Herein, nanosized Hf_(6)Ta_(2)O_(17) encapsulated graphite flakes were firstly constructed using the sol-gel method, then deposited on the surface of carbon/carbon(C/C)composites by plasma spraying technique to prolong their service span in critical environments.Nanoindentation results affirmed the active influ-ence of graphite flakes on elevating the toughness of the Hf_(6)Ta_(2)O_(17) coating.Besides, after being exposed to the oxyacetylene torch with a peak temperature of about 2000℃,the sample achieved near zero ab-lation(0.06 mg/s),meanwhile its porosity and mass ablation rate showed 39.5%and 60.0%reduction when compared to pure Hf_(6)Ta_(2)O_(17) sample.During exposure, the external Hf_(6)Ta_(2)O_(17) served as an oxy-gen barrier for internal graphite flakes, inversely internal graphite flakes provided a“pinning”effect on external Hf_(6)Ta_(2)O_(17),which accounted for its exceptional ablation performance. This work offers a new insight into the design of surface modification of C/C composites and other high-temperature structural materials. 展开更多

Silicon-based anode is a promising candidate for all-solid-state batteries(ASSBs).However,it must be further improved because of its tremendous volume change. In this study, various interface treatment strategies for SiO/carbon composite anodes in ASSBs were investigated using a multiphysics modeling framework.By evaluating the effects of active(carbon)and inactive coating materials,as well as the geometric and mechanical parameters, this research provides critical insights into optimizing their electrochemical performance and mechanical stability.Computational results indicate that carbon coatings can greatly enhance lithiation kinetics by regulating the interfacial electrochemical potential gradients, reducing the residual lithium concentration, and homogenizing the lithium-ion distribution compared with uncoated or inactive-coated configurations. In addition, thinner carbon coatings further improve capacity retention and stress management by balancing shorter lithium diffusion pathways with mitigated interfacial stress accumulation.Despite their ability to mechanically stabilize the anode, inactive coatings exhibit tradeoffs between lithium transport kinetics and stress modulation, with optimal performance achieved at lower Young’s moduli.Mechanical analyses highlight distinct failure mechanisms at the anode–electrolyte(shear driven)and particle-coating(tension driven)interfaces, emphasizing the need for tailored adhesion strategies. These findings provide actionable guidelines for designing robust SiO-based anodes, emphasizing the interplay among electrochemical efficiency, stress regulation, and interfacial durability in ASSBs. 展开更多

Short carbon fiber felts with an initial porosity of 89.5% were deposited by isobaric, isothermal chemical vapor infiltration using natural gas as carbon source. The bulk density of the deposited carbon/carbon (C/C) composites was 1.89 g/cm3 after depositing for 150 h. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the C/C composites were studied by polarized light microscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and three-point bending test. The results reveal that high textured pyrolytic carbon is deposited as the matrix of the composites, whose crystalline thickness and graphitization degree highly increase after heat treatment. A distinct decrease of the flexural strength and modulus accompanied by the increase of the toughness of the C/C composites is found to be correlated with the structural changes in the composites during the heat treatment process. 展开更多

To improve the oxidation resistance of C/C composites, a double SiC protective coating was prepared by a two-step technique. Firstly, the inner SiC layer was prepared by a pack cementation technique, and then an outer uniform and compact SiC coating was obtained by low pressure chemical vapor deposition. The microstructures and phase compositions of the coatings were characterized by SEM, EDS and XRD analyses. Oxidation behaviour of the SiC coated C/C composites was also investigated. It was found that the double SiC coating could protect C/C composites against oxidation at 1773 K in air for 178 h with a mass loss of 1.25%. The coated samples also underwent thermal shocks between 1773 K and room temperature 16 times. The mass loss of the coated C/C composites was only 2.74%. Double SiC layer structures were uniform and dense, and can suppress the generation of thermal stresses, facilitating an excellent anti-oxidation coating. 展开更多

A novel SiC?ZrB2 coating was prepared using a two-step technique by slurry-sintering and chemical vapor reaction on carbon/carbon (C/C) composites. The SiC?ZrB2 coating was composed of the scattered ZrB2 phase and the continuous SiC phase. It was observed that a good adhesion was built between the coating and the C/C composites. The SiC?ZrB2 coating samples exhibited a better ablation resistance in comparison with the uncoated C/C composites. The SiO2?ZrO2 barrier layer, the heat dissipation of the gaseous products and the pinning effect of ZrO2 all contributed to the good ablation resistance of the SiC?ZrB2 coated composites. 展开更多

A hip joint simulator was employed to predict the clinical wear behaviour of carbon/carbon (C/C) composites with needled carbon cloth preform and carbon felt preform. Wear particles generated from the two kinds of C/C composites were isolated and characterised by the size distribution and morphology. The evolvement of wear particles in the hip joint simulator was proposed. The results show that the wear particles from two kinds of C/C composites have a size ranging from submicron to tens of micrometers. The wear particles have various morphologies including broken fiber, fragment fiber, slice pyrolytic carbon and spherical pyrolytic carbon. C/C composites with needled carbon cloth preforms have larger size range and more broken fiber particles and slice pyrolytic carbon particles in comparison with C/C composites with carbon felt preforms. The evolvement of pyrolytic carbon particles is caused by surface regularization, whereas, the evolvement of carbon fiber particles is related to stress direction in the hip joint simulator. 展开更多

In order to effectively employ the unique high temperature mechanical properties of carbon/carbon composite substrates, SiC coatings reinforced by SiC whiskers were prepared by pack cementation method. The effect of SiC whiskers on the oxidation resistance properties of the single-layer coating and double-layer coating was investigated. SiC whiskers in the single-layer SiC coating have little effect on the anti-oxidation property but obviously improve the thermal shock property. The double-layer coating with inner-layer reinforced coating exhibits more perfect anti-oxidation ability than the double-layer coating with SiC inner-layer coating. 展开更多

Silicon (Si) has been considered as one of the most promising anode material for tHe next generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high energy densities, due to its high theoretical capacity, abundant availability and environmental friendliness. However. silicon materials with low intrinsic electric and ionic conductivity suffer from huge volume variation during lithiation/delithiation processes leading to the pulverization of Si and subsequently resulting in severe capacity fading of the electrodes. Coupling of Si with carbon (C) realizes a favorable combination of the two materials properties, such as high lithiation capacity of Si and excellent mechanical and conductive properties of C. making silicon/carbon composite (Si/C) ideal candidates for LIBs anodes. In this review, recent progresses of Si/C materials utilized in LIBs are summarized in terms of structural design principles, material synthesis methods, morphological characteristics and electrochemical performances by highlighting the material structures. The mechanisms behind the performance enhancement are also discussed. Moreover, other factors that affect the performance of Si/C anodes, such as prelithiation, electrolyte additives, and binders, are also discussed. We aim to present a full scope of the Si/C-based anodes, and help understand and design future structures of Si/C anodes in LIBs, 展开更多

Carbon fiber reinforced carbon composites(C/Cs),are the most promising high-temperature materials and could be widely applied in aerospace and nucleation fields, owing to their superior performances.However,C/Cs are very susceptible to destructive oxidation and thus fail at elevated temperatures.Though matrix modification and coating technologies with Si-based and ultra-high temperature ceramics(UHTCs)are valid to enhance the oxidation/ablation resistance of C/Cs,it’s not sufficient to satisfy the increasing practical applications, due to the inherent brittleness of ceramics, mismatch issues between coatings and C/C substrates, and the fact that carbonaceous matrices are easily prone to high-temperature oxidation. To effectively solve the aforementioned problems,micro/nano multiscale reinforcing strategies have been developed for C/Cs and/or the coatings over the past two decades,to fabricate C/Cs with high strength and excellent high-temperature stability. This review is to systematically summarize the most recent major and important advancements in some micro/nano multiscale strategies, including nanoparticles, nanowires, carbon nanotubes/fibers,whiskers,graphene,ceramic fibers and hybrid micro/nano structures, for C/Cs and/or the coatings,to achieve high-temperature oxidation/ablation-resistant C/Cs.Finally,this review is concluded with an outlook of major unsolved problems, challenges to be met and future research advice for C/Cs with excellent comprehensive mechanical-thermal performance. It’s hoped that a better understanding of this review will be of high scientific and industrial interest, since it provides unusual and feasible new ideas to develop potential and practical C/Cs with improved high-temperature mechanical and oxidation/ablation-resistant properties. 展开更多

Although in-situ growing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on carbon fibers could greatly increase the matrix-dominated mechanical properties of carbon/carbon composites (C/Cs), it always decreased the tensile strength of carbon fibers. In this work, CNTs were introduced into unidirectional carbon fiber (CF) preforms by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) and they were used to reinforce C/Cs. Effects of the content of CNTs introduced by EPD on tensile property of unidirectional C/Cs were investigated. Results demonstrated that EPD could be used as a simple and efficient method to fabricate carbon nanotube reinforced C/Cs (CNT-C/Cs) with excellent tensile strength, which pays a meaningful way to maximize the global performance of CNT-C/Cs. 展开更多

Uni-directional carbon/carbon composites with high thermal conductivity are suitable to supply continuous thermal protection for future reentry vehicles since they could reduce surface temperature and ablation rates simultaneously in harsh environments. In this work, the high thermal conductivity carbon/carbon composites were prepared by chemical vapor infiltration. After heat-treatment,both their open porosity and internal friction increase due to the fiber/matrix thermal expansion mismatch;while their thermal conductive performance become better due to more complete carbon structure. With raising heat-treatment temperature from 1800℃to 2450℃,the mass and linear ablation rates of C/C composites with fibers vertical to the oxyacetylene torch for 60 s decrease from 0.66 mg/s and 2.95μm/s to 0.51 mg/s and 2.05μm/s respectively. The improved ablation resistance is resulted from the increased thermal conductivity from 282 to 508 W/(m·K)and more carbon fibers exposed to the flame during ablation, which have better oxidation resistance than those of carbon matrix. While such ablation rates become larger for composites with fibers parallel to the flame, from 1.02 mg/s and 3.73μm/s to 1.28 mg/s and 5.0μm/s respectively since the ablation occurred more easily through gaps at the fiber/matrix interfaces, which become larger and are always exposed to the flame for this case. 展开更多

Graphite as a promising anode candidate of K-ion batteries(KIBs)has been increasingly studied currently, but corresponding rate performance and cycling stability are usually inferior to amorphous carbon materials. To protect the layer structure and further boost performance,tempura-like carbon/carbon nanocomposite of graphite@pitch-derived S-doped carbon(G@PSC)is designed and prepared by a facile and low-temperature modified molten salt method. This robust encapsulation structure makes their respective advantages complementary to each other, showing mutual promotion of electrochemical performances caused by synergy effect. As a result, the G@PSC electrode is applied in KIBs,delivering impressive rate capabilities(465,408,370,332,290,and 227 m A h g^(-1)at 0.05,0.2,0.5,1,2,and 5 A g^(-1))and ultralong cyclic stability(163 m A g^(-1)remaining even after 8000 cycles at 2 A g^(-1)).On basis of ex-situ studies, the sectionalized K-storage mechanism with adsorption(pseudocapacitance caused by S doping)-intercalation(pitch-derived carbon and graphite)pattern is revealed. Moreover, the exact insights into remarkable rate performances are taken by electrochemical kinetics tests and density functional theory calculation. In a word, this study adopts a facile method to synthesize high-performance carbon/carbon nanocomposite and is of practical significance for development of carbonaceous anode in KIBs. 展开更多

In order to improve the oxidation resistance of carbon/carbon (C/C) composites,a SiC/C-AlPO4 multi-layer coating was fabricated on the C/C composites by a simple and low-cost method. The internal SiC bonding layer was prepared by a two-step pack cementation process and the external C-AlPO4 coating was deposited by hydrothermal electrophoretic deposition process.Phase compositions and microstructures of the as-prepared multi-layer coating were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD),scaning electron microspocy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS).Anti-oxidation properties, oxidation behavior and the failure behavior of the coated composites were investigated. The results indicate that the multi-layer coating exhibits obviously two-layer structure. The inner layer is composed of β-SiC,α-SiC phase with a scale of silicon phase. The outer layer is composed of cristobalite aluminum phosphate (C-AlPO4) crystallites. The SEM observation shows the good bonding between the inner and outer layers. The multi-layer coating displays an excellent oxidation resistance in air in the temperature range from 1573 to 1773 K,and the corresponding oxidation activation energy of the coated C/C composites is calculated to be 117.2 kJ/mol.The oxidation process is predominantly controlled by the diffusion of O2 through the C-AlPO 4 coating. The failure of the multi-layer coating results from the generation of the microholes that may be left by the escape of the oxidation gases. 展开更多

The presence of Hg in the aqueous media is known to cause severe health issues in both humans and animals. Many technologies and especially adsorbents have been applied for its removal. In this study, a graphene oxide–carbon composite(GO–CC) as a new adsorbent was prepared by sol gel procedure and characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy, BET and EDX. The effects of different variables including solution p H, contact time, adsorbent dose and GO ratio in adsorbent matrix on the removal capacity of Hg were studied. The isotherm data correlated well with the Langmuir isotherm model. Further analysis recommended that the Hg^(2+) adsorption process is governed by the intra-particle and external mass transfer, in which the film diffusion was the rate restrictive step. The presented composite has maximum absorption capacity, q_(max) of 68.8 mg·g^(-1), which is comparable with carbon based adsorbent reported in the previous publications. 展开更多

To protect carbon/carbon (C/C) composites from oxidation, a SiC coating modified with SiO2 was prepared by a complex technology. The inner SiC coating with thickness varying from 150 to 300 μm was initially coated by chemical vapor reaction (CVR): a simple and cheap technique to prepare the SiC coating via siliconizing the substrate that was exposed to the mixed vapor (Si and SiO2) at high temperatures (1 923?2 273 K). Then the as-prepared coating was processed by a dipping and drying procedure with tetraethoxysilane as source materials to form SiO2 to fill the cracks and holes. Oxidation tests show that, after oxidation in air at 1 623 K for 10 h and thermal cycling between 1 623 K and room temperature 5 times, the mass loss of the CVR coated sample is up to 18.21%, while the sample coated with modified coating is only 5.96%, exhibiting an obvious improvement of oxidation and thermal shock resistance of the coating. The mass loss of the modified sample is mainly contributed to the reaction of C/C substrate with oxygen diffusing through the penetrating cracks formed in thermal shock tests. 展开更多

The results indicate that the Si/Mo ratio of the slurry and sintering processing were two main factors that significantly affected the structure and phase composition of the multi-coating. Appropriate sintering process and relatively high Si/Mo ratio were essential for preparing the multi-coating with dense structure and favorable phase composition. After being sintered at 1723 K for 2 h and with the Si/Mo ratio of the slurry being 4.5 (weight ratio), a dense structure accompanied by favorable phase composition of the coating can be obtained. When heat treated at 2373 K for I h, this coating became more compact and continuous. Oxidation tests (performed at 1623 and 1823 K) demonstrated that both of these two obtained multi-coatings exhibited better anti-oxidation property than single layer SiC coating. 展开更多
