Orchids are horticultural plants with significant ornamental and economic value.Increasing market circulation and rising trade in orchids is forcing breeders to develop varieties with unique characteristics,including ...Orchids are horticultural plants with significant ornamental and economic value.Increasing market circulation and rising trade in orchids is forcing breeders to develop varieties with unique characteristics,including flower color,morphology,and resistance using a range of approaches,including traditional and molecular breeding.Advances in high-throughput technologies have generated extensive data sets with greater sequencing depths and broader coverage,providing the potential for discovering new genes/pathways that give rise to key traits.Several attempts have been made to use emerging molecular and omics methods to accelerate the breeding process in certain of the commercially valuable orchids.This review consolidates current approaches and achievements in orchid breeding and discusses their future applications for improving the resistance,ornamental,and other valuable characteristics of these plants.展开更多
Selective reductive amination of carbonyl compounds with high activity is very essential for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry,but scarcely successful paradigm was reported via efficient photocatalytic reaction...Selective reductive amination of carbonyl compounds with high activity is very essential for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry,but scarcely successful paradigm was reported via efficient photocatalytic reactions.Herein,the ultrasmall Ru nanoclusters(~0.9 nm)were successfully fabricated over P25 support with positive charged Ru^(δ+)species at the interface.A new route was developed to achieve the furfural(FAL)to furfurylamine(FAM)by coupling the light-driven reductive amination and hydrogen transfer of ethanol over this type catalyst.Strikingly,the photocatalytic activity and selectivity are strongly dependent on the particle size and electronic structure of Ruthenium.The Ru^(δ+)species at the interface promote the formation of active imine intermediates;moreover,the Ru nanoclusters facilitate the separation efficiency of electrons and holes as well as accelerate the further hydrogenation of imine intermediates to product primary amines.In contrast Ru particles in larger nanometer size facilitate the formation of the furfuryl alcohol and excessive hydrogenation products.In addition,the coupling byproducts can be effectively inhibited via the construction of sub-nanocluster.This study offers a new path to produce the primary amines from biomass-derived carbonyl compounds over hybrid semiconductor/metal-clusters photocatalyst via light-driven tandem catalytic process.展开更多
Oxalidaceae is one of the most important plant families in horticulture,and its key commercially relevant genus,Averrhoa,has diverse growth habits and fruit types.Here,we describe the assembly of a high-quality chromo...Oxalidaceae is one of the most important plant families in horticulture,and its key commercially relevant genus,Averrhoa,has diverse growth habits and fruit types.Here,we describe the assembly of a high-quality chromosomescale genome sequence for Averrhoa carambola(star fruit).Ks distribution analysis showed that A.carambola underwent a whole-genome triplication event,i.e.,the gamma event shared by most eudicots.Comparisons between A.carambola and other angiosperms also permitted the generation of Oxalidaceae gene annotations.We identified unique gene families and analyzed gene family expansion and contraction.This analysis revealed significant changes in MADS-box gene family content,which might be related to the cauliflory of A.carambola.In addition,we identified and analyzed a total of 204 nucleotide-binding site,leucine-rich repeat receptor(NLR)genes and 58 WRKY genes in the genome,which may be related to the defense response.Our results provide insights into the origin,evolution and diversification of star fruit.展开更多

The wood sorrel family,Oxalidaceae,is mainly composed of annual or perennial herbs,a few shrubs,and trees distributed from temperate to tropical zones.Members of Oxalidaceae are of high medicinal,ornamental,and econom...The wood sorrel family,Oxalidaceae,is mainly composed of annual or perennial herbs,a few shrubs,and trees distributed from temperate to tropical zones.Members of Oxalidaceae are of high medicinal,ornamental,and economic value.Despite the rich diversity and value of Oxalidaceae,few molecular markers or plastomes are available for phylogenetic analysis of the family.Here,we reported four new whole plastomes of Oxalidaceae and compared them with plastomes of three species in the family,as well as the plastome of Rourea microphylla in the closely related family Connaraceae.The eight plastomes ranged in length from 150,673 bp(Biophytum sensitivum)to 156,609 bp(R.microphylla).Genome annotations revealed a total of 129e131 genes,including 83e84 protein-coding genes,eight rRNA genes,37 tRNA genes,and two to three pseudogenes.Comparative analyses showed that the plastomes of these species have minor variations at the gene level.The smaller plastomes of herbs B.sensitivum and three Oxalis species are associated with variations in IR region sizes,intergenic region variation,and gene or intron loss.We identified sequences with high variation that may serve as molecular markers in taxonomic studies of Oxalidaceae.The phylogenetic trees of selected superrosid representatives based on 76 protein-coding genes corroborated the Oxalidaceae position in Oxalidales and supported it as a sister to Connaraceae.Our research also supported the monophyly of the COM(Celastrales,Oxalidales,and Malpighiales)clade.展开更多
Thermal decomposition of inorganic metal carbonates is the main path to prepare metal oxides;nonetheless,it is always accompanied by the emission of large amounts of CO_(2) as one of the gas products.This study report...Thermal decomposition of inorganic metal carbonates is the main path to prepare metal oxides;nonetheless,it is always accompanied by the emission of large amounts of CO_(2) as one of the gas products.This study reports a concept of co-thermal insitu reduction of inorganic carbonates by using the energy released by carbonate decomposition under pure hydrogen atmosphere,which reduces the decarboxylation temperature and significantly inhibits the CO_(2) emissions.A combination of hydrogen–deuterium exchange,isotope experiment,and density functional theory calculations demonstrates that the CO results from the selective cleavage of Ca–O bonds at the surface of CaCO_(3) via the direct hydrogenation mechanism at relatively low temperature.However,it undergoes the reverse water–gas shift reaction path at high temperature,i.e.,CO being produced by the reduction of CO_(2) released by the decomposition of carbonates.This study sheds light on the potential of green hydrogen technology for inorganic carbonate valorization toward high value-added products,which can facilitate the large-scale industrial applications.展开更多
Signal transducers and activators of transcription 5(Stat5)is known to engage in regulating the differentiation and effector function of various subsets of T helper cells.However,how Stat5 regulates the antitumor acti...Signal transducers and activators of transcription 5(Stat5)is known to engage in regulating the differentiation and effector function of various subsets of T helper cells.However,how Stat5 regulates the antitumor activity of tumor-infiltrating CD4^(+)T cells is largely unknown.Here,we showed that mice with specific deletion of Stat5 in CD4^(+)T cells were less susceptible to developing subcutaneous and lung metastatic B16 melanoma with CD4^(+)tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes(TILs)remolding.Especially,we confirmed that Stat5-deficient CD4^(+)naïve T cells were prone to polarization of two subtypes of Th17 cells:IFN-γ^(+)and IFN-γ^(-)Th17 cells,which exhibited increased anti-melanoma activity through enhanced activation of Notch1 pathway compared with wild type Th17 cells.Our study therefore revealed a novel function of Stat5 in regulating tumor-specific Th17 cell differentiation and function in melanoma.This study also provided a new possibility for targeting Stat5 and other Th17-associated pathways to develop novel immunotherapies for melanoma patients.展开更多
Background:The mechanism of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy remains poorly understood.Seizure induced cardiac arrhythmia,central and obstructive apneas have been proposed as possible causes of death.Here we report...Background:The mechanism of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy remains poorly understood.Seizure induced cardiac arrhythmia,central and obstructive apneas have been proposed as possible causes of death.Here we report a unique case of seizure related sudden unexpected death in a patient whose airway was fully protected by intubation and mechanic ventilation in the absence of fatal cardiac arrhythmia.Case presentation:A 70-year-old woman was undergoing mechanical ventilation and videoelectroencephalography(EEG)monitoring following two convulsive seizures with ictal hypoventilation and hypoxemia.Several hours after intubation,she suffered another generalized tonic clonic seizure lasted for 3 min and developed postictal generalized EEG suppression in the presence of stable vital signs with SpO2>90%.EEG suppression persisted throughout the postictal phase.There was a significant fluctuation of systolic blood pressure between 50 and 180 mmHg with several bouts of hypotension<60 mmHg.She remained unresponsive after the convulsive seizure and died of diffuse cerebral edema 12 h later.Autopsy revealed no clear cause of death,except for possible hypoxic and ischemic injury leading to the diffuse cerebral edema.Conclusion:Given the reliable periictal airway protection,neither seizure induced central apnea nor obstructive apnea appeared to be the direct cause of death in this unique case.In the absence of fatal cardiac arrhythmia,diffuse cerebral edema secondary to seizure-induced autonomic dysfunction,hypotension and hypoxemia might be the cause of death,highlighting the etiological heterogeneity of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy.展开更多
