The teaching of professionalism,a key aspect of medical competence that regulates physician’s behavior towards patients,colleagues,society,and self,should be included in the curriculum of every training program.Studies suggest a variety of formats to teach and evaluate professionalism in residents,being role modeling,reflection,case discussions,and 360-degree assessments the most commonly used.However,little is published about the need to train faculty for teaching and evaluating professionalism,or how to improve institutional culture,so that principles that are indicated to teach in theory are also fulfilled in practice. 展开更多

The Outcomes of Chinese Visiting Scholars’Experiences at Canadian Universities:Implications for Faculty Development at Chinese Universities 被引量:3

This article examines the outcomes of the overseas experiences of Chinese visiting scholars and the implications of visiting scholar programs for faculty development at Chinese universities.On the basis of semi-structured interviews with 17 returned Chinese visiting scholars who spent six to 12 months in a faculty of education at one of five Canadian universities,the following significant aspects of their experiences and related outcomes were highlighted:The cycle of overseas experiences and associated outcomes of Chinese visiting scholars,factors influencing the outcomes of their overseas experiences,visiting scholar programs as a type of faculty development,and China-Canada academic collaboration through visiting scholar programs.The findings support the literature-based conceptual model for investigating the experiences and outcomes of visiting scholars.In the new era of sending university faculty abroad,we suggest that visiting scholar programs should be treated as an important approach to professional development for faculty and be incorporated into a comprehensive faculty development package for Chinese university faculty. 展开更多

Generative AI(GenAI)is rapidly transforming higher education.This study explores the imperative for curriculum reform to effectively integrate these powerful tools of GenAI into education and prepare students for an AI-driven world.It also proposes a comprehensive framework encompassing three key strategies:(1)fostering AI literacy across disciplines through tiered courses that address fundamental concepts,applied uses,and advanced techniques;(2)shifting pedagogical approaches from rote memorization to problem-solving,emphasizing active learning strategies such as problemoriented and project-based learning,and encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration;and(3)establishing dynamic updating mechanisms of curriculum,including partnerships with industry and research institutions,modular curriculum design,and cultivating students’self-learning abilities.Moreover,this study addresses critical considerations for successful implementation,such as faculty training,resource allocation,ethical implications,assessment strategies,and the maintenance of academic integrity in the face of AI-generated content.Furthermore,this study provides a roadmap for educators and institutions to navigate the opportunities and challenges of GenAI,empowering students to thrive in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. 展开更多

This article argues that ideas from the ancient past supply insight about the future of Chinese universities.I make this case by outlining three claims about the nature and purpose of education in Homer,Plato,and Augustine.I propose that conversations based on these ideas illuminate central underlying problems facing Chinese higher education today:Educating the next generation to be properly assertive and make complex judgments,and helping faculty see their own motives and impact clearly.To show this,I explain why discussions of ancient Western authors are useful for the present moment,explaining what vistas these texts open.I conclude by clarifying how the exercise can help China achieve its educational goals. 展开更多
