Our aim is to design a roof for hot c... This paper demonstrates the application of a design tool called BioTRIZ. Its developers claim that it can be used to access biological strategies for solving engineering problems. Our aim is to design a roof for hot climates that gets free cooling through radiant coupling with the sky. The insulation in a standard roof stops the sun and convection from warming the thermal mass. But it also restricts the mass's longwave view of the cool sky. Different solutions to this conflict are offered by BioTRIZ. The chosen solution is to replace the standard insulation component with an open cell honeycomb. The vertical cells would allow longwave radiation to pass, while arresting convection. The solutions offered by BioTRIZ's technological counterpart include no such changes in structure. It is estimated that the thermal mass in the biomimetic roof would remain on average 4.5℃ cooler than in a standard roof over a year in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. 展开更多

Flexible strip supercapacitors are developed and their electrochemical properties are characterized. Activated carbon is used as the electrode material and it is found to have a good porous structure which provides a large surface area for energy storage.Furthermore, this activated carbon performs well. The manufacturing processes for the supercapacitors are described in detail and the preparation process has good reproducibility. The strip supercapacitors are combined in series and parallel to measure their electrical properties. The performances of these two samples in series or in parallel both follow the theoretical models. The electrochemical potential window of a series circuit of these two strip supercapacitors is 4.8 V. The energy and power of the series or parallel circuits are equal to the sums of the two strip supercapacitors. 展开更多

Trombe walls with nanoporous aerogel insulation applied to UK housing refurbishments

There is an opportunity to improve the efficiency of passive Trombe walls and active solar air collectors by replacing their conventional glass covers with lightweight polycarbonate panels filled with nanoporous aerogel insulation.This study investigates the thermal performance,energy savings,and financial payback period of passive Aerogel Trombe walls applied to the existing UK housing stock.Using parametric modeling,a series of design guidance tables have been generated,providing estimates of the energy savings and overheating risk associated with applying areas of Trombe wall to four different house types across the UK built to six notional construction standards.Calculated energy savings range from 183 kWh/m2/year for an 8 m2 system retrofitted to a solid walled detached house to 62 kWh/m2/year for a 32 m2 system retrofitted to a super insulated flat.Predicted energy savings from Trombe walls up to 24 m2 are found to exceed the energy savings from external insulation across all house types and constructions.Small areas of Trombe wall can provide a useful energy contribution without creating a significant overheating risk.If larger areas are to be installed,then detailed calculations would be recommended to assess and mitigate potential overheating issues. 展开更多

目的确定临床医生对入住重症监护病房(ICU)的COPD急性加重期患者预后的预测与实际结果是否一致。设计前瞻性队列研究。地点英国92个ICU及3个呼吸机依赖病房。参与者832例COPD或哮喘急性加重或COPD合并哮喘患者,表现气促、呼吸衰竭或... 目的确定临床医生对入住重症监护病房(ICU)的COPD急性加重期患者预后的预测与实际结果是否一致。设计前瞻性队列研究。地点英国92个ICU及3个呼吸机依赖病房。参与者832例COPD或哮喘急性加重或COPD合并哮喘患者,表现气促、呼吸衰竭或精神状态改变,年龄在45岁及以上。结局评估指标由临床医生预测的结果以及实际观察的180天存活率。结果517例患者(62%)存活到180天。临床医生预测的180天存活率却是悲观的,平均只有49%。依照临床医生的预测,1/5预后最差的存活率仅为10%,而实际存活率却是40%。来自于覆盖英国74%的ICU数据库的信息提示,参与研究和未参与研究的ICU并没有实质性差别。在同一个ICU中入选患者与未入选患者的病情相似。结论因为决定COPD或哮喘患者是否需要气管插管,入住ICU取决于临床医生对其预后的预测.因此,一些本也许会生存下来的患者却由于那些没有根据的对其预后的悲观预测,而很可能被拒绝收入ICU。 展开更多
