Panax ginseng protects against copper sulfate-induced kidney toxicity in rats

Objective:To assess the protective effects of Panax ginseng(PG)against copper sulfate(CuSO_(4))-induced kidney toxicity in rats.Methods:The rats were randomly allocated into four groups:control,CuSO_(4),PG,and PG+CuSO_(4).The experiment continued for 14 days,during which CuSO_(4) was provided at a dosage of 100 mg/kg body weight per day and PG at 300 mg/kg body weight by oral gavage per day.Upon completion of the experiment,kidney sections were used for histological and histomorphometric analyses.The histochemical method was applied to ascertain the density of the glomerular mesangial matrix.The expressions of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)and caspase-3 were examined using immunohistochemistry.The levels of malondialdehyde and glutathione,along with the activity of superoxide dismutase and catalase in the kidney,were measured.Results:PG treatment exhibited a marked protective effect against CuSO_(4)-induced renal damage,as evidenced by improved histopathological lesions,significantly reduced glomerular mesangial matrix density,VEGF in distal tubules,caspase-3 expression,and malondialdehyde levels in renal tissue,as well as enhanced superoxide dismutase and catalase activities.Conclusions:PG treatment ameliorates CuSO_(4)-induced kidney injury in rats.Further studies are warranted to verify its efficacy and elucidate the underlying mechanism of its nephroprotective action. 展开更多

AIM: To investigate the effects of gallbladder stones on motor functions of the gallbladder and the dynamics of bile flow in asymptomatic gallstone disease. METHODS: Quantitative hepatobiliary scintigraphy was performed to detect the parameters of gallbladder motor function [gallbladder ejection fraction (GBEF), gallbladder visualization time (GBVT), gallbladder time to peak activity (GBTmax), gallbladder half emptying time (GBT1/2), and transit time of bile to duodenum (TTBD)] in 24 patients with asymptomatic cholelithiasis who were diagnosed incidentally during routine abdominal ultrasonographic examination and 20 healthy subjects with normal gallbladder. RESULTS: Even though there was no significant difference in the clinical and laboratory parameters between the patient and control groups, all parameters of gallbladder function except TTBD were found to differ significantly between the two groups. GBEF in the patient group was decreased (P = 0.000) and GBVT, GBT GBT1/2 in the patient group were longer (P = 0.000, P = 0.015, P = 0.001, respectively).there were not any clinical and laboratory findings, gallbladder filling and emptying could be impaired in patients with gallstone disease. 展开更多

We report a case of right lower abdominal wall and groin abscess resulting from acute appendicitis. The patient was an 27-year-old man who had no apparent abdominal signs and was brought to the hospital due to progressive painful swelling of right lower abdomen and the groin for 10 d. Significant inflammatory changes of soft tissue involving the right lower trunk were noted without any apparent signs of peritonitis. Laboratory results revealed leukocytosis. Abdominal ultrasonography described the presence of abscess at right inguinal site also communicating with the intraabdominal region. Right inguinal exploration and laparotomy were performed and about 250 mL of pus was drained from the subcutaneous tissue and preperitoneal space. No collection of pus was found intraabdominally and subserous acute appendicitis was the cause of the abscess. The patient fully recovered at the end of the second post-operation week. This case reminds us that acute appendicitis may have an atypical clinical presentation and should be treated carefully on an emergency basis to avoid serious complications. 展开更多

Campanula species have long been valued for their traditional medicinal and nutritional uses;however,the phytochemical composition and biological potential of the endemic taxon Campanula cymbalaria var.papillosa remain unexplored.In this study,the phenolic profiles and tissue-specific bioactivities of methanolic leaf and flower extracts were investigated using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry(LC-MS/MS),in vitro bioassays,and molecular docking.LC-MS/MS analysis identified 17 phenolic compounds in leaf extracts and 22 in flower extracts,with quinic acid as the predominant metabolite in both tissues,occurring at higher levels in flowers(54.4 mg/g)than leaves(38.3 mg/g).Leaves were enriched in cynaroside(19.6 mg/g)and exhibited higher total phenolic(54.39 mg GAE/g)and flavonoid contents(58.88 mg QE/g)compared to flowers.Consistently,leaf extracts showed stronger antioxidant capacity,including ABTS·+(74.39 mg TE/g),DPPH•(69.39 mg TE/g),and CUPRAC(128.73 mg TE/g).The highest antibacterial activity was observed for the flower extract against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923(MIC:512μg/mL).Cytotoxicity assays revealed pronounced time-and cell line-dependent antiproliferative effects,with the flower extract showing vigorous activity against SKBR3 cells(IC50=0.11 mg/mL at 48 h).Both extracts exhibited moderate and comparable inhibition of acetylcholinesterase,butyrylcholinesterase,α-amylase,and α-glucosidase,whereas flower extracts showed significantly stronger tyrosinase inhibition.Docking analysis indicated that abundant phenolics,particularly cynaroside,isoquercitrin,and chlorogenic acid,displayed strong binding affinities toward the investigated enzymes.Overall,these findings highlight C.cymbalaria var.papillosa as a tissue-dependent source of multifunctional bioactive compounds with potential food and pharmaceutical relevance. 展开更多

Firat-93 (salt-tolerant) were grown in control and salt (150 mmol/L NaCl) treat... In this research, 3-day-old etiolated wheat seedlings of Triticum aestivum L. cv. Ceyhan-99 (salt-sensitive) and T. durum Desf. cv. Firat-93 (salt-tolerant) were grown in control and salt (150 mmol/L NaCl) treatments at a 15/25℃ temperature regime in the light for 12 days. Soluble proteins extracted from the first leaf tissues of two cultivars were analyzed by twodimensional (2-D) electrophoresis in order to detect NaCl-induced changes. The soluble leaf protein profiles of cultivars were observed to be similar. However, quantitative differences in 74 proteins were detected in the salt treatment group, compared to the control. Among the 74 protein spots, 14 were common for two cultivars. As a result of NaCl treatment, two low-molecular-weight (LMW) proteins (28.9 and 30.0 kDa) and one intermediate-molecular-weight (IMW) protein (44.3 kDa) in cv. Ceyhan-99 and six LMW proteins (18.6, 19.4, 25.7, 25.9, 26 and 27.6 kDa) in cv. Firat-93 were newly synthesized. The newly synthesized proteins were specific to each cultivar. In the Firat-93 cultivar, four proteins with LMW (24.8-27.9 kDa) were completely lost in NaCl treatment. Moreover, these four protein spots were not observed in both protein profiles of cv. Ceyhan-99. Most of these proteins were in acidic character (pl 〈6.0-6.9) and low molecular weight (〈31.6 kDa). It is suggested that the newly synthesized or completely lost LMW proteins may be important for cultivars differing in sensitivity towards NaCl. 展开更多
