Here we employ(100)[011] orientated planar-front seeds using directional solidification and reveal the fundamental origins of the degenerate pattern growth in an Al-4.5 wt% Cu alloy. We find that the spacing of the tip-splitting(λ) in the degenerate of the alloys followed a power law,λ∝V^-0.5, and the frequency(f) of the splitting was related to the growth velocity(V) by f ∝V^1.5. The dimensionless growth direction(θ/θ0) increased monotonously and approached 0.6 with faster velocity, attributed to its anisotropy in the interface kinetics. Once growth velocity exceeded a threshold, two types of pattern transitions from degenerate to regular dendrites were proposed. One of them exhibited a random and chaotic mode and the other underwent a rotation in growth direction.展开更多

In the early 2000 s, urban agglomerations became new geographical units for participating in global competition and the international division of labor, and China has spent the past decade promoting them as the main spaces for pushing forward its new form of urbanization. The convening of the first Central Work Conference on Urbanization and the National New-type Urbanization Plan(2014–2020) further defined the status of urban agglomerations as the main players in promoting China's new type of national urbanization. Nevertheless, urban agglomerations remain a weak link in Chinese academia and are in urgent need of study. Only 19 articles on the theme of urban agglomerations were published in the journal Acta Geographica Sinica between 1934 and 2013, accounting for only 0.55% of all articles written during that period. Not only are there very few, they have also all been published within a relatively short period of time, with the first having been published only 10 years ago. The studies are also concentrated among only a few authors and institutions, and research is aimed at national requirements but is rather divergent. Even so, some studies on urban agglomerations have played a leading role and made important contributions to dictating the overall formation of urban agglomerations nationwide. Specifically, a proposed spatial pattern for urban agglomerations formed the basic framework for the spatial structure of China's urban agglomerations and guided the government to make urban agglomerations the main urban pattern when promoting the new type of urbanization; proposed standards and technologies for identifying the spatial dimensions of urban agglomerations played an important role in defining the scope of national urban agglomerations; a series of studies in the area of urban agglomerations spurred more in-depth and practical studies in the field; and studies on issues related to the formation and growth of urban agglomerations provided warnings on the future selection and development of urban agglomerations. Taking the progress and results of these studies as a foundation, the foci of selecting and developing urban agglomerations in China are as follows: to be problem-oriented and profoundly reflect on and review new problems exposed in the selection and development of urban agglomerations; to concentrate on urban agglomerations and lay importance on the formation of a new “5+9+6” spatial structure for China's urban agglomerations; to rely on urban agglomerations and promote the formation of a new pattern of national urbanization along the main axes highlighted by urban agglom-erations; to be guided by national strategic demand and continue to deepen understanding of major scientific issues in the course of the formation and development of urban agglomerations, including studying the resource and environmental effects of high-density urban agglomerations, scientifically examining resource and environmental carrying capacities of high-density urban agglomerations, creating new management systems and government coordination mechanisms for the formation and development of urban agglomerations, studying the establishment of public finance systems and public finance reserve mechanisms for urban agglomerations, and studying and formulating technical specifications for urban agglomeration planning and standards for delineating urban agglomeration boundaries.展开更多

The success of human authentication depends on high speed and accuracy. This paper proposed an integrated approach of personal authentication using texture based Finger Knuckle Print (FKP) recognition in multiresolution domain. FKP images are rich in texture patterns. Recently, many texture patterns are proposed for biometric feature extraction. Hence, it is essential to review whether Local Binary Patterns or its variants perform well for FKP recognition. In this paper, Local Directional Pattern (LDP), Local Derivative Ternary Pattern (LDTP) and Local Texture Description Framework based Modified Local Directional Pattern (LTDF_MLDN) based feature extraction in multiresolution domain are experimented with Nearest Neighbor and Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) Classifier for FKP recognition. Experiments were conducted on PolYU database. The result shows that LDTP in Contourlet domain achieves a promising performance. It also proves that Soft classifier performs better than the hard classifier.展开更多

By introducing a set of critical constraint conditions into the optimization model, we can directly quantize the amplitude distribution instead of replacing it with a continuous equivalent aperture antenna. The mutual coupling and the element patterns are also considered in the quantization synthesis. Finally, some array simulation results are given to show the effectiveness of the method.展开更多

Recently however, declining Populus euphratica forests have failed to regenerate by seeding, while the spatial pattern and utility of their seed rains are unclear. In this study, we designed a model to simulate seed rains based on field investigations by fitting our observations to a normal distribution and testing the model with data from three years, with ac- ceptable results. We examined the simulated results of dispersed seeds patterns on the classification of three factors, i.e., density of Sophora alopecuroides, surface soil moisture and surface soil salinity. The results of seed rain simulation show that over 70% of seeds were dispersed and confined to each of the three plots where their mother trees located. The proportion of 3:7 seeds dispersed inside and outside each plots remained largely unaltered. The differences in the amounts of dispersed seed among the different levels of each of the factors were not significant, although the distributing pattern of P. euphratica in each plot varied. Therefore, in P. eu- phratica communities, the amount of seed does not become a constraint in subsequent germination, although the surface environment does. We conclude that successful P. euphratica seed regeneration relies on less than 30% of seeds dispersed over longer distance to colonize favorable growth habitats.展开更多

Since damage can be directly associated to displacements, seismic design with consideration of displacement seems to be logical. In this study, simple formulae to estimate the peak floor displacement patterns of eccentrically braced frames(EBFs) at different performance levels subjected to earthquake ground motions are proposed. These formulae are applicable in a PBSD and especially in direct displacement-based design(DDBD). Parametric study is conducted on a group of 30 EBFs under a set of 15 far field and near field accelerograms which they scaled to different amplitudes to adapt various performance levels. The results of thousands of nonlinear dynamic analyses of EBFs have been post-processed by nonlinear regression analysis in order to recognize the major parameters that influence the peak displacement pattern of these frames. Results show that suggested displacement patterns have relatively good agreement with those acquired by an exact nonlinear dynamic analysis.展开更多

In this paper, we apply a novel model feature structure to represent Chinese semantic relations, which is formalized as "recursive directed graph". Feature structure facilitates a richer Chinese semantic information extraction when compared with dependency structure. The results show that using recursive directed graph is more suitable for extracting Chinese complex semantic relations.展开更多

Direct searches that need no recourse to explicit derivatives are revived and become popular since the new century. In order to get a deep insight into this field, some notes on the direct searches for non-smooth optimization problems are made. The global convergence vs. local convergence and their influences on expected solutions for simulation-based stochastic optimization are pointed out. The sufficient and simple decrease criteria for step acceptance are analyzed, and why simple decrease is enough for globalization in direct searches is identified. The reason to introduce the positive spanning set and its usage in direct searches is explained. Other topics such as the generalization of direct searches to bound, linear and non-linear constraints are also briefly discussed.展开更多
