Quality education is one of the pillars in the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. This overall goal can be connected to some general trends affecting education in the information age.We argue that education is key to the future quality of human life and the sustainability of the world.Generally, education is being transformed in both formal and informal learning contexts by new digital technologies.Overall, some of these major innovations and how they are changing education can be summarized into the following aspects:1)our educational aims and objectives;2)educational ecologies and contexts of learning;3)the processes of learning;4)the processes of teaching;and 5)educational governance and policy.Meanwhile,we note some of the potential risks and downsides of these technology trends. From the sustainable perspective, our review points to a great potential for educational reform, but it can only be achieved if we are willing to rethink and even abandon some of our traditional ways of doing things in education. 展开更多

With the development of information and communication technologies, all public tertiary hospitals in China began to use online outpatient appointment systems. However, the phenomenon of patient no-shows in online outpatient appointments is becoming more serious. The objective of this study is to design a prediction model for patient no-shows,thereby assisting hospitals in making relevant decisions, and reducing the probability of patient no-show behavior. We used 382,004 original online outpatient appointment records, and divided the data set into a training set(N_(1)=286,503),and a validation set(N_(2)=95,501).We used machine learning algorithms such as logistic regression,k-nearest neighbor(KNN),boosting, decision tree(DT),random forest(RF)and bagging to design prediction models for patient no-show in online outpatient appointments. The patient no-show rate of online outpatient appointment was 11.1%(N=42,224).From the validation set, bagging had the highest area under the ROC curve and AUC value, which was 0.990,followed by random forest and boosting models, which were 0.987 and 0.976,respectively.In contrast, compared with the previous prediction models, the area under ROC and AUC values of the logistic regression, decision tree, and k-nearest neighbors were lower at 0.597,0.499 and 0.843,respectively.This study demonstrates the possibility of using data from multiple sources to predict patient no-shows.The prediction model results can provide decision basis for hospitals to reduce medical resource waste, develop effective outpatient appointment policies, and optimize operations. 展开更多

The occurrence of missed appointments from online outpatient bookings significantly hinders the operational efficiency of outpatient services. This study aimed to investigate various factors influencing patients’missed appointments from online outpatient bookings.Drawing on attribution theory,an empirical analysis was conducted using 382,004 authentic online outpatient appointments. The empirical findings revealed that appointment lead-time,appointment time, weekday appointments, online doctor rating, appointment doctor’s expertise, patient distance, and previous outpatient visit experience significantly influenced patients’missed appointment behaviors from online outpatient bookings.Importantly, previous outpatient experience positively moderated the relationship between the appointment doctor’s expertise and patients’missed-appointment behavior. This study provides insights into the factors influencing patients’missed-appointment behavior from online outpatient bookings. It further offers a theoretical foundation for medical institutions in China to mitigate the likelihood and adverse effects of patients’missed-appointment behavior from online outpatient bookings. 展开更多

Purpose:In response to contemporary global challenges in politics, economics, and technology, coupled with escalating uncertainties, there arises an imperative to reconstruct an innovative and dynamic education system centered around the advancement of human well-being and sustainable development.Design/Approach/Methods:Drawing upon empirical data from reputable international organizations, such as the United Nations,United Nations Educational,Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO),the World Bank, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development(OECD),this study analyzes the uncertainties confronting world development.Furthermore,it elucidates the challenges and opportunities embedded in educational reform, delving into the complexities of contemporary uncertainties.Findings:First, the enduring repercussions of the pandemic, including the persistent effects of"long COVID,"heightened geopolitical insecurities, repercussions of sluggish global economic growth, and challenges and opportunities posed by smart technology to economic and social development collectively contribute to an increasingly uncertain global landscape.Second, the inherent conservatism of the prevailing educational systems poses challenges in adapting to the evolving needs of social development. The uncertainty in economic and social development weakens societal support for educational reform, and a deteriorating labor market compels the reevaluation of the education system rooted in industrialism, facing transformative challenges from generative artificial intelligence. Finally, recognizing the urgent need for revolutionary changes in human education, this study advocates for the expeditious reshaping of a new humanistic education paradigm.OriginalityNalue:This study envisions a novel educational model capable of addressing the challenges posed by intelligent technology and emphasizes the creation of an open and dynamic education system by proposing a reconstruction of the education system oriented toward promoting human health and sustainable development. This study systematically examines the diverse uncertainties confronting human development, critically reflects on the inadequacies of the modern education system rooted in industrialism, and issues a cautionary call for the transition toward an intelligent education system. 展开更多

Purpose:This study analyzes the Programme for International Student Assessment(PISA)data, revealing that the test itself reflects China’s educational problems as well as the resultant effect of digital governance.Examining the root cause of these problems, this study demonstrates that the education reforms implemented in response to the PISA have gone beyond digital governance.Design/Approach/Methods:This study conducts a text analysis of materials related to China’s education system, including PISA data and analytical reports published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development since 2009.Findings:Reflected by PISA data, the main problems facing China’s educational sector include the overburdening of students at school, emphasis on knowledge acquisition during the teaching process, and the prevalence of extracurricular tuition. The digital governance effect triggered by PISA is highly consistent with China’s constant and excessive pursuit of efficiency, emphasis on scores, and the rate of students entering higher level schools. In the new era,China actively reflected on the disadvantages of digital governance before implementing a series of education reforms that go beyond it.Originality/Value:This study is based on China’s cultural background and the latest contexts. It examines the impact of the large-scale international assessment on China’s education governance and discusses the impact of digital governance on the education reforms in other countries. The implementation of China’s post-PISA education reforms demonstrates that different countries can implement rational education reforms based on their own cultural traditions and social realities as well as by referencing and using PISA data with care and prudence. 展开更多

Purpose:This study reviews China’s labor education theories and policies to reveal the main objectives, contents, and methods of the new era,as well as analyzes future development in labor education.Design/Approach/Methods:In addition to reviewing the relevant labor education theories, this study examines China’s labor education policies using historical documents and current policy texts.Marxist and traditional approaches to labor education,as well as the historical development of education in China, provide the macroscopic backdrop of this study’s analysis of the persistence and innovativeness of China’s labor education policies.Findings:China’s labor education policy has placed labor education on the same level as that in morality, intellect, sports, and aesthetics, thereby endowing labor education with new meaning.Labor education seeks to cultivate workers with all-round physical and mental development.Becoming more varied over time, labor education now involves the cultivation of skills, technological capacities, creative thinking, labor habits, and emotional development.Approaches and methods include formal programs and teaching, education in daily life at home and school,as well as practical activities outside of school.Originality/Value:This study identifies the meaning of labor education in different eras and analyzes the objectives, contents, and methods of China’s current policies on labor education,as well as its future developmental trends. In doing so,this study provides a useful reference for the implementation of labor education in elementary and middle schools. 展开更多
