Recent trends in food industry focus on utilization of fruit processing waste and by-products as novel ingredients due to their nutritional benefits.Apple seed is one such novel ingredient that can find application as functional ingredient in food, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industry. The existing studies suggest that apple seed is a rich source of amino acids, fatty acids and polyphenolic compounds. This review discusses the nutritional and phytochemical profile as well as biological activities exhibited by the apple seed.It also highlights the current application of apple seed in food, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries along with the safety aspects considering the presence of amygdalin. The apple seed meal, extracts or seed oil as novel ingredient can find various industrial applications given their dense nutritional profile.Besides their functionality, rigorous and extensive research is required to promote its usage at industrial level for harnessing the benefits of apple seeds. 展开更多

Jamun(Syzygium cumini Skeels)is a nutritious fruit and has historically been used as both as an edible and a traditional medicine. The jamun seed is an inedible by-product of the fruit. However, their high concentration of phytochemicals makes them valuable components of nutraceuticals.Various studies on diverse biological activities of jamun seeds have warranted their application in human health and biomedical fields. This review paper discusses critically the phytochemical composition of jamun seeds and the bioactivities, including their antioxidant,anti-inflammatory,anti-cancer,antidiabetic,anti-microbial,anti-obesity,hepato-protective,cardio and gastro-protective properties. The bioactivity of jamun seed is related to the presence of phenols, flavonoids, steroids, alkaloids, triterpenoids, tannins, and saponins.Animal research in vivo, and in vitro experiments with human and animal cell models support the idea that jamun seed extract can be valuable additions in food and biomedical fields due to the diverse bio-functional properties.However,in-depth and systematic in vivo clinical trials using human subjects must be conducted to confirm the safe consumption limit and establish other therapeutic roles of jamun seeds for their abundant utilization as a nutraceutical or pharmacological component. Moreover, research is required to understand the exact mechanisms of the bioactivities exhibited by jamun seeds. 展开更多

Prunus persica(L.)Batsch(or peach)(Rosaceae)is the most important stone fruit crop in many areas, including North Africa,South Africa, and Europe.Peaches are well known for their flavor, nutritional value, and potential health benefits.During the consumption of peach fruit, usually jams, jellies, juices, and other food products, the seed and kernel(stone)is disposed of as waste. However, the seeds and kernels of peach fruit are considered remarkably rich sources of sodium, potassium, zinc, copper, iron, fatty acids(linolenic, oleic, palmitic, and linoleic acids),fiber, and carbohydrate(sucrose, glucose, and fructose)content. The preliminary results of various studies demonstrated that seed and kernels of peach fruit contain high amount of protein and bioactive peptides.Seed and kernels extract showed anti-ageing,anti-biofilm properties, protection against oxidative stress, cancer cell proliferation, inhibit type II diabetes,Alzheimer’s disease and obesity. It was concluded that biological properties are stimulated by the presence of hydroxycinnamic acids, polymeric procyanidins, cyanogenic glycosides, carotenoids and other metabolites.Oil extracted from the seeds of peach extracted via, supercritical CO_(2) shows the presence of phytosterols(stigmasterol,β-sitosterol,campesterol)that were widely known for their cholesterol-lowering effects, while additional research showed peach kernels as a potent source of phenolic compounds with high concentration of phenolic acids and catechin.Amygdalin is present in the seed extract of peach fruit, that changes into cyanide and supposed to kill cancer cells.A variety of studies are being conducted to recover possible bioactive compounds from peach seed and/or kernels in order to prevent environmental pollution and also economic losses. Thus, peach wastes,by-products,and their valorized compounds can be used as a sustainable resource of various important compounds that can be of great importance in different functional foods, pharmaceuticals, animal feed industry and cosmetics. 展开更多
