The lattice versions of the hydrodynamic model are described by the differential-difference equation and difference-difference equation, respectively. The stability conditions for the two models are obtained by using the linear stability theory. The modified KdV equation near the critical point is derived to describe the traffic jam by using the reductive perturbation method, and the kink-antikink soliton solutions related to the traffic density waves are obtained. The results show that the drivers' delay in sensing headway plays an important role in jamming transition.展开更多

In air traffic and airport management,experience gained from past operations is crucial in designing appropriate strategies when facing a new scenario.Therefore,this paper uses massive spatiotemporal flight data to id...In air traffic and airport management,experience gained from past operations is crucial in designing appropriate strategies when facing a new scenario.Therefore,this paper uses massive spatiotemporal flight data to identify similar traffic and delay patterns,which become critical for gaining a better understanding of the aviation system and relevant decision-making.However,as the datasets imply complex dependence and higher-order interactions between space and time,retrieving significant features and patterns can be very challenging.In this paper,we propose a probabilistic framework for highdimensional historical flight data.We apply a latent class model and demonstrate the effectiveness of this framework using air traffic data from 224 airports in China during 2014–2017.We find that profiles of each dimension can be clearly divided into various patterns representing different regular operations.To prove the effectiveness of these patterns,we then create an estimation model that provides preliminary judgment on the airport delay level.The outcomes of this study can help airport operators and air traffic managers better understand air traffic and delay patterns according to the experience gained from historical scenarios.展开更多

Like other big cities, Karachi is also facing problems due to lack of traffic management and poor drainage system. The main objective of the study is to model the interdisciplinary issues of storm water and its effect on the traffic of Karachi. The specific objectives are (1) to calibrate and validate urban hydraulic and traffic micro-simulation models and (2) to model storm water and traffic for future conditions. This study is carried out on a 3-km section of arterial road. In this study, loose coupling of two models is done. For urban drainage, PCSWMM, and for traffic, VISSIM is used. Both models are calibrated for an existing situation on rainfall event of August 3, 2013, and then used for prediction of future scenario based on 50-year and 100-year return periods of rainfall. Sensitivity analysis of VISSIM is performed. Locations and lengths of road sections, where ponding happens for the future scenario, are identified using PCSWMM. These lengths axe then marked in VISSIM as low-speed areas, and delays are measured. Analysis of PCSWMM shows that for 100-year return period, there is maximum 0.318 ha-m (3180 cubic meters) water stored in the depressions of the road after 10 h of rainfall. Analysis of VISSIM shows that for a 100-year return period, there is a maximum delay of 35 min on NIPA to Hasan Square section of University Road.展开更多

Firstly, the fuzzy set theory and the transitive closure algorithm are introduced. Then four different factors are selected to establish the flight classification model and a method is given to calculate the delay cost for each class. Finally, the proposed method is implemented in the sequencing problems of flights in a terminal area, and results are compared with that of the traditional classification method(TCM). Results show that the new classification model is effective in reducing the expenses of flight delays, thus optimizing the sequences of arrival and departure flights, and improving the efficiency of air traffic control.展开更多

The steady state under certain conditions is obtained. An error system around the steady state is studied further. Moreover, the condition for the state having no traffic jam is derived. A new control scheme is presented to suppress the traffic jam in the modified coupled map car-following model under the open boundary. A control signal including the velocity differences between the following and the considering vehicles, and between the preceding and the considering vehicles is used. The condition under which the traffic jam can be well suppressed is analysed. The results are compared with that presented by t^onishi et al. (the KKH model). The simulation results show that the temporal behaviour obtained in our model is better than that in the KKH model. The simulation results are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis.展开更多

The method c...Abstract: With a determinate danger zone and evacuation demand caused by an emergency, an optimization method for the evacuation zone with network reconfiguration based on dynamic simulation is proposed. The method contains three modules. First, the network in the evacuation zone is optimized by a model with the integrated strategy of lane reversal and intersection conflict elimination. Secondly, the dynamic evacuation simulation model based on the cell transmission model is applied to simulate the dynamic propagation process of evacuated vehicles in the network in the evacuation zone. The evacuation time for all evacuated vehicles leaving the danger zone is obtained and the setting of the current evacuation zone is fed back. Thirdly, the arrival distributions of evacuated vehicles at critical intersections of the evacuation zone are also obtained to estimate the delay at critical intersection to determine whether the intersection should be taken as the critical intersection in the next iteration. The evacuation zone is expanded gradually through iteration, and the reasonable evacuation zone and the optimal evacuation network is confirmed. Based on the survey of the parking lot and urban street network around Nanjing Olympic Sports Center, the models and the iterative algorithm were applied to obtain the optimal plan of the evacuation zone with network reconfiguration in an evacuation situation to verify the validity of the proposed method.展开更多
Time-dependent models are of great importance in highway engineering as they are appropriate for evaluating waiting times and queue lengths at intersections,which are integral parts of various activities in planning,v...Time-dependent models are of great importance in highway engineering as they are appropriate for evaluating waiting times and queue lengths at intersections,which are integral parts of various activities in planning,verification and decision support for infrastructure.After reviewing the literature of the main time-dependent models based on the coordinate transformation method and a discussion about some computational issues in time-evolution profiles for non-signalised intersections,the paper identifies the requirements these models have to satisfy in order to be used as"basic"cases for analysing complex evolutionary situations.Three"basic"cases are presented with their timedependent equations for vehicle waiting times and vehicle number;they have been completed and dimensionally homogenised in this paper.As they are recursive,these formulas can be applied for sequential intervals in the time domain in both vehicles and passenger car units.The closed-form expressions for state variables show to be mutually equivalent in comparison with discrete event simulation models and imbedded Markov chain results.For all the three models the paper presents a common deterministic simplification for average waiting time,with good approximation results in the tested cases.The proposed time-dependent formulas will contribute to a better adherence to the real phenomena,compared to the extremely simplified and unrealistic methods suggested by the international manuals for level of service assessment.The proposed formulas will be useful for current applications and possible future development in order to meet the emerging needs of road and transport engineering.展开更多
