“A meditative Buddha”:alienated silence and Zen paradox in Heart of Darkness

Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness repeatedly likens its narrator,Marlow,to a silent Buddha,infusing the novel with a distinct Zen undertone.Through the interplay of“silence”and“Buddha imagery,”the novel constructs a profound philosophical narrative that critiques the violent essence of colonialism while exposing the spiritual alienation of modernity.This essay employs a genealogical approach to dissect the novel’s“silence”into three dimensions—natural silence,interpersonal silence,and ontological silence—exploring its mirroring relationship with Zen thought and revealing how Conrad uses alienation of silence to depict the cognitive crises of modern individuals.It also examines the dual Buddha figures of Marlow and Kurtz,analyzing the spiritual degradation of Western colonizers.The study demonstrates that Conrad’s conception of silence starkly contrasts with Zen—where Zen’s silence leads to enlightenment,colonial alienated silence becomes complicit with power or descends into nihilistic abyss.Through this contrast,the novel not only deconstructs the hypocrisy of European civilization but also interrogates the epistemological dilemmas of modernity itself. 展开更多

They published a brain-machine interface platform which consists of a group of flexible arrays for sensing, a neurosurgical robot for localization, and an electronic chip for low-power data acquisition [1].
