OBJECTIVE To explore the value of electroencephalogram(EEG)in early diagnosis of brain injury in neonates with asphyxia. METHODS EEG examination was performed in 40 neonates with asphyxia within 12 hrs of births. RESULTS 32(80.0%)cases out of the 40 patients with the HIE showed abnormal EEG. The rate of the clinical HIE with EEG abnormalities was 88.9%(32/36). The degree of EEG abnormality in neonates with HIE was cosistent with the clinical grading of HIE. EEG manifestation is related closely with HIE, Moderate-severe EEG has very poor prognosis. CONCLUSIONS EEG monitoring can be objectively, directly reflect the functional status of the brain and has special value on the extent of damage on the early detection of brain dysfunction asphyxia.
