The period spanning the 10th to 13th centuries witnessed the coexistence of multiple Chinese regimes, including the Liao,Song,Western Xia,Jin,and Tibetan Empire. As a distinctive commodity circulating across these political entities, tea emerged as a critical medium for examining the interactions, exchanges, and cultural integration of the Chinese nation during this era.Taking the tea-related interactions during the Great Song dynasty(encompassing the coexistence of these regimes)as an entry point, this study systematically examined extant texts and excavated artefacts to explore the construction of tea trade networks, the mutual influence of tea-drinking customs, and the sense of community fostered through tea-related interactions during this period. As a cultural symbol embodying both material and spiritual dimensions, tea catalyzed the formation of a"tea cultural circle"spanning the 10th to 13th centuries that transcended political boundaries. This circle made significant contributions to the consolidation of the Chinese national community within the unified political frameworks of the Yuan,Ming, and Qing dynasties.By examining tea-related interactions during this period, this research not only deepens our understanding of the exchanges, interactions, and integration of the Chinese nation from the 10th to 13th centuries, while also offering a new perspective on the pluralistic yet unified structure of Chinese nation.
