Nucleus Pulposus(NP)Replacement is a developing surgical methodology for the treatment of pathology related to degeneration of intervertebral discs(IVDs).This article provides necessary context regarding the patholo-gies treated with this technology, the biomechanical structure and function of the IVD,and the procedures this technology aims to replace.Primarily,it provides an overview and discussion of commercial and experimental preformed and in situ curing prosthesis designs reported in the scientific literature and summarizes the results of biomechanical and clinical studies evaluating their efficacy.Contextual and updated information on the most recent research into NP replacement with novel hydrogel and tissue engineering(TE)strategies is described.Replacement of the NP allows for potential improvement in the treatment of degenerative spinal pathologies through minimally invasive surgical techniques. 展开更多

In the original published version of this article, the authors reference a case study describing a patient that experienced adverse outcomes from the implantation of the GelStix nucleus pulposus replacement de-vice.While this product is relatively new,and there is limited published information regarding this device, the case study represents the only reported instance of an adverse outcome. The authors misinterpreted the source material and failed to recognize that the adverse outcome experienced by the patient may not have been due to the device itself, but instead a result of the operating surgeon implanting the device in-correctly.The authors felt that it was necessary to correct this minor oversight in order to avoid bringing unwarranted negative attention to a product with otherwise promising results. 展开更多
