Silver carp were introduced into the pre-sedimentation pond to control excessive phytoplankton in raw water. The effectiveness of the filter-feeding silver carp on phytoplankton control and the effect of silver carp on phytoplankton community were investigated. The results showed that Microcystis could be effectively removed by silver carp stocked in the pre-sedimentation pond, and simultaneously, the concentration of single-cell phytoplankton increased obviously. The difference in phytoplankton species and single- cell phytoplankton size between in the water and in the gut of silver carp indicated that phytoplankton smaller than 5 μm, such as Chamydomonas and Platymonas, were almost not be filtered by silver carp, phytoplankton with the size between 5 and 20μm could be partly filtered, and large size phytoplankton, mainly colony-forming Microcystis could be filtered almost completely. These filter- feeding characteristics directly caused the phytoplankton size distribution biased toward miniaturization. Therefore, this biological treatment using silver carp could be applied only to deal with groups of Microcystis-dominated eutrophic water, and was not appropriate in water bodies where single-cell micro phytoplankton were dominant. Especially when silver carp are used in water treatment, a cautious attitude should be taken based on the evaluation of phytoplankton biomass and species structure features in raw water. 展开更多

Based on the fact that recycling of combined filter backwash water(CFBW)directly to drinking water treatment plants(WTP)is considered to be a feasible method to enhance pollutant removal efficiency,we were motivated to evaluate the genotoxicity of water samples from two pilot-scale drinking water treatment systems,one with recycling of combined backwash water,the other one with a conventional process.An integrated approach of the comet and micronucleus(MN)assays was used with zebrafish(Danio rerio)to investigate the water genotoxicity in this study.The total organic carbon(TOC),dissolved organic carbon(DOC),and trihalomethane formation potential(THMFP),of the recycling process were lower than that of the conventional process.All the results showed that there was no statistically significant difference(P〉0.05)between the conventional and recycling processes,and indicated that the genotoxicity of water samples from the recycling process did not accumulate in 15 day continuous recycling trial.It was worth noting that there was correlation between the concentrations of TOC,DOC,UV(254),and THMFPs in water and the DNA damage score,with corresponding R^2 values of 0.68,0.63,0.28,and 0.64.Nevertheless,both DNA strand breaks and MN frequency of all water samples after disinfection were higher than that of water samples from the two treatment units,which meant that the disinfection by-products(DBPs)formed by disinfection could increase the DNA damage.Both the comet and MN tests suggest that the recycling process did not increase the genotoxicity risk,compared to the traditional process. 展开更多

The overall purpose of this research is to examine the impact of untreated sedimentation tank sludge water( USTSW) recycle on water quality during treatment of low turbidity water in coagulation—sedimentation processes. 950 m L of raw water and different concentrations of 50 m L USTSW are injected into six 1 000 m L beakers without coagulant.The results indicate that USTSW characterized as accumulated suspended solids and organic matter has active ingredients,which possess the equivalent function of coagulant. The optimal blended water turbidity is in the range of 10-20 NTU,within which USTSW recycle achieves the highest save coagulant rate. The mechanism of strengthening coagulation effect when USTSW recycle mainly depends on the chemical effect and physical effect. What is more,through scanning electron microscopy( SEM),it is found that the floc structures with USTSW recycle are more compact than those without USTSW recycle. Besides,the water quality parameters of color,NH3-N,CODMn,UV254,total aluminum,total manganese when USTSW recycle is better than the raw water without recycle,indicating that USTSW recycle can improve water quality with strengthening coagulation effect. 展开更多

At present,a growing number of consumer products contain engineered nanoparticle TiO2(nano⁃TiO2),which has resulted in the consequences of nano⁃TiO2 entering the aquatic environment directly or indirectly at some stage.The fate of nano⁃TiO2 in the aquatic environment has become the key factor which affects its safety application and nanoecotoxicology.This paper aims to investigate how the dissolved organic matters(DOM),especially the molecular weight fractions in the aquatic environment,affect the aggregation,stability,and fate of nano⁃TiO2,and the interaction mechanism of DOM and nano⁃TiO2.Results of dynamic light scattering(DLS)showed that the molecular weight of DOM molecules caused different aggregation rates of nano⁃TiO2 in aqueous solution.Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR)results indicated the molecular structure is characteristics of DOM fractions and the mechanisms of bonds formation between DOM and nano⁃TiO2.Results of three⁃dimensional excitation⁃emission matrices(3D⁃EEM)confirmed the FTIR results and implied the increase of the stability of theπ-πconjugated system in the presence of DOM.In addition,low molecular weight of DOM fractions appeared to show more affinity with nano⁃TiO2 than high molecular weight fractions. 展开更多

Polyvinylpyrrolidone K-30(PVP) was introduced into the preparation of nanozero-valent iron(n ZVI) and the traditional liquid-phase reduction was improved. The introduction of PVP simplified the traditional method.The n ZVI prepared with this new approach showed excellent surface characters and high performance on the removal of cadmium. TEM results showed that the aggregates of n ZVI can reach to several micrometers in length but less than 100 nm in diameter. The iron particles that were enclosed by a layer of oxide film that is less than10 nm, demonstrated that the n ZVI possesses a core–shell structure. BET results indicate that the specific surface area of the n ZVI was 20.3159 m^2g^(-1). A three factor and three level orthogonal experiment was employed to find out the dominant factor that affects the removal rate of cadmium by n ZVI. Based on the range values, the prominence order of each factor was: initial p H of the solution N initial concentration of cadmium N dosage of n ZVI, the range was 96.453, 3.294 and 1.747, respectively. A simulation was performed under the same condition and a same conclusion was derived, this consistence confirmed the validity of the conclusion that p H is the most significant factor that affects the adsorption efficiency. 展开更多

Scanning Electron Microscopy( SEM) analysis reflects that influent conditions change the morphologies of biofilm. Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis( DGGE) analysis shows differences of H values are due to succession of functional bacterial communities. The urgent need for fresh water resource is a public issue facing the world.Solar distillation for seawater desalination is a promising freshwater production method.Interfacial solar evaporation systems based on 2 D photo-thermal membranes have been widely studied,but salt pollution is one of the main challenges for solar distillation.In order to solve this problem,a hydrophilic three-dimensional(3 D)porous photo-thermal fiber felt(PFF)was obtained by one-step method,through a simple polydopamine(PDA)coating method with hydrophobic graphite felt as a substrate.The PFF had a good evaporation rate of 1.48 kg m^(-2)h^(-1)and its corresponding light-vapor conversion efficiency reached 87.4%.In addition,the PFF exhibited an excellent salt-resistant ability when applied to photo-thermal evaporation of highsalinity seawater with 10 wt%NaCl,owing to its intrinsic 3 D macroporous structure for the migration circulation of salt ions.The development of the PFF offers a new route for the exploration of salt-re sistant photo-thermal materials and is promising for the practical application of solar distillation. 展开更多

A novel method was applied to co-recover proteins and humic acid from the dewatered sewage sludge for liquid fertilizer and animal feed. The proteins in sewage sludge were first extracted using the processes of ultra- sonication and acid precipitation, and then the humic acid was recovered via membrane filtration. The extraction efficiency was 125.9mg humic acid-gWSS volatile suspended solids (VSS) and 123.9 mg proteins-g-1 VSS at the optimal ultrasonic density of 1.5 W·mL-1. FT-IR spectrum results indicated that the recovered proteins and humic acid showed similar chemical characteristic to the natural proteins and humic acid. The acidic solution (pH 2) could be recycled and used more than 10 times during the co-recovery processes. In addition, the dewatered sludge could be easily biodegraded when the humic acid and proteins are extracted, which was essential for further utilization. These findings are of great significance for recovering valuable nutrient fi'om sewage sludge. 展开更多
