The main purpose of this study is to investigate the hydrocarbon charging histories of reservoirs by applying K-Ar dating of authigenic illites. The ages of authigenic illites from the Lower Silurian bituminous sandstones in the Central Uplift area range from 383.5 to 235.2 Ma, suggesting that the Silurian oil accumulations were formed from the late Caledonian till the late Hercynian. The ages of authigenic illites from the Upper Devonian Donghe Sandstone reservoirs range from 263.8 to 231.3 Ma, indicating that hydrocarbon accumulations within the Donghe sandstone were formed mainly in the late Hercynian. The authigenic illites ages from the Lower Jurassic Yangxia Group sandstones in the Yinan-2 gas reservoir (Yinan-2, Kuqa Depression) range from 28.1 to 23.9 Ma, suggesting that the initial hydrocarbon charging occurred in the Miocene. The ages of the authigenic illites from the Lower Cretaceous sandstones in the Akemomu gas field (Ake-1, Kashi Sag, Southwest Depression) range from 22.6 to 18.8 Ma, indicating a probable early oil accumulation or early migration of hydrocarbon within this area. The illites from the Paleogene sandstones in the Dina-2 gas reservoir (Dina-201, Kuqa Depression) have a detrital origin; they cannot be used to study the hydrocarbon charging histories. The ages of authigenic illites in the underlying Cretaceous sandstones in the same well (Dina-201) range from 25.5 to 15.5 Ma, indicating that hydrocarbon charging in this reservoir probably occurred within the Miocene. This study highlights the potential of applying K-Ar dating of authigenic illites to investigate the timing of hydrocarbon charging histories of the Tarim Basin reservoir sandstones.展开更多

The three sequences have different wireline (SP) log responses, showing triple-section characteristics with SQ1 being characterized by primarily flat baseline with intercalation of relatively low spontaneous potential, SQ2 generally exhibiting weak or moderate amplitude spontaneous potential with finger-shaped peaks, and SQ3 having relatively high spontaneous potential with funnel-shaped log curves. On the basis of the triple-section characteristics, the stratigraphic sequences can be correlated consistently throughout the entire study area. A stratigraphic and sedimentary model for sequences SQ1 to SQ3 of the Dongying Formation in the study area has been proposed. The accommodation space change in the two sides of the asymmetrical basin was examined and the asymmetrical basin has the feature of the asymmetrical accommodation space change. The asymmetrical physiography is a vital factor to influence the accommodation changes in additional to the lake level change, tectonism and sediment supply. This may have important implications to similar basins in other parts of China or elsewhere.展开更多

A variogram and a Levy-stable probability distribution-based geostatistical method have been applied to analyze petrophysical properties from well logs and cores from a variety of depositional environments in sedimentary basins from Australia to quantify the heterogeneity and upscaling range of different depositional systems. Two reservoir sequences with contrasting sedimentary facies, depositional processes and a diagenetic history are investigated for their petrographic, petrophysical and log characters and their scaling behaviour. The microscopic derived petrophysical parameters, including visual porosity, grain size, sorting and amount of matrix, core plug measured porosity and permeability and log-derived V-shale, porosity and permeability, have been found to be well correlated (|R|=0.72 to 0.91) across all the scales for the reservoir sequence deposited under a single predominant depositional process and a gradational change of the energy regime (Bilyara-1). In contrast, for the reservoir sequence (East Swan-2), which was deposited in heterogeneous processes and underwent diagenetic alteration, the cross-correlation of the petrophysical properties derived from the three different scales is extremely poor (|R|=0.01-0.54). Log-derived porosity and permeability for a thinly bedded reservoir sequence with an individual bed thinner than one metre can therefore be affected by the intrinsic averaging effects of the logging tools.展开更多
