Interface management on high speed two:managing multiple complex interfaces in the design and construction of high speed railway infrastructure in the United Kingdom

Purpose-Interface management is the process of managing communications,responsibilities and coordination of project parties,phases or physical entities which are dependent on one another.Interface management is a crucial part of managing any construction project-but particularly important for high-speed railway projects that often have several contractual parties and stakeholders,very long project timelines and huge upfront cost overlays.This paper discusses how various project interfaces were managed during the design and construction of the civil engineering infrastructure for the High Speed Two(HS2)project in the United Kingdom.Design/methodology/approach-The paper uses the case study methodology.Key interfaces on the HS2 project are grouped into various categories and the paper discusses how they were managed within the Area North Integrated Project Team(IPT)of the HS2 project made up of contractor Balfour Beatty VINCI(BBV),the Mott MacDonald SYSTRA Design Joint Venture(DJV)and client HS2 Ltd.3 different case studies drawn from across the IPT are used,each of them highlighting different interfaces and how these interfaces were managed.Findings-The paper shows how innovative technical designs and modern methods of construction were used to address some of the unique and peculiar challenges of designing a brand-new railway in the United Kingdom.Addressing the contrasting and often competing requirements of different stakeholders,coupled with challenging physical constraints of the very limited land available for the project and the use of a rarely used Act of Parliament in the delivery of the project required different approach to interface management.Collaboration and proactive stakeholder engagement are necessary for successful interface management on megaprojects.The authors posit that adopting an integrated approach to engineering and construction management is an essential ingredient for the successful delivery of high-speed railway projects.Originality/value-With many high-speed railway projects around the world coming up in the next few years,understanding the context and challenges for each country will help engineering and design managers adopt appropriate approaches for their projects.The lessons learned on the HS2 project are also transferable to other mega infrastructure projects with complex project interfaces. 展开更多

The lean product development process that changes the shell, defined under the light of the variables created by the competitive conditions, is today measured by the value flow efficiency and the global market spread of the final product. Consequently, the lean product development approach, which aims to identify and purify all the wastes that do none value or create value to the system or cause burdens in the new product development process, is shaped by step-by-step approvals in the flow. In the main automotive industry company practices within the scope of the research (3 national, 3 international), the beginning of the concept of lean in design is to define and optimize the steps in the product development process under the value stream map. Therefore, the product function for which the customer has paid for, the function of the new product or the physical structure used to meet the needs in question, the comfort, life, experience, innovations of the scope that constitute the new product concept are planned and verified and implemented in the simplified automotive design stages at the beginning of the lean product development process. The research is modelled on the determination of steps that do not create added value together with the points where the flow circuits’ or stems, the process is devalued, the interdisciplinary holistic studies intensify, the information and delay begin and end in the sequential and simultaneous design validation step transition stages, which are examined under the lean approach. As a visual and virtual tool that enables the elaboration of nominal values such as the total duration of the design verification stages and the influence of interdisciplinary stakeholders or the test level of the product design with the new product added, it reveals the value flow or losses. The casebased design (CBD) is a methodology to followmankind's problem solving strategy, one of its aims isto realize the design knowledge reuse. This methodhas been used in many fields, but there are still somedifficulties that hindered its application. The first isabout the difficulty in the formalization of a designcase, especially representation of some experiencesthat was the weakness in former researches. The second is about the bottleneck of knowledge-acqulsition that results in lacking enough knowledge in the modification process.which may lead to unreliable results when automatic inference is applied.We proposed that modification should be done not by machines but by designers while the inference results can be used as a suggestion to designers.In this manner we integrated both case.based and rule-based methodologies together.The third difficulty relates to case evolution and customization.former CBD systems suffered from this problem.We proposed an agile case-template technique that overcomes the problem perfectly.To make users be able to define their own similarity rules we allow users to choose different parameter weights and fuzzy subjection functions of numeric parameters.The approach of this paper has been applied to an enterprise and the system is built on the Web. 展开更多

The global automotive industry is giving a difficult and common test in order to create advanced life models in the near future plans or scenarios that include current autonomous vehicle technologies. Therefore, the main purpose of the research is to comparatively evaluate the impact of autonomous vehicle technologies, which are newly included in the automotive manufacturing industry under sustainable competition, on lean product development processes, value acquisition and preservation, in different organizational structures in the approach. Although mergers or brand acquisitions in the global automotive industry create joint R & D (Research Development) or joint new P & D (Product Development) process structures for the development of autonomous vehicle technologies, heavy competition continues in the market. These new processes create different needs for the merger and partnership of the renewed traffic infrastructures under national and international regulations, and for the implementation of the new autonomous life model. Firm and brand marriages, mergers or acquisitions in today’s automotive industry have ensured the high diffusion of lean product development processes under the stream of value creation or preservation carried out specific to the company under competition. Brand mergers in automotive industry companies struggling to survive under high competition create new work disciplines, professions, and engineering flow steps in lean product development processes. However, lean product development processes driven by technological innovation under simplification have resulted in the integration of parts and systems within the autonomous vehicle design structure, as well as creating new interdisciplinary value streams or different stakeholders. Therefore, the research revealed the significant effects of lean product development processes on the value stream in the automotive industry, on the mixed and lean product development process structure formed by new or existing vehicle systems (conventional vehicle) under the penetration of each existing and new discipline. This research compares the efficient operation steps of the process stakeholders in the autonomous vehicle design parts or systems containing innovation and new technology together with the value stream in the lean product development process, and the new process stakeholder’s business-oriented global and local automotive industry companies. New autonomous vehicle technologies, together with their unique software, hardware and development analysis, have been involved in the lean product development process with their interdisciplinary studies or expertise. Therefore, the study firstly focused on the technologies in environmental use together with the new basic features of autonomous vehicles, and then examined in depth the new or existing disciplines and interdisciplinary basic structure that these innovations affect under the value stream in the lean product development process. In addition, micro-level results and recommendations were shared, shedding light on how autonomous vehicle levels will create changes in the new product development process. 展开更多

Numerous service design methods have been developed for designing and developing products. However, owing to the limited availability of useful tools in IT service design, these methods are ineffective. This study proposes an innovative three-dimensional method for designing IT services. The proposed method considers user requirements, an organization's business requirements, service providers' management requirements as well as the decision-making criteria of management representatives to ensure a smooth implementation of a designed IT service. Using this method, a prototype system to improve campus wireless local area network services was developed and tested at a university in Taiwan. The prototype system reduced the need for repetitive authentication and the time required to solve service problems and address user complaints. In addition, the service design team observed an approximately 70% reduction in project cycle time. The proposed method provided a systematic means to organize the design and implementation of IT services. 展开更多

A framework that integrates the fragmented elements of concept derivation,processing,and translation is developed and discussed.This framework aims to consolidate the divergent components of design conception into a comprehensive system that facilitates design conceptualization,initiation,and integration of various concept evolution phases,components,layers,and aspects.Accordingly,the framework describes a comprehensive approach based on a series of alternating divergence/convergence cycles.Subsequently,the approach encom-passes a concept evolution process,derivation methods,aggregation/segregation technique,translation channels,and development layers.Each of the major divergent phases of the framework consists of eight parts.Furthermore,the skills and tasks associated with framework implementation are mapped into the main processing phases.The scope of this study is architectural design in higher education and practice.To demonstrate its applicability,the framework is implemented and illustrated by a case study.Reflections about its implementation and limitations are reported and discussed. 展开更多
