Implanting iodine-125 seeds into rat dorsal root ganglion for neuropathic pain: neuronal microdamage without impacting hind limb motion

The use of iodine-125 (L251) in cancer treatment has been shown to relieve patients' pain. Consid- ering dorsal root ganglia are critical for neural transmission between the peripheral and central nervous systems, we assumed that 125I could be implanted into rat dorsal root ganglia to provide relief for neuropathic pain. 125I seeds with different radioactivity (0, 14.8, 29.6 MBq) were im- planted separately through L4-5 and L5-6 intervertebral foramen into the vicinity of the L5 dorsal root ganglion, von Frey hair results demonstrated the mechanical pain threshold was elevated after implanting 125I seeds from the high radioactivity group. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that nuclear membrane shrinkage, nucleolar margination, widespread mitochondrial swelling, partial vacuolization, lysosome increase, and partial endoplasmic reticulum dilation were visible at 1,440 hours in the low radioactivity group and at 336 hours in the high radio- activity group. Abundant nuclear membrane shrinkage, partial fuzzy nuclear membrane and endoplasmic reticulum necrosis were observed at 1,440 hours in the high radioactivity group. No significant difference in combined behavioral scores was detected between preoperation and postoperation in the low and high radioactivity groups. These results suggested that the mechan- ical pain threshold was elevated after implanting 125I seeds without influencing motor functions of the hind limb, although cell injury was present. 展开更多

The poor outdoor operating conditions of household photovoltaic(PV)make the power station prone to various faults.However,the dispersion of household PV installations often increases the difficulty and cost of operation and maintenance(O&M).Although the remote monitoring and fault detection of a PV power station can be realized by the use of operation data,the particularity of a household power station also brings many problems to fault detection.In this study,we propose a shading fault detection method of household PV power based on inherent characteristics of monthly string current data mapping.The ideal current peak obtained by a new fitting method is used to normalize string current data.The current probability density function(PDF)at each time point is estimated by kernel density estimation(KDE).Through the normalized current data corresponding to the maximum probability density,the inherent characteristics of the strings are obtained,such that whether the strings have shading can be judged and the shading degree can then be evaluated.Not only are no additional sensors needed to collect environmental data,such as irradiation and temperature,but also simulating the detailed parameters of the power station is not required.The interference caused by meteorological factors can thus be eliminated,which can be easily used in old power stations and newly constructed power stations.The effectiveness and performance of the proposed shading fault detection method is verified by experimental data collected from the actual household PV power station.Index Terms-Data fitting,fault detection,household photovoltaic(PV),kernel density estimation(KDE),shading degree. 展开更多

White radish polyphenols improve diet-induced obesity by regulating the metabolism of bile acids via gut-liver axis

Natural plant or functional food-derived biologically active ingredients have recently raised considerable interest in their antiobesity effect.However,the antiobesity role of polyphenols of white radish roots remains unknown.This study examined the therapeutic efficacy and underlying mechanisms of polyphenols extract from white radish roots(RPE)on obese mice.RPE administration significantly decreased the weight gain in high-fat diet(HFD)fed mouse models.RPE intervention also increased serum glutathione transferase and superoxide dismutase levels,and decreased malondialdehyde,tumor necrosis factor-a and lipopolysaccharide levels in the HFD-fed mice.The intervention led to an escalation in the proportion of beneficial bacteria(Akkermansia,Clostridia),and a corresponding decline in the fraction of harmful bacteria(Proteobacteria).According to liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based gut metabolomics,the RPE intervention notably influenced several metabolic pathways,including those involved in protein digestion and absorption,centralcarbon metabolism related to cancer,and the biosynthesis of steroid hormones.Additionally,RPE treatment led to a reduction in the intestinal microbes possessing bile-salt hydrolase activity,whereas increased the expression levels of the bile acid(BA)synthesis enzyme cholesterol 7a-hydroxylase(Cyp7a1).This led to increase hepatic production and fecal excretion of BAs,reduce hepatic cholesterol,and decrease lipogenesis.Treated HDF-fed mice showed mitigation of hepatic steatosis and inflammation through gut-liver axis modulation by RPE interference.These findings together offer a significant understanding of the potential of RPE as an anti-obesity treatment and could assist in developing strategies for weight loss. 展开更多
