Through analyzing the features of image schema considered by the authors as embodiment, recessiveness, sedimentation, logicality, scientificity, and dependency to cognitive metaphors and reviewing the definition of embodied cognition, the paper argues that image schema is an integration of bodily property and mental property, and accordingly a core and inseparable concept of embodied cognition by bridging body and mind. Image schema can help to explain how abstraction and inference generate from body-environment interactions, thus making the theory of embodied cognition more persuasive and reliable.展开更多

The paper firstly describes three distinctive features of embodied cognition. Furthermore, from the perspective of philosophical methodology, the paper outlines Vygotsky’s socio-cultural theory and his contributions to the development of cognitive science. Three basic themes of Vygotsky’s writings are specifically described: genetic forces as a foundation of the study of mind, social origin of higher mental functioning, and mediation of sign systems in inter-mental and intra-mental functioning. Against the background of Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, we further discuss the interface between embodied cognition and Vygotsky’s socio-cultural theory. It is claimed that bodily states and body-environment interactions are closely connected to sense-making. Embodied cognition should emphasize on the unity of body, mind, and cultural environment. Finally, the paper concludes with the influence of sociocultural theory on the study of embodied cognition.展开更多

In response to the journal’s feedback, we have enhanced the abstract to provide a more comprehensive overview of our study. Background: We trace the historical evolution of ideas, from the inception of cognitive science rooted in analytic philosophy to the groundbreaking contributions of Rodney Brooks and others in the field of artificial intelligence. We also explore the work of scholars such as Agre, Chapman, and Dreyfus, shedding light on the role of cognitive metaphor and the concept of the cognitive unconscious in shaping our understanding of embodied cognition. Purpose: Our study aims to shed light on the central theme that unites these various strands of thought—the rejection of the traditional, transcendental view of the subject in favor of the concept of an embodied subject. This embodied subject actively engages with its environment, shaping consciousness and cognition. This shift in perspective challenges classical epistemological theories and opens new avenues for inquiry. Method: We have conducted a comprehensive literature review to explore the historical development and key concepts in the field of embodied cognition, with a particular focus on the philosophical underpinnings and their integration into cognitive science. Results: Our examination of embodied cognition reveals that the mind is intimately connected to the body, with cognition emerging through interactions with the environment and perceptual experiences. This perspective challenges reductionist notions and demonstrates that mental states cannot be reduced to brain states alone. We also explore the relationship between functionalism and computational states of the brain, illustrating that mental states can be understood in the context of mathematical functions. Conclusion: In conclusion, this paper highlights the profound implications of embodied cognition and suggests that the mind is not isolated from the body but intimately tied to it. This perspective provides a fresh approach to the mind-body problem, emphasizing the role of the environment and perceptual experiences in shaping cognition. We invite further research into the practical applications of embodied cognition in fields like artificial intelligence, robotics, and psychology, and encourage investigations into the intersections between cognitive science and various branches of philosophy, offering valuable insights into the nature of consciousness and cognition. In essence, this study provides a comprehensive overview of the evolution and implications of embodied cognition, laying the groundwork for further research and fostering a deeper appreciation of the profound shifts in perspective that this theory brings to our understanding of the human mind.展开更多

Metaphor can be a bridge between the abstract concept of power and the body perception experience since embodiment serves as a basis for metaphorical thinking. Using E-PRIME experimentation, the present study investigated the features in vertical space representation of English power words of second language learners with different levels of proficiency. The statistics indicated that: 1) For such learners, the representation of power words would trigger the vertically spatial metaphor, which brings about "word- space" interaction effect. 2) Chinese English learners with different levels in L2 demonstrate stronger representation abilities in L1 than that of L2, regardless of their L2 proficiency level. 3) Learners' second language proficiency exerts influence upon the representation of the English power words.展开更多

In the East Asian languages Human beings are described as Inter-Beings in that they are enveloped by the topos of life and death. From breath to breath, our life is bound to the moments of emerging and vanishing, being and non-being in an essential unity. D6gen's philosophical thinking integrated this conception with the embodied cognition of both thinking and acting self. In the phenomenological point of view, Heidegger (1927; 1993) emphasizes Being as bound to fundamental substantiality, which borders at the Ab-grund, falling into nothingness. With D^gen, the unity-within-contrast of life and death is exemplified in our breathing, because it achieves the unity of body and cognition which can be called "corpus." In perfect contrast, the essential reflection for Heidegger is that of grasping the fundament of Being in the world, which represents the actualization of a Thinking-Being-Unity. The goal of this comparison is to fundamentally grasp what is the essentiality of being, life, and recognition (in Japanesejikaku f~ ~) bound to embodied cognition in our globalized world.展开更多

文摘The rise of foundation models has brought significant advances to artificial intelligence, especially in reasoning, commonsense understanding, and tool use. These capabilities, when integrated into agent systems, hold great promise for real-world applications such as vision-language navigation(VLN)and vision-language action(VLA).However, deploying such models in practice presents ongoing challenges, particularly in adapting and optimizing them across diverse and changing environments. This letter proposes a parallel deep foundation model(PDFM)framework to support continuous model evolution in cloud-edge-device systems. The framework establishes a co-evolution process between two complementary capabilities:embodied cognition, which reflects the model’s grounded understanding and task adaptation in physical systems, and analogical imagination, which enables creative exploration and capacity expansion in virtual environments.Through three core processes, learning and training, experiment and evaluation, and management and control, the system supports iterative refinement and dynamic interaction between virtual and real spaces. This enables general-purpose models to gradually converge toward domain-specific intelligence, supporting longterm, adaptive deployment.
文摘A meme can be understood as a unit of caltural information that spreads through imitation. This paper investigates Internet memes from the perspective of embodied cognitdion, drawing on three main frameworks:the simulation mechanism of the miror neuron system, the body-specifcity hypothesis, and multimodal embodiment.By analying representative examples of popular Internet memes, the study ains to clarify how memes are both triggered and re created. We argue that the trigering of memes relies on their"human-like"elements,which activate embodied simulations in the brain, allowing individuals to comprehend and resonate with the Internet meme while the phenomenon of meme re-creation emerges from the inherent ambiguity in individuals'perceptual interpretations, which enables the modification, reinterpretation, and recombination of meme elements across contexts. This study highlights the role of human embodiment in shaping both the reception and ongoing evolution of Internet memes in digital culture from a different perspective.
文摘Conceptual Metaphor Theory believes that sensorimotor information should be an integral element in representing abstract concepts and can be activated as the way of abstract conceptual processing. 3) Learners' second language proficiency exerts influence upon the representation of the English power words.
文摘Contrary to occidental philosophy, oriented to grasping and solidifying the principles of essential being (ontos on), Buddhism seeks to understand the aspect of our existence that experiences suffering in life. The goal of this comparison is to fundamentally grasp what is the essentiality of being, life, and recognition (in Japanesejikaku f~ ~) bound to embodied cognition in our globalized world.

文摘As a kind of widely circulated folk language,two-part allegorical saying(“xiehouyu”)carries the wisdom of the Chinese people and is characterized with humor and vivid imagery.Taking the two English translation versions of A Dream of Red Mansions as examples, this paper analyzes the English translation of two-part allegorical saying based on the core principle of Embodied Cognitive Linguistics(ECL),“Reality-Cognition-Language”,and explores how the English translation of two-part allegorical saying reflects the three dimensions of ECL.
文摘This paper explores how metaphors function as both cognitive blueprints and narrative building blocks, examining their role in shaping meaning through Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince.Drawing on Lakoff and Johnson’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory(CMT)and Kövecses’Extended Conceptual Metaphor Theory(ECMT),the study analyzes two central metaphors:the rose as“LOVE IS A LIVING ORGANISM”and the desert as“LONELINESS IS EMPTINESS.”The rose metaphor, instantiated through care-oriented language(e.g.,“waters,”“protects”),activates nurturance schemas rooted in embodied experiences, framing love as a fragile organism requiring cultivation.Cross-linguistic variations in translations further reveal how cultural values filter universal cognitive structures. The desert metaphor evolves from a symbol of existential void(“no houses,no people”)to an epistemological threshold, with its transformation marked by sensory richness(e.g.,“hidden water”),exemplifying Bakhtinian chronotopic metamorphosis.Neurocognitive evidence(e.g.,fMRI studies)confirms that metaphor processing engages both language and sensorimotor brain regions, bridging cognitive science and literary analysis. These findings highlight metaphor as a dynamic nexus of language, thought, and culture, with implications for education, where metaphor serves as a cognitive scaffold for abstract reasoning.

文摘Geosensing and social sensing as two digitalization mainstreams in big data era are increasingly converging toward an integrated system for the creation of semantically enriched digital Earth.Along with the rapid developments of AI technologies, this convergence has inevitably brought about a number of transformations. On the one hand,value-adding chains from raw data to products and services are becoming value-adding loops composed of four successive stages–Informing,Enabling,Engaging and Empowering(IEEE).Each stage is a dynamic loop for itself. On the other hand, the“human versus technology”relationship is upgraded toward a game-changing“human and technology”collaboration. The information loop is essentially shaped by the omnipresent reciprocity between humans and technologies as equal partners,co-learners and co-creators of new values. The paper gives an analytical review on the mutually changing roles and responsibilities of humans and technologies in the individual stages of the IEEE loop, with the aim to promote a holistic understanding of the state of the art of geospatial information science.Meanwhile, the author elicits a number of challenges facing the interwoven human-technology collaboration. The transformation to a growth mind-set may take time to realize and consolidate.Research works on large-scale semantic data integration are just in the beginning.User experiences of geovisual analytic approaches are far from being systematically studied. Finally, the ethical concerns for the handling of semantically enriched digital Earth cover not only the sensitive issues related to privacy violation, copyright infringement, abuse, etc.but also the questions of how to make technologies as controllable and understandable as possible for humans and how to keep the technological ethos within its constructive sphere of societal influence.

文摘The success of Chang’e-61,2 is a milestone of lunar exploration by China, being the first successful attempt in human history to collect samples from the far side of the Moon.To ensure collection efficiency and success of the mission, operators on the Earth needed to cooperate with the sample collection equipment on the Moon and finish the sample collection in less than a day.Embodied cognitive intelligence(ECI),which dynamically combines the advantage of human cognition with embodied intelligence, fitted this mission well.Experts on the Earth accumulated experience and knowledge to guide the design of the Chang’e probe and also conducted extensive simulation experiments for various challenges arising on the Moon.We used these accumulated data and experience along with knowledge to construct a cognitive map and then use the real-time data of Chang’e-6 in an embodied way by intelligently interacting with the environment.By using ECI,we successfully collected samples on the far side of the Moon in a fast, accurate, and robust way.
文摘Children with autism spectrum disorder(ASD)face major challenges in expressing emotions because they lack both verbal communication skills and social interaction abilities. The research investigates how dance/movement therapy(DMT)functions as a non-verbal arts education intervention to enhance emotional expression abilities in autistic children. The research utilizes a mixed-methods approach which includes structured dance-based interventions, quantitative assessments and qualitative observations based on the principles of embodied cognition and expressive arts educational methods.Participants took part in rhythm-based movement sessions which used symbolic guidance to help them develop emotional awareness, bodily control and social interaction skills. The quantitative analysis indicated observable post-intervention increases across key indicators of emotional expression, emotional regulation, and social interaction.Specifically, participants demonstrated higher frequencies of facial expression and expressive body movement during structured activities, alongside improved capacity to return to a calm state following emotional arousal.Measures related to social interaction showed increased responsiveness and initiation during group movement sessions.
