Potassium(K),calcium(Ca),and magnesium(Mg)are essential elements with important physiological functions in plants.Previous studies showed that leaf K,Ca,and Mg concentrations generally increase with increasing latitud...Potassium(K),calcium(Ca),and magnesium(Mg)are essential elements with important physiological functions in plants.Previous studies showed that leaf K,Ca,and Mg concentrations generally increase with increasing latitudes.However,recent meta-analyses suggested the possibility of a unimodal pattern in the concentrations of these elements along latitudinal gradients.The authenticity of this unimodal latitudinal pattern,however,requires validation through large-scale field experimental data,and exploration of the underlying mechanisms if the pattern is confirmed.Here,we collected leaves of common species of woody plants from 19 montane forests in the north-south transect of eastern China,including 322 species from 160 genera,67 families;and then determined leaf K,Ca,and Mg concentrations to explore their latitudinal patterns and driving mechanisms.Our results support unimodal latitudinal patterns for all three elements in woody plants across eastern China,with peak values at latitude 36.5±1.0°N.The shift of plant-functional-type compositions from evergreen broadleaves to deciduous broadleaves and to conifers along this latitudinal span was the key factor contributing to these patterns.Climatic factors,mainly temperature,and to a lesser extent solar radiation and precipitation,were the main environmental drivers.These factors,by altering the composition of plant communities and regulating plant physiological activities,influence the latitudinal patterns of plant nutrient concentrations.Our findings also suggest that high leaf K,Ca,and Mg concentrations may represent an adaptive strategy for plants to withstand water stress,which might be used to predict plant nutrient responses to climate changes at large scales,and broaden the understanding of biogeochemical cycling of K,Ca,and Mg.展开更多

To compare current methods of pretreatment/determination for plant foliar pH,we proposed a method for longperiod sample preservation with little interference with the stability of foliar pH.Four hundred leaf samples f...To compare current methods of pretreatment/determination for plant foliar pH,we proposed a method for longperiod sample preservation with little interference with the stability of foliar pH.Four hundred leaf samples from 20 species were collected and four methods of pH determination were used:refrigerated(stored at 4°C for 4 days),frozen(stored at−16°C for 4 days),oven-dried and fresh green-leaf pH(control).To explore the effects of different leaf:water mixing ratio on the pH determination results,we measured oven-dried green-leaf pH by leaf:water volume ratio of 1:8 and mass ratio of 1:10,and measured frozen senesced-leaf pH by mass ratio of 1:10 and 1:15.The standard major axis regression was used to analyze the relationship and the conversion equation between the measured pH with different methods.Foliar pH of refrigerated and frozen green leaves did not signifcantly differ from that of fresh green-leaf,but drying always overrated fresh green-leaf pH.During the feld sampling,cryopreservation with a portable refrigerator was an advisable choice to get a precise pH.For long-duration feld sampling,freezing was the optimal choice,and refrigeration is the best choice for the shorttime preservation.The different leaf:water mixing ratio signifcantly infuenced the measured foliar pH.High dilution reduced the proton concentration and increased the measured pH.Our fndings provide the conversion relationships between the existing pretreatment and measurement methods,and establish a connection among pH determined by different methods.Our study can facilitate foliar pH measurement,thus contributing to understanding of this interesting plant functional trait.展开更多
Background Soil fauna is an important driver of carbon(C)and nitrogen(N)release from decomposing litter in forest ecosystems.However,its role in C and N cycling concerning climate and litter traits remains less known....Background Soil fauna is an important driver of carbon(C)and nitrogen(N)release from decomposing litter in forest ecosystems.However,its role in C and N cycling concerning climate and litter traits remains less known.In a 4-year field experiment,we evaluated the effects of soil fauna on litter C and N release across an elevation gradient(453,945,3023,and 3582 m)and litter traits(coniferous vs.broadleaf)in southwestern China.Results Our results showed that N was retained by–0.4%to 31.5%,but C was immediately released during the early stage(156–516 days)of decomposition for most litter species.Soil fauna significantly increased the peak N content and N retention across litter species,but reduced the C/N ratio for certain species(i.e.,Juniperus saltuaria,Betula albosinensis,Quercus acutissima,and Pinus massoniana litter),leading to more C and N being released from decomposing litter across the elevation gradient.Contributions of soil fauna to C and N release were 3.87–9.90%and 1.10–8.71%,respectively,across litter species after 4 years of decomposition.Soil environment and initial litter quality factors caused by elevation directly affected litter C and N release.Changes in soil fauna resulting from elevation and fauna exclusion factors had a direct or indirect impact on C and N release during litter decomposition.Conclusions Our findings suggest that soil fauna promote C and N release from decomposing litter in different magnitudes,mainly controlled by environmental conditions(i.e.,temperature and moisture),litter quality(i.e.,lignin and cellulose content,and lignin/cellulose),and its diversity across the elevation gradient.展开更多
Aims Foliar pH of terrestrial plants,a trait tightly associated with plant physiology and nutrient utilization,varies with plant functional types(PFTs)and environmental changes.However,it is yet unclear about the vari...Aims Foliar pH of terrestrial plants,a trait tightly associated with plant physiology and nutrient utilization,varies with plant functional types(PFTs)and environmental changes.However,it is yet unclear about the variation in foliar pH of aquatic plants,and the difference between aquatic and terrestrial plants.Methods Foliar pH,leaf carbon,nitrogen content of plants along the lakeshore zones and the environmental conditions(water or soil pH,water status)of the corresponding vegetation of three small plateau lakes were investigated,to determine the variation and potential influence factors of foliar pH at both PFT and community levels.Important Findings Foliar pH varied largely among aquatic plants,and across aquatic,helophytic and terrestrial plants.Floating-leaved macrophytes had more acidic foliage(pH=4.21±0.05)than emergent(5.71±0.07)and submerged macrophytes(5.82±0.06).Foliar pH of aquatic herbs(5.43±0.10)was lower than that of helophytic(6.12±0.07)and terrestrial herbs(5.74±0.05).Terrestrial herbs had significantly higher foliar pH than woody plants.The variation in foliar pH across PFTs may be mainly ascribed to leaf structure,light utilization and nutrient characteristics.Consistent with the pattern on PFT level,aquatic communities had more acidic foliage than terrestrial communities,which was mainly shaped by species composition,water status and environmental pH.This study documented the first-time foliar pH of aquatic plants,and comparison of foliar pH among various plant types at a landscape scale.Our results provide bases for further exploration of the underlying mechanism and its ecological significance for wetland ecosystems.展开更多
As a key functional trait affecting many physiological processes,leaf pH is closely related to other leaf traits at the local scale.Nevertheless,whether and how leaf pH is linked with other leaf functional traits acro...As a key functional trait affecting many physiological processes,leaf pH is closely related to other leaf traits at the local scale.Nevertheless,whether and how leaf pH is linked with other leaf functional traits across geographic scales remains unclear.A field survey in northern China was conducted to investigate the relationships between leaf pH and some key leaf structural(specific leaf area,SLA;leaf dry matter content,LDMC)and chemical traits(elemental concentrations;total dissolved solids,TDS;practical salinity),as well as the effects of environmental factors on these relationships.Our results showed that the trait coordination may vary in degree or direction across eco-geographic regions(arid vs.non-arid regions)and life-forms(woody vs.herbaceous plants).Generally,leaf pH was negatively related to SLA,but positively related to TDS and salinity.However,leaf pH and LDMC were negatively correlated in arid regions but positively correlated in non-arid regions;leaf pH covaried with N(similarly,with Ca,Mg and Na)in the same direction for both herbaceous and woody plants in arid regions,but not in non-arid regions.Climatic factors mainly influenced the relationships of leaf pH with leaf Ca and Fe concentrations,while soil factors mostly affected those with leaf P,Ca and Mn concentrations.Our findings highlight the divergent coordination between leaf pH and other leaf traits across life-forms and eco-geographic regions and may shed light on the in-depth understanding of the role of acid-base balance in plant eco-physiological processes and ecological adaptation over biogeographic scales.展开更多

文摘To compare current methods of pretreatment/determination for plant foliar pH,we proposed a method for longperiod sample preservation with little interference with the stability of foliar pH.Four hundred leaf samples from 20 species were collected and four methods of pH determination were used:refrigerated(stored at 4°C for 4 days),frozen(stored at−16°C for 4 days),oven-dried and fresh green-leaf pH(control).To explore the effects of different leaf:water mixing ratio on the pH determination results,we measured oven-dried green-leaf pH by leaf:water volume ratio of 1:8 and mass ratio of 1:10,and measured frozen senesced-leaf pH by mass ratio of 1:10 and 1:15.The standard major axis regression was used to analyze the relationship and the conversion equation between the measured pH with different methods.Foliar pH of refrigerated and frozen green leaves did not signifcantly differ from that of fresh green-leaf,but drying always overrated fresh green-leaf pH.During the feld sampling,cryopreservation with a portable refrigerator was an advisable choice to get a precise pH.For long-duration feld sampling,freezing was the optimal choice,and refrigeration is the best choice for the shorttime preservation.The different leaf:water mixing ratio signifcantly infuenced the measured foliar pH.High dilution reduced the proton concentration and increased the measured pH.Our fndings provide the conversion relationships between the existing pretreatment and measurement methods,and establish a connection among pH determined by different methods.Our study can facilitate foliar pH measurement,thus contributing to understanding of this interesting plant functional trait.

文摘Background Soil fauna is an important driver of carbon(C)and nitrogen(N)release from decomposing litter in forest ecosystems.However,its role in C and N cycling concerning climate and litter traits remains less known.In a 4-year field experiment,we evaluated the effects of soil fauna on litter C and N release across an elevation gradient(453,945,3023,and 3582 m)and litter traits(coniferous vs.broadleaf)in southwestern China.Results Our results showed that N was retained by–0.4%to 31.5%,but C was immediately released during the early stage(156–516 days)of decomposition for most litter species.Soil fauna significantly increased the peak N content and N retention across litter species,but reduced the C/N ratio for certain species(i.e.,Juniperus saltuaria,Betula albosinensis,Quercus acutissima,and Pinus massoniana litter),leading to more C and N being released from decomposing litter across the elevation gradient.Contributions of soil fauna to C and N release were 3.87–9.90%and 1.10–8.71%,respectively,across litter species after 4 years of decomposition.Soil environment and initial litter quality factors caused by elevation directly affected litter C and N release.Changes in soil fauna resulting from elevation and fauna exclusion factors had a direct or indirect impact on C and N release during litter decomposition.Conclusions Our findings suggest that soil fauna promote C and N release from decomposing litter in different magnitudes,mainly controlled by environmental conditions(i.e.,temperature and moisture),litter quality(i.e.,lignin and cellulose content,and lignin/cellulose),and its diversity across the elevation gradient.

文摘Aims Foliar pH of terrestrial plants,a trait tightly associated with plant physiology and nutrient utilization,varies with plant functional types(PFTs)and environmental changes.However,it is yet unclear about the variation in foliar pH of aquatic plants,and the difference between aquatic and terrestrial plants.Methods Foliar pH,leaf carbon,nitrogen content of plants along the lakeshore zones and the environmental conditions(water or soil pH,water status)of the corresponding vegetation of three small plateau lakes were investigated,to determine the variation and potential influence factors of foliar pH at both PFT and community levels.Important Findings Foliar pH varied largely among aquatic plants,and across aquatic,helophytic and terrestrial plants.Floating-leaved macrophytes had more acidic foliage(pH=4.21±0.05)than emergent(5.71±0.07)and submerged macrophytes(5.82±0.06).Foliar pH of aquatic herbs(5.43±0.10)was lower than that of helophytic(6.12±0.07)and terrestrial herbs(5.74±0.05).Terrestrial herbs had significantly higher foliar pH than woody plants.The variation in foliar pH across PFTs may be mainly ascribed to leaf structure,light utilization and nutrient characteristics.Consistent with the pattern on PFT level,aquatic communities had more acidic foliage than terrestrial communities,which was mainly shaped by species composition,water status and environmental pH.This study documented the first-time foliar pH of aquatic plants,and comparison of foliar pH among various plant types at a landscape scale.Our results provide bases for further exploration of the underlying mechanism and its ecological significance for wetland ecosystems.

文摘As a key functional trait affecting many physiological processes,leaf pH is closely related to other leaf traits at the local scale.Nevertheless,whether and how leaf pH is linked with other leaf functional traits across geographic scales remains unclear.A field survey in northern China was conducted to investigate the relationships between leaf pH and some key leaf structural(specific leaf area,SLA;leaf dry matter content,LDMC)and chemical traits(elemental concentrations;total dissolved solids,TDS;practical salinity),as well as the effects of environmental factors on these relationships.Our results showed that the trait coordination may vary in degree or direction across eco-geographic regions(arid vs.non-arid regions)and life-forms(woody vs.herbaceous plants).Generally,leaf pH was negatively related to SLA,but positively related to TDS and salinity.However,leaf pH and LDMC were negatively correlated in arid regions but positively correlated in non-arid regions;leaf pH covaried with N(similarly,with Ca,Mg and Na)in the same direction for both herbaceous and woody plants in arid regions,but not in non-arid regions.Climatic factors mainly influenced the relationships of leaf pH with leaf Ca and Fe concentrations,while soil factors mostly affected those with leaf P,Ca and Mn concentrations.Our findings highlight the divergent coordination between leaf pH and other leaf traits across life-forms and eco-geographic regions and may shed light on the in-depth understanding of the role of acid-base balance in plant eco-physiological processes and ecological adaptation over biogeographic scales.
