The extrudate was drawn at a drawing ratio of 3.1, and then quickly cooled in cold water. The specimens were obtained by injection molding at processing temperatures less than 190℃, far below the melting temperature of PET (265℃) and PA (230℃), which can maintain the solid state of PET and PA microfiber phase in the composites. Morphological observation with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated that PET and PA can more or less form in-situ microfibers at compositions studied (0~20 wt pct PET or PA), and especially, PET and PA were almost deformed into fibers at the concentration of 15 wt pct. Tensile strength and modulus of the blends reinforced by PET or PA microfibers showed to be increased from the tensile test results. The most noticeable improvement of the tensile properties occurred at 15 wt pct of PET in PET/PE system, corresponding to the highest microfiber content, where the tensile strength reached 32.5 MPa, whereas only 19.5 MPa for the pure PE.展开更多

But due to the three-dimensional nature of these kinds of composites, coupled with the shortcomings of currently-adopted experimental test methods, it is difficult to measure the internal parameters of this materials, hence causes it difficult to understand the material performance. A new method is introduced herein to measure the internal strain of braided composite materials using co-braided fiber optic sensors. Two kinds of fiber optic sensors are co-braided into 3D braided composites to measure internal strain. One of these is the Fabry-Parrot (F-P) fiber optic sensor; the other is the polarimetric fiber optic sensor. Experiments are conducted to measure internal strain under tension, bending and thermal environments in the 3D carbon fiber braided composite specimens, both locally and globally. Experimental results show that multiple fiber optic sensors can be braided into the 3D braided composites to measure the internal parameters, providing a more accurate measurement method and leading to a better understanding of these materials.展开更多

It was found that MA-POE, as an impact modifier, had a profound effect upon the toughness of the PA-6/nano-CaCO3 composite. In particular, by adopting two-stage blending route, the microstructure of the ternary composites turned to core-shell structure, and the impact toughness was improved greatly. At the same time, tensile strength and dynamic storage modulus (E1) were higher than those with one-stage blending route processed ternary composite. The results suggest that blending routes may improve the properties of PA-6/nano-CaCO3/MA-POE ternary composites.展开更多
