The design of experiment approach was employed to acquire data in controlled way using Taguchi method. A Pin-on-disc apparatus was used to conduct the dry sliding wear test. An orthogonal array, signal-to-noise ratio and analysis of variance were employed to investigate the wear behavior of aluminium and it’s composite. The mathematical model was obtained to determine the wear rate of the aluminium and it’s composite. The confirmation tests were conducted to verify the experimental results. The incorporation of Be3Al2(SiO3)6 as reinforcement material in aluminium matrix material improves the tribological characteristics.展开更多

Machining experiments were carried out at the lathe using carbide cutting insert coated with TiC and two forms of cutting tools made of AISI 5140 steel. Three levels for spindle speed, depth of cut, feed rate and tool overhang were chosen as cutting variables. The Taguchi method L9 orthogonal array was applied to design of experiment. By the help of signal-to-noise ratio and analysis of variance, it was concluded that spindle speed has the significant effect on the surface roughness, while tool overhang is the dominant factor affecting natural frequency for both cutting tools. In addition, the optimum cutting conditions for surface roughness and natural frequency were found at different levels. Finally, confirmation experiments were conducted to verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the Taguchi method in optimizing the cutting parameters for surface roughness and natural frequency.展开更多

Generally used UT thickness data evaluation methods are Band, Blanket, and PTP (Point to Point) methods. Those may not desirable to identify wall thinning on local area caused by erosion. This is because the space between inspecting points of those methods are wide for covering full surface being inspected components. When the evaluation methods are applied to a certain pipe component, unnecessary re-inspection may also be generated even though wall thinning of components does not progress. In those cases, economical loss caused by repeated inspection and problems of maintaining the pipe integrity followed by decreasing the number of newly inspected components may be generated. EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute in USA) has suggested several statistical methods such as FRIEDMAN test method, ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) method, Monte Carlo method, and TPM (Total Point Method) to distinguish whether multiple inspecting components have been thinned or not. This paper presents the NAM (Near Area of Minimum) method developed by KEPCO-E & C for distinguishing whether multiple inspecting components have been thinned or not. In addition, this paper presents the analysis results for multiple inspecting ones over three times based on the NAM method compared with the other methods suggested by EPRI.展开更多

The wear and frictional properties of the hybrid metal matrix composites have been studied by performing dry sliding wear test using pin-on-disc wear tester. A L27 orthogonal array is selected for the analysis of the data. From the test results it is observed that sliding distance has the significant contribution in controlling the friction and wear behaviour of hybrid composites. A confirmation test is also carried out to verify the accuracy of the results obtained through the optimization. In addition an optical micrograph test is also performed on the wear tracks to study the wear mechanism.展开更多
