The Impact of Wildfires on North American Climate Through Ecosystem Changes

In the context of global warming, the increasing wildfire frequency has become a critical climate research focus in North America. This study used the Community Earth System Model(CESM 1.2) to investigate the impacts of 20thcentury wildfires on North American climate and hydrology. Summer represents the peak wildfire season in North America, with the Gulf of Mexico and Midwest regions experiencing the most severe effects. Wildfires not only damage vegetation during the fire season but also extend prolonged impacts into non-fire periods, showing distinct seasonal variations. In spring, wildfires increase surface albedo, triggering a cooling effect through enhanced snow cover and delayed snowmelt. Conversely, summer and autumn surface warming stems primarily from wildfire-suppressed vegetation transpiration. Warming near the Gulf of Mexico enhances moisture transport and precipitation, particularly in summer and autumn. Reduced evaporation and increased precipitation from the Gulf of Mexico significantly altered the hydrological cycle across North America, leading to increased runoff continent-wide. 展开更多

Latin American countries possess rich resources of critical minerals,which have long underpinned their economic growth and social advancement.Meanwhile,however,these countries are grappling with excessive external dependency,underdeveloped industrial chains,low value-added exports,and weak international discourse power.In recent years,due to various external and internal factors,such as the restructuring of the global supply chains,the intensification of major-country rivalry,the transformation of regional development patterns,and the resurgence of resource nationalism,Latin American countries have been more aware of the strategic value and security attribute of critical minerals.Increasingly,they have strengthened the strategic governance of these resources from the national security perspective to defend national sovereignty over resources,enhance the resilience of their supply chains,improve industrial independence,and protect ecological security.Towards these ends,Latin American countries have been actively exploring and developing critical minerals strategies that align with global geopolitical changes and regional transformation needs.In practice,Latin American countries have tightened their control over critical minerals,considered both short-term economic gains and long-term development interests,balanced environmental protection and social responsibility,and conducted international mining cooperation based on the principles of diversity and balance.They are striving to maximize their security and development interests by seeking high-level security and high-quality development of critical mineral resources. 展开更多

Relationship between environmental performance indices and blockchain-based sustainability-focused companies:Evidence from countries in Europe and America

As the world grapples with increasing environmental challenges,innovative technologies are essential for promoting sustainability and accountability.This study examined the impact of environmental performance indices(EPIs)on the growth and investment trends of blockchain-based sustainability-focused companies in 15 countries(Belgium,Czechia,Denmark,Estonia,Finland,France,Germany,Italy,Norway,Poland,Sweden,Spain,Switzerland,the United Kingdom,and the United States)from Europe and America during 2010-2022.This study used the negative binomial regression model to assess the relationship between EPIs and blockchain-based sustainability-focused companies based on the data from the CrunchBase and EarthData.Results indicated that in ecosystem vitality,national terrestrial biome protection efforts were negatively correlated the formation of blockchain-based sustainability-focused companies,while global terrestrial biome protection efforts and marine protected areas had a positive impact on the formation of these companies and the number of funding rounds.In environmental health,PM2.5 exposure had a positive impact on the number of funding rounds.Conversely,pollutants such as sulfur dioxide(SO_(2))and ocean plastics deterred the formation of blockchain-based sustainability-focused companies and reduced the number of funding rounds.In climate change performance,adjusted emission growth rate for carbon dioxide(CO_(2)),adjusted emission growth rate for F-gases,and adjusted emission growth rate for black carbon had a significantly positive impact on the formation of blockchain-based sustainability-focused companies.Conversely,adjusted emission growth rate for Nitrous Oxide(N_(2)O)and projected greenhouse gas emissions in 2050 negatively affected the formation of these companies.These findings highlight the dual role of EPIs as driving factors and barriers in the development and investment of blockchain-based sustainability-focused companies in countries from Europe and America. 展开更多

Genomic medicine has evolved significantly,merging centuries of scientific progress with modern molecular biology and clinical care.It utilizes knowledge of the human genome to enhance disease prevention,diagnosis,treatment,and potential reversal.Genomic medicine in hepatology is particularly promising due to the crucial role of the liver in several metabolic processes and its association with diseases such as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease,type 2 diabetes mellitus,liver cirrhosis,and cardiovascular conditions.The mid-20th century witnessed a paradigm shift in medicine,marked by the emergence of molecular biology,which enabled a deeper understanding of gene expression and regulation.This connection between basic science and clinical practice has enhanced our knowledge of the role of gene-environment interactions in the onset and progression of liver diseases.In Latin America,including Mexico,with its genetically diverse and admixed populations,genomic medicine provides a foundation for personalized and culturally relevant health strategies.This review highlights the need for genomic medicine,examining its historical evolution,integration into hepatology in Mexico,and its potential applications in the prevention of chronic diseases.It emphasizes the importance of training in genomic literacy and interdisciplinary education in medical training,particularly in the field of hepatology,with a focus on genomic medicine expertise. 展开更多

Growing climate change concerns have intensified the focus on agribusiness sustainability,driving an urgent energy transition to improve production efficiency and mitigate environmental harm.The complex interplay between energy efficiency and energy consumption highlights the essential role of strategic energy policies in ensuring sustainable development.This study used the Double-Log regression model with bootstrap resampling to examine the rebound effect in the energy transition of agribusiness focusing on five Latin American countries including Brazil,Argentina,Uruguay,Colombia,and Mexico based on the agricultural sector data during 2010–2022.The findings revealed that the rebound effect significantly influences energy transition,with varying degrees of impact across agricultural sectors.This study identified partial rebound effect across all five countries,with elasticity coefficient varying from 9.63%(Colombia’s coffee sector)to 89.12%(Brazil’s livestock sector).In Brazil’s sugarcane sector,nonrenewable energy,agricultural employment,and irrigation efficiency were identified as key factors influencing energy consumption,while in livestock sector,energy consumption was affected by CH_(4)emissions,income and well-being of farmers,water consumption,and water conservation practices.In Mexico’s livestock sector,CH_(4)emissions,nonrenewable energy,and water conservation practices were the key factors affecting energy consumption.In Argentina’s sugarcane sector,pesticides,NO_(2)emissions,renewable energy,and agricultural employment were the key factors affecting energy consumption,while renewable energy,income and well-being of farmers,and water consumption were the key factors affecting energy consumption in livestock sector.In Uruguay’s livestock sector,non-renewable energy,income and well-being of farmers,and irrigation efficiency were the key factors affecting energy consumption.In Colombia’coffee sector,NO_(2)emissions and irrigation efficiency were identified as key factors influencing energy consumption.Finally,this study reinforces the importance of aligning energy transition with Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs),ensuring that energy efficiency gains do not inadvertently increase energy consumption or environmental degradation. 展开更多

The sources of subducting sediments at the Middle America Trench and their implications for the material cycling in subduction zone

Subducted sediments,as an integral part of subducted slab,can strongly influence the chemistry of volcanic arc lavas,and clarify the relationship between subduction input and arc output,which is the focus of the subduction factory theory in the context of plate tectonics.In this study,we analyzed major and trace element compositions of the subducting sediments from two sites[Deep Sea Drilling Program(DSDP)Site 495 and Ocean Drilling Program(ODP)Site 1039]at the different locations along the Middle America Trench.The results showed that the sediments from these two sites are mainly composed of terrigenous material,carbonate components,and biogenic silicate in different proportions.In order to reduce the effects of the variations in subduction topography on the chemical composition of sediments,we recalculated the bulk subducted sediment composition at northern and southern Central America subduction zone,and identified the Nicaragua Fracture Zone as the dividing line for northern and southern subducting sediments at Middle America Trench.Compared to the global trench subducting sediment,both the subducting sediments from northern and southern Central America subduction zone exhibit lower contents of terrigenous material-controlled elements and are more enriched in the biogenic components-controlled elements.We suggested that the variations in both chemical compositions for sediments and subduction angles are responsible for the different contributions of subducting sediments to volcanic arc magmatism in the northern Central America. 展开更多

Today,more than 90%of children who are born with congenital heart disease survive and reach adulthood,especially in developed countries.Consequently,the population of adults with congenital heart disease has increased signiffcantly over the last few decades.In Latin America and the Caribbean countries,this same scenario is occurring at an accelerated pace.Loss to follow-up is a global problem in adults with congenital heart disease,ranging from 30–60%.In Latin America and Caribbean countries,it is estimated that less than 10%of adults with congenital heart disease are being followed.The small number of specialists and adult congenital heart disease specialized centers,as well as virtually nonexistent transition and transfer programs,are some of the reasons for this.This article is a narrative review of the current status of the transition and transfer of young adults with congenital heart disease,with a special focus on Latin America and Caribbean countries.It describes the general concepts of transition and transfer,analyzes barriers and,ffnally,presents specialized care alternatives that would reduce losses and improve this population’s care. 展开更多
