Generally speaking, the pathophysiological pathway frequently involves either (or a combination of) elevated serum cholesterol levels, predominantly attributed to dietary patterns characterized by extremely high levels of saturated and trans-fat consumption. Day-to-day nutritional epidemiology among university students suggests that they represent a crucial demographic for the study of preventive interventions. Objective: This in-depth study and investigation were specifically aimed to quantitatively assess and compare prevailing patterns of dietary fat consumption between female students enrolled in health sciences and non-health sciences programs at major universities in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was comprised of 434 Saudi female university students (age range: 18 - 25 years), utilizing a validated Block Dietary Fat Screener accompanied by anthropometric measurements and comprehensive demographic data collection. The sampling methodology consisted of a snowball technique that was spread across three major academic institutions in Riyadh. Results: Statistical analysis revealed a significant association between academic specialization and patterns of dietary fat consumption (p = 0.012). Paradoxically, students of health science exhibited a higher prevalence of very high fat intake (41.9%) compared with their non-health sciences counterparts (27.6%). Surprisingly, anthropometric stratification revealed that it was the underweight students who demonstrated very high levels of fat consumption. A notable socioeconomic gradient was observed, with students from households earning 15,000 - 20,000 SR monthly showing the highest prevalence of very high-fat consumption (47.1%), although this association did not achieve statistical significance (p = 0.104). Conclusion: These findings challenge the conventional assumption that health sciences education correlates with superior dietary behaviors. The data suggests a critical need for enhanced education in nutrition, as well as intervention using various behavioral programs across all academic disciplines, particularly those addressing the disconnect between nutritional knowledge and dietary practices among students of health sciences. Future longitudinal studies are warranted in order to elucidate the temporal relationship between academic specialization and dietary behaviors.展开更多

Furthermore, in this paper, I also envisage different methods for deconstructing the overwhelming influence of hegemony in the science classroom. I focus on two research questions:(1) In what ways could I explore the deep-seated, hegemonic-science, pedagogical culture in my science teaching and learning?(2) How could I envisage the possible ways for deconstructing hegemony in science education? In this autoethnographic inquiry, I used the ‘knowledge-constitutive interests’ theory as a referent in data text generation and meaning-making. This theoretical lens helped unfold the deep-rooted,hegemony-like singular and absolute scientific knowledge consumption practice. While engaging in reflection-on-/in-/for-actions, I realized the need for curious, contextual and cultural selves and communication as a dance rather than a war for reforming and transforming these deep-seated, hegemonic, pedagogical cultures and identities. Moreover, I also attempt to practise the transdisciplinary STEAM(science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) approach for connecting classroom science learning with learners' lives. I believe that it could support reforming/transforming my sit-and-get science teaching. Therefore, I also offer to be involved in a transdisciplinary pedagogy(like STEAM), research and academic writing for transformative curricular praxis and inclusive science learning.展开更多

文摘The teaching of earth science in Chinese senior high school geography has faced significant challenges, particularly in the compulsory module“The History of the Earth.”Despite being part of the 2019 curriculum reform, current teaching practices often fail to emphasize the geographical nature of the subject, instead treating it as a mix of geology, biology, and historical facts. This paper addresses this challenge by proposing a framework that maintains a geographical focus while teaching earth science concepts. The framework consists of three integrated approaches.First,it introduces a structured method for teaching geological time through an“Eon→Era→Period→Year”progression, helping students build a comprehensive understanding of temporal scales from a geographical perspective.Second,it demonstrates how to effectively use the“Trade Space for Time”method alongside stratigraphic analysis, enabling students to connect spatial and temporal aspects of geographical phenomena.Third,it develops geographical thinking by following the logical pathway of“Fossil→Biology→Environment,”ensuring that biological evidence is interpreted within a geographical context. For successful implementation, the paper recommends two key strategies:managing interdisciplinary content while maintaining geography’s core focus, and emphasizing geographical characteristics throughout specific teaching content. This approach ensures that“The History of the Earth”fulfills its role in developing students’geographical literacy while contributing to their broader understanding of earth science within China’s senior high school curriculum.

The data suggests a critical need for enhanced education in nutrition, as well as intervention using various behavioral programs across all academic disciplines, particularly those addressing the disconnect between nutritional knowledge and dietary practices among students of health sciences. Future longitudinal studies are warranted in order to elucidate the temporal relationship between academic specialization and dietary behaviors.

文摘Chemistry science popularization for lower grades(Grades 1-2)in primary schools is an important part of science enlightenment education. However,in practice,it generally faces practical dilemmas such as insufficient content adaptability,a single implementation method, and a lack of coordination mechanisms.Based on Piaget’s Cognitive Development Theory and the STSE(Science,Technology,Society,Environment)educational concept, this study constructed a four-in-one strategy system of“content development-teaching implementation-collaborative linkage-guarantee support”through literature analysis, action research, and empirical comparison. An empirical study was conducted in two primary schools for one academic year. The results show that this strategy system can increase students’interest in participating in chemistry science popularization by 42 percentage points, the compliance rate of observation ability reaches 85%,and the collaborative participation of families, schools, and society rises to 85%.The core strategies formed in the study,including“age-appropriate content screening, interactive teaching implementation,three-dimensional collaborative promotion, and full-process guarantee support,”provide a replicable practical model for the standardized and efficient development of chemistry science popularization for lower grades in primary schools. They also offer empirical references for fulfilling the requirement of“strengthening the pertinence and effectiveness of science popularization”in the Law of the People’s Republic of China on Popularization of Science and Technology(revised in 2024).

文摘With the vigorous development of Sino-foreign cooperative education,English teaching for specialized courses has become a crucial link in cultivating internationalized professionals. This paper takes the Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering(Sino-German Cooperation)major of the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology as the research object, and deeply analyzes the dilemmas faced by English teaching in this major, such as significant differences in students’English foundations, poor adaptability of teaching resources, and insufficient cultivation of cross-cultural communication skills.Based on this,a series of teaching reform strategies are proposed, covering aspects, such as optimizing teaching objectives, innovating curriculum settings, changing teaching methods, strengthening the construction of the teaching staff, and improving the teaching evaluation system.Specific teaching reform cases are also incorporated, aiming to improve the quality of English teaching for specialized courses and cultivate internationalized talents with solid professional knowledge and excellent English capabilities.
文摘This paper explores the hegemonic pedagogical-cultures-based narratives that I experienced in my science teaching and learning journey. Therefore, I also offer to be involved in a transdisciplinary pedagogy(like STEAM), research and academic writing for transformative curricular praxis and inclusive science learning.
文摘The number of students demanding computer science(CS)education is rapidly rising, and while faculty sizes are also growing, the traditional pipeline consisting of a CS major,a CS master’s,and then a move to industry or a Ph.D.program is simply not scalable. To address this problem, the Department of Computing at the University of Illinois has introduced a multidisciplinary approach to computing, which is a scalable and collaborative approach to capitalize on the tremendous demand for computer science education. The key component of the approach is the blended major, also referred to as“CS+X”,where CS denotes computer science and X denotes a non-computing field. These CS+X blended degrees enable win-win partnerships among multiple subject areas, distributing the educational responsibilities while growing the entire university. To meet the demand from non-CS majors, another pathway that is offered is a graduate certificate program in addition to the traditional minor program. To accommodate the large number of students, scalable teaching tools, such as automatic graders, have also been developed.
