Friction stir processing(FSP)is a novel solid state technique to synthesize metal matrix composites. In the present work,an attempt has been made to synthesize AZ31/TiC magnesium matrix composites using FSP and to analyze the microstructure using scanning electron microscopy.A groove was prepared on 6 mm thick AZ31 magnesium alloy plates and compacted with TiC particles. The width of the groove was varied to result in four different volume fraction of TiC particles(0,6,12 and 18 vol.%).A single pass FSP was carried out using a tool rotational speed of 1200 rpm, traverse speed of 40 mm/min and an axial force of 10 kN.Scanning electron microscopy was employed to study the microstructure of the synthesized composites. The results indicated that TiC particles were distributed uniformly in the magnesium matrix without the formation of clusters. There was no interfacial reaction between the magnesium matrix and the TiC particle.TiC particles were properly bonded to the magnesium matrix. 展开更多

Aluminum alloys AA6061 reinforced with various amounts (0, 2.5% and 5%, mass fraction) of TiC particles were synthesized by the in situ reaction of inorganic salt K2TiF6 and ceramic particle SiC with molten aluminum. The casting was carried out at an elevated temperature and held for a longer duration to decompose SiC to release carbon atoms. X-ray diffraction patterns of the prepared AMCs clearly revealed the formation of TiC particles without the occurrence of any other intermetallic compounds. The microstructure of the prepared AA6061/TiC AMCs was studied using field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The in situ formed TiC particles were characterized with homogeneous distribution, clear interface, good bonding and various shapes such as cubic, spherical and hexagonal. EBSD maps showed the grain refinement action of TiC particles on the produced composites. The formation of TiC particles boosted the microhardness and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of the AMCs. 展开更多

The dry sliding wear behavior of AA6061/ZrB2 in-situ composite prepared by the reaction of inorganic salts K2ZrF6 and KBF4 with molten aluminum was investigated. An attempt was made to develop a mathematical model to predict the wear rate of AA6061/(0-10%) ZrB2 in-situ composites.Four-factor,five-level central composite rotatable design was used to minimize the number of experiments. The factors considered are sliding velocity, sliding distance, normal load and mass fraction of ZrB2 particles. The effect of these factors on the wear rate of the fabricated composite was analyzed and the predicted trends were discussed by observing the wear surface morphologies. The in-situ formed ZrB2 particles enhance the wear performance of the composite. The wear rate of the composite bears a proportional relationship with the sliding velocity, sliding distance and normal load. 展开更多

Utilizing fly ash(FA)as reinforcement for magnesium matrix composites(MMCs)brings down the production cost and the land pollution.Magnesium alloy AZ31 was reinforced with FA particles(10 vol.%)successfully by two different processing methods namely conventional stir casting and friction stir processing(FSP).The microstructural features were observed using optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and electron backscatter diffraction. The sliding wear behavior was tested using a pin-on-disc wear apparatus. The stir cast composite showed inhomogeneous particle dispersion and coarse grain structure. Some of the FA particles decomposed and reacted with the matrix alloy to produce undesirable compounds.Conversely,FSP composite showed superior particle dispersion and fine, equiaxed grains by dynamic recrystallization.FA particles encountered disintegration but there was no interfacial reaction.FSP composite demonstrated higher strengthening and wear resistance to that of stir cast composite. The morphology of the worn surface and the wear debris were studied in detail. 展开更多

Stir casting was used to produce AA6061/15%TiC (mass fraction) aluminum matrix composites (AMCs). An empirical relationship was developed to predict the effect of stir casting parameters on the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of AA6061/TiC AMCs. A central composite rotatable design consisting of four factors and five levels was used to minimize the number of experiments, i.e., castings. The factors considered were stirring speed, stirring time, blade angle and casting temperature. The effect of those factors on the UTS of AA6061/TiC AMCs was derived using the developed empirical relationship and elucidated using microstructural characterization. Each factor significantly influenced the UTS. The variation in the UTS was attributed to porosity content, cluster formation, segregation of TiC particles at the grain boundaries and homogenous distribution in the aluminum matrix. 展开更多

The influence of overlap multi-pass friction stir processing on the microstructure and the mechanical properties, in particular, strength, ductility and hardness of die cast A1-7Si-3Cu aluminum alloy was investigated. It was observed that increase in the number of overlap passes friction stir processing resulted in significant refinement and redistribution of aluminum silicon eutectic phase and elimination of casting porosities. The microstructural refinement by the friction stir processing not only increases the ultimate tensile strength from 121 to 273 MPa, but also increases the ductility as observed by the increase in fracture strain from 1.8% to 10%. Analysis of the fractured surface reveals that the microstructural refinement obtained by friction stir processing plays a vital role in transforming the fracture mode from completely mixed mode to the ductile mode of the fracture with increasing number of passes. The change in the size, shape, morphology and distribution of eutectic silicon particles and elimination of the porosities are the main reasons for the increases in tensile strength and ductility due to friction stir processing. 展开更多

The microstructure and mechanical characterization of dissimilar friction stir welded AA5083-H111 and AA6351-T6 aluminum alloys were studied. Three different welding speeds (36, 63 and 90 mm/min) were used to weld the dissimilar alloys. The effect of welding speed on mechanical and metallurgical properties was analyzed. It is found that the welding speed of 63 mm/min produces better mechanical and metallurgical properties than other welding speeds. The weld zone is composed of three kinds of microstructures, namely unmixed region, mechanically mixed region and mixed flow region. The fracture mode was observed to be a ductile fibrous fracture. 展开更多

The ... An attempt was made to synthesize Cu/B4C surface composite using friction stir processing(FSP) and to analyze the influence of tool rotational speed on microstructure and sliding wear behavior of the composite. The tool rotational speed was varied from 800 to 1200 r/min in step of 200 r/min. The traverse speed, axial force, groove width and tool pin profile were kept constant. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the microstructure of the fabricated surface composites. The sliding wear behavior was evaluated using a pin-on-disc apparatus. The results indicate that the tool rotational speed significantly influences the area of the surface composite and the distribution of B4C particles. Higher rotational speed exhibits homogenous distribution of B4C particles, while lower rotational speed causes poor distribution of B4C particles in the surface composite. The effects of tool rotational speed on the grain size, microhardness, wear rate, worn surface and wear debris were reported. 展开更多

The dry sliding wear behavior of AA6061 matrix composite reinforced with aluminium nitride particles(AlN) produced by stir casting process was investigated. A regression model was developed to predict the wear rate of the prepared composite. A four-factor, five-level central composite rotatable design matrix was used to minimize the number of experimental runs. The factors considered in this study were sliding velocity, sliding distance, normal load and mass fraction of AlN reinforcement in the matrix. The developed regression model was validated by statistical software SYSTAT 12 and statistical tools such as analysis of variance(ANOVA) and student's t test. It was found that the developed regression model could be effectively used to predict the wear rate at 95% confidence level. The influence of these factors on wear rate of AA6061/AlNp composite was analyzed using the developed regression model and predicted trends were discussed with the aid of worn surface morphologies. The regression model indicated that the wear rate of cast AA6061/AlNp composite decreased with an increase in the mass fraction of AlN and increased with an increase of the sliding velocity, sliding distance and normal load acting on the composite specimen. 展开更多
