Contamination and Ecological Risk Assessment of Heavy Metal in the Sediment of Turag River, Bangladesh: An Index Analysis Approach 被引量:5

Encroachment, disposal of untreated domestic and industrial wastewater and dumping of solid wastes have degraded the overall quality of the river Turag, which is located in Dhaka—the Capital City of Bangladesh. The present study investigated the extent of pollution of sediments of this river and analyzed the regional variability for the concentrations of Cr, Pb, Zn, Cu and Cd—all of concern because of their potential toxicity, using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. As per US EPA sediment quality guideline, metal concentrations ranged between Cd: 0.00 - 0.80, Cr: 32.00 - 75.50, Cu: 46.30 - 60.00, Pb: 28.30 - 36.40, and Zn: 94.60 - 190.10 mg/kg in the Turag river sediments. Cr, Cu, Zn belongs to moderately to highly polluted, Pb and Cd belongs to not polluted for Turag river. The heavy metals contamination in the sediments were also evaluated by applying Index of geo-accumulation (Igeo), contamination factor (Cf), pollution load index (PLI) etc. Toxicity characteristics leaching procedure (TCLP) test (US EPA 1311) for sediment samples have been performed also for metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu and Zn) to determine the readily toxicity level of heavy metals. Sieve analysis of sediment performed in this study to determine the physical characteristic of sediment samples. The metal concentrations are well below the regulated level as per US EPA. This index can be complemented with the contamination index, which allows more site-specific and accurate information on contaminant levels. If the aim of work on contamination evaluation is to assess the overall contamination of a study area, the indices are highly appropriate. 展开更多

Effect of Packing Materials and Other Parameters on the Air Stripping Process for the Removal of Ammonia from the Wastewater of Natural Gas Fertilizer Factory 被引量:2

Different materials were used as packing materials for the air stripping system. The effect of pH over 10.5, air-water flow ratio, nature of packing materials, height of materials and initial influent concentration of ammonia on air stripping unit were investigated. An attempt has been made to find out the stripping con-stant. Stripping constant was found to be .001, 0014, .001 and .0009 for coal, plastic ring, stone chips and wood chips, respectively. Best result was found for plastic ring for its higher surface area. Wood chips did not give good result, because the chips amalgamate with each other and hence reduces the surface area. 展开更多

In this study the existing process (3 steps) and proposed process (2 steps) were evaluated during dyeing of denim fabric with fluorescent dye. It compared the effectiveness of these two processes of fluorescent dyeing in the textile industry. Here at first the grey denim fabric was pretreated by scouring and bleaching. Then the fabric was dyed in existing process i.e. through catanizing, dyeing and binding at 10% and 15% shades. Again the pretreated fabric was dyed in proposed process i.e. through catanizing and (dyeing and binding) with same shades. Then the properties of two types of dyed fabric were compared. This study provides a set of experimental results, discussion and comparison between the two processes. The results show that the proposed process has less power and time consumption and more water savings compared to existing process. So the evaluation reflected that the proposed process was much more effective than existing process of denim dyeing with fluorescent dye. 展开更多
