A new method for the determination of effective flange width under uniform load on simply supported box girder bridges considering shear lag effect is proposed in this paper. Based on the Symplectic Elasticity method, the flange slab of the box girder is simplified into a plane stress plate. Using equilibrium conditions of the plates, the Hamilton dual equations for top plate element is established. The analytical formulas of each plate element considering shear lag effect are derived. The closed polynomial effective width expression of flange slab under uniform load on the whole span length has been obtained. Through examples using the finite element method, the results obtained by the proposed method are examined and the accuracy of the proposed method is verified. 展开更多

Comparing ecological memory effects of the bimodal radial growth in the Qinling Mountains and Mediterranean forests

Intra-annual climatic variability plays a critical role in regulating wood formation dynamics during the growing season,particularly in seasonally arid regions—such as the Qinling Mountains,China,and Mediterranean forests—where trees exhibit bimodal radial growth patterns as an adaptive response to water stress.While these growth patterns reflect immediate climatic conditions,the role of ecological memory,specifically vegetation growth carryover(VGC)and lagged climate effects(LCEs),remains poorly quantified.We employed the Vaganov–Shashkin(VS)model to analyze intra-annual bimodal growth patterns in two regions and used a vector autoregressive model with impulse response functions to assess the duration and intensity of VGC and LCE on tree-ring growth and remote sensing vegetation indices(leaf area index(LAI)and gross primary productivity(GPP)).Our results revealed bimodal growth patterns with spring and autumn peaks,but the autumn peak occurred earlier in the Qinling Mountains(August–October)than in Mediterranean forests(late September–October).VGC exerted the strongest influence on tree-ring growth in the first year,diminishing significantly after eight years in both regions(p<0.01).Tree-ring growth exhibited positive LCE responses to precipitation and soil moisture but negative responses to temperature(p<0.05).Remote sensing indices(LAI and GPP)displayed stronger VGC effects in the Qinling Mountains than in Mediterranean forests.While both LAI and GPP responded positively to soil moisture,temperature-induced LCE was positive in the Qinling Mountains but negative in the Mediterranean forests(p<0.05).Overall,VGC was the dominant ecological memory effect in both regions.Our results suggest that coupling the VGC and LCE of multiple vegetation growth indicators at multiple scales has the potential to improve the accuracy of global dynamic vegetation models. 展开更多

A group of competitive people escaping through an exit could lead to the formation of a deadlock, which significantly increases the evacuation time. Such a phenomenon is called the faster-is-slower effect(FIS) and it has been experimentally verified in different systems of particles flowing through an opening. In this paper, the numerical simulation based on discrete element method(DEM) is adopted to study a group of highly competitive people through an exit of varying widths. The FIS effect is observed for a narrow exit whilst it is not observed for the exit wide enough to accommodate two people through it side-by-side. Experimental validation of such a phenomenon with humans is difficult due to ethical issues. The mouse is a kind of self-driven and soft-body creature and it exhibits selfish behaviour under stressed conditions.Particles flowing through an opening in different systems, such as pedestrian flow, animal flow, silo flow, etc. have similar characteristics. Therefore, experimental study is conducted by driving mice to escape through an exit of different widths at varying levels of stimulus. The escape time through a narrow exit(i.e., 2 cm) increases obviously with the increase of stimulus level but it is quite opposite to a wider exit(i.e., 4 cm). The FIS effect is avoided for an exit wide enough to accommodate two mice passing through it side-by-side. The study illustrates that FIF effect could be effectively prevented for an exit when its width is twice the size of particles. 展开更多

This paper presents a theoretical study of the pulse-width effects on the damage process of a typical bipolar transistor caused by high power microwaves(HPMs) through the injection approach.The dependences of the microwave damage power,P,and the absorbed energy,E,required to cause the device failure on the pulse width τ are obtained in the nanosecond region by utilizing the curve fitting method.A comparison of the microwave pulse damage data and the existing dc pulse damage data for the same transistor is carried out.By means of a two-dimensional simulator,ISE-TCAD,the internal damage processes of the device caused by microwave voltage signals and dc pulse voltage signals are analyzed comparatively.The simulation results suggest that the temperature-rising positions of the device induced by the microwaves in the negative and positive half periods are different,while only one hot spot exists under the injection of dc pulses.The results demonstrate that the microwave damage power threshold and the absorbed energy must exceed the dc pulse power threshold and the absorbed energy,respectively.The dc pulse damage data may be useful as a lower bound for microwave pulse damage data. 展开更多

This paper reports that the transmission of O6+ ions with energy of 150keV through capillaries in an uncoated Al2O3 membrane was measured, and agreements with previously reported results in general angular distribution of the transmitted ions and the transmission fractions as a function of the tilt angle well fitted to Gaussian-like functions were observed. Due tousing an uncoated capillary membrane, our φc is larger than that using a gold-coated one with a smaller value of Ep/q, which suggests a larger equilibrium charge Q∞ in our experiment. The observed special width variation with time and a larger width than that using a smaller Ep/q were qualitatively explained by using mean-field classical transport theory based on a classical-trajectory Monte Carlo simulation. 展开更多

An effective medium model with exponential valence and conduction band tail states is used to simulate the photovoltaic cell. The simulation result shows that the open circuit voltage depends Iinearly on the logarithm of the generation rate and the slope depends on the width of the valence band tail. Climatic implications in earlywood and latewood width indices of Chinese pine in north central China

Latewood width(LWW)indices of trees are considered a reliable proxy of summer precipitation in the Northern Hemisphere.However,the strong coupling and high correlation between earlywood width(EWW)and LWW indices often prevent registration of climate signals of the LWW index.In this study,328-year-long earlywood width and latewood width chronologies were developed from Chinese pine at two sites in the Hasi Mountains,north central China.The climate responses of these chronologies were analyzed and the LWW index used to derive sum-mer precipitation signals.Correlation analyses showed that LWW was particularly influenced by earlywood growth and recorded stronger climate signals of the previous year as EWW,rather than those of the current year with infrequent summer climate signals.However,after removing the effect of earlywood growth using a simple regression model,the adjusted LWW chronology(LWW_(adj))showed a strong relationship with July precipitation in dry years.This suggests that the LWW_(adj) chronology has the potential to be used to investigate long-term variability in summer precipitation in drought-limited regions. 展开更多

The effect of channel length and width on the large and small-signal parameters of the graphene field effect transistor have been explored using an analytical approach.In the case of faster saturation as well as extremely high transit frequency,the graphene field effect transistor shows outstanding performance.From the transfer curve,it is observed that there is a positive shift of Dirac point from the voltage of 0.15 V to 0.35 V because of reducing channel length from 440 nm to 20 nm and this curve depicts that graphene shows ambipolar behavior.Besides,it is found that because of widening channel the drain current increases and the maximum current is found approximately 2.4 mA and 6 mA for channel width 2μm and 5μm respectively.Furthermore,an approximate symmetrical capacitance-voltage(C-V)characteristic of the graphene field effect transistor is obtained and the capacitance reduces when the channel length decreases but the capacitance can be increased by raising the channel width.In addition,a high transconductance,that demands high-speed radio frequency(RF)applications,of 6.4 mS at channel length 20 nm and 4.45 mS at channel width 5μm along with a high transit frequency of 3.95 THz have been found that demands high-speed radio frequency applications. 展开更多

In this investigation square concrete footings have been used with dimensions (B × B × d) where (d) is footing depth and (B) is footing width (1, 1.5,2 m). Width of tie beam (b) has been taken equal to 0.25, 0.30, 0.40, 0.50 and 0.75 (m). Tie beam length (L) has been taken varying from B till 3B with same footing depth = 0.50 m. Effect of overlap stress on settlement as well as effect of tie beam width and length on settlement has been determined. Also, the efficiency of tie beam length and width has been obtained. An equation is presented to compute the overlap stress zone in case of existing tie beam. It is found that the settlement increases with increasing the length of tie beam which is clear after the effect of the overlap stresses zone. The width of overlap stress zone case of existing tie beam has been found to be equal to (1.6 -1.75) B. The settlement of footings decreases with increasing tie beam width. It is found that the settlement after the effect of the overlap stress zone increases with increasing the length of tie beam. 展开更多

基于铁磁金属Ni_(80)Fe_(20)与非磁性金属Pt异质结构的自旋太赫兹源,通过加载电流密度不同的电流,可实现对太赫兹波幅值的调制。通过引线键合将自旋太赫兹源与印刷电路板连接,通过电流源加载不同大小的电流,在太赫兹时域光谱系统内收集... 基于铁磁金属Ni_(80)Fe_(20)与非磁性金属Pt异质结构的自旋太赫兹源,通过加载电流密度不同的电流,可实现对太赫兹波幅值的调制。通过引线键合将自旋太赫兹源与印刷电路板连接,通过电流源加载不同大小的电流,在太赫兹时域光谱系统内收集自旋太赫兹源辐射的电磁信号。由于电流施加在自旋太赫兹源上会产生焦耳热,热量积累引起温度升高,铁磁材料的饱和磁化随温度的升高而降低。太赫兹波幅值受铁磁层饱和磁化的影响,幅值随外加电流的增大而减小,最终实现自旋太赫兹源的信号产生及电调制。在0.1~2.8 THz的频率范围内,实现了约59%的调制深度。通过理论推导,太赫兹发射幅值与外加电流密度的三次方呈线性相关,实验数据的曲线拟合结果证实了这一点。电调制这一方法有利于自旋太赫兹源的集成化发展,丰富了现有对自旋太赫兹源的调控手段,为理解自旋太赫兹源的工作原理提供了全新的方法。 展开更多

高压油缸往复密封的接触应力是体现密封性能的关键指标,增加接触应力则会增强密封性能,但也会增加摩擦力从而降低密封寿命。为全面评估高压油缸V形往复密封的性能和寿命,通过ABAQUS软件对往复密封进行有限元仿真研究,建立V形组合密封有... 高压油缸往复密封的接触应力是体现密封性能的关键指标,增加接触应力则会增强密封性能,但也会增加摩擦力从而降低密封寿命。为全面评估高压油缸V形往复密封的性能和寿命,通过ABAQUS软件对往复密封进行有限元仿真研究,建立V形组合密封有限元模型,分析工况压力及结构因素对密封区域接触应力分布的影响。结果表明:随着工况压力的增加,接触应力峰值和接触宽度呈现规律性增加,且均匀系数也随之上升,这表明较高的工况压力会导致接触应力分布更加不均匀,从而增加局部磨损风险;结构参数如宽度、唇高、开口厚度及角度等对接触应力分布和密封性能有着显著影响,其中接触宽度和均匀系数与宽度和唇口夹角成正比关系,而与唇高、厚度、开口厚度及外夹角成反比关系;增加开口厚度虽会导致最大有效接触应力降低,但可显著提高接触宽度和均匀系数。通过总结接触应力分布的特点,提出均匀系数、最大有效接触应力和有效接触宽度3种评估指标,以弥补单一评估指标可能忽略的局部易磨损问题。研究结果为密封结构优化设计提供了新方法。 展开更多

Thousand-grain weight (TGW) is a key component of grain yield in rice. This study was conducted to validate and fine-map qTGW1.2a, a quantitative trait locus for grain weight and grain size previously located in a 933.6-kb region on the long arm of rice chromosome 1. Firstly, three residual heterozygotes (RHs) were selected from a BC2F11 population of the indica rice cross Zhenshan 97 (ZS97)///ZS97//ZS97/Milyang 46. The heterozygous segments in these RHs were arranged successively in physical positions, forming one set of sequential residual heterozygotes (SeqRHs). In each of the populations derived, non-recombinant homozygotes were identified to produce near isogenic lines (NILs) comprising the two homozygous genotypes. The NILs were tested for grain weight, grain length and grain width. QTL analyses for the three traits were performed. Then, the updated QTL location was followed for a new run of SeqRHs identification-NIL development-QTL mapping. Altogether, 11 NIL populations derived from four sets of SeqRHs were developed and used. qTGW1.2a was finally delimitated into a 77.5-kb region containing 13 annotated genes. In the six populations segregating this QTL, which were in four generations and were tested across four years, the allelic direction of qTGW1.2a remained consistent and the genetic effects were stable. For TGW, the additive effects ranged from 0.23 to 0.38 g and the proportions of phenotypic variance explained ranged from 26.15% to 41.65%. These results provide a good foundation for the cloning and functional analysis of qTGW1.2a. 展开更多

The spectral linewidth of a 64-emitter laser-diode array is effectively suppressed by using a volume Bragg grating(VBG)based external cavity.At a maximal driven current of 90 A,the device produces a cw output of 80W with 1.2 W/A slope efficiency and 0.1 nm spectral linewidth(FWHM)centered at 780 nm.The power extraction efficiency reaches 90%as compared with the free running case.The central wavelength of the narrowed spectrum is tuned over a 0.3 nm range by adjusting the VBG's temperature.The absorption of 45%laser radiation by a 5-mm-long rubidium vapor cell with 150 Torr ethane and 450 Torr helium at 383 K is demonstrated. 展开更多

Based on the elastic-plastic, large-deformation finite element method, burst capacity of steel pipeline with longitudinal corrosion defect subjected to internal pressure is studied. The appropriate stress-based criterion is used to predict the failure pressure of finite element model of corroded pipeline under internal pressure. By considering the pipe steel grades and geometries of corrosion defects, a series of finite element analyses is conducted. The effects of corrosion depth, length and width on burst capacity are also discussed. A specific failure pressure solution for the assessment of corrosion defects in moderate-to-high strength pipeline is proposed on the base of numerical results. The failure pressures predicted by the proposed method are in better agreement with the experimental results than the results by the other methods. 展开更多

This paper presents an experimental study investigating factors influencing the effective width of steel reinforced concrete (SRC) column-steel beam joints of building in order to calculate its resisting moment.Five 1/2 scaled interior SRC column-steel beam joint specimens were made with considering parameters such as beam flange width,beam depth and SRC column width.One directional increasing moment was applied to the joint by acting forces to each ends of beam and the structural behavior of joint was studied.And previous design method suggested by Deierlein was reviewed and a modified equation was proposed from the analysis of test result.Test result indicated that the equation to calculate the effective width in Deierlein’s design method didn’t consider effectively the influence caused by the variation of beam depth so that a modified equation was suggested and the validation of it was confirmed in this paper. 展开更多

Background:Urban remnant forests are embedded in urban areas and are threatened directly and indirectly by urbanization.The direct effects(e.g.,loss of area)have been well studied.However,knowledge about the indirect influence of urbanization through edge effects on the biodiversity in remnant forests is limited.Methods:In this study,we surveyed woody plant species in 72 plots in nine remnant forest patches in Guiyang,China.We examined the influences of urbanization and edge effects on the species diversity and composition of woody plants in remnant forests.We compared alpha diversities and quantified compositional dissimilarities in interior and edge sites at different levels of urbanization.We also measured the niche width of the recorded plant species and assessed whether high levels of urbanization and edge effects increased the number of generalist species.Results and conclusions:The Shannon index,the Simpson index and the Pielou index of adult trees were lowest in the edge habitat under high levels of urbanization.Significant differences in the Shannon index and the Simpson index of sapling/seedling were detected between interior and edge sites under low urbanization.The edge effects on the species composition of adult trees were intensified by high levels of urbanization.Woody plant species with wide niche widths were more abundant at edge sites under high levels of urbanization.Therefore,we recommend that urban expansion surrounding remnant patches should be strictly controlled to alleviate edge effects on biodiversity. 展开更多
