Antioxidant-the word itself is magic.Using the antioxidant concept as a spearhead in proposed mechanisms for staving off so-called"free-radical"reactions,the rush is on to mine claims for the latest and most...Antioxidant-the word itself is magic.Using the antioxidant concept as a spearhead in proposed mechanisms for staving off so-called"free-radical"reactions,the rush is on to mine claims for the latest and most effective combination of free-radical scavenging compounds.We must acknowledge that such"radicals"have definitively been shown to damage all biochemical components such as DNA/HNA,carbohydrates,unsaturated lipids,proteins,and micronutrients such as carotenoids(alpha and beta carotene,lycopene),vitamins A,B_6,B_(12),and folate.Defense strategies against such aggressive radical species include enzymes,antioxidants that occur naturally in the body(glutathione,uric acid,ubiquinol-10,and others)and radical scavenging nutrients,such as vitamins A,C,and E,and carotenoids.This paper will present a brief discussion of some well-and little-known herbs that may add to the optimization of antioxidant status and therefore offer added preventive values for overall health.It is important to state at the outset that antioxidants vary widely in their free-radical quenching effects and each may be individually attracted to specific cell sites.Further evidence of the specialized nature of the carotenoids is demonstrated by the appearance of two carotenoids in the macula region of the retina where beta-carotene is totally展开更多
Objective:To evaluate the antihyperglycemic activity of leaves of Hyptis suaveolens using streptozotocin model.Mothods:Hyptis suaveolens extract(HSE) 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight was administered orally to streptozot...Objective:To evaluate the antihyperglycemic activity of leaves of Hyptis suaveolens using streptozotocin model.Mothods:Hyptis suaveolens extract(HSE) 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight was administered orally to streptozotocin induced diabetes,once daily for 21 days.Results:A significant reduction in blood glucose was observed in diabetic animals treated with HSE at different doses when compared with diabetic rats.Levels of triglyceride,total cholesterol,low density lipoprolein.very low density lipoprotein were decreased while administering HSE at different doses,compared with their control values in diabetic animals.Conclusions:Our results show that HSE possesses significant antihyperglycemic activity which might be attributed to stimulating effects on glucose utilization and antioxidant enzyme.展开更多

Therefore, the present study was undertaken to investigate the hepatoprotective activity of extracts of Feronia limonia fruit on albino rat liver, damage induced by single dose of carbon-tetrachloride (1.5 ml/kg, p.o.). The oral administration of extracts (500 mg/kg, p.o.) for 7 days has shown significant hepatoprotective action. There is reduction in the elevated levels of serum enzymes such SGOT, SGPT, ALP and Serum bilirubin and elevation in level of GSH, GPX,GLY and total protein in Feronia limonia protected rats.展开更多
Polysaccharide-derived carbon quantum dots(CQDs)have emerged as promising nanomaterials,valued for their biocompatibility,low toxicity,and outstanding fluorescence characteristics,which make them ideal for diverse bio...Polysaccharide-derived carbon quantum dots(CQDs)have emerged as promising nanomaterials,valued for their biocompatibility,low toxicity,and outstanding fluorescence characteristics,which make them ideal for diverse biomedical applications,particularly in theranostics.These carbon-based nanoparticles uniquely merge diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities,holding significant potential for both detecting and treating various diseases.Renewable and abundant polysaccharides—such as chitosan,starch,cellulose,pectin,alginate,dextran,and heparin—are excellent carbon precursors for CQD synthesis.Their inherent functional groups,like hydroxyl and carboxyl,enhance the stability,solubility,and adaptability of the resulting CQDs,broadening their application in imaging,drug delivery,and cancer treatment.Additionally,these CQDs have demonstrated potential in targeted drug delivery,controlled release systems,and tissue regeneration,solidifying their role in both diagnostic and therapeutic realms.This review examines recent progress in the synthesis of polysaccharide-derived CQDs,emphasizing preclinical studies that showcase their use in imaging,drug delivery,and cancer therapy.It further explores their prospective role in theranostic applications and outlines the challenges that must be overcome to transition these nanomaterials into clinical trials.With continued research and innovation,polysaccharidederived CQDs are poised to contribute significantly to future clinical applications,facilitating more effective and personalized treatment strategies across a spectrum of diseases.展开更多
Traditional system of medicine consists of large number of plants with various medicinal and pharmacological importances and hence represents a priceless tank of new bioactive molecules.Coccinia indica belongs to the ...Traditional system of medicine consists of large number of plants with various medicinal and pharmacological importances and hence represents a priceless tank of new bioactive molecules.Coccinia indica belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae.It is a rapidly growing,perennial climber or trailing vine.Traditionally different parts of this plant namely the roots,leaves and fruits are used in folklore medicine for several purposes like jaundice,diabetes,wound healing,ulcers,stomach ache,skin disease,fever,asthma,cough.The leaf and its constituents have been reported to possess hypoglycaemic,hypolipidemic and antioxidant properties.This review provides adequate information to develop suitable therapeutics out of these plant parts.展开更多
