However, they are rarely applied to roadways with extremely thick coal seams because the control mechanism of the system for the deformation of the roof and the separation between coal rock segments is not completely understood. By using the relationship between the support system and the roof strata, a mechanical model was established to calculate the deformation of the roof in a thick coal seam with bedding separation under different support conditions: with an anchor truss support and without support. On this basis, the research was used to deduce a method for computing the minimum pre-tightening forces in the anchor truss, the maximum amounts of subsidence and separation with, and without, anchor truss support under the roof, and the maximum subsidence and the decreasing amounts of the separation before and after adopting the anchor truss. Additionally, mechanical relationships between the minimum pre-tightening force and the anchoring force in the anchor were analyzed. By taking a typical roadway with thick coal roof as an example, the theoretical results mentioned above were applied in the analysis and testing of a roof supporting project in a roadway field to verify the accuracy of the theory: favorable experimental results were achieved. In addition, the relationships among other parameters were analyzed, including the minimum pre-tightening forces applied by the anchor truss, the angle of inclination of the anchor cable, and the array pitch. Meanwhile, the changing characteristics of the amounts of roof separation and subsidence with key parameters of the support system(such as array pitch, pre-tightening force, and inclination angle) were also analyzed. The research results revealed the acting mechanism of the anchor truss in control of roadway stability with a thick coal seam, providing a theoretical basis of its application in coal mining.展开更多

Thermal shocking effect occurs when the coalbed methane(CBM)reservoirs meet liquid nitrogen(LN2)of extremely low temperature.In this study,3D via X-ray microcomputer tomography(μCT)and scanning electron microscope(SE...Thermal shocking effect occurs when the coalbed methane(CBM)reservoirs meet liquid nitrogen(LN2)of extremely low temperature.In this study,3D via X-ray microcomputer tomography(μCT)and scanning electron microscope(SEM)are employed to visualize and quantify morphological evolution characteristics of fractures in coal after LN2 thermal shocking treatments.LN2 thermal shocking leads to a denser fracture network than its original state with coal porosity growth rate increasing up to 183.3%.The surface porosity of theμCT scanned layers inside the coal specimen is influenced by LN2 thermal shocking which rises from 18.76%to 215.11%,illustrating the deformation heterogeneity of coal after LN2 thermal shocking.The cracking effect of LN2 thermal shocking on the surface of low porosity is generally more effective than that of high surface porosity,indicating the applicability of LN2 thermal shocking on low-permeability CBM reservoir stimulation.The characteristics of SEM scanned coal matrix in the coal powder and the coal block after the LN2 thermal shocking presented a large amount of deep and shallow progressive scratch layers,fracture variation diversity(i.e.extension,propagation,connectivity,irregularity)on the surface of the coal block and these were the main reasons leading to the decrease of the uniaxial compressive strength of the coal specimen.展开更多

Since 1968, the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) program has aimed...Many language instructors in colleges and universities around the world have teaching assistants to help them with the teaching. Since 1968, the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) program has aimed to strengthen foreign language instruction at U.S. educational institutions by establishing a native speaker presence. As one of the first group of Fulbright Chinese Language Assistants, the author worked at the College of Wooster in the United States from August, 2005 to May, 2006. At the beginning of the paper, the author gave a brief introduction of Fulbright FLTA program. Then the author described five cultural activities that Fulbright FLTAs could employ in foreign language learners' learning process: giving presentations, teaching songs, watching movies, organizing free tea or coffee breaks, and holding free talks. The following section discussed two phenomena that FLTAs should avoid, that is, ethnocentrism and cultural stereotyping. The author pointed out in the conclusion that Fulbright language assistants should make efforts to be qualified cultural ambassadors.展开更多

Interviews and classroom o...This paper explores three College English teachers' perceived difficulties in teaching content-based courses in the Chinese context and opportunities for their change in the knowledge base. Interviews and classroom observation were used to collect data. After coding and recoding of the audio data, the researcher found that College English teachers face the following difficulties: positioning of themselves, commitment to the course, students' expectation, the balance between language and content, and administrative support. Meanwhile, the experience of teaching content-based courses offered them an opportunity to increase their knowledge of the content, the learners, and educational values. Some implications for CBI (content-based instruction) in curriculum reform were put forward at the end of the paper.展开更多
