In the incremental sheet forming (ISF) process, springback is a very important factor that affects the quality of parts. Predicting and controlling springback accurately is essential for the design of the toolpath for ISF. A three-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element model (FEM) was developed to simulate the process and the simulated results were compared with those from the experiment. The springback angle was found to be in accordance with the experimental result, proving the FEM to be effective. A coupled artificial neural networks (ANN) and finite element method technique was developed to simulate and predict springback responses to changes in the processing parameters. A particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm was used to optimize the weights and thresholds of the neural network model. The neural network was trained using available FEM simulation data. The results showed that a more accurate prediction of s!oringback can be acquired using the FEM-PSONN model. 展开更多

In modern ZnO varistors, traditional aging mechanisms based on increased power consumption are no longer relevant due to reduced power consumption during DC aging.Prolonged exposure to both AC and DC voltages results in increased leakage current, decreased breakdown voltage, and lower nonlinearity, ultimately compromising their protective performance. To investigate the evolution in electrical properties during DC aging, this work developed a finite element model based on Voronoi networks and conducted accelerated aging tests on commercial varistors.Throughout the aging process,current-voltage characteristics and Schottky barrier parameters were measured and analyzed. The results indicate that when subjected to constant voltage, current flows through regions with larger grain sizes, forming discharge channels. As aging progresses, the current focus increases on these channels, leading to a decline in the varistor’s overall performance.Furthermore, analysis of the Schottky barrier parameters shows that the changes in electrical performance during aging are non-monotonic.These findings offer theoretical support for understanding the aging mechanisms and condition assessment of modern stable ZnO varistors. 展开更多

The nickel-based superalloy GH4169 is an important material for high temperature applications in the aerospace industry. However, due to its poor machinability, GH416g is hard to be cut and generates saw-tooth chips during high speed machining, which could significantly affect the dynamic cutting force, cutting temperature fluctuation, tool life, and the surface integrity of the parts. In this paper, the saw-tooth chip formation mechanism of superalloy GH4169 was investigated by the elasto-viscoplastic finite element method (FEM). Using the finite element software of ABAQUS/Explicit, the deformation of the part during high speed machining was simulated. The effective plastic strain, the temperature field, the stress distribution, and the cutting force were analyzed to determine the influence of the cutting parameters on the saw-tooth chip formation. The study on broaching performance has great effect on selecting suitable machining parameters and improving tool life. 展开更多

CO_(2) drilling is a promising underbalance drilling technology with great advantages, such as lower cutting force, intense cooling and excellent lubrication. However,in the underbalance drilling, the mechanism of the coupling CO_(2) jet and polycrystalline-diamond-compact(PDC)cutter are still unclear.Whereby,we established a coupled smoothed particle hydrodynamics/finite element method(SPH/FEM)model to simulate the composite rock-breaking of high-pressure CO_(2) jet&PDC cutter.Combined with the experimental research results, the mechanism of composite rock-breaking is studied from the perspectives of rock stress field, cutting force and jet field. The results show that the composite rock-breaking can effectively relieve the influence of vibration and shock on PDC cutter.Meanwhile, the high-pressure CO_(2) jet has a positive effect on carrying rock debris, which can effectively reduce the temperature rising and the thermal wear of the PDC cutter. In addition, the effects of CO_(2) jet parameters on composite rock-breaking were studied, such as jet impact velocity, nozzle diameter, jet injection angle and impact distance. The studies show that when the impact velocity of the CO_(2) jet is greater than 250 m/s,the CO_(2) jet could quickly break the rock.It is found that the optimal range of nozzle diameter is 1.5–2.5 mm,the best injection angle of CO_(2) jet is 60,the optimal impact distance is 10 times the nozzle diameter. The above studies could provide theoretical supports and technical guidance for composite rock-breaking,which is useful for the CO_(2) underbalance drilling and drill bit design. 展开更多

A numerical model using the coupled smoothed panicle hydrodynamics-finite element method (SPH-FEM) approach is presented for analysis of structures under blast loads. The analyses on two numerical cases, one for free field explosive and the other for structural response under blast loads, are performed to model the whole processes from the propagation of the pressure wave to the response of structures. Based on the simulation, it is concluded that this model can be used for reasonably accurate explosive analysis of structures. The resulting information would be valuable for protecting structures under blast loads. 展开更多

Then, the crack propagation in an idealized an elastic-plastic finite element method. The variation dendritic two-phase AI-7%Si alloy was modeled using of crack growth driving force with crack extension was also demonstrated. It is found that the crack path is significantly influenced by the presence of α-phase near the crack tip, and the crack growth driving force varies drastically from place to place. The influence of temperature on the hydrogen diffusion behavior in X80 pipeline steel during stacking for slow cooling was studied using electrochemical penetration method, the temperature field and the hydrogen diffusion in this pipeline steel during stacking for slow cooling were simulated by ABAQUS finite element method (FEM) software. The results show that in this process there is a reciprocal relationship between the natural logarithm of hydrogen diffusion coefficient and temperature. The cooling rate decreases gradually with the increase of steel plate thickness. The hydrogen content is higher at high temperature (500-400 ℃) than that in low temperature region (300-100 ℃). The FEM simulation results are consistent with the experimental ones, and the model can be used to predict the hydrogen diffusion behavior in industrial production of X80 pipeline steel. 展开更多

In this paper we propose a finite element(FE) simulation method to predict tree motion in a wind field. Two FE tree models were investigated:One model was generated based on a realistic nature-looking geometric tree model, and the other was a symmetric model to investigate the influence of asymmetric material properties on tree motion. The vortex-induced vibration(VIV) theory is introduced to estimate the fluctuating wind force being exerted on tree stems and the fluid-structure interaction(FSI) analysis is also included in the simulation. The results indicate that asymmetric material properties result in the crosswind displacement of the investigated node and the main swaying direction deviation. The simulation reveals that under wind loading,a tree with leaves has much larger swaying amplitude along the wind direction and longer swaying period than a tree without leaves. However, the crosswind swaying amplitude is mainly due to branch interaction. The numerical simulation proved that the inter-action of tree branches can prevent dangerous swaying motion developing. 展开更多

The convergent ability under different prestress and different load types is investigated. Then the calculated deformations are compared with the experimental values. The results convince that the CI of FEM is suitable for the simulation of energy coupling and transformation mechanism of the GMM. Process technology of multiple cylindrical micro-pins by wire-electrical discharge machining (wire-EDM) and electrochemical etching was presented. A row of rectangular micro-columns were machined by wire-EDM and then machined into cylindrical shape by electrochemical etching. However, the shape of the multiple electrodes and the consistent sizes of the electrodes row are not easy to be controlled. In the electrochemical process, the shape of the cathode electrode determines the current density distribution on the anode and so the forming of multiple electrodes. This paper proposes a finite element method (FEM) to accurately optimize the electrode profile. The microelectrodes row with uniformity diameters with size from hundreds micrometers to several decades could be fabricated, and mathematical model controlling the shape and diameter of multiple microelectrodes was provided. Furthermore, a good agreement between experimental and theoretical results was confirmed. 展开更多

The tube hydroforming technology is used today in the mass production of lightweight components for the automotive industries due to its advantages over conventional stamping methods. A typical tube hydroforming process is usually a multiple forming operation process. The tube preforming and hydroforming process of an automobile subframe were analyzed by finite element method (FEM), and a parametric study was also carried out to obtain the effect of the forming parameters such as the die closing, the internal pressure and the axial feeding. The simulation results were also compared with industrial products in respect to the thickness distribution of some typical and key cross-sections. The study indicates that the internal pressure and the axial feeding should be set correctly and the multiple forming operations of tube hydroforming process can be simulated well by using the explicit code Ls-Dyna. 展开更多

A two-stage source reconstruction algorithm for bioluminescence tomography (BLT) is developed using hybrid finite element method (FEM). The proposed algorithm takes full advantages of linear and quadratic FEMs, which can be used to localize and quantify bioluminescent source accurately. In the first stage, a large permissible region is roughly determined and then iteratively evolved to reduce matrix dimension using efficient linear FEM. In the final stage, high-convergence quadratic FEM is applied to improve reconstruction result. Both numerical simulation and physical experiment are performed to evaluate the proposed algorithm. The possible crack length was set as the action effect and allowable crack length was set as the resistance in the limit state. The nonlinear FEM was used to obtain the crack length of the foundation surface of the gravity dam, and the linear response surface method based on the orthogonal test design method was used to calculate the reliability, providing a reasonable and simple method for calculating the reliability of the serviceability limit state. This article presents a micro-structure tensor enhanced elasto-plastic finite element(FE)method to address strength anisotropy in three-dimensional(3D)soil slope stability analysis. The gravity increase method(GIM)is employed to analyze the stability of 3D anisotropic soil slopes. The accuracy of the proposed method is first verified against the data in the literature. We then simulate the 3D soil slope with a straight slope surface and the convex and concave slope surfaces with a 90turning corner to study the 3D effect on slope stability and the failure mechanism under anisotropy conditions.Based on our numerical results, the end effect significantly impacts the failure mechanism and safety factor.Anisotropy degree notably affects the safety factor, with higher degrees leading to deeper landslides. For concave slopes, they can be approximated by straight slopes with suitable boundary conditions to assess their stability.Furthermore,a case study of the Saint-Alban test embankment A in Quebec,Canada,is provided to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed FE model. 展开更多

Owing to their excellent biocompatibility and potential for durability enhancement, polymeric heart valves(PHVs)are emerging as a promising alternative to traditional prostheses.Unlike conventional materials,PHVs can be manufactured under precise design criteria, enabling targeted performance improvements. This study introduces a geometric optimization strategy for enhancing the durability of PHVs.The finite element method(FEM)is combined with a dip-molding technique to develop a novel polymeric aortic valve with improved mechanical properties. The tri-leaflet geometry is parameterized using B-spline curves, and the maximum stress in the valve is reduced from 2.4802 to 1.7773 MPa using a multiobjective optimization algorithm NSGA-II(non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II).Pre-optimized and optimized valve prototypes were fabricated via dip-molding and evaluated during pulsatile-flow tests and accelerated wear tests. The optimized design meets the ISO 5840 standards, with an effective orifice area of 2.019 cm^(2),a regurgitant fraction of 5.693%,and a transvalvular pressure gradient of 7.576 mmHg.Moreover, the optimized valve maintained its structural integrity and functionality over 14 million cycles of the accelerated wear test, whereas the unoptimized valve failed after two million cycles. These findings confirm that the FEM-based geometric optimization method enhances both the mechanical performance and durability of PHVs. 展开更多

The hydro-mechanical responses of vegetated deposited slopes are complex and far from clear. On one hand, the soils in deposited slopes are typically poorly consolidated and widely graded, making them vulnerable to internal erosion during rainfall infiltration. On the other hand, vegetation plays a significant role in influencing the hydro-mechanical properties of the soil at the slope surface. This paper presents a coupled seepage-erosion model to investigate the rainfall-induced internal erosion process within vegetated deposited slopes and its impact on slope stability. The detailed seepage-erosion coupling processes were simulated for a series of 1D rooted soil columns with varying root distributions,as well as 2D vegetated layered slopes under both light and heavy rainfall conditions. The numerical results reveal that roots can significantly mitigate rainfall-induced internal erosion, even with shallow root lengths. However, their protective effect on the slope increases as the root density in the superficial soil layer increases.Transpiration can rapidly restore matric suction in the shallow soil during rain intervals, slowing the rainfall-induced seepage-erosion process and thereby increasing slope stability. However,in the absence of transpiration, roots may either accelerate or inhibit the seepage-erosion process, depending on the specific rainfall conditions. 展开更多
