When kidney function declines to a point where it can no longer maintain life and requires renal replacement therapy(i.e.renal transplant or dialysis),it is called end-stage renal disease(ESRD).Patients with ESRD ofte...When kidney function declines to a point where it can no longer maintain life and requires renal replacement therapy(i.e.renal transplant or dialysis),it is called end-stage renal disease(ESRD).Patients with ESRD often experience a range of gastrointestinal(GI)symptoms,with prevalence rates reported as high as 77%-79%.These symptoms and pathologies arise from various factors,including electrolyte imbalance,fluid imbalance,toxin buildup,uremia,medications,dietary and lifestyle restrictions,and the effects of dialysis.GI diseases in patients with renal failure can be further categorized into upper GI,small bowel,and lower GI issues.Common conditions include gastroesophageal reflux disease,nausea and vomiting,dysmotility within the esophagus and stomach,upper GI bleeding,peptic ulcer bleeding,angioectasia,irritable bowel syndrome,mesen-teric ischemia,angiodysplasia,diverticular disease,constipation,pancreatitis,and diseases associated with peritoneal dialysis peritonitis and peritoneal stenosis.This review assesses the existing literature on the different GI diseases among individuals with ESRD,shedding light on their pathophysiology and prevalence.展开更多
Lattice-strain engineering has demonstrated its capability to influence the electronic structure and catalytic performance of electrocatalysts.Herein,we present a facile method for inducing thermal strain in cobalt/mo...Lattice-strain engineering has demonstrated its capability to influence the electronic structure and catalytic performance of electrocatalysts.Herein,we present a facile method for inducing thermal strain in cobalt/molybdenum nitride rod-shaped structures(denoted Co/Mo_(2)N)via ammonia-assisted reduction,which effectively modulating the HER performance.The optimized Co/Mo_(2)N-500,characterized by 3%tensile lattice strain,demonstrates exceptional HER activity with lower overpotentials of140 mV and 184 mV at high current density of 1000 mA cm^(-2)in alkaline freshwater and seawater electrolytes,respectively.Co/Mo_(2)N also exhibits excellent long-term durability even at a high current density of 300 mA cm^(-2),surpassing its counterparts and benchmark Pt/C catalyst.Density functional theory calculations validate that the tensile strain optimizes the d-band states,water dissociation,and hydrogen adsorption kinetics of the strained Mo_(2)N in Co/Mo_(2)N,thereby improving its catalytic efficacy.This work provides valuable insights into controlling lattice strain to develop highly efficient electrocatalysts towards advanced electrocatalytic applications.展开更多

However, it's still suffered by low safety issue of liquid electrolyte. Herein, a composite cathode consisting of CNTs and polymer electrolytes was fabricated by the insitu polymerization process for the polymer electrolyte-based solid-state Li-CO2 batteries. With the good dispersion of CNTs and polymer electrolyte, the composite cathode is covered by film-like discharge products Li2CO3.Furthermore, the Li-CO2 battery shows high reversible capacity (- 11,000 mAh·g^-1), excellent cycle stability (1000 mAb·g^-1 for 100 cycles) under low charge potential (〈 4.5 V), and outstanding rate performances at room temperature, which are much better than those of liquid electrolyte-based battery. Therefore, the polymer electrolyte-based Li-CO2 battery prepared by this strategy can be a promising candidate to meet the demands of high safety and high-performance energy storage devices.展开更多

Knowledge of what pest species are eating is important to determine their impact on stored food products and to plan management strategies accordingly.In this study,we investigated the food habits of 2 rodents,Rattus ...Knowledge of what pest species are eating is important to determine their impact on stored food products and to plan management strategies accordingly.In this study,we investigated the food habits of 2 rodents,Rattus rattus(ship rat)and Mus musculus castaneus(house mouse)as well as an insectivore,Suncus murinus(shrew),present in human dwellings.Both a microhistological approach and a DNA barcoding approach were used in the present study.Following DNA extraction,amplification was performed using group-specific primers targeting birds,plants and invertebrates.Resulting polymerase chain reaction products were sequenced and analyzed to identify the different prey species present in the gut contents.The findings from the application of both techniques were in agreement,but the detection of prey type with each technique was different.The DNA barcoding approach gave greater species-level identification when compared to the microhistological method,especially for the invertebrate and avian prey.Overall,with both techniques,23 prey taxa were identified in the gut contents of the 3 species,including 15 plants,7 insects and a single bird species.We conclude that with a selection of suitable“barcode genes”and optimization of polymerase chain reaction protocols,DNA barcoding can provide more accurate and faster results.Prey detection from either technique alone can bias the dietary information.Hence,combining prey information of both microhistological analysis and DNA barcoding is recommended to study pest diet,especially if the pest is an omnivore or insectivore species.展开更多
This research study evaluated the effect of different additives on the bait consumption by Indian crested porcupine,a serious forest and agricultural pest,under field conditions.Different additives(saccharin,common sa...This research study evaluated the effect of different additives on the bait consumption by Indian crested porcupine,a serious forest and agricultural pest,under field conditions.Different additives(saccharin,common salt,bone meal,fish meal,peanut butter,egg yolk,egg shell powder,yeast powder,mineral oil and coconut oil)at 2 and 5%each were tested for their relative preference,using groundnut-maize(1:1)as basic bait.All the additives were tested under a no-choice test pattern.For control tests,no additive was mixed with the basic bait.Saccharin at 5%concentration significantly enhanced the consumption of bait over the basic bait,while 2%saccharin supplemented bait resulted in a non-significant bait consumption.All other additives did not enhance the consumption of the bait material;rather,these worked as repellents.However,the repellency was lowest with the common salt,followed by egg yolk,egg shell powder,bone meal,peanut butter,mineral oil,fish meal and yeast powder,while coconut remained the most repellent compound.The present study suggested that groundnut-maize(1:1)supplemented with 5%saccharin was the preferred bait combination,and can be used with different rodenticides for the management of Indian crested porcupine.展开更多
