution, minimizing additive-induced defects, and alleviating residual stress and deformation, all of which are critical for enhancing the mechanical performance of the manufactured parts.Integrating interlayer friction stir processing(FSP)into WAAM significantly enhances the quality of deposited materials. However, numerical simulation research focusing on elucidating the associated thermomechanical coupling mechanisms remains insufficient.A comprehensive numerical model was developed to simulate the thermomechanical coupling behavior in friction stir-assisted WAAM.The influence of post-deposition FSP on the coupled thermomechanical response of the WAAM process was analyzed quantitatively. Moreover, the residual stress distribution and deformation behavior under both single-layer and multilayer deposition conditions were investigated.Thermal analysis of different deposition layers in WAAM and friction stir-assisted WAAM was conducted. Results show that subsequent layer deposition induces partial remelting of the previously solidified layer, whereas FSP does not cause such remelting.Furthermore, thermal stress and deformation analysis confirm that interlayer FSP effectively mitigates residual stresses and distortion in WAAM components, thereby improving their structural integrity and mechanical properties. 展开更多

Structure-type rockbursts frequently occur in deep tunnels, with structural planes and stress conditions being critical factors in their formation. In this study,we utilized specially developed analogous materials that exhibit the high brittleness and strength characteristics of deep hard rock to construct physical models representing different types of structural planes, including composite,exposed,non-exposed,and throughgoing structural planes.Physical simulation experiments were conducted on structuretype rockbursts in deep horseshoe-shaped tunnels, focusing on strain differentiation characteristics, critical triggering conditions, critical crack opening displacement, the incubation process, the reduction effects of structural planes on failure intensity, and formation mechanisms. These experiments were complemented by acoustic and optical monitoring,as well as discrete element numerical simulations,to provide a comprehensive analysis. The results revealed that the most significant strain heterogeneity in the surrounding rock occurs at the tip of the structural plane along the tunnel's minimum principal stress direction, driven by the combined effects of tensile and shear forces. We quantitatively determined the critical stress and strain conditions for structure-type rockbursts and evaluated the intensity of rockbursts induced by different structural planes using critical crack opening displacement(COD)values, the uniformity coefficient, and the curvature coefficient.Analysis of acoustic emission events, including frequency, amplitude, and b-value,indicated that the macro-fracture process is governed by both the principal stress differential and the characteristics of the structural plane.Furthermore, using the bearing capacity reduction coefficient,we found that exposed structural planes have the most significant weakening effect on rock mass strength, followed by non-exposed and throughgoing structural planes. The analysis of average frequency(AF)and rise angle(RA)parameters revealed a close correlation between the failure modes of structure-type rockbursts, the rock mass structure, and the stress levels. These findings provide critical theoretical support for the prediction and prevention of structure-type rockburst disasters. 展开更多

The increasing occurrence of corrosion-related damage in steel pipelines has led to the growing use of composite-based repair techniques as an efficient alternative to traditional replacement methods.Computer modeling and structural analysis were performed for the repair reinforcement of a steel pipeline with a composite bandage.A preliminary analysis of possible contact interaction schemes was implemented based on the theory of cylindrical shells, taking into account transverse shear deformations. The finite element method was used for a detailed study of the stress state of the composite bandage and the reinforced section of the pipeline. The limit state of the reinforced section was assessed based on the von Mises criterion for steel and the Tsai-Wu criterion for composites. The effectiveness of the repair was demonstrated on a pipeline whose wall thickness had decreased by 20%as a result of corrosion damage. At a nominal pressure of P=6 MPa,the maximum normal stress in the weakened area reached 381 MPa.The installation of a composite bandage reduced this stress to 312 MPa,making the repaired section virtually as strong as the undamaged pipeline.Due to the linearity of the problem, the results obtained can be easily used to find critical internal pressure values. 展开更多

In this investigation,a hybrid approach integrating the IDDES turbulence model and FW-H is employed to forecast the hydroacoustic of the rim driven thruster(RDT)under non-cavitation and uniform flow conditions at varying loading conditions(J=0.3 and J=0.6).It is revealed that the quadrupole term contribution in the P-FWH method significantly affects the monopole term in the low-frequency region, while it mainly affects the dipole term in the high-frequency region.Specifically, the overall sound pressure levels(SPL)of the RDT using the P-FWH method are 2.27 dB,10.03 dB,and 16.73 dB at the receiving points from R1 to R3 under the heavy-loaded condition, while they increase by 0.67 dB at R1,and decrease by 14.93 dB at R2,and 22.20 dB at R3,for the light-loaded condition. The study also utilizes the pressure-time derivatives to visualize the numerical noise and to pinpoint the dynamics of the vortex cores, and the optimization of the grid design can significantly reduce the numerical noise. The computational accuracy of the P-FWH method can meet the noise requirements for the preliminary design of rim driven thrusters. 展开更多

(Quasi-)closed-form results for the statistical properties of unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)airto-ground channels are derived for the first time using a novel spatial-vector-based method from a threedimensional(3-D)arbitrary-elevation one-cylinder model. The derived results include a closed-form expression for the space-time correlation function and some quasi-closed-form ones for the space-Doppler power spectrum density, the level crossing rate, and the average fading duration, which are shown to be the generalizations of those previously obtained from the two-dimensional(2-D)one-ring model and the 3-D low-elevation one-cylinder model for terrestrial mobile-to-mobile channels. The close agreements between the theoretical results and the simulations as well as the measurements validate the utility of the derived channel statistics.Based on the derived expressions, the impacts of some parameters on the channel characteristics are investigated in an effective, efficient, and explicable way, which leads to a general guideline on the manual parameter estimation from the measurement description. 展开更多

Ice crystal icing is an important cause of accidents in aircraft engines.Ice formation in aircraft engines can cause internal blades to freeze, affecting the quality of the air flow field and blocking the flow path.On the other hand, the entry of ice crystal particles into the combustion chamber can cause a decrease in temperature or even flameout, leading to engine surge or shutdown. Therefore,it is necessary to conduct multiphase flow tests on ice crystals for aircraft components such as aircraft engines.Conducting ice crystal multiphase flow tests on aircraft is an effective research method, but it requires the construction of an ice crystal multiphase flow test platform that meets relevant technical requirements. The paper focuses on the relevant experimental requirements and combines wind tunnel test structures to conduct multiphase flow numerical simulations on various forms of jet pipelines, obtaining particle motion distribution results. After comparison, the optimal form of jet structure is obtained, providing the best selection scheme for the design of relevant wind tunnel structures. 展开更多

As binary geological media,soil-rock mixtures(SRMs)exhibit a distinct gradational composition, leading to their unique mechanical behaviors. To appraise the stability of SRM slopes,it is essential to determine equivalent parameters of SRMs,which are typically obtained through experimental and numerical methods. In contrasted to other numerical methods, the numerical manifold method(NMM)is more effective in addressing SRM problems. This is because the high-precision regular mathematical meshes in NMM can be used without aligning with the soil-rock interfaces and boundaries of SRMs.In the current research, the equivalent strength parameters of SRMs,i.e.the equivalent cohesion ce and internal friction angleϕ_(e),are determined using NMM.Initially,an NMM triaxial numerical model is established and validated based on triaxial experiments.Subsequently, the soil and rock parameters are derived through parameter inversion. Moreover, the impacts of rock content, size, shape and rock blocks'major-axis orientation on ce andϕ_(e) of SRMs are thoroughly examined using the NMM triaxial numerical model.Additionally,a fitting function is proposed to linkϕ_(e) to the rock content and size of SRMs.When other influencing factors are fixed, the above fitting model leads to the following conclusions:(1)the predictedϕ_(e) of SRMs increase with the increase of rock content;and(2)SRM samples with smaller rocks display a higher predictedϕ_(e). 展开更多
