This report presents a forensic evaluation of a case involving blindness(visual acuity grade 5)following a bee/wasp sting to the left eye.Through systematic analysis of the patient’s multiple hospital admissions, postoperative follow-up data, and a review of the pathological mechanisms of ocular injury caused by bee venom, this study comprehensively assesses the injury characteristics, treatment course, and visual outcomes.Bee venom induces severe complications such as corneal damage, uveitis, cataract, and secondary glaucoma through multiple mechanisms including direct cytotoxicity,immune-inflammatory responses, and enzymatic hydrolysis.Despite interventions including anterior chamber irrigation, phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation, and antiglaucoma surgery, the affected eye ultimately lost light perception.Forensic examination confirmed the absence of light perception in the left eye and abnormal visual pathway function, consistent with clinical observations.According to the relevant Chinese disability assessment standard(JR/T 0083-2013,Article 4.2.2),the injury was classified as grade 7 disability. This study provides an in-depth discussion of the mechanisms and key forensic identification points in bee-sting-induced blindness, offering a scientific reference for similar forensic clinical cases. 展开更多

As forensic humanitarian and forensic human rights anthropology has continued to evolve,an ongoing concern in the field is meaningful engagement with survivors and the imperative to do no harm. For forensic anthropologists attempting to engage in grassroots forensic intervention, unaffiliated with an international investigation, means for effectively accessing and engaging communities has not been widely discussed. Here, forensic anthropologists draw on multiple,cross-cultural contexts to discuss methods and techniques for introducing forensic partnerships to communities. To do this, the scientist must consider their positionality as well as that of the stakeholders, develop effective local relationships, and consider a community-grounded approach. This paper argues that drawing on broader cultural anthropological training, ultimately informs one’s ability to gain entry into at-risk and vulnerable communities while minimizing harm.To illustrate this point, examples are drawn from Canada,Uganda,Cyprus, and Somaliland. 展开更多

With the rapid advancement of visual generative models such as Generative Adversarial Networks(GANs)and stable Diffusion, the creation of highly realistic Deepfake through automated forgery has significantly progressed. This paper examines the advancements inDeepfake detection and defense technologies, emphasizing the shift from passive detection methods to proactive digital watermarking techniques.Passive detection methods, which involve extracting features from images or videos to identify forgeries, encounter challenges such as poor performance against unknown manipulation techniques and susceptibility to counter-forensic tactics. In contrast, proactive digital watermarking techniques embed specificmarkers into images or videos, facilitating real-time detection and traceability, thereby providing a preemptive defense againstDeepfake content. We offer a comprehensive analysis of digitalwatermarking-based forensic techniques, discussing their advantages over passivemethods and highlighting four key benefits:real-time detection, embedded defense, resistance to tampering, and provision of legal evidence.Additionally, the paper identifies gaps in the literature concerning proactive forensic techniques and suggests future research directions, including cross-domain watermarking and adaptive watermarking strategies.By systematically classifying and comparing existing techniques, this review aims to contribute valuable insights for the development of more effective proactive defense strategies in Deepfake forensics. 展开更多

The accelerated global adoption of electric vehicles(EVs)is driving significant expansion and increasing complexity within the EV charging infrastructure, consequently presenting novel and pressing cybersecurity challenges. While considerable effort has focused on preventative cybersecurity measures,a critical deficiency persists in structured methodologies for digital forensic analysis following security incidents,a gap exacerbated by system heterogeneity, distributed digital evidence, and inconsistent logging practices which hinder effective incident reconstruction and attribution. This paper addresses this critical need by proposing a novel,data-driven forensic framework tailored to the EV charging infrastructure, focusing on the systematic identification, classification, and correlation of diverse digital evidence across its physical, network, and application layers. Our methodology integrates open-source intelligence(OSINT)with advanced system modeling based on a three-layer cyber-physical system architecture to comprehensively map potential evidentiary sources.Key contributions include a comprehensive taxonomy of cybersecurity threats pertinent to EV charging ecosystems, detailed mappings between these threats and the resultant digital evidence to guide targeted investigations, the formulation of adaptable forensic investigation workflows for various incident scenarios, and a critical analysis of significant gaps in digital evidence availability within current EV charging systems, highlighting limitations in forensic readiness. The practical application and utility of this method are demonstrated through illustrative case studies involving both empirically-derived and virtual incident scenarios. The proposed datadriven approach is designed to significantly enhance digital forensic capabilities, support more effective incident response, strengthen compliance with emerging cybersecurity regulations, and ultimately contribute to bolstering the overall security, resilience, and trustworthiness of this increasingly vital critical infrastructure. 展开更多

The generation of a DNA profile from skeletal remains is an important part of the identifica-tion process in both mass disaster and unidentified person cases. Since bones and teeth are often the only biological materials remaining after exposure to environmental conditions, intense heat, certain traumatic events and in cases where a significant amount of time has passed since the death of the individual, the ability to purify large quantities of informative DNA from these hard tissues would be beneficial. Since sampling the hard tissues for gen-etic analysis is a destructive process, it is important to understand those environmental and intrinsic factors that contribute to DNA preservation. This will serve as a brief introduction to these topics, since skeletal sampling strategies and molecular taphonomy have been dis-cussed in depth elsewhere. Additionally advances in skeletal DNA extraction and analysis will be discussed. Currently there is great variation in the DNA isolation methods used by laboratories to purify DNA from the hard tissues;however, a standardized set of short tan-dem repeat (STR) loci is analyzed by many US laboratories to allow for comparisons across samples and jurisdictions. Recent advances have allowed for the generation of DNA profiles from smaller quantities of template DNA and have expanded the number of loci analyzed for greater discriminatory power and predictions regarding the geographic ancestry and phenotype of the individual. Finally, utilizing databases and expanding the number of com-parison samples will be discussed in light of their role in the identification process. 展开更多

The terrorist attacks of November 2015 led to the immediate death of 129 victims admitted to the Legal and Forensic Medicine Institute of Paris, including 41 unidentified.During the Disaster Victim Identification(DVI)operations,22 bodies were examined by the postmortem(PM)dental team with the aim of establishing PM odontograms. At the same time, the dental expert in the antemortem(AM)unit collected a large number of dental files, progressively filtered as the list of missing persons became reduced.Feedback from these events has highlighted the difficulties of implementing the DVI chain principles in a legal framework, published the day before the attacks, and also the technical complexity of collecting dental data on a week end of terror. The return on experience after this event has represented a paradigm shift on previous methods of DVI in Paris and even more in France.Indeed, the victim identification procedure was redesigned, integrating new technical means such as a CT scan directly on spot, allowing the extraction of maxillofacial data as soon as possible in order to support the PM dental examination team. Moreover, the National Dental Council proceeded to the overall remodeling of the dental identification unit, which is composed of trained members, from local, regional and national aspects. These forensic experts are dedicated,at the request of the legal authorities,to DVI operations and deployed throughout the country capable of managing AM and PM data. This unit aims also to share experiences and awarenessraising among health professionals and investigators in order to optimize a better submission of AM elements and also to enhance the major interest of odontology as a primary identifier in disaster. 展开更多

Clinical forensic imaging encompasses the diverse application of imaging procedures that serve the same purpose:to enable the analysis and investigation of criminal activities and consequences of a crime. All kinds of imaging techniques and their corresponding images can be subsumed under“forensigraphy”,a more comprehensive term for forensic imaging created by the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Clinical Forensic Imaging in Graz,Austria. As the word forensigraphy suggests, criminal imaging material should be of use in forensic investigations.Ideally, this can lead to new findings that would not have been revealed without the application of imaging techniques and are moreover admissible as evidence in criminal proceedings. However, the admissibility of evidence can only be facilitated through the implementation of clinical forensic imaging techniques into the forensic routine case work, which requires a precise pre-analysis of the corresponding legal framework.Because taking and displaying internal images of a person’s body touches upon various aspects of one’s physical and psychological integrity, imaging methods in general and clinical forensic imaging methods especially have a strong impact on and interfere regularly with the fundamental rights of the concerned person.Particularly with regard to a possible medical context, certain legal regulations have to be taken into account. Therefore, this paper examines forensic imaging in the field of radiological forensigraphy, specifically its in vivo(i.e.clinical)application.It is designed to enlighten readers as to the great significance of legal barriers that emerge from fundamental rights,as laid down in the European Convention on Human Rights(ECHR),when dealing with clinical forensic imaging. As a result, the legal framework of clinical forensic imaging procedures are comprehensively described, the relevant fundamental rights, especially the right to respect for private and family life, the right to data protection and certain procedural guarantees, are concisely presented to further raise awareness regarding the importance of fundamental rights. 展开更多

The MiSeq FGx^(TM) Forensic Genomics System types 231 genetic markers in one multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. The markers include core forensic short tandem repeats (STRs) as well as identity, ancestry and phenotype informative short nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs).In this work, the MiSeq FGx^(TM) Forensic Genomics System was evaluated by analysing reproducibility, sensitivity, mixture identification and forensic phenotyping capabilities of the assay.Furthermore, the genotype calling of the ForenSeq^(TM) Universal Analysis Software was verified by analysing fastq.gz files from the MiSeq FGx^(TM) platform using the softwares STRinNGS and GATK.Overall, the performance of the MiSeq FGx^(TM) Forensic Genomics System was high. However, locus and allele drop-outs were relatively frequent at six loci (two STRs and four human identification SNPs) due to low read depth or skewed heterozygote balances, and the stutter ratios were larger than those observed with conventional STR genotyping methods. The risk of locus and allele drop-outs increased dramatically when the amount of DNA in the first PCR was lower than 250 pg.Two-person 50∶1 mixtures were identified as mixtures, whereas 100∶1 and 1000∶1 mixtures were not.Y-chromosomal short tandem repeats (Y-STRs) alleles were detected in the 100∶1 and 1000∶1 female/male mixtures. The ForenSeq^(TM) Universal Analysis Software provided the data analyst with useful alerts that simplified the analysis of the large number of markers. Many of the alerts were due to user-defined,locus-specific criteria. The results shown here indicated that the default settings should be altered for some loci. Also, recommended changes to the assay and software are discussed. 展开更多

The probative value of animal forensic genetic evidence relies on laboratory accuracy and reliability.Inter-laboratory comparisons allow laboratories to evaluate their performance on specific tests and analyses and to continue to monitor their output. The International Society for Animal Genetics(ISAG)administered animal forensic comparison tests(AFCTs)in 2016 and 2018 to assess the limitations and capabilities of laboratories offering forensic identification, parentage and species determination services. The AFCTs revealed that analyses of low DNA template concentrations(≤300 pg/μL)constitute a significant challenge that has prevented many laboratories from reporting correct identification and parentage results. Moreover,a lack of familiarity with species testing protocols, interpretation guidelines and representative databases prevented over a quarter of the participating laboratories from submitting correct species determination results.Several laboratories showed improvement in their genotyping accuracy over time. However, the use of forensically validated standards, such as a standard forensic short tandem repeat(STR)kit, preferably with an allelic ladder, and stricter guidelines for STR typing, may have prevented some common issues from occurring, such as genotyping inaccuracies, missing data, elevated stutter products and loading errors. The AFCTs underscore the importance of conducting routine forensic comparison tests to allow laboratories to compare results from each other.Laboratories should keep improving their scientific and technical capabilities and continuously evaluate their personnel’s proficiency in critical techniques such as low copy number(LCN)analysis and species testing.Although this is the first time that the ISAG has conducted comparison tests for forensic testing, findings from these AFCTs may serve as the foundation for continuous improvements of the overall quality of animal forensic genetic testing. 展开更多
