Cancer pain is one of the most prevalent and debilitating symptoms in patients with advanced malignancies, arising from multifactorial mechanisms involving peripheral, central, and systemic pathways.Conventional analgesics, including opioids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, are often limited by their insufficient efficacy, tolerance, and risk of dependence.Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM),characterized by its multi-component,multi-target,and systemic regulatory properties, has shown promising potential in cancer pain management. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the clinical classification and underlying mechanisms of cancer pain(including nerve infiltration, dysregulation of inflammatory mediators and ion channels, central sensitization,neuro-immune crosstalk, metabolic reprogramming, and gut-brain axis impairment),as well as the analgesic effects of representative TCM agents in cancer pain management. For example, bioactive components such as tetrahydroberberine,levo-tetrahydropalmatine,and piperine exert analgesic effects, thereby improving the quality of life of patients by inhibiting inflammatory cascades, regulating neurotransmitter systems, and preserving neural integrity.Commonly used preclinical models, including bone cancer pain, pancreatic cancer pain, and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy models, are summarized for their utility in mechanistic studies and efficacy evaluations. This review also discusses the current limitations of clinical evidence, such as small sample sizes, short follow-up periods, and limited translation from animal models, alongside major challenges in standardization, mechanistic elucidation, and clinical trial design.Future directions should focus on precise pain phenotyping, integrated multi-target interventions, rigorous efficacy safety validation, and innovations in drug delivery to facilitate the standardization and global adoption of TCM in cancer pain management. 展开更多

Does traditional Chinese economic thought possess genuine analytical rigor? This question lies at the heart of any serious evaluation of its theoretical value and historical significance. It also matters for understanding how best to preserve, build on its remarkable achievements, and develop its intellectual legacy.Critics such as Schumpeter and Taylor have long argued that the economic reasoning found in ancient China cannot compare with that of classical Greece or medieval Europe.Yet this view often reflects the narrow assumptions of mainstream economics, defining analysis almost entirely in terms of market exchange. As a result,it tends to overlook traditions built around statecraft, governance, and the management of economic order.A careful re-examination and Sino-Western comparative analysis of key thinkers-including Mencius,Guanzi, and Sima Qian-tells a different story.Rooted in China’s distinctive cultural and philosophical heritage, traditional Chinese economic thought not only contains the analytical dimensions(as defined by Schumpeter)but also displays a broader and more diverse set of economic reasoning.Notably, its systematic depth and intellectual precision were,in many respects, remarkably advanced. Therefore, advancing the construction of a Chinese school of economics in the new era under the framework of the“Second Integration”,i.e.,integrating the basic tenets of Marxism with China’s fine traditional culture, should, and indeed can draw essential insights from this analytical tradition. 展开更多

Environment serves as the pivotal medium to produce fermented food, with fluctuations in environmental factors exerting a profound impact on the modulation of fermentation microbial communities.Such shifts are crucial for the distinctiveness of fermented food flavor and the variability in quality.Chinese liquor(Baijiu)is one of the typical representatives of spontaneous fermented food.In this review, the multifaceted relationship between regional environmental attributes and the fermentation dynamics of Baijiu was examined, with a spotlight on the strong-flavor,sauce-flavor,and light-flavor varieties. It reveals the influence of regional environmental factors and brewing environmental factors on microbial function and metabolism, which results in the formation of unique flavor characteristics of Baijiu. The 9 main factors affecting the microecology of Baijiu fermentation were further explored, including environmental sensitivity, microbial interactions, biogeographic patterns, and key abiotic factors such as temperature and humidity.Environmental factor management is crucial for controlling microbial community in fermentation.Intelligent detection of the fermentation system is combined with artificial intelligence to realize the digitalization of Baijiu fermentation, with a view to further studying the environmental mechanism or quantitative control relationship of natural fermentation, improving the environmental stability of natural fermentation, and promoting the mechanization and intelligence of fermentation production. 展开更多

This paper undertakes a systematic combing of the development of research on integrating Chinese culture into foreign language education in China from the 1980s to 2025,dividing it into three stages:cultural attachment, cultural compensation, and cultural symbiosis, and reveals the logical shift of the research from the dominance of target language culture to the construction of the subjectivity of Chinese culture.Through quantitative and qualitative analysis of 435 CSSCI papers, three core themes are extracted:what to integrate, why to integrate, and how to integrate. This paper critically analyzes three pairs of contradictions:the imbalance between instrumentality and humanism, the separation of national narrative and individual expression, and the disconnection between traditional inheritance and modern transformation. It is proposed that future research should reconstruct the educational logic based on the Chinese context, integrate the national and individual dimensions, and build a dialogue mechanism between tradition and modernity,so as to provide theoretical and practical reference for the construction of a foreign language education system with Chinese characteristics. 展开更多

Mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)are pluripotent stem cells isolated from human tissues.Due to their strong self-renewal capacity, pluripotency, and immunomodulatory properties,MSCs have garnered significant attention in cell therapy and tissue regeneration. However, cellular senescence induced by replication or external stimuli can impair MSC proliferation and differentiation, making it crucial to develop interventions that delay or reverse the senescence process. From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, senescence stems from spleen and stomach deficiency, kidney deficiency, and related factors;thus, medicines that tonify the kidney and promote Qi and blood circulation play vital roles in anti-senescence therapy.Chinese medicine, characterized by low toxicity and multi-target,multi-functional properties, has become prominent in anti-senescence research. This paper examines the MSC senescence process by discussing its causes, characteristics, and mechanisms, then summarizes how active ingredients in herbal medicines and natural compounds reverse MSC senescence, facilitating the discovery of additional anti-senescence Chinese medicines and their effective components. 展开更多

The critically endangered Chinese Crested Tern(CThalasseus bernsteini,CCT)and its common flocking companion, the Greater Crested Tern(Thalasseus bergii,GCT),have been the focus of targeted recovery efforts in the Jiushan Archipelago of Zhejiang Province,China since 2013.To evaluate the long-term effectiveness of these measures and address key knowledge gaps in population dynamics and migration ecology,we analyzed ten years(2015-2024)of banding and citizen science data, comprising 116 CCT and 3501 GCT resighting records. We estimated survival rates using both directly derived survival rate(based on resighting rate after two years)and Cormack-Jolly-Seber modeling, and examined migration connectivity and climate risks. Results showed robust juvenile survival:modeled survival for the tern chick population was lower in the first two years(63.9±12.0%)but exceeded 78%thereafter.This was also supported by resighting rate after two years:CCT 77.27%,GCT70.42%.A key divergence in post-breeding migration was identified:CCT moves northward to stopover sites such as Nantong,Rizhao, and Jiaozhou Bay,whereas GCT migrates southward.Climate data confirmed that northern stopover sites do not pose higher storm risks, indicating that CCT's northward migration is not a population liability.Furthermore, connectivity among breeding islands in Zhejiang and the Matsu Archipelago reveals a nascent coastal breeding network along China's coast. These findings underscore the importance of protecting both the northern migration route and the breeding island network to ensure full life-cycle conservation of CCT. 展开更多

Background: The human gut microbiome is an important target for disease treatment and prevention. Various microbial species within the complex ecosystem of the microbiome have been shown to play important roles in disease. Identification of bioactive materials capable of altering the abundances of these species both safely and effectively is a major goal in microbiome research. Many traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) have been reported to affect the composition of the gut microbiome. Here, we summarize studies that have used TCMs to alter the gut microbiome and discuss the response relationship between TCMs and gut microbial species. Methods: We searched the PubMed, Web of Science, and Knowledge Network databases using the terms “traditional Chinese medicine,” “gut microbiome,” and specific system disease names (endocrine, immune, nervous, cardiovascular, and digestive). Studies were excluded if irrelevant or if the experimental procedures were unclear. Results: TCMs have been reported to affect a wide range of gut microbial taxa spanning major phyla, including Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Verrucomicrobiota, Actinobacteria, and Fusobacteria. In all, 54 TCMs including compounds and extracts have been tested in rodents and 30 have been examined in human trials. Almost all studies have reported positive results in regulating the gut microbiome as well as modulating corresponding phenotypes, spanning diseases of the endocrine, immune, nervous, cardiovascular, and digestive systems. Gut species, including Akkermansia, Bacteroides, Fusobacterium, Faecalibacterium, and E. coli, were found to be regulated by 19 TCMs. A network was constructed to visualize the interactions between TCMs and these taxa. Conclusion: There exists a complex and close relationship between intestinal microflora and diseases. Sufficient experimental data and studies have proved that the imbalance of intestinal microflora affects health by mediating metabolism, immune regulation, inflammation and signal transduction. Many characteristic alterations of intestinal microflora are positively correlated with diseases, so intestinal microflora has become a potential risk index and treatment target for many diseases. Many TCMs affect the relative abundances of microbial species in the gut, and therefore may be useful for modulating the gut microbiome. This review provides a reference for prioritizing candidate TCMs from the enormous repertoire of such medicines to test which specific gut microbes are targeted. 展开更多

Tumor growth depends on neoangiogenesis, and current anti-angiogenic therapies face limitations owing to side effects and drug resistance.Traditional Chinese medicines(TCM)have shown potential to inhibit tumor angiogenesis owing to their multi-component and multi-target properties. This review focuses on the mechanisms of action of TCM monomers(e.g.,curcumin,tanshinone IIA,and ginsenoside)through the modulation of key pathways, such as HIF-1α,VEGF/VEGFRs,and Notch signaling, and explores their modulatory effects on the tumor microenvironment(e.g.,tumor-associated macrophage polarization).Despite the low toxicity and multi-targeting advantages of TCM,their clinical translation is still limited by low bioavailability and standardization difficulties. In this review,we further analyze the role of modern approaches, such as nanocarriers(liposomes, polymer nanoparticles,metal-coordinated nanomaterials, and plant exosome-like vesicles),in overcoming these bottlenecks and propose a strategy of combining TCM with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy to overcome drug resistance and enhance therapeutic efficacy.By integrating traditional wisdom with cutting-edge technologies,anti-angiogenesis research in TCM is expected to contribute to the development of safer and more effective individualised cancer treatment. 展开更多

Objective To develop a depression recognition model by integrating the spirit-expression diagnostic framework of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)with machine learning algorithms. The proposed model seeks to establish a TCM-informed tool for early depression screening, thereby bridging traditional diagnostic principles with modern computational approaches. Methods The study included patients with depression who visited the Shanghai Pudong New Area Mental Health Center from October 1,2022 to October 1,2023,as well as students and teachers from Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine during the same period as the healthy control group.Videos of 3–10 s were captured using a Xiaomi Pad 5,and the TCM spirit and expressions were determined by TCM experts(at least 3 out of 5 experts agreed to determine the category of TCM spirit and expressions).Basic information, facial images, and interview information were collected through a portable TCM intelligent analysis and diagnosis device, and facial diagnosis features were extracted using the Open CV computer vision library technology.Statistical analysis methods such as parametric and non-parametric tests were used to analyze the baseline data,TCM spirit and expression features, and facial diagnosis feature parameters of the two groups,to compare the differences in TCM spirit and expression and facial features.Five machine learning algorithms, including extreme gradient boosting(XGBoost),decision tree(DT),Bernoulli naive Bayes(BernoulliNB),support vector machine(SVM),and k-nearest neighbor(KNN)classification, were used to construct a depression recognition model based on the fusion of TCM spirit and expression features. The performance of the model was evaluated using metrics such as accuracy, precision, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curve(AUC).The model results were explained using the Shapley Additive exPlanations(SHAP).Results A total of 93 depression patients and 87 healthy individuals were ultimately included in this study. There was no statistically significant difference in the baseline characteristics between the two groups(P>0.05).The differences in the characteristics of the spirit and expressions in TCM and facial features between the two groups were shown as follows.(i)Quantispirit facial analysis revealed that depression patients exhibited significantly reduced facial spirit and luminance compared with healthy controls(P<0.05),with characteristic features such as sad expressions, facial erythema, and changes in the lip color ranging from erythematous to cyanotic.(ii)Depressed patients exhibited significantly lower values in facial complexion L,lip L,and a values, and gloss index, but higher values in facial complexion a and b,lip b,low gloss index, and matte index(all P<0.05).(iii)The results of multiple models show that the XGBoost-based depression recognition model, integrating the TCM“spirit-expression”diagnostic framework, achieved an accuracy of 98.61%and significantly outperformed four benchmark algorithms—DT,BernoulliNB,SVM,and KNN(P<0.01).(iv)The SHAP visualization results show that in the recognition model constructed by the XGBoost algorithm, the complexion b value, categories of facial spirit, high gloss index, low gloss index, categories of facial expression and texture features have significant contribution to the model. Conclusion This study demonstrates that integrating TCM spirit-expression diagnostic features with machine learning enables the construction of a high-precision depression detection model, offering a novel paradigm for objective depression diagnosis. 展开更多
