Effects of layer quantities and stacking sequences on L-shape composite manufacturing qualities in using OOA(out-of-autoclave)prepregs were studied. The mechanisms of air evacuated in 5 kinds of lay-ups were revealed by image analysis of cut surfaces and thickness measurements. Results show that air in OOA prepregs is evacuated in two ways. Most of the air is forced out of layers directly by vacuum before air accesses in prepregs closed.Very little entrapped air moves perpendicularly to outer layers under hydrostatic resin pressure. When a laminate contains less than 16 layers, voids can hardly be found in layers. When a laminate contains more than 16 layers, voids cannot be expelled completely during the window of vertical movement. As for stacking sequences, the synergetic effect of slip function and nest function determines the thickness and voids content of laminates. Results show that the average of single layer thickness of unidirectional layers is the lowest, and the average of single layer thickness of quasi-isotropic layers is the highest. The voids content of quasi isotropic is the highest, which is consistent with the theoretical analysis. 展开更多

Fiber-reinforced composites are an ideal material for the lightweight design of aerospace structures. Especially in recent years, with the rapid development of composite additive manufacturing technology, the design optimization of variable stiffness of fiber-reinforced composite laminates has attracted widespread attention from scholars and industry. In these aerospace composite structures, numerous cutout panels and shells serve as access points for maintaining electrical, fuel, and hydraulic systems. The traditional fiber-reinforced composite laminate subtractive drilling manufacturing inevitably faces the problems of interlayer delamination, fiber fracture, and burr of the laminate. Continuous fiber additive manufacturing technology offers the potential for integrated design optimization and manufacturing with high structural performance. Considering the integration of design and manufacturability in continuous fiber additive manufacturing, the paper proposes linear and nonlinear filtering strategies based on the Normal Distribution Fiber Optimization (NDFO) material interpolation scheme to overcome the challenge of discrete fiber optimization results, which are difficult to apply directly to continuous fiber additive manufacturing. With minimizing structural compliance as the objective function, the proposed approach provides a strategy to achieve continuity of discrete fiber paths in the variable stiffness design optimization of composite laminates with regular and irregular holes. In the variable stiffness design optimization model, the number of candidate fiber laying angles in the NDFO material interpolation scheme is considered as design variable. The sensitivity information of structural compliance with respect to the number of candidate fiber laying angles is obtained using the analytical sensitivity analysis method. Based on the proposed variable stiffness design optimization method for complex perforated composite laminates, the numerical examples consider the variable stiffness design optimization of typical non-perforated and perforated composite laminates with circular, square, and irregular holes, and systematically discuss the number of candidate discrete fiber laying angles, discrete fiber continuous filtering strategies, and filter radius on structural compliance, continuity, and manufacturability. The optimized discrete fiber angles of variable stiffness laminates are converted into continuous fiber laying paths using a streamlined process for continuous fiber additive manufacturing. Meanwhile, the optimized non-perforated and perforated MBB beams after discrete fiber continuous treatment, are manufactured using continuous fiber co-extrusion additive manufacturing technology to verify the effectiveness of the variable stiffness fiber optimization framework proposed in this paper. 展开更多

Lightweight,high-strength,and heat-resistant protective structures have consistently been crucial for applications in extreme environments, such as aerospace, semiconductors, and nuclear power industries.Multilayered TC4/TB8 titanium(Ti)laminates, inspired by theheterostructures of natural biological shells, were fabricated using a hybrid diffusion bonding-hot rolling process followed by an aging treatment, resulting in an architected micro structure. The laminate achieves an ultra-high yield stress of 1020 MPa and proper uniform elongation of 4.2%at 500℃.The TB8 layers with high-density nano-precipitates and dislocations act as hard zone, contributing to high strength. The TC4 layers, with their bimodal structure consisting of coarse and fine grains characterized by equiaxed and lamellar structures, experience more plastic strain than the TB8 layers. The hetero deformation associated with the detwinning ofαgrains in the TC4 layer induces toughening at high temperatures. 展开更多

This study developed a five-layer Mg alloy laminate(pure Mg/AZ31/AZ91/AZ31/pure Mg)through an innovative synergistic strategy involving Al-element gradient design, extrusion, and short-term annealing.Microstructural characterization revealed hierarchical heterogeneities in grain size, texture intensity, dislocation density, and precipitated phases, accompanied by the formation of annealing twinning in pure Mg layer—a phenomenon rarely documented in Mg alloys.Mechanical tests demonstrated significant strengthening effects in all annealed samples, particularly in the 300℃/30 min annealed sample, which achieved the optimal comprehensive mechanical properties. The enhanced strength originated from the synergistic interaction among element-diffusion-induced solid solution strengthening, nanoscale β-Mg_(17)Al_(12) precipitation, and hetero-deformation-induced(HDI)strengthening.This approach breaks the strength-ductility trade-off induced by traditional annealing processes, offering a new paradigm for designing high-performance Mg alloy laminates. 展开更多

Fiber Metal Laminates(FMLs),as high-performance composite materials, demonstrate exceptional potential in a wide range of applications, such as aeronautical and astronautical industries. However, the traditional cured FMLs possess complex interlayer stresses and low forming limits, restricting further promotion and application of FMLs.Low-constraint FMLs exhibit a lower forming resistance and better formability due to no curing during the forming process;however, the formation mechanism and response are not clear. This paper presents the Forming Limit Diagram(FLD)of low-constraint GLARE(glass fiber reinforced aluminum laminates)based on the forming limit test, and compares it with the conventionally cured laminates to evaluate the differences in the forming limit. In addition, combined with the analysis of failure mechanism and micro-deformation mechanism of specimens, the influence of different temperatures(20–80℃)and forming states(width)on the deformation performance of laminates is further explored. The results reveal that the forming limit curve of low-constraint laminates shifts up with the increase of temperature, the forming limit initially increases with the increase of width, then followed by a gradual decrease, and the maximum principal strain of low-constraint laminates is increased by 29% at 80℃ compared to 20℃.The cured laminate has a principal strain range of 0–0.02,while the low-constraint laminates have a principal strain range of 0.03–0.14.Compared with cured laminates,low-constraint laminates possess a higher forming limit due to the improvement in deformable degree between layers by resin flow and fiber slippage, which enhances their formability. This study is expected to serve as a reference for establishing forming limit criteria and optimizing forming schemes for low-constraint laminates. 展开更多

The mechanical behaviour of Titanium-based Fiber Metal Laminates(FMLs)reinforced with Kevlar,Jute and the novel woven(Kevlar+Jute)fiber mat were evaluated through tensile, flexural,Charpy impact, and drop-weight tests. The FMLs were fabricated with various stacking configurations(2/1,3/2,4/3,and 5/4)to examine their influence on mechanical properties.Kevlar-reinforced laminates consistently demonstrated superior tensile and flexural strengths, with the highest tensile strength of 772 MPa observed in the 3/2 configuration, attributed to Kevlar's excellent load-bearing capacity.Jute-reinforced laminates exhibited lower performance due to poor bonding and early delamination, while the FMLs reinforced with woven(Kevlar+Jute)fiber mat achieved a balance between mechanical strength and cost-effectiveness by attaining a tensile strength of 718 MPa in the 3/2 configuration.Impact energy absorption results revealed that Kevlar-reinforced FMLs provided the highest energy absorption under Charpy tests, reaching 13.5 J in the 3/2 configuration. The 4/3 configu ration exhibited superior resistance under drop-weight impacts, absorbing 104.7 J of energy.Failure analysis using SEM revealed key mechanisms such as fiber debonding, delamination, and fiber pull-out,with increased severity observed in laminates with a higher number of fiber-epoxy layers, especially in the 5/4 configuration. This study highlights the potential of Kevlar-Jute hybrid fiber-reinforced FMLs for applications requiring high mechanical performance and impact resistance.Future research should explore advanced surface treatments and the environmental durability of these laminates for aerospace and automotive applications. 展开更多

To improve design accuracy and reliability of structures, this study solves the uncertain natural frequencies with consideration for geometric nonlinearity and structural uncertainty.Frequencies of the laminated plate with all four edges clamped(CCCC)are derived based on Navier's method and Galerkin's method. The novelty of the current work is that the number of unknowns in the displacement field model of a CCCC plate with free midsurface(CCCC-2 plate)is only three compared with four or five in cases of other exposed methods. The present analytical method is proved to be accurate and reliable by comparing linear natural frequencies and nonlinear natural frequencies with other models available in the open literature.Furthermore,a novel method for analyzing effects of mean values and tolerance zones of uncertain structural parameters on random frequencies is proposed based on a self-developed Multiscale Feature Extraction and Fusion Network(MFEFN)system.Compared with a direct Monte Carlo Simulation(MCS),the MFEFNbased procedure significantly reduces the calculation burden with a guarantee of accuracy. Our research provides a method to calculate nonlinear natural frequencies under two boundary conditions and presentes a surrogate model to predict frequencies for accuracy analysis and optimization design. 展开更多

Titanium plates with a Ti−O solid solution surface-hardened layer were cold roll-bonded with 304 stainless steel plates with high work hardening rates. The evolution and mechanisms affecting the interfacial bonding strength in titanium/stainless steel laminated composites were investigated. Results indicate that the hardened layer reduces the interfacial bonding strength from over 261 MPa to less than 204 MPa.During the cold roll-bonding process, the hardened layer fractures, leading to the formation of multi-scale cracks that are difficult for the stainless steel to fill. This not only hinders the development of an interlocking interface but also leads to the presence of numerous microcracks and hardened blocks along the nearly straight interface, consequently weakening the interfacial bonding strength. In metals with high work hardening rates, the conventional approach of enhancing interface interlocking and improving interfacial bonding strength by using a surface-hardened layer becomes less effective. 展开更多

On the basis ofa 2D 4-node Mindlin shell element method, a novel self-adapting delamination finite element method is presented, which is developed to model the delamination damage of composite laminates. In the method, the sublaminate elements are generated automatically when the delamination damage occurs or extends. Thus, the complex process and state of delamination damage can be simulated practically with high efficiency for both analysis and modeling. Based on the self-adapting delamination method, linear dynamic finite element damage analysis is performed to simulate the low-velocity impact damage process of three types of mixed woven composite laminates. Taking the frictional force among sublaminations during delaminating and the transverse normal stress into account, the analytical results are consistent with those of the experimental data. 展开更多

In this paper two set of GFRP specimens are manufactured and tested to investigate the relaxation behaviour under cyclic loading in the longitudinal and transversel direction. The relaxation of GFRP unidirectional laminates is evident for both cyclic loadings. Under longitudinal cyclic loading the relaxation is dependent on the number of loading cycles. Under transverse loading the relaxation depends on the loading cycles as well as the time of loading. Two expressions are set up to describe the relaxation for the longitudinal and transverse loading, and the predictions agree well with the experimental data. 展开更多

The energy release rate(ERR) of crack growth as the energy change at the same time t between the two states of the structure is redefined, one is with crack length a under the loading σ(t), the other is the state with crack length a+ Δ a under the same loading condition. Thus the defined energy release rate corresponds to the released energy when a crack grows from a to a+ Δ a in an infinitesimal time. It is found that under a given loading history, the ERR is a function of time, and its maximum value should correspond with the critical state for delamination to propagate. Following William’s work, the explicit expressions of ERR for DCB experimental configurations to measure the interfacial fracture toughness have been obtained through the classical beam assumption. 展开更多

Based on the conventional compliance and area methods, a high precision method named the angle method is presented in this work. The interlaminar fracture toughness is determined by measurement of the load and the bending angle at the loading point without measurement of the crack length, and the improvement of the conventional compliance method is made, which is more precise and can be used to general DCB specimen with unequal flexural stiffness of the cantilevers. The interlaminar fracture toughness in 0/ θ(θ =0°,30°,60°,90°) interfaces of two epoxy composites, one being the carbon fibre reinforced brittle matrix T300/4211, the other the carbon fibre reinforced tough matrix T300/3261, is measured by both compliance and angle methods, and the relationship between fracture toughness and the ply angle θ is obtained. It is found that the interlaminar fracture toughness is correlated with the type of matrix and the ply angles near the crack front. 展开更多

Therefore, the mechanical components using FML can contribute the enhanced safety level of the sound construction toward the whole body. In this study, the impact performance of carbon reinforced aluminum laminates (CARAL) is investigated by experiments and numerical simulations. Drop weight tests are carried out with the weight of 4.7 kg at the speed of 1 and 2 m/s, respectively. Dynamic non-linear transient analyses are also accomplished using a finite element analysis software, ABAQUS. The experiment results and numerical results are compared with impact load-time histories. Also, energy-time histories are applied to investigate the impact performance of CARAL. 展开更多

The conventional approach to analysis the buckling of rectangular laminates containing an embedded delamination subjected to the in-plane loading is to simplify the laminate as a beam-plate from which the predicted buckling load decreases as the length of the laminate increases. Two-dimensional analyses are employed in this paper by extending the one-dimensional model to take into consideration of the influence of the delamination width on the buckling performance of the laminates. The laminate is simply supported containing a through width delamination. A new parameterβ defined as the ratio of delamination length to delamination width is introduced with an emphasis on the influence of the delamination size. It is found that (i) when the ratio β is greater than one snap-through buckling prevails, the buckling load is determined by the delamination size and depth only; (ii) as the ratio β continues to increase, the buckling load will approach to a constant value. Solutions are verified with the well established results and are found in good agreement with the latter. 展开更多

In order to effectively describe the progressively intralaminar and interlam- inar damage for composite laminates, a three dimensional progressive damage model for composite laminates to be used for low-velocity impact is presented. Being applied to three-dimensional (3D) solid elements and cohesive elements, the nonlinear damage model can be used to analyze the dynamic performance of composite structure and its failure be- havior. For the intralaminar damage, as a function of the energy release rate, the damage model in an exponential function can describe progressive development of the damage. For the interlaminar damage, the damage evolution is described by the framework of the continuum mechanics through cohesive elements. Coding the user subroutine VUMAT of the finite element software ABAQUS/Explicit, the model is applied to an example, i.e., carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composite laminates under low-velocity impact. It is shown that the prediction of damage and deformation agrees well with the experimental results. 展开更多

Compressive properties of composite laminates after low velocity impact are one of the most serious circumstances that must be taken into account in damage tolerance design of composite structures. In order to investigate compressive properties of composite laminates after low velocity impact, three dimensional dynamic finite element method (FEM) was used to simulate low-velocity impact damage of 2 kinds of composite laminates firstly. Damage distributions and projective damage areas of the laminates were predicted under two impact energy levels. The analyzed damage after impact was considered to be the initial damage of the laminates under compressive loads. Then three dimensional static FEM was used to simulate the compressive failure process and to calculate residual compressive strengths of the impact damaged laminates. It is achieved to simulate the whole process from initial low-velocity impact damage to final compressive failure of composite laminates. Compared with experimental results, it shows that the numerical predicting results agree with the test results fairly well. 展开更多

A macro-micro analytical approach for the anti-penetrating contact problem at the interfaces of the delamination in symmetrically cross-plied,fiber-reinforced rectangular laminates is presented in this paper. The laminate is simply supported and subjected to a uniform transverse load with a through-width delamination buried at the center position.A contact factor is defined to characterize the contact effect and determined using the micro-mechanics of composite material.By analyzing the kinematics of nonlinear deformation at the interfaces of the delamination, the contact force is derived.Asymptotic solutions from perturbation analysis are presented. It is found that the deformation of the laminate involves a global deflection and a local buckling. The antipenetrating contact effects are characterized by the local buckling and are intrinsic properties of the laminates, relying only on the geometries of the delamination and the material properties.Parametric analyses show that the location and size of the contact areas and the distribution of the contact force are hardly affected by the aspect ratio. 展开更多

Compressive tests of [0]t2 and [90]t2 unidirectional laminates and [45/0/-45/90] 2s quasi-isotropic laminates are accomplished in both room-temperature and dry (RTD) and hygrothermal environment. And simulation studies on the compressive strength of Z-pinned laminates of [0112 and [45/0/-45/90] 2s are conducted by using finite element analysis (FEA). A microstructural unit cell for FEA is created to simulate a representative laminates unit with one pin. Within the unit cell, the first directions of the elements' material coordinate systems are changed to simulate the fibres' deflecting around the pin. The hygrothermal effect is simulated by the material properties' adjustments which are determined by the compressive tests of non-pined laminates. The experimental results indicate that the percentage of reduction in the compressive modulus of Z-pinned laminates caused by Z-pin becomes smaller with the percentage of 0° fibres decreasing in the laminates; the compressive strength of quasi-isotropic laminates reduces and the percentage of the reduction in the compressive strength declines with Z-pin volume content increasing, and the moisture absorption ratio of the Z-pinned specimens is greater than that of the non-pinned specimens, because the cracks around Z-pin increase the moisture absorption. In addition, the simulations show that the deflection of fibres around Z-pin is the main factor for the reduction in the compressive strength of Z-pinned unidirectional laminates, the dilution of fibre volume content caused by resin-rich pocket is the principal factor for the decline in the compressive strength of Z-pinned quasi-istropic laminates, and the compressive strength of Z-pinned specimens in hygrothermal environment reduces as the result of superimposition of some factors, including the changes in material properties caused by hygrothermal environment, the deflection of fibres and the resin-rich pocket caused by Z-pin. 展开更多
