To effectively minimize the electromagnetic field response in the total field solution, we propose a numerical modeling method for the two-dimensional (2D) time- domain transient electromagnetic secondary field of the line source based on the DuFort- Frankel finite-difference method. In the proposed method, we included the treatment of the earth-air boundary conductivity, calculated the normalized partial derivative of the induced electromotive force (Emf), and determined the forward time step. By extending upward the earth-air interface to the air grid nodes and the zero-value boundary conditions, not only we have a method that is more efficient but also simpler than the total field solution. We computed and analyzed the homogeneous half-space model and the fiat layered model with high precision--the maximum relative error is less than 0.01% between our method and the analytical method--and the solution speed is roughly three times faster than the total-field solution. Lastly, we used the model of a thin body embedded in a homogeneous half-space at different delay times to depict the downward and upward spreading characteristics of the induced eddy current, and the physical interaction processes between the electromagnetic field and the underground low-resistivity body. 展开更多

A three-dimensional numerical model of laser-arc hybrid plasma for aluminum alloy fillet joints is developed in this study. This mod-el accounts for the geometric complexity of fillet joints, the physical properties of shielding gases with varying He-Ar ratios, and the coupling between arc plasma and laser-induced metal plume. The accuracy of the model is validated using a high-speed camera. The effects of varying He contents in the shielding gas on both the temperature and flow velocity of hybrid plasma,as well as the distribu-tion of laser-induced metal vapor mass, were investigated separately. The maximum temperature and size of arc plasma decrease as the He volume ratio increases, the arc distribution becomes more concentrated, and its flow velocity initially decreases and then sharply increases. At high helium content, both the flow velocity of hybrid plasma and metal vapor are high, the metal vapor is con-centrated on the right side of keyhole, and its flow appears chaotic. The flow state of arc plasma is most stable when the shielding gas consists of 50%He+50%Ar. 展开更多

Rock is geometrically and mechanically multiscale in nature, and the traditional phenomenological laws at the macroscale cannot render a quantitative relationship between microscopic damage of rocks and overall rock structural degradation. This may lead to problems in the evaluation of rock structure stability and safe life.Multiscale numerical modeling is regarded as an effective way to gain insight into factors affecting rock properties from a cross-scale view. This study compiles the history of theoretical developments and numerical techniques related to rock multiscale issues according to different modeling architectures, that is,the homogenization theory, the hierarchical approach, and the concurrent approach. For these approaches, their benefits, drawbacks, and application scope are underlined.Despite the considerable attempts that have been made, some key issues still result in multiple challenges. Therefore, this study points out the perspectives of rock multiscale issues so as to provide a research direction for the future. The review results show that,in addition to numerical techniques, for example,high-performance computing, more attention should be paid to the development of an advanced constitutive model with consideration of fine geometrical descriptions of rock to facilitate solutions to multiscale problems in rock mechanics and rock engineering. 展开更多

Software systems are vulnerable to security breaches as they expand in complexity and functionality. The confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data are gravely threatened by flaws in a system’s design, implementation,or configuration. To guarantee the durability&robustness of the software, vulnerability identification and fixation have become crucial areas of focus for developers, cybersecurity experts and industries. This paper presents a thorough multi-phase mathematical model for efficient patch management and vulnerability detection. To uniquely model these processes, the model incorporated the notion of the learning phenomenon in describing vulnerability fixation using a logistic learning function.Furthermore, the authors have used numerical methods to approximate the solution of the proposed framework where an analytical solution is difficult to attain. The suggested systematic architecture has been demonstrated through statistical analysis using patch datasets, which offers a solid basis for the research conclusions.According to computational research, learning dynamics improves security response and results in more effective vulnerability management. The suggested model offers a systematic approach to proactive vulnerability mitigation and has important uses in risk assessment, software maintenance, and cybersecurity. This study helps create more robust software systems by increasing patch management effectiveness, which benefits developers, cybersecurity experts, and sectors looking to reduce security threats in a growing digital world. 展开更多

To ensure the operational safety of railways in the landslide-prone areas of mountainous regions,a large-scale model test and numerical simulation were conducted to study the bending moment distribution, internal force distribution, deformation development, and crack propagation characteristics of a framed anti-sliding structure(FAS)under landslide thrust up to the point of failure. Results show that the maximum bending moment and its increase rate in the fore pile are greater than those in the rear pile, with the maximum bending moment of the fore pile approximately 1.1 times that of the rear pile. When the FAS fails, the displacement at the top of the fore pile is significantly greater, about 1.27 times that of the rear pile in the experiment.Major cracks develop at locations corresponding to the peak bending moments.Small transverse cracks initially appear on the upper surface at the intersection between the primary beam and rear pile and then spread to the side of the structure. At the failure stage, major cracks are observed at the pil-beam intersections and near the anchor points.Strengthening flexural stiffness at intersections where major cracks occur can improve the overall thrust-deformation coordination of the FAS,thereby maximizing its performance. 展开更多

Ensuring the stability of the surrounding rock mass is of great importance during the construction of a large underground powerhouse. The presence of unfavorable structural planes within the rock mass, such as faults, can lead to substantial deformation and subsequent collapse.A series of in situ experiments and discrete element numerical simulations have been conducted to gain insight into the progressive failure behavior and deformation response of rocks in relation to controlled collapse scenarios involving gently inclined faults.First, the unloading damage evolution process of the surrounding rock mass is characterized by microscopic analysis using microseismic(MS)data.Second, the moment tensor inversion method is used to elucidate the temporal distribution of MS event fracture types in the surrounding rock mass.During the development stage of the collapse, numerous tensile fracture events occur, while a few shear fractures corresponding to structural plane dislocation precede their occurrence. The use of the digital panoramic borehole camera, acoustic wave test, and numerical simulation revealed that gently inclined faults and deep cracks at a certain depth from the cavern periphery are the primary factors contributing to rock collapse. These results provide a valuable case study that can help anticipate and mitigate fault-slip collapse incidents while providing practical insights for underground cave excavation. 展开更多

Structure-type rockbursts frequently occur in deep tunnels, with structural planes and stress conditions being critical factors in their formation. In this study,we utilized specially developed analogous materials that exhibit the high brittleness and strength characteristics of deep hard rock to construct physical models representing different types of structural planes, including composite,exposed,non-exposed,and throughgoing structural planes.Physical simulation experiments were conducted on structuretype rockbursts in deep horseshoe-shaped tunnels, focusing on strain differentiation characteristics, critical triggering conditions, critical crack opening displacement, the incubation process, the reduction effects of structural planes on failure intensity, and formation mechanisms. These experiments were complemented by acoustic and optical monitoring,as well as discrete element numerical simulations,to provide a comprehensive analysis. The results revealed that the most significant strain heterogeneity in the surrounding rock occurs at the tip of the structural plane along the tunnel's minimum principal stress direction, driven by the combined effects of tensile and shear forces. We quantitatively determined the critical stress and strain conditions for structure-type rockbursts and evaluated the intensity of rockbursts induced by different structural planes using critical crack opening displacement(COD)values, the uniformity coefficient, and the curvature coefficient.Analysis of acoustic emission events, including frequency, amplitude, and b-value,indicated that the macro-fracture process is governed by both the principal stress differential and the characteristics of the structural plane.Furthermore, using the bearing capacity reduction coefficient,we found that exposed structural planes have the most significant weakening effect on rock mass strength, followed by non-exposed and throughgoing structural planes. The analysis of average frequency(AF)and rise angle(RA)parameters revealed a close correlation between the failure modes of structure-type rockbursts, the rock mass structure, and the stress levels. These findings provide critical theoretical support for the prediction and prevention of structure-type rockburst disasters. 展开更多

In this investigation,a hybrid approach integrating the IDDES turbulence model and FW-H is employed to forecast the hydroacoustic of the rim driven thruster(RDT)under non-cavitation and uniform flow conditions at varying loading conditions(J=0.3 and J=0.6).It is revealed that the quadrupole term contribution in the P-FWH method significantly affects the monopole term in the low-frequency region, while it mainly affects the dipole term in the high-frequency region.Specifically, the overall sound pressure levels(SPL)of the RDT using the P-FWH method are 2.27 dB,10.03 dB,and 16.73 dB at the receiving points from R1 to R3 under the heavy-loaded condition, while they increase by 0.67 dB at R1,and decrease by 14.93 dB at R2,and 22.20 dB at R3,for the light-loaded condition. The study also utilizes the pressure-time derivatives to visualize the numerical noise and to pinpoint the dynamics of the vortex cores, and the optimization of the grid design can significantly reduce the numerical noise. The computational accuracy of the P-FWH method can meet the noise requirements for the preliminary design of rim driven thrusters. 展开更多

Marine thin plates are susceptible to welding deformation owing to their low structural stiffness. Therefore, the efficient and accurate prediction of welding deformation is essential for improving welding quality. The traditional thermal elastic-plastic finite element method(TEP-FEM)can accurately predict welding deformation. However, its efficiency is low because of the complex nonlinear transient computation, making it difficult to meet the needs of rapid engineering evaluation. To address this challenge, this study proposes an efficient prediction method for welding deformation in marine thin plate butt welds. This method is based on the coupled temperature gradient-thermal strain method(TG-TSM)that integrates inherent strain theory with a shell element finite element model. The proposed method first extracts the distribution pattern and characteristic value of welding-induced inherent strain through TEP-FEM analysis. This strain is then converted into the equivalent thermal load applied to the shell element model for rapid computation. The proposed method-particularly,the gradual temperature gradient-thermal strain method(GTG-TSM)-achieved improved computational efficiency and consistent precision.Furthermore, the proposed method required much less computation time than the traditional TEP-FEM.Thus,this study lays the foundation for future prediction of welding deformation in more complex marine thin plates. 展开更多

This study focuses on the factors that may affect the feasibility of performing elliptical anisotropy analysis on azimuthal PP and PS-wave data in HTI media, with the aim of using the modeling results as guidance in real seismic data application. Our results reveal that there is an offset limitation for both PP- and PS-waves in elliptical anisotropy fitting, and that PS-waves show a wider applicable offset range and larger observable azimuthal anisotropy than PP-waves. The major axis of the elliptical fit to the amplitudes of the R-component is perpendicular to the fracture strike, which is opposite to that in PP-wave analysis. The azimuthal interval travel time of PS-waves shows a nearly elliptical distribution and the major axis of the fit ellipse is perpendicular to the fracture strike, which is same as that in PP-wave analysis. For data within the applicable offset range, the anisotropic magnitude obtained from amplitude and travel time attributes of PP- and PS-waves exhibits a dependence on fracture density, and the major to minor axis ratio of the fit ellipse may be used to infer the relative distribution of fracture densities. 展开更多

We introduce any even-order accuracy difference schemes of any-order derivatives derived from Taylor series expansion. Then, a finite-difference numerical modeling method with any evenorder accuracy is utilized to simulate seismic wave propagation in two-phase anisotropic media. Results indicate that modeling accuracy improves with the increase of difference accuracy order number. It is essential to find the optimal order number, grid size, and time step to balance modeling precision and computational complexity. In order to reasonably simulate tidal currents around small structures such as piles in a large-scale model domain, a 2-D hydrodynamic integrated model for Bohai Sea is established with the finite element method. The grid can be discretionarily refined as a non-structure triangle or quadrilateral so that piers can be treated as one or several impermeable elements with an area of 20 to 30 km^2 in a model domain over 85 700 km^2. The computational results of tidal levels and horizontal velocities are in good agreement with the field data. Based on the computed results by the model, the layout of an open 105 DWT liquefied natural gas (LNG)terminal in Caofeidian, Bohal Sea is effectively and reasonably optimized. The deformation and damage evolution of sandstone after heat treatment greatly influence the efficient and safe development of deep geothermal energy extraction. To investigate this issue, laboratory confined compression tests and numerical simulations were conducted on pre-holed sandstone specimens after heat treatment. The laboratory test results show that the failure modes are closely related to the heat treatment temperature, with increasing treatment temperature, the failure modes change from mixed and shear modes to a splitting mode. The cracks always initiate from the sidewalls of the hole and then propagate. The failure process inside the hole proceeds as follows:calm period, particle ejection period, rock fragment exfoliation period and rock failure period. The specimens have different final failure features for the entire rock after heat treatment, but have the same failure features inside the hole. These phenomena can be explained by numerical simulations. The numerical simulations reveal that the failure modes in the numerical results agree very well with those observed in the experimental results. The damage zone always occurs at sidewalls of the hole and then propagates to the entire rock affected by shear or tensile damage. From 20℃to 200℃,thermal effect may promote shear damage and restrain tensile damage, while from 200℃to 800℃,thermal effect promotes tensile damage and restrains shear damage.Notably, the damage zone near the sidewalls of the hole has the same distribution range and pattern. Finally, the differences in the mechanisms due to increasing heat temperature are evaluated using scanning electron microscope(SEM)observations. 展开更多

In this paper, the method is developed to extend the NPML to simulating elastic wave propagation in poroelastic media. Biot's equations are discretized and approximated to a staggered-grid by applying a fourth-order accurate central difference in space and a second-order accurate central difference in time. To deal with the numerical dispersion problem, by combining the staggeredgrid technology with the compact finite difference scheme, we derive a compact staggered- grid finite difference scheme from the first-order velocity-stress wave equations for the transversely isotropic media. Comparing the principal truncation error terms of the compact staggered-grid finite difference scheme, the staggered-grid finite difference scheme, and the compact finite difference scheme, we analyze the approximation accuracy of these three schemes using Fourier analysis. Finally, seismic wave numerical simulation in transversely isotropic (VTI) media is performed using the three schemes. In order to explore the influence of welding parameters and to investigate the Al alloy (AA) nugget formation process, a comprehensive model involving electrical-thermal-mechanical and metallurgical analysis was established to numerically display the resistance spot welding (RSW) process within multiple fields and understand the AA-RSW physics. A multi-disciplinary finite element method (FEM) framework and a empirical sub-model were built to analyze the affecting factors on weld nugget and the underlying nature of welding physics with dynamic simulation procedure. Specifically, a counter-intuitive phenomenon of the resistance time-variation caused by the transient inverse virtual variation (TIVV) effect was highlighted and analyzed on the basis of welding current and temperature distribution simulation. The empirical model describing the TIVV phenomenon was used for modifying the dynamic resistance simulation during the AA spot welding process. The numerical and experimental results show that the proposed multi-field FEM model agrees with the measured AA welding feature, and the modified dynamic resistance model captures the physics of nugget growth and the electrical-thermal behavior under varying welding current and fluctuating heat input. 展开更多

Estimation of shear strength and other mechanical characteristics of masonry wall panels through experimental research is the most reliable analysis approach. However, considering all the difficulties in performing experimental research, material costs, laboratory preparations and time expenses, it is not difficult to conclude that this approach is also not the most rational. Aside from experimental investigations, advanced analytical methods are considered cheaper and practical, which can approximately describe the mechanical behavior of masonry walls. The aim of this chapter is to demonstrate how advanced analytical methods, based on discrete and applied element methods, are capable of estimating, in close approximation, the realistic behavior of masonry walls. The use of advanced analysis methods for determination of the behavior of full-scaled masonry walls (with and without openings), avails the inclusion of infill masonry walls on the processes of modeling, analysis and design of building structures, without the need of extensive experimental investigations. This would result in achieving more approximate analytical building models in respect to their realistic behavior and ultimately achieve better optimization of structural design. 展开更多
