The purpose of this paper is to make an assessment on the performance of a fiber reinforced plastic(FRP)helmet-head system subjected to ballistic impact.Firstly,a finite element(FE)model for the human head is developed.Constitutive models for each component of the head are determined and,in particular, strain rate effects of the compact bone of the skull and the hyperelastic property of the scalp are taken into account for the first time.Secondly,an FE model for Kevlar fiber reinforced plastic(KFRP)helmet is constructed based on the personal armor system for ground troops(PASGT)helmet.Recently developed dynamic constitutive models for metals and FRP laminates are employed for full metal jacketed(FMJ)bullet and the KFRP helmet. Finally, both the head and the helmet models are validated against available test data.Furthermore, the effects of various factors such as padding system, impact position, and projectile type on the ballistic performance of the helmet-head system have been systematically investigated with special attention being paid to the severity of head injury. It is found that the performance of the helmet with OA foam is advantageous over that of the helmet with strap-netting in head injury prevention. It is also found that a lower velocity(358 m/s)FMJ bullet poses more threats to head injury than a higher velocity(610 m/s)fragment-simulating projectile for the PASGT helmet-head system. 展开更多

Femoral head necrosis(FHN) is a common leg disorder in the poultry industry often leads to significant cartilage damage. The mechanism behind abnormal apoptosis in FHN broilers, leading to cartilage damage, remains unclear;although endoplasmic reticulum stress(ERS) has been found to play a role in glucocorticoid-induced FHN broilers. In this study,we collected samples from broilers with femoral head separation(FHS) and femoral head separation accompanied with growth plate lacerations(FHSL) in a broiler farm. The aim was to investigate the potential association between the severity of FHN,bone remodeling and cartilage damage.Additionally, primary chondrocytes were treated with methylprednisolone(MP) to construct an in vitro FHN model, followed by inhibition or activation of ERS or hypoxia inducible factor-1α(HIF-1α) to further investigate the mechanism of apoptosis in cartilage. The results suggested that cartilage appeared to be the appropriate tissue to investigate the potential mechanisms of FHN,as the degree of cartilage damage was found to be closely related to the severity of the disease.Bone quality was only affected in FHSL broilers, although factors related to bone metabolism were significantly altered among FHN-affected broilers. In addition, cartilage in FHN-affected broilers exhibited high levels of apoptosis and upregulated expression of ERS-related and HIF-1α,which was consistent with both in vivo and in vitro findings after MP treatment. The results were further supported by treatment with HIF-1α or ERS inhibition or activation. In conclusion, bone remodeling and cartilage homeostasis were affected in FHN broilers, but only cartilage damage was significantly exacerbated with FHN development. Moreover, activation of ERS or HIF-1α resulted in apoptosis in cartilage, thus exhibiting a significant correlation with FHN severity. 展开更多

In Wireless Sensor Networks(WSNs),survivability is a crucial issue that is greatly impacted by energy efficiency.Solutions that satisfy application objectives while extending network life are needed to address severe energy constraints inWSNs.This paper presents an Adaptive Enhanced GreyWolf Optimizer(AEGWO)for energy-efficient cluster head(CH)selection that mitigates the exploration–exploitation imbalance, preserves population diversity, and avoids premature convergence inherent in baseline GWO.The AEGWO combines adaptive control of the parameter of the search pressure to accelerate convergence without stagnation,a hybrid velocity-momentum update based on the dynamics of PSO,and an intelligent mutation operator to maintain the diversity of the population. The search is guided by a multi-objective fitness, which aims at maximizing the residual energy, equal distribution of CH,minimizing the intra-cluster distance, desirable proximity to sinks, and enhancing the coverage.Simulations on 100 nodes homogeneousWSN Tested the proposed AEGWO under the same conditions with LEACH,GWO,IGWO,PSO,WOA,and GA,AEGWO significantly increases stability and lifetime compared to LEACHand other tested algorithms;it has the best first, half, and last node dead, and higher residual energy and smaller communication overhead. The findings prove that AEGWO provides sustainable energy management and better lifetime extension, which makes it a robust, flexible clustering protocol of large-scaleWSNs. 展开更多

Animal behavioral studies are often combined with research concerning cognitive abilities.Larger brains usually mean more complex neural networks and advanced cognitive functions.By measuring the brain size of different individual animals,we can explore differences in behavioral complexity between populations or species. However, obtaining accurate measurements of brain size is challenging both in field and laboratory environments, especially for rare and endangered species. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop reliable methods for performing cranial brain mass. This study tests which external structures of the avian head can most accurately predict brain size.We selected five bird species from four orders, categorized external head measures into three types of parameters(direct, calculated and composite measurements),and analyzed these in relation to brain mass. The results showed that while head size can partially explain brain mass, the parameters of head height x head width were the most accurate predictors of brain mass in birds(90.4%).In addition, the positive correlation between endocranial volume and brain mass once again confirmed that avian endocranial volume can,to a certain extent, serve as a valid proxy for brain mass. Our study demonstrates that in the future we can more conveniently perform non-invasive measurements to better understand the relationship between bird brain size and behavior, ecology, and evolution. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Radial head fractures constitute approximately one-third of all elbow fractures, significantly impacting the young and active population. While open reduction and internal fixation is the preferred treatment for displaced fractures, its high complication rate in comminuted fractures has led to the increasing use of radial head arthroplasty(RHA).RHA provides improved functional outcomes with fewer complications, yet its long-term efficacy remains a topic of debate.AIM To evaluate the functional outcomes of patients undergoing RHA with a modular metallic prosthesis for comminuted Mason type III and IV radial head fractures.METHODS A prospective and retrospective hospital-based study was conducted at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital,Ludhiana over 32 months(January 2021-August 2023).A total of 26 patients with Mason type III and IV fractures were included, with six retrospective and 20 prospective cases.Functional outcomes were assessed using the Mayo Elbow Performance Score(MEPS),elbow range of motion, pain via Visual Analog Scale, and activities of daily living at immediate postoperative,three-month,and six-month follow-ups.RESULTS MEPS at 6 months follow up for 4 cases(15.38%)had good scores, and 22 cases(84.62%)had excellent scores, with a mean±SD of 97.31±6.67.Comparisons showed significant improvement from immediate post-operative to 3 months(P<0.0001),from immediate post-operative to 6 months(P<0.0001),and between 3 months and 6 months(P<0.0001).None of the patients had elbow instability after radial head replacement and 22 cases(84.62%)had no complications, while 3 cases(11.54%)had a stiff elbow, and 1 case(3.85%)had heterotopic ossification.CONCLUSION RHA is an effective treatment for comminuted radial head fractures, providing stable elbow function with minimal complications. 展开更多

Microglial activation that occurs rapidly after closed head injury may play important and complex roles in neuroinflammation-associated neuronal damage and repair. We previously reported that induced neural stem cells can modulate the behavior of activated microglia via CXCL12/CXCR4 signaling, influencing their activation such that they can promote neurological recovery. However, the mechanism of CXCR4 upregulation in induced neural stem cells remains unclear. In this study,we found that nuclear factor-κB activation induced by closed head injury mouse serum in microglia promoted CXCL12 and tumor necrosis factor-αexpression but suppressed insulin-like growth factor-1 expression. However, recombinant complement receptor 2-conjugated Crry(CR2-Crry)reduced the effects of closed head injury mouse serum-induced nuclear factor-κB activation in microglia and the levels of activated microglia,CXCL12,and tumor necrosis factor-α.Additionally,we observed that,in response to stimulation(including stimulation by CXCL12 secreted by activated microglia),CXCR4 and Crry levels can be upregulated in induced neural stem cells via the interplay among CXCL12/CXCR4,Crry,and Akt signaling to modulate microglial activation. In agreement with these in vitro experimental results,we found that Akt activation enhanced the immunoregulatory effects of induced neural stem cell grafts on microglial activation, leading to the promotion of neurological recovery via insulin-like growth factor-1 secretion and the neuroprotective effects of induced neural stem cell grafts through CXCR4 and Crry upregulation in the injured cortices of closed head injury mice.Notably, these beneficial effects of Akt activation in induced neural stem cells were positively correlated with the therapeutic effects of induced neural stem cells on neuronal injury, cerebral edema, and neurological disorders post–closed head injury. In conclusion, our findings reveal that Akt activation may enhance the immunoregulatory effects of induced neural stem cells on microglial activation via upregulation of CXCR4 and Crry, thereby promoting induced neural stem cell–mediated improvement of neuronal injury, cerebral edema, and neurological disorders following closed head injury. 展开更多

The integration of the digital economy with the traditional sales industry has prompted the robust growth of e-commerce.Live-streaming e-commerce,as a novel business model, has gained immense popularity. However,is⁃sues of regulatory loopholes and inefficacy continue to surface. In live-streaming e-commerce,the head anchor,as host of the live-streaming rooms, wields significant influence in determining the goods to be showcased and marketed.Such influence expands risks such as infringement of intellectual property rights.Yet the uncertainty in law concerning the identity of head anchors results in a lack of accountability.Current norms are inadequate in constraining the group of head anchors.Drawing on the principles of risk control, the alignment between benefit and risk, and the theory of so⁃cial cost control, this paper argues that it is both justifiable and feasible to impose a duty to exercise reasonable care on head anchors. To effectively enshrine this duty in law,it is of great importance to redefine the mechanism of identifying the duty of care of head anchors in live-streaming e-commerce.In particular, the contents of the duty of care under⁃taken by head anchors and the consequences of breaching such a duty of care should be clarified. 展开更多

The current artificial bone is unable to accurately replicate the inhomogeneity and anisotropy of human cancellous bone.To address this issue,we proposed a personalized approach based on clinical CT images to design mechanical equivalent porous structures for artificial femoral heads.Firstly, supported by Micro and clinical CT scans of 21 bone specimens, the anisotropic mechanical parameters of human cancellous bone in the femoral head were characterized using clinical CT values(Hounsfield unit). After that, the equivalent porous structure of cancellous bone was designed based on the gyroid surface, the influence of its degree of anisotropy and volume fraction on the macroscopic mechanical parameters was investigated by finite element analysis.Furthermore,a mapping relationship between CT values and the porous structure was established by jointly solving the mechanical parameters of the porous structure and human cancellous bone, allowing the design of personalized gradient porous structures based on clinical CT images. Finally,to verify the mechanical equivalence, implant press-in tests were conducted on 3D-printed artificial femoral heads and human femoral heads, the influence of the porous structure’s cell size in bone-implant interaction problems was also explored. Results showed that the minimum deviations of press-in stiffness(<15%)and peak load(<5%)both occurred when the cell size was 20%to 30%of the implant diameter. In conclusion, the designed porous structure can replicate the human cancellous bone-implant interaction at a high level, indicating its effectiveness in optimizing the mechanical performance of 3D-printed artificial femoral head. 展开更多

Fusarium head blight(FHB),mainly caused by Fusarium graminearum,is one of the most devastating diseases of wheat worldwide.Identification and validation of major quantitative trait loci(QTLs)for FHB resistance without negative effects on agronomic traits is critical to success in breeding FHB-resistant cultivars. In this study,a stable major QTL on chromosome arm 2DL was identified by evaluating a recombinant inbred line(RIL)population derived from Shi4185×Shijiazhuang 8 in both field and greenhouse experiments.QTL mapping and pedigree analyses indicated that the 2DL QTL is the same as QFhb-2DL previously identified in Ji5265;therefore,it was designated Fhb9.Four kompetitive amplicon sequence polymorphism(KASP)markers were developed based on exome capture sequencing data to enhance marker density in the Fhb9 region, and it was delimited to an interval between single nucleotide polymorphism(SNP)markers KASP-12056(533.8 Mb)and KASP-525(525.9 Mb)explained 26.0-30.1%of the phenotypic variation.Analysis of the geographic distribution of the Fhb9 resistance allele suggests that it originated from the Huang-Huai winter wheat region in China. The very low frequency of Fhb9 in modern Chinese cultivars reveals that it has not been widely deployed in breeding programs.Field and greenhouse evaluations of yield-related traits in near-isogenic lines(NILs)contrasting in Fhb9 alleles reveal that the Fhb9 resistance allele have no adverse effects on these traits.Fhb9 showed an additive effect on enhancing FHB resistance with Fhb1.Therefore,Fhb9 is a valuable major QTL for improving FHB resistance in wheat, and the near-diagnostic markers developed in this study will facilitate its deployment in wheat breeding programs. 展开更多

Fusarium head blight(FHB)is a serious fungal disease that affect small grain cereals, causing significant wheat(Triticum aestivum L.)yield and quality losses globally.Breeding disease-resistant wheat varieties is key to address FHB-related challenges, but its progress is delayed by traditional methods due to the small-scale,laborious and relatively subjective nature of manual assessment. This study presents a new approach that combines ultralow-altitude drone phenotyping with an optimized You Only Look Once(YOLO)model to examine FHB in wheat, enabling us to perform large-scale and automated symptomatic analysis of this disease. We first established an Open FHB(OFHB)training dataset, consisting of 4867 diseased and 106,801 healthy spikes collected from 132 commercial breeding lines during FHB progression. Then,a deep learning model called YOLOv8-WFD was trained for detecting healthy and diseased spikes, followed by an adaptive Excess Green method to identify symptomatic regions and thus FHBrelated traits on spikes. To study resistance levels,we employed an unsupervised SHapley Additive exPlanations(SHAP)method to pinpoint key traits between 10 and 20 d after inoculation(DAIs),resulting in the classification of 423 varieties trialed during the 2023–2024 growing seasons into four resistance levels(i.e.,highly and moderately susceptible, and moderately and highly resistant),which were highly correlated with field specialists’evaluations. Finally,we derived disease developmental curves based on measures of key traits during 10–20 DAI,quantifying varietal disease progression patterns over time.To our knowledge, this work represents a significant advancement in large-scale disease phenotyping and automated analysis of FHB in wheat, providing a valuable toolkit for breeders and plant researchers to assess resistance levels, select disease-resistant varieties, and understand dynamics of the fungal disease. 展开更多

Yellow rust(Puccinia striiformis f.sp.Tritici,YR)and fusarium head blight(Fusarium graminearum,FHB)are the two main diseases affecting wheat in the main grain-producing areas of East China, which is common for the two diseases to appear simultaneously in some main production areas. It is necessary to discriminate wheat YR and FHB at the regional scale to accurately locate the disease in space, conduct detailed disease severity monitoring, and scientific control.Four images on different dates were acquired from Sentinel-2,Landsat-8,and Gaofen-1 during the critical period of winter wheat, and 22 remote sensing features that characterize the wheat growth status were then calculated.Meanwhile,6 meteorological parameters that reflect the wheat phenological information were also obtained by combining the site meteorological data and spatial interpolation technology. Then, the principal components(PCs)of comprehensive remote sensing and meteorological features were extracted with principal component analysis(PCA).The PCs-based discrimination models were established to map YR and FHB damage using the random forest(RF)and backpropagation neural network(BPNN).The models’performance was verified based on the disease field truth data(57 plots during the filling period)and 5-fold cross-validation.The results revealed that the PCs obtained after PCA dimensionality reduction outperformed the initial features(IFs)from remote sensing and meteorology in discriminating between the two diseases.Compared to the IFs,the average area under the curve for both micro-average and macro-average ROC curves increased by 0.07 in the PCs-based RF models and increased by 0.16 and 0.13,respectively,in the PCs-based BPNN models.Notably, the PCs-based BPNN discrimination model emerged as the most effective, achieving an overall accuracy of 83.9%.Our proposed discrimination model for wheat YR and FHB,coupled with multi-source remote sensing images and meteorological data, overcomes the limitations of a single-sensor and single-phase remote sensing information in multiple stress discrimination in cloudy and rainy areas. It performs well in revealing the damage spatial distribution of the two diseases at a regional scale, providing a basis for detailed disease severity monitoring, and scientific prevention and control. 展开更多

Numerous studies have demonstrated that the high expression of CXC motif chemokine ligand 16(CXCL16)in cancer correlates with poor prognosis,as well as tumor cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. While CXCL16 can serve as a tumor biomarker, the underlying mechanism in modulating head and neck squamous cell carcinoma(HNSCC)remains unclear. In this study, the aimed was to investigate the CXCL16 expression in HNSCC and to uncover the potential underlying mechanism.Hereby,we determined the high expression of CXCL16 in The Cancer Genome Atlas(TCGA)database,as well as in tissue samples from patients with HNSCC at our central hospital and from HNSCC cell lines. The results showed that CXCL16 knockdown inhibited the proliferation, migration, and invasion of HNSCC cells.Mechanistically, transcriptome sequencing revealed that CXCL16 may affect HNSCC cell growth by regulating the antioxidant pathway of glutathione peroxidase 1(GPX1).The reactive oxygen species(ROS)levels were elevated in small interfering CXCL16(si-CXCL16)cells,which may contribute to the inhibition of cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. Moreover, treatment of cells with the GPX1 inhibitor eldecalcitol(ED-71)revealed that HNSCC cell growth was significantly inhibited in the synergistic group of si-CXCL16 and GPX1 inhibitor compared to the si-CXCL16 group. In conclusion,CXCL16 contributed to the development of HNSCC cells by modulating the GPX1-mediated antioxidant pathway. Thus, targeting cellular CXCL16 expression seems to be a promising strategy for treating HNSCC. 展开更多

In recent years, the concept of digital human has attracted widespread attention from all walks of life, and the modelling of high-fidelity human bodies, heads, and hands has been intensively studied. This paper focuses on head modelling and proposes a generic head parametric model based on neural radiance fields.Specifically,we first use face recognition networks and 3D facial expression database FaceWarehouse to parameterize identity and expression semantics, respectively, and use both as conditional inputs to build a neural radiance field for the human head, thereby improving the head model’s representation ability while ensuring editing capabilities for the identity and expression of the rendered results;then, through a combination of volume rendering and neural rendering, the 3D representation of the head is rapidly rendered into the 2D plane, producing a high-fidelity image of the human head. Thanks to the well-designed loss functions and good implicit representation of the neural radiance field, our model can not only edit the identity and expression independently, but also freely modify the virtual camera position of the rendering results. It has excellent multi-view consistency, and has many applications in novel view synthesis, pose driving and more. 展开更多
