The hydrocarbon fuels contain n-alkanes from CH4 to C16H34. The basic diffusion flame structures are demonstrated, analyzed, and compared. The effects of pressure, and strain rate on the flame behavior and energy-release rate for each fuel are examined systematically. The detailed chemical kinetic reaction mechanisms from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) are employed, and the largest one of them contains 2115 species and 8157 reversible reactions. The results indicate for all of the fuels the flame thickness and heat release rate correlate well with the square root of the pressure multiplied by the strain rate. Under the condition of any strain rate and pressure, H2 has thicker flame than hydrocarbons, while the hydrocarbons have the similar temperature and main products distributions and almost have the same flame thickness and heat release rate. The result indicates that the fuels composed with these hydrocarbons will still have the same flame properties as any pure n-alkane fuel.展开更多

To facilitate this transformation, significantly extended design freedom and knowledge must be available in the early design stages. This paper presents a high-fidelity framework for design and optimization of the liquid swirl injectors that are widely used in aerospace propulsion and power-generation systems. The framework assembles a set of techniques, including Design Of Experiment(DOE), high-fidelity Large Eddy Simulations(LES), machine learning, Proper Orthogonal Decomposition(POD)-based Kriging surrogate modeling(emulation), inverse problem optimization, and uncertainty quantification. LES-based simulations can reveal detailed spatiotemporal evolution of flow structures and flame dynamics in a high-fidelity manner, and identify important injector design parameters according to their effects on propellant mixing, flame stabilization, and thermal protection. For a given a space of design parameters, DOE determines the number of design points to perform LES-based simulations. POD-based emulations, trained by the LES database, can effectively explore the design space and deduce an optimal group of design parameters in a turn-around time that is reduced by three orders of magnitude. The accuracy of the emulated results is validated, and the uncertainty of prediction is quantified. The proposed design methodology is expected to profoundly extend the knowledge base and reduce the cost for initial design stages.展开更多

The fluid thermodynamic and transport properties vary drasti- cally and exhibit anomalies in the near-critical regime. These anomalies can cause distinctive effects on heat-transfer and fluid-flow characteristics. To focus on the influence of ther- modynamics on the flow field, a relatively low injection Reynolds number of 1 750 is adopted. For comparisons, a reference case with the same configuration and Reynolds number is simulated in the ideal gas regime. The model accommodates full conservation laws, real-fluid thermody- namic and transport phenomena. Results reveal that the flow features of the near-critical fluid jet are significantly differ- ent from their counterpart. The near-critical fluid jet spreads faster and mixes more efficiently with the ambient fluid along with a more rapidly development of the vortex pairing pro- cess. Detailed analysis at different streamwise locations in- cluding both the flat shear-layer region and fully developed vortex region reveals the important effect of volume dilata- tion and baroclinic torque in the near-critical fluid case. The former disturbs the shear layer and makes it more unstable. The volume dilatation and baroclinic effects strengthen the vorticity and stimulate the vortex rolling up and pairing pro- cess展开更多

In order to ensure durable and reliable operation, effective cooling mea-sures must be applied to the high-temperature rotating components, including turbine bladesand turbine disks. Cooling technology, however, is one of the most challenging problems inthis field. The present work reviews the current state of cooling technology research, at boththe fundamental science and engineering implementation levels, including modeling and simu-lation, experiments and diagnostics, and cooling technologies for blades and disks. In numericalsimulation, the RANS approach remains the most commonly used technique for flow-dynamicsand heat-transfer simulations. Much attention has been given to the development of improvedturbulence modeling for flows under rotation. For measurement and diagnostics, advancedinstrumentation and rotating-flow test facilities have been developed and valuable experimentaldata obtained. Detailed velocity and temperature distributions in rotating boundary layers havebeen obtained at scales sufficient to resolve various underlying mechanisms. Both isothermaland non-isothermal conditions have been considered, and the effects of Coriolis and buoyancyforces on flow evolution and heat transfer quantitatively identified. Cooling technologies havebeen improved by optimizing cooling passage dsigns, especially for curved configurations un-der rotation. Novel methods such as lamellar cooling and micro-scale cooling were proposed, and their effectiveness evaluated. For disk/cavity cooling, efforts were mainly focused on rotor-stator systems, with special attention given to the position of air injection into disks.展开更多
