Check dams are widely constructed on China's Loess Plateau,which had a total number of 58,776 by the end of 2019.Great achievements in check dam construction have been gained regarding the economic and environment...Check dams are widely constructed on China's Loess Plateau,which had a total number of 58,776 by the end of 2019.Great achievements in check dam construction have been gained regarding the economic and environmental impacts.This study reviews the remarkable benefits of check dams on the land reclamation and environmental improvement on the Loess Plateau,and sediment reduction entering the Yellow River.However,the flood incidents on check dams have been frequently reported for the past decades,which has attracted more attention in the context of climate change and extreme rainfall events recently.Advances in the flood migration techniques achieved by the research group led by the first author have been highlighted to migrate the breach risk of check dams due to floods.The“family tree method”has been proposed to determine the survival status and critical rainfall threshold of each check dam in the complicated dam system.An updated dam breach flood evaluation framework and the corresponding numerical algorithm(i.e.,DB-IWHR)have been developed.Moreover,innovative types of water-release facilities for check dams,including geobag stepped spillway and prestressed concrete cylinder pipe in the underlying conduit,have been proposed and developed.Finally,the perspectives concerning the check dam construction on the Loess Plateau have been put forward.展开更多
Substantial advancements have been achieved in Tunnel Boring Machine(TBM)technology and monitoring systems,yet the presence of missing data impedes accurate analysis and interpretation of TBM monitoring results.This s...Substantial advancements have been achieved in Tunnel Boring Machine(TBM)technology and monitoring systems,yet the presence of missing data impedes accurate analysis and interpretation of TBM monitoring results.This study aims to investigate the issue of missing data in extensive TBM datasets.Through a comprehensive literature review,we analyze the mechanism of missing TBM data and compare different imputation methods,including statistical analysis and machine learning algorithms.We also examine the impact of various missing patterns and rates on the efficacy of these methods.Finally,we propose a dynamic interpolation strategy tailored for TBM engineering sites.The research results show that K-Nearest Neighbors(KNN)and Random Forest(RF)algorithms can achieve good interpolation results;As the missing rate increases,the interpolation effect of different methods will decrease;The interpolation effect of block missing is poor,followed by mixed missing,and the interpolation effect of sporadic missing is the best.On-site application results validate the proposed interpolation strategy's capability to achieve robust missing value interpolation effects,applicable in ML scenarios such as parameter optimization,attitude warning,and pressure prediction.These findings contribute to enhancing the efficiency of TBM missing data processing,offering more effective support for large-scale TBM monitoring datasets.展开更多
This study aims to enhance the digital drilling process monitoring(DPM)or monitoring while drilling(MWD)technique,which is a widely recognized method in geological exploration for evaluating rock mass quality.First,ro...This study aims to enhance the digital drilling process monitoring(DPM)or monitoring while drilling(MWD)technique,which is a widely recognized method in geological exploration for evaluating rock mass quality.First,robust displacement and torque measurement facilities for rotary-core drilling are discussed.The conventional cable encoder for displacement measurement is replaced with a magnetostrictive displacement sensor,which is more reliable in harsh field drilling environments.This enables the measurement of the bit position with an accuracy of<1 mm.Most importantly,this new instrument is proven to be successful in improving the detection of structural discontinuities with thicknesses>1 mm.In addition,by measuring the electric current of the driving motor,the torque applied to the bit is conveniently and accurately converted.These innovations ensure high-quality data collection for DPM practices.Second,two indices derived from DPM are proposed to quantitatively describe rock mass quality.The specific energy index(SEI)and specific penetration index(SPI)are based on the principles of energy conservation and Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion,respectively.Extensive field tests conducted in a dam grouting area confirm a linear relationship between the thrust force and penetration per rotation,and between the torque and penetration per rotation.The correlation ratios of the related regressions are typically>0.9.These two indices allow for the quantitative interpretation of DPM data into rock mechanics characteristics,such as uniaxial compressive strength,rock quality designation(RQD),and rock mass permeability,eliminating the need for subjective judgment normally involved in the currently used rock mass quality rating approaches.展开更多
Predicting the performance of a tunneling boring machine is vitally important to avoid any possible accidents during tunneling boring.The prediction is not straightforward due to the uncertain geological conditions an...Predicting the performance of a tunneling boring machine is vitally important to avoid any possible accidents during tunneling boring.The prediction is not straightforward due to the uncertain geological conditions and the complex rock-machine interactions.Based on the big data obtained from the 72.1 km long tunnel in the Yin-Song Diversion Project in China,this study developed a machine learning model to predict the TBM performance in a real-time manner.The total thrust and the cutterhead torque during a stable period in a boring cycle was predicted in advance by using the machine-returned parameters in the rising period.A long short-term memory model was developed and its accuracy was evaluated.The results show that the variation in the total thrust and cutterhead torque with various geological conditions can be well reflected by the proposed model.This real-time predication shows superior performance than the classical theoretical model in which only a single value can be obtained based on the single measurement of the rock properties.To improve the accuracy of the model a filtering process was proposed.Results indicate that filtering the unnecessary parameters can enhance both the accuracy and the computational efficiency.Finally,the data deficiency was discussed by assuming a parameter was missing.It is found that the missing of a key parameter can significantly reduce the accuracy of the model,while the supplement of a parameter that highly-correlated with the missing one can improve the prediction.展开更多

Damage and threats to hydraulic and submarine structures by underwater explosions(UNDEXs)have raised much attention.The centrifuge model test,compared to prototype test,is a more promising way to examine the problem w...Damage and threats to hydraulic and submarine structures by underwater explosions(UNDEXs)have raised much attention.The centrifuge model test,compared to prototype test,is a more promising way to examine the problem while reducing cost and satisfying the similitude requirements of both Mach and Froude numbers simultaneously.This study used a systematic approach employing centrifuge model tests and numerical simulations to investigate the effects of UNDEXs on an air-backed steel plate.Nineteen methodical centrifuge tests of UNDEXs were conducted.The shock wave pressure,bubble oscillation pressure,acceleration and the strain of the air-backed steel plate were recorded and compared with numerical studies using the finite element analysis(FEA)commercial software ABAQUS.By implementing empirically derived and physically measured pressures into the numerical models,the effects of the shock wave and bubble oscillation on the steel plate were investigated.Generally,the numerical results were in agreement with the experimental results.These results showed that the peak pressure of an UNDEX has a significant effect on the peak acceleration of the steel plate and that the impulse of the UNDEX pressure governs the peak strain of the steel plate.展开更多
In this study,systematic centrifuge experiments and numerical studies are conducted to investigate the effect of shock loads due to an underwater explosion on the dynamic responses of an air-backed steel plate.Numeric...In this study,systematic centrifuge experiments and numerical studies are conducted to investigate the effect of shock loads due to an underwater explosion on the dynamic responses of an air-backed steel plate.Numerical simulations with three different models of pressure time history generated by underwater explosion were carried out.The first model of pressure time history was measured in test.The second model to predict the time history of shock wave pressure from an underwater explosion was created by Cole in 1948.Coefficients of Cole's formulas are determined experimentally.The third model was developed by Zamyshlyaev and Yakovlev in 1973.All of them are implemented into the numerical model to calculate the shock responses of the plate.Simulated peak strains obtained from the three models are compared with the experimental results,yielding average relative differences of 21.39%,45.73%,and 13.92%,respectively.The Russell error technique is used to quantitatively analyze the correlation between the numerical and experimental results.Quantitative analysis shows that the simulated strains for most measurement points on the steel plate are acceptable.By changing the scaled distances,different shock impulses were obtained and exerted on the steel plate.Systematic numerical studies are performed to investigate the effect of the accumulated shock impulse on the peak strains.The numerical and experimental results suggest that the peak strains are strongly dependent on the accumulated shock impulse.展开更多
