Air pollution in China covers a large area with complex sources and formation mechanisms,making it a unique place to conduct air pollution and atmospheric chemistry research.The National Natural Science Foundation of China’s Major Research Plan entitled“Fundamental Researches on the Formation and Response Mechanism of the Air Pollution Complex in China”(or the Plan)has funded 76 research projects to explore the causes of air pollution in China,and the key processes of air pollution in atmospheric physics and atmospheric chemistry.In order to summarize the abundant data from the Plan and exhibit the long-term impacts domestically and internationally,an integration project is responsible for collecting the various types of data generated by the 76 projects of the Plan.This project has classified and integrated these data,forming eight categories containing 258 datasets and 15 technical reports in total.The integration project has led to the successful establishment of the China Air Pollution Data Center(CAPDC)platform,providing storage,retrieval,and download services for the eight categories.This platform has distinct features including data visualization,related project information querying,and bilingual services in both English and Chinese,which allows for rapid searching and downloading of data and provides a solid foundation of data and support for future related research.Air pollution control in China,especially in the past decade,is undeniably a global exemplar,and this data center is the first in China to focus on research into the country’s air pollution complex. 展开更多

Degradation of bisphenol F by peroxymonosulfate activated with palladium-based catalysts

In this study,supported Pd catalysts were prepared and used as heterogeneous catalysts for the activation of peroxymonosulfate(PMS)which successfully degrade bisphenol F(BPF).Among the supported catalysts(i.e.,Pd/SiO_(2),Pd/CeO_(2),Pd/TiO_(2)and Pd/Al2O3),Pd/TiO_(2)exhibited the highest catalytic activity due to the high isoelectric point and high Pd0 content.Pd/TiO_(2)prepared by the deposition method leads to high Pd dispersion,which are the key factors for efficient BPF degradation.The influencing factors were investigated during the reaction process and two possible degradation pathways were proposed.Density functional theory(DFT)calculations demonstrate that stronger BPF adsorption and BPF degradation with lower reaction barrier occurs on smaller Pd particles.The catalytic activities are strongly dependent on the structural features of the catalysts.Both experiments and theoretical calculations prove that the reaction is actuated by electron transfer rather than radicals. 展开更多

Brown carbon(BrC)is one of the important light absorption substances that have high light absorption ability under short wavelength light.However,limit studies have focused on the BrC emission from ships.In this study,size-segregated particulate matters(PM)were collected from three different types of ships,light absorption characteristics and size distribution of methanol-soluble BrC and water-soluble BrC in PM from ship exhausts were investigated.Results showed that four-stroke low-power diesel fishing boat(4-LDF)had the highest mass concentrations of methanol-soluble organic carbon(MSOC)and water-soluble organic carbon(WSOC),followed by 2-stroke high-power heavy-fuel-oil vessel(2-HHV),and fourstroke high-power marine-diesel vessel(4-HMV).While 2-HHV had obviously higher light absorption coefficients of methanol-soluble BrC(Abs365,M)and water-soluble BrC(Abs365,W)in unit weight of PM than the other two types of ships.The tested ships presented comparable or higher absorption efficiency of BrC in water extracts(MAE365,W)compared with other BrC emission sources.Majority of BrC was concentrated in fine particles,and the particle size distributions of both Abs365,Mand Abs365,Wshowed bimodal patterns,peaking at0.43–0.65μm and 4.7–5.8μm,respectively.However,different particle size distributions were found for MAE365,Mbetween diesel and heavy fuel oil ships.Besides,different wavelength dependence in particles with different size were also detected.Ship exhaust could be confirmed as a non-ignorable BrC emission source,and complex influencing factor could affect the light absorption characteristics of ship emissions.Particle size should also be considered when light absorption ability of BrC was evaluated. 展开更多

Intermediate volatility organic compounds(IVOCs)are crucial precursors of secondary organic aerosol(SOA).In this study,gaseous IVOCs emitted from a ship main engine burning heavy fuel oil(HFO)were investigated on a test bench,which could simulate the real-world operations and emissions of ocean-going ships.The chemical compositions,emission factors(EFs)and volatility distributions of IVOC emissions were investigated.The results showed that the main engine burning HFO emitted a large amount of IVOCs,with average IVOC EFs of 20.2-201 mg/kg-fuel.The IVOCs were mainly comprised of unspeciated compounds.The chemical compositions of exhaust IVOCs were different from that of HFO fuel,especially for polycyclic aromatic compounds and alkylcyclohexanes.The volatility distributions of IVOCs were also different between HFO exhausts and HFO fuel.The distinctions in IVOC emission characteristics between HFO exhausts and HFO fuel should be considered when assessing the IVOC emission and related SOA formation potentials from ocean-going ships burning HFO,especially when using fuel-surrogate models. 展开更多

Ship auxiliary engines contribute large amounts of air pollutants when at berth.Biodiesel,including that from waste cooking oil(WCO),can favor a reduction in the emission of primary pollutant when used with internal combustion engines.This study investigated the emissions of gaseous intermediate-volatile organic compounds(IVOCs)between WCO biodiesel and marine gas oil(MGO)to further understand the differences in secondary organic aerosol(SOA)production of exhausts.Results revealed that WCO exhaust exhibited similar IVOC composition and volatility distribution to MGO exhaust,despite the differences between fuel contents.While WCO biodiesel could reduce IVOC emissions by 50%as compared to MGO,and thus reduced the SOA production from IVOCs.The compositions and volatility distributions of exhaust IVOCs varied to those of their fuels,implying that fuel-component-based SOA predicting model should be used with more cautions when assessing SOA production of WCO and MGO exhausts.WCO biodiesel is a cleaner fuel comparing to conventional MGO on ship auxiliary engines with regard to the reductions in gaseous IVOC emissions and corresponding SOA productions.Although the tests were conducted on test bench,the results could be considered as representative due to the widely applications of the test engine and MGO fuel on real-world ships. 展开更多

Purpose:.To evaluate the effect of preoperative visits on patients′ psychology, physiology, and behavior during the perioperative period of eye surgery under local anesthesia, with the aim of enhancing patients′ cooperation with the surgery and improving their degree of satisfaction.Methods:.A total of 240 patients scheduled to undergo eye surgery between August and October 2013 were randomly divided into an observation(n = 120) and a control(n = 120)group..Patients in the observation group attended preoperative visits with nurses and received conventional nursing care. The control group received only conventional nursing.Results:.The Zung self-rating anxiety scale(SAS) scores were significantly lower in patients from the observation group than in the control group(P<0.05). Surgeons operating on the observation group were more satisfied with their patients′ cooperation with the surgery than were surgeons operating on the controls(P<0.01). Patients in the observation group had a significantly higher degree of satisfaction in terms of work efficiency in the operating room(P<0.01).Conclusion:.Preoperative visits by patients scheduled to undergo eye surgery can effectively mitigate preoperative anxiety in those patients,.build up a positive attitude toward the upcoming surgery,.instruct the patients to coordinate with the surgery,.enhance surgical safety,.and improve the patients′degree of satisfaction regarding the nursing care in the operating room. 展开更多

Analysis of Physico-Chemical Characteristics of Effluents from Beverage Industry in Ethiopia

Beverage industries are one of the most polluting industries producing huge amount of wastewater effluents. These industries have been recognized to cause pollution by discharging effluent into receiving environment especially to the nearby rivers. The aim of this study is to determine the status of waste water effluent discharge of beverage industry in Ethiopia. Samples were collected from 8 beverage industries’ wastewater effluent discharge end pipe and examined for different physico-Chemical parameters such as: COD, BOD5, TSS, ammonia, total nitrogen, PH and phosphate. The observed values were ranged between 9 - 397.5 mg/L for TSS, 0.185 - 69.7 mg/l for phosphate, 0.265 - 71 mg/l for ammonia, 226 - 1975 mg/l for COD, 15 - 576 mg/L for BOD, 4 - 86.6 mg/l for total nitrogen and 5.21 - 12.37 for PH. The finding of the study revealed that most of the beverage industries were extremely high amount of total suspended solids (TSS), BOD and COD effluent discharge were found above the Ethiopian beverage industry effluent discharge limit value. Half of the sampled beverage industries’ effluent discharge of PH, total nitrogen, ammonia and phosphate were found within the limit value while the rest of the industries are still discharging their effluent above the national standard limit value. The continuous discharge of effluents into rivers without any additional treatment raises the level of pollution and toxicity, which have significantly adverse impact on the aquatic environment. 展开更多

The rainfall forecast performance of the Tropical Cyclone(TC)version Model of Global and Regional Assimilation PrEdiction System(GRAPESTCM)of the China Meteorological Administration for landfalling Super Typhoon Lekima(2019)is studied by using the object-oriented verification method of contiguous rain area(CRA).The major error sources and possible reasons for the rainfall forecast uncertainties in different landfall stages(including near landfall and moving further inland)are compared.Results show that different performance and errors of rainfall forecast exist in the different TC stages.In the near landfall stage the asymmetric rainfall distribution is hard to be simulated,which might be related to the too strong forecasted TC intensity and too weak vertical wind shear accompanied.As Lekima moves further inland,the rain pattern and volume errors gradually increase.The Equitable Threat Score of the 24 h forecasted rainfall over 100 mm declines quickly with the time-length over land.The diagnostic analysis shows that there exists an interaction between the TC and the mid-latitude westerlies,but too weak frontogenesis is simulated.The results of this research indicate that for the current numerical model,the forecast ability of persistent heavy rainfall is very limited,especially when the weakened landing TC moves further inland. 展开更多

Dissolved black carbon(DBC)includes the water-soluble component of black carbon and/or its degradation products.It is a hydrophobic organic compound due to its thick cyclic aromatic structure and can therefore be present as particulate DBC(PDBC)on suspended particulate matter or particulate organic matter.PDBC is not equivalent to particulate black carbon(PBC)and is thus often overlooked when researchers measure PBC in particulate matter using current conventional methods.Consequently,the amount of DBC in nature is likely underestimated in many studies and the reliability of current findings on the geochemical behavior of DBC is subject to challenge.In this study,we attempted to draw the solid-liquid partition coefficient(K_(d),PDBC/DBC)based on detailed data on PBC,DBC,particulate organic carbon,total suspended solids,dissolved polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons,and particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the surface waters of the Bohai Sea.The obtained K_(d)was in the range of 0.018-0.072.Accordingly,the concentrations of PDBC were 1.637-6.449μg C L^(-1).The estimated inventory of PDBC on suspended particulate matter in the Bohai Sea was 2.049-8.194 Gg,which was lower than that of PBC(15.16 Gg)but of the same order of magnitude.These results indicate that PDBC is an important form of DBC in the Bohai Sea.Quantitative results of DBC fluxes between the dissolved and particulate phases will benefit our understanding of DBC transport and fates in the ocean. 展开更多

Recently,the triboelectric nanogenerator(TENG)has been widely studied for the development of flexible and wearable electronics.Among the various methods for TENG modification,melting nearfield direct writing is a new method to fabricate solid-liquid TENG.Here,the electrospun PCL was introduced with traditional polymers to fabricate the compound solid triboelectric layer,and water,dimethicone and GaIn were chosen as the liquid triboelectric layers.In this paper,the solid substrate effect,temperature gradient effect,and the liquid substrate effect were compared in terms of TENGs.A free-standing model of TENG is employed in this paper,and the charge generated by the PCL-PI composite solid triboelectrical solid layer is more than 10 times higher than the pristine one,showing the high charge generating ability to melt near-field direct written microfibers.Furthermore,detailed investigation will be discussed how we can get a high the out-circuit voltage and short-circuit current. 展开更多
