The nonlinear post-buckling response of functionally graded(FG)copper matrix plates enforced by graphene origami auxetic metamaterials(GOAMs)is investigated in the currentwork.The auxeticmaterial properties of the pla...The nonlinear post-buckling response of functionally graded(FG)copper matrix plates enforced by graphene origami auxetic metamaterials(GOAMs)is investigated in the currentwork.The auxeticmaterial properties of the plate are controlled by graphene content and the degree of origami folding,which are graded across the thickness of the plate.Thematerial properties of the GOAM plate are evaluated using genetic micro-mechanicalmodels.Governing nonlinear eigenvalue problems for the post-buckling response of the GOAM composite plate are derived using the virtual work principle and a four-variable nonlinear shear deformation theory.A novel differential quadrature method(DQM)algorithm is developed to solve the nonlinear eigenvalue problem.Detailed parametric studies are presented to explore the effects of graphene content,folding degree,and GO distribution patterns on the post-buckling responses of GOAM plates.Results show that high tunability in post-buckling characteristics can be achieved by using GOAM.FunctionallyGradedGraphene OrigamiAuxeticMetamaterials(FG-GOAM)plates can be used in aerospace structures to improve their structural performance and response.展开更多

Mechanical snap-through instability of bi-stable structures may find many practical applications such as state switching and energy transforming.Although there exist diverse bi-stable structures capable of snap-throug...Mechanical snap-through instability of bi-stable structures may find many practical applications such as state switching and energy transforming.Although there exist diverse bi-stable structures capable of snap-through instability,it is still difficult for a structure with high slenderness to undergo the axial snap-through instability with a large stroke.Here,an elastic structure with high slenderness is simply constructed by a finite number of identical,conventional bi-stable units with relatively low slenderness in series connection.For realizing the axial snap-through instability with a large stroke,common scissors mechanisms are further introduced as rigid constraints to guarantee the synchronous snap-through instability of these bi-stable units.The global feature of the large-stroke snap-through instability realized here is robust and even insusceptible to the local out-of-synchronization of individual units.The present design provides a simple and feasible way to achieve the large-stroke snap-through instability of slender structures,which is expected to be particularly useful for state switching and energy transforming in narrow spaces.展开更多
The buckling-guided three-dimensional(3D)assembly method has arisen increasing attention for its advantages in forming complex 3D architectures with a rich diversity of geometric shapes in a broad spectrum of inorgani...The buckling-guided three-dimensional(3D)assembly method has arisen increasing attention for its advantages in forming complex 3D architectures with a rich diversity of geometric shapes in a broad spectrum of inorganic functional materials.Such an assembly method relies on the controlled lateral bucking of a 2D precursor structure integrated with a pre-stretched substrate at selective regions.In the assembly process,the preservation or break-ing of rotational symmetry is crucial for understanding the mechanism of 2D-to-3D geometric transformation.Here,we present a fundamental study on the rotational symmetry of 3D spoke double-ring structures formed through buckling-guided assembly.An energetic method is introduced to analyze the rotational symmetry and to understand the symmetry-breaking mechanism.Such symmetry-breaking phenomenon is validated by experi-ments and finite element analyses(FEA).Phase diagrams of the deformation mode are established to shed light on the influences of various geometric parameters(e.g.,initial rotational symmetry order,radius ratio,and lo-cation of bonding sites).This work offers new insights into the underlying mechanism of 2D-to-3D geometric transformation in ribbon-type structures formed by compressive buckling.展开更多
Flexoelectricity refers to the link between electrical polarization and strain gradient fields in piezoelectric materials,particularly at the nano-scale.The present investigation aims to comprehensively focus on the s...Flexoelectricity refers to the link between electrical polarization and strain gradient fields in piezoelectric materials,particularly at the nano-scale.The present investigation aims to comprehensively focus on the static bending analysis of a piezoelectric sandwich functionally graded porous(FGP)double-curved shallow nanoshell based on the flexoelectric effect and nonlocal strain gradient theory.Two coefficients that reduce or increase the stiffness of the nanoshell,including nonlocal and length-scale parameters,are considered to change along the nanoshell thickness direction,and three different porosity rules are novel points in this study.The nanoshell structure is placed on a Pasternak elastic foundation and is made up of three separate layers of material.The outermost layers consist of piezoelectric smart material with flexoelectric effects,while the core layer is composed of FGP material.Hamilton’s principle was used in conjunction with a unique refined higher-order shear deformation theory to derive general equilibrium equations that provide more precise outcomes.The Navier and Galerkin-Vlasov methodology is used to get the static bending characteristics of nanoshells that have various boundary conditions.The program’s correctness is assessed by comparison with published dependable findings in specific instances of the model described in the article.In addition,the influence of parameters such as flexoelectric effect,nonlocal and length scale parameters,elastic foundation stiffness coefficient,porosity coefficient,and boundary conditions on the static bending response of the nanoshell is detected and comprehensively studied.The findings of this study have practical implications for the efficient design and control of comparable systems,such as micro-electromechanical and nano-electromechanical devices.展开更多
