Coal tar pitch was oxidized with a mixture of concentrated sulfuric acid and nitric acid at 30?℃ and converted into aqua mesophase pitch in a high yield, which was dissolved in aqueous solution of ammonia hydroxide and carbonaceous hydrogel was formed. The carbonaceous hydrogel was directly exchanged with ethanol to remove water, dried supercritically, thermally treated, and thus resulted in carbonaceous nano powder, which consisted of amorphous carbon nanoparticles and well distributed with an average size of about 10?nm. The characteristics and the formation process were also analyzed by TEM, FT IR, TG, XRD and physical adsorption techniques.
