The sluggish kinetics of the electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)in intermediatetemperature solid oxide fuel cells(IT-SOFCs)greatly limits the overall cell performance. In this study,an efficient and durable cathode material for IT-SOFCs is designed based on density functional theory(DFT)calculations by co-doping with Nb and Ta the B-site of the SrFeO_(3-δ)perovskite oxide. The DFT calculations suggest that Nb/Ta co-doping can regulate the energy band of the parent SrFeO_(3-δ)and help electron transfer. In symmetrical cells, such cathode with a SrFe_(0.8)Nb_(0.1)Ta_(0.1)O_(3-δ)(SFNT)detailed formula achieves a low cathode polarization resistance of 0.147Ωcm^(2) at 650℃.Electron spin resonance(ESR)and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)analysis confirm that the co-doping of Nb/Ta in SrFeO_(3-δ)B-site increases the balanced concentration of oxygen vacancies, enhancing the electrochemical performance when compared to 20 mol%Nb single-doped perovskite oxide. The cathode button cell with NiSDC|SDC|SFNT configuration achieves an outstanding peak power density of 1.3 W cm^(-2)at 650℃.Moreover,the button cell shows durability for 110 h under 0.65 V at 600℃ using wet H_(2) as fuel. 展开更多

A nonmetal doping strategy was exploited for the conventional La_(0.5)Sr_(0.5)FeO_(3-δ)(LSF)cathode,allowing high performance for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells(H-SOFCs).Unlike previous studies focusing on the utilization of metal oxides as dopants, phosphorus, which is a nonmetal element, was used as the cation dopant for LSF by partially replacing Fe ions to form the new La_(0.5)Sr_(0.5)Fe_(0.9)P_(0.1)O_(3-δ)(LSFP)compound.The H-SOFC using the LSFP cathode showed a two-fold peak power density as compared to that using the LSF cathode. Both experimental studies and first-principle calculations were used to unveil the mechanisms for the high performance of the LSFP cells. 展开更多

Proton-conducting oxides offer a promising electrolyte solution for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells(SOFCs) due to their high conductivity and low activation energy. However, the lower operation temperature leads to a reduced cathode activity and thus a poorer fuel cell performance. La_(0.8)Sr_(0.2)MnO_(3-δ)(LSM) is the classical cathode material for high-temperature SOFCs, which lack features as a proper SOFC cathode material at intermediate temperatures.Despite this, we here successfully couple nanostructured LSM cathode with proton-conducting electrolytes to operate below600℃ with desirable SOFC performance. Inkjet printing allows depositing nanostructured particles of LSM on Y-doped Ba ZrO_3(BZY) backbones as cathodes for proton-conducting SOFCs, which provides one of the highest power output for the BZY-based fuel cells below 600 ℃. This somehow changes the common knowledge that LSM can be applied as a SOFC cathode materials only at high temperatures(above 700 ℃). 展开更多
