The aim was also to test their specific influence on the cementitious matrix of hardened concrete. Several laboratory tests were conducted on samples from Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire. To develop a variety of concrete formulations meeting rheological criteria (deformability, bleeding, segregation) and create an optimal concrete formulation approach considering its microstructural and compacting matrix, a good granular distribution was planned, using two types of sand (rolled and crushed). This involved correcting the rolled sand with variable proportions (30% to 50%) of crushed sand. The results from the eight concrete formulations studied, using the Dreux-Gorisse method, showed that six formulations produced the expected results. Compressive strengths at 28 days ranged from 25 to 36.75 MPa. As a result, formulation 3 appears to be the best, with a mechanical strength of 36.75 MPa at 28 days, compared to formulation 1 (33.75 MPa), formulation 4 (27.25 MPa), and formulation 2 (26.65 MPa) for the Brazzaville locality. For the Pointe-Noire locality, formulation 8 was judged the best, with a characteristic mechanical strength of 29.70 MPa at 28 days, followed by formulation 7 (27.30 MPa), formulation 5 (22.80 MPa), and formulation 6 (18.30 MPa). In summary, the concretes formulated with raw sand showed better results than those with improved sands. The same was true for concrete formulations using rolled sand and gravel.展开更多

To do this, studied materials are respectively collected from a laterite clay pit in Ndouloumadjie Dembe (Matam, Northern Senegal) and another from a termite mound in Tattaguine (Fatick, Central Senegal). These samples are first subjected to Geotechnical identification tests. Mud bricks are then made with raw or sifted millet involucre improved to 1%, 2%, and 3% at 5 mm sieve samples. These briquettes are subjected to compression tests and thermal evaluations. Lagrange and Newton methods of numeric modelling are used to test the whole mixture points between 1% and 3% millet involucre for a better correlation between mechanical and thermal parameters. The results show that in Matam, as well as in Tattaguine, these muds, raw or improved, are of good thermomechanical quality when they are used in bricks making. And the thermomechanical coupling quality reaches a maximum situated at 2.125% for Ndouloumadjie and 2.05% for Tattaguine. These briquettes’ building quality depends on the mud content used in iron, aluminum, silica and clay. Thus, same natural materials can be used in the establishment of habitats according to their geotechnical, chemical, mechanical and thermal characteristics.展开更多

The causes of rockfall are presence of discontinuities, high angle cut slopes, heavy rainfall, and unplanned slope geometry etc. Slope geometry is one of the most triggering parameters for rockfall, when there are variations in slope angle along the profile of slope. The Present study involves rockfall hazard assessment of road cut slopes for 15 km distance starting from Mahabaleshwar town along State Highway-72 (SH-72). The vertical to subvertical cut slopes are prone to instability due to unfavorable orientation of discontinuities in slope face of weathered and altered basaltic rockmass. The predominant type of instability has been found as wedge type failure involving medium to large size blocks. In order to investigate the existing stability conditions, analyses were carried out at two locations under different slope conditions. The kinematic analysis was performed using stereographic projection method. RockFall 4.0 numerical simulator software was used to calculate the maximum bounce heights, total kinetic energies and translational velocities of the falling rockmass blocks, and a comparative analysis is presented with increasing the mass of blocks and height of the slope. The result of numerical analysis shows that varying slope angle geometry creates more problems as compared to the mass of blocks in the scenario of rockfall.展开更多

The acid leaching potential of both oxalic acid and citric acid were estimated. Manganese leaching amount were measured by using standard manganese curve and estimated by titration method. Effects of various acid concentrations on leaching efficiency were studied. The observed result suggested prominent manganese recovery of 66% by oxalic acid at 2 M concentration whereas citric acid had less effect on leaching showing leaching percentage upto 40% in 6 days. Acid leaching of manganese ore with both the acids gave a comparative data stating that oxalic acid leached better than citric acid.展开更多

Prediction of the cuttings concentration in the wellbore annulus as a function of operational drilling parameters such as wellbore geometry, pumping rate, drilling fluid rheology and density and maximum drilling rate is very important for optimizing these parameters. This paper describes a simple and more reliable artificial neural network (ANN) method and multiple linear regression (MLR) to predict cuttings concentration during foam drilling operation. This model is applicable for various borehole conditions using some critical parameters associated with foam velocity, foam quality, hole geometry, subsurface condition (pressure and temperature) and pipe rotation. The average absolute percent relative error (AAPE) between the experimental cuttings concentration and ANN model is less than 6%, and using MLR, AAPE is less than 9%. A comparison of the ANN and mechanistic model was done. The AAPE values for all datasets in this study were 3.2%, 8.5% and 10.3% for ANN model, MLR model and mechanistic model respectively. The results show high ability of ANN in prediction with respect to statistical methods.展开更多

These bricks are made with two clayey soils from two deposits of Congo located in Brazzaville and Yengola. Mineralogical and geotechnical analysis revealed that the soil of Brazzaville is mainly composed of kaolinite whereas that of Yengola is a mixture of kaolinite and illite. The amounts of clay (46 and 48%, respectively) are higher than those usually recommended for bricks’ production without stabilizers. Despite this difference of mineralogical compositions, the physical properties of these soils are quite similar. The compressive strength of the resulted bricks compacted with an energy of 2.8 MPa is about 1.5 MPa, which is the lower limit value allowed for adobes. Reinforcing with polyethylene waste nets increased the strength by about 20 to 30% and slightly enhanced resistance to water, Young’s modulus and strain to failure. However, the reinforcement had no significant effect either on bricks’ curing length or on their shrinkage.展开更多

The National Highway (NH-1D) is the most strategic and the only all weather surface link between the two districts of Ladakh region (Kargil and Leh). The area under investigation experiences high vehicular traffic, particularly between March and August, as in the remaining months the Kargil and Leh districts?remain cutoff?from each other due to bad weather. In recent years, frequent occurrences of slope failures along the highway primarily affect the smooth functioning of the traffic movement which severely affects the life of the people of the area. Strategically, this road network is very important and plays a significant role in transportation and other activities. In order to ensure the stability of road network in the area, it becomes extremely important to understand the triggering mechanism of these failures. The present study made an attempt in this direction and the Slope Mass Rating (SMR) method has been used for slope stability analysis at different locations. The stability of the slopes was also assessed using kinematic analysis conjointly with SMR to identify the types of failure and its potential failure directions associated with each slope. The result obtained after calculating RMR from the selected facets ranges from 11 to 89 with lower values indicating presence of potentially unstable areas. Results have shown that in a total of 20 facets, 65.28% belong to wedge failure, 22.26%?belong to toppling failure and 12.45% belong to plane failure.展开更多

The ore deposit, developed between ultramafic rocks and limestones during Early Cretaceous to Eocene, represents part of the Albanian Mirdita ophiolite zone. The lateritization of the deposit was observed mainly in three separate areas, the Has-Kukes-Lure in the North, Pogradec-Librazhd in the center and Devoll in the South. The main mineralogical components of the ore are goethite, hematite and quartz, while the secondary ones are chlorite (clinochlore, Ni-chlorite), kaolinite and lizardite. Nickel is mainly found in chlorite. The ore is characterized by the presence of spheroid particles, such as oval, pisoid, peloid and composite spheroid. According to the microscopical examination the ore is characterized in general as allotriomorphic, inequigranular and the texture is oolitic-pisolitic. For the mineral processing gravimetric and magnetic separation are used in the size fractions NJ + 4 mm, dž + 1 mm, ǃ + 0.250 mm and ǂ.250 + 0.063 mm. The chemical and mineralogical analyses, as well as the microscopic examination have shown that mineral processing by magnetic separation gives the most satisfactory results for the size fractions ǃ + 0.250 mm and ǂ.250 + 0.063 mm.展开更多

In addition, hydraulic conductivity of compacted soil layers is critical component for designing liner and cover systems for waste landfills. Hydraulic conductivity can be predicted using empirical relationships, capillary models, statistical models and hydraulic radius theories [1]. In the current research work the reliability of Kozeny-Carman equation for the determination of the hydraulic conductivity of compacted clayey soils, is evaluated. The relationship between the liquid limit and the specific surface of the tested samples is also investigated. The resulting equation gives the ability for quick estimation of specific surface and hydraulic conductivity of the compacted clayey samples. The results presented here show that the Kozeny-Carman equation provides good predictions of the hydraulic conductivity of homogenized clayey soils compacted under given compactive effort, despite the consensus set out in the literature.展开更多

Multi Point Statistic (MPS) algorithms can be used to model these high order relations from a visually and statistically explicit model, a training image. FILTERSIM as a pattern based MPS method attracts much attention. It decreases the complexity of computation, accelerates search process and increases CPU per-formance compare to other MPS methods by transferring training image patterns to a lower dimensional space. The results quality is not however as satisfactory. This work presents an improved version of FILTERSIM in which pattern extraction, persisting and pasting steps are modified to enhance visual quality and structures continuity in the realiza-tions. Examples shown in this paper give visual appealing results for the reconstruction of stationary complex struc-tures.展开更多

First, chemical tests show that Basalt is richer in silica 51.59% versus 2.84% for Limestone. Basalt is made up of silica minerals and essentially carbonated minerals with a CaO percentage of 50.05%. Chemical results also show that Basalt is richer in iron 12.71% versus 0.44% for Limestone. Finally, they revealed a fire loss of 40.91% for Limestone and 2.44% for Basalt. Second, physical analysis results show that Diack Basalt has the best characteristics with a flattening coefficient of 5% between 5% and 20%;the percentage of pollutants is 0.36% less than 1%;the Los Angeles coefficient is 12.21% below 15, while Bandia Limestone gives a flattening coefficient of 3%;the Los Angeles coefficient of 40.17% and the percentage of pollutant (2.4%) well above 2%. It is noted that the percentage of Limestone pollutant is too high. These important results show the net advantage of Basalt compared to Limestone in terms of physical-chemical characteristics.展开更多

To be successfully exploited it is important to know the mineralogical and microstructural characteristics of the ore. Besides, the identification of the mineralogical components as well as the fabric description, can lead to the interpretation of the mechanism of deposit genesis. The aim of the present study is the microscopic and microanalytical investigation of the Fe-Ni ores from Komnina Vermion area (N.W. Greece). The mineralogical composition of the ore is mainly hematite, quartz, chromite and chlorite, while in minor quantities goethite, nickeliferous chlorite, serpentine, talc and calcite are also present. The ore structure is allotriomorphic inequigranular and the texture is oolitic-pisolitic. According to microscopic examination the deposit can be registered as a secondary pseudo-autochthonous.展开更多

These account for only a small amount of the fundamental understanding of gas hydrates and the use of such a novel technology. A quick and broad analysis of novel hydrate promoters is needed to assess the potential of other promoter agents. This will improve the understanding of rapid hydrate formation and fundamental ideas related to the kinetics and formation of hydrates. There are still hundreds of other surfactants that have not been identified for rapid formation. The insurmountable endeavor deters many from trying as it can be like finding a needle in a hay stack. This almost futile endeavor of correctly identifying a surfactant as a promoter agent without doing a formation test can be accomplished with recent techniques. Using Raman and a liquid hydrocarbon (Cyclo-pentane), surfactants may shift the sample’s peak towards the hydrate peak (890 cm–1), thereby identifying it as a choice surfactant for rapid formation of hydrates. With a broad survey of surfactants, understanding fundamental science and engineering kinetics for hydrates will be easily achieved. Finding more effective and novel surfactants for hydrate formations will broaden the field of hydrates and self-assembling crystallization. As hydrate technology broadens, interdisciplinary fields can contribute expertise from surface science to spectroscopy leading to geological formations and engineering kinetics.展开更多

Its main ore-controlling structure, represented by losange, consisting of rhombohedral and tetrahedral blocks-duplexes mosaic clusters, which are separated by narrow tectonic sutures, is specified. It is clarified that polycomponent ores clusters are confined with these small-block sutures, made by subvolcanic dykes of shoshonite-latite volcano-plutonic association (233 - 188 million years), apodyke dynamometamorphites (breccias, cataclasite, mylonites) and also mechanometasomatites. Four stages of the dynamometamorphites formation characterized by different species compositions of ore minerals appeared as a result of mechanochemical reactions are determined. A carbonyl model of mineral microaggregates formation with films containing noble metal nanoparticles is proposed. Ore-forming system features of Mykert-Sanzheevka field are considered.展开更多

Indeed, researchers of the Cambridge University had noticed that during their various experiments, the rate of volumetric deformation ( ) of the sample tending to zero every time the rupture of the specimen is reached during a test performed on a clay specimen Roscoe et al., 1958. To better understand and clarify this mechanical behaviour, a description has been proposed in the (e, p, q) representation that means void ratio, volumetric stress (spherical pressure) and deviatoric stress. This frame of theoretical study and apprehension is called: the theory of the Critical State. One of the major problems met at the time of our present research is the non-availability of triaxial apparatus allowing us to achieve some tests on tropical soils (samples from Senegal in West Africa) and to describe the behaviour of these materials easily like the researchers of the university of Cambridge in the theory of the critical state. To by-pass this difficulty, we decided to consider two very classical and simple mechanical tests: shear-box and the oedometer test as well as the interrelationship of the results given by the tests and some theoretical calculations. This is a way to identify an elasto-plastic model (the modified Cam Clay model) without any triaxial experiment. Indeed it supposes the model to be suitable to describe the mechanical behaviour of the considered clays.展开更多

This material is largely representative of engineering soil all around the tropical African Countries [1,2]. Gravel lateritic soils from parts of Burkina Faso and Senegal (West Africa) are used to determine the evolution of the geotechnical parameters from one to ten cycles of modified Proctor compaction. This test procedure is non-common for geotechnical purposes and it was found suitable and finally adopted to describe how these problematic soils behave when submitted to a multi-cyclic set of Modified Proctor compactions (OPM) [3,4]. On another hand, we propose a correlation between the traffic and the cycles of compaction considered as the repeated load. From that, this work shows the generation of active fine particles, the decrease of the CBR index and also the mechanical characteristics (mainly the Young Modulus, E) that contribute at least to the main deformation of the road structure.展开更多

The results show high ability of ANN in prediction with respect to statistical methods.
文摘Physical properties of compressed earth blocks reinforced with plastic wastes are compared to those of nonreinforced ones. However, the reinforcement had no significant effect either on bricks’ curing length or on their shrinkage.
文摘The national highways are always considered as the economic backbone of the country and have often assisted development work all along their routes. Results have shown that in a total of 20 facets, 65.28% belong to wedge failure, 22.26%?belong to toppling failure and 12.45% belong to plane failure.
文摘The Nome nickel laterite deposit is located in the North East of Albania. The chemical and mineralogical analyses, as well as the microscopic examination have shown that mineral processing by magnetic separation gives the most satisfactory results for the size fractions ǃ + 0.250 mm and ǂ.250 + 0.063 mm.
文摘The saturated hydraulic conductivity of a soil is the main parameter for modeling the water flow through the soil and determination of seepage losses. The results presented here show that the Kozeny-Carman equation provides good predictions of the hydraulic conductivity of homogenized clayey soils compacted under given compactive effort, despite the consensus set out in the literature.
文摘Facies and fracture network modeling need robust, realistic and multi scale methods that can extract and reproduce complex relations in geological structures. Examples shown in this paper give visual appealing results for the reconstruction of stationary complex struc-tures.
文摘This paper presents a comparative study of Physical-Chemical characteristics of Limestone and Basalt (from Senegalese quarries). These important results show the net advantage of Basalt compared to Limestone in terms of physical-chemical characteristics.
文摘Nickel laterites are considerable sources of nickel. According to microscopic examination the deposit can be registered as a secondary pseudo-autochthonous.
文摘Hydrate technology has advanced to greater proportions: implementing the high latent heats as refrigerant, safe carbon capture as carbon sequestration in hydrates, purifying rare gases in hydrates, and safe efficient transport of energy using rapid hydrate formation. As hydrate technology broadens, interdisciplinary fields can contribute expertise from surface science to spectroscopy leading to geological formations and engineering kinetics.
文摘The new results of geologic-structural, petrographic and mineralogic-geochemical researches of Mykert-Sanzheevka ore field—the Uda-Vitim mineragenic zone South-West ending of West Transbaikalia are given. Ore-forming system features of Mykert-Sanzheevka field are considered.
文摘The main objective of this research is to study the mechanical behaviour of tropical soils using elasto-plastic constitutive equations in the so-called limit and critical states. Indeed it supposes the model to be suitable to describe the mechanical behaviour of the considered clays.
文摘Gravel lateritic soils are intensively used in road geotechnical engineering. From that, this work shows the generation of active fine particles, the decrease of the CBR index and also the mechanical characteristics (mainly the Young Modulus, E) that contribute at least to the main deformation of the road structure.
