A new experimental method is developed to investigate the effect of dissolved substances on the evaporation rate of small water droplets suspended in the atmosphere.The laboratory setup is based on converting a genera...A new experimental method is developed to investigate the effect of dissolved substances on the evaporation rate of small water droplets suspended in the atmosphere.The laboratory setup is based on converting a generated droplet jet of complex structure into a directed flow of evaporating droplets falling in a vertical tube.Images of falling droplets captured by a high-speed camera through a window in the vertical channel wall are used to determine the sizes and velocities of individual droplets.The computational modeling of droplet motion and evaporation proved useful at all stages of the experimental work:from selecting the position of the vertical channel to processing the experimental data.It was found that even a 0.1%mass concentration of the dissolved ionic salt KCl has a considerable effect on decreasing the evaporation rate of the droplets.In contrast,a typical fungicide with a mass concentration of 2.5%has only a slight impact on the evaporation rate.The laboratory results enabled the authors to refine the evaporation model of water droplets to account for the presence of dissolved substances.Modified models of this type are expected to be useful in controling crop spraying and also in other potential applications.展开更多
New experimental results,which are important for the potential use of small levitating droplets as biochemical microreactors,are reported.It is shown that the combination of infrared heating and reduced evaporation of...New experimental results,which are important for the potential use of small levitating droplets as biochemical microreactors,are reported.It is shown that the combination of infrared heating and reduced evaporation of saline water under the droplet cluster is sufficient to produce equilibriumsaltwater droplets over a wide temperature range.The resulting universal dependence of droplet size on temperature simplifies the choice of optimal conditions for generating stable droplet clusters with droplets of the desired size.A physical analysis of the experimental results on the equilibrium size of saltwater droplets makes it possible to separate the effects related to the salinity of the water layer under the droplet cluster from the effects related to the reduction of water evaporation from the water droplets.This is expected to be important for further studies of heat transfer and diffusion in layers of evaporating solutions and condensed droplets.展开更多
Droplet clusters levitating over the locally heated water surface are considered a very promising phe-nomenon of microfluidics for the potential use of the droplets as unique microreactors for microbio-logical experim...Droplet clusters levitating over the locally heated water surface are considered a very promising phe-nomenon of microfluidics for the potential use of the droplets as unique microreactors for microbio-logical experiments.A new optical method is suggested for precise measurements of the sub-micron levitation height of single droplets.The method is based on the analysis of variable colors of the inter-ference halo around the droplet.For the first time,it is possible to measure the extremely low downward velocity of droplets,which grow due to steam condensation.This velocity was found to be 5-8 nm/s.The height of the levitation of various droplets just before their coalescence with a layer of water was also determined.Such measurements might be used for the verification of sophisticated models for the droplet levitation to be developed for a very thin layer of humid air under the droplet when the Knudsen effect should be taken into account.展开更多
